Leaving Brown and Djune off the list was stupid. I would take both before anyone listed. All three Dawg linebackers were the very best in all of 4A. Anybody that saw them play knows that. We may never see another trio of linebackers like that again.

Just my opinion.

Congrats to all players who made the team.

I certainly agree on Brown.  His stats were almost identical to Gates.  Can’t see how he does not at least make the Honorable Mention list.  Remember DeJulian missed several playoff games with a high ankle sprain and that probably hurt him a little.  Regardless, all three got a ring.

I am both a voter and nominations distributor for the various TSWA All-State Teams. I spend countless hours getting nominations from coaches in East and Central Texas for my own team, All-Smoaky.com, but also for the TSWA team.

And, it's a thankless job. Think about it for a second, there will be FIVE (5) All-State teams released this week and hundreds of nominations, dozens of those honored and almost 100% of the comments will be someone complaining about who didn't make the team, rather than who did. And, so I've always had a rule with my talk show...don't just tell me who should've made the team, tell me who should be taken off the team too. No doubt Carthage, among other programs had players who should've made the team...but when you're asked also take someone off the team and you have the stats in front of you (not just name and school), it does make it a little more difficult.

While you can disagree with the process, using "stupid" without knowing the rules is, well, not educated.

There's usually a maximum of six (6) nominations per program with very few exceptions. Carthage had more than six All-State players, so did Pleasant Grove or Mart or Newton among others.

I wasn't involved in the rule about the maximum amount of nominations, but it's not used to keep players from being honored, but rather keeping programs from sending in mass nominations that probably don't have the criteria.

And, if you paid any attention to my 2017 All-Smoaky.com Team, Carthage was well represented, including Gates and Brown among many others, but I don't believe you made one comment about their inclusion, did you?

Thank you.

Smoaky's reply sheds some light on this situation.  It seems to me having a cap on the number of players nominated from one school can in rare cases result in some injustices.

Two LBs from Henderson and 2 from Kilgore made the Honorable Mention list, and I have no reason to argue that they didn't deserve it.  But if they did, Brown certainly did also IMHO.

Understanding a little more of the “why” and “how” these players were selected helps a novice like me.  In the case of 2017 teams like Newton, PG, Carthage, etc who were dominant the entire season it does create a situation by which some well deserving players get left off the list.  I guess that’s why there are more than one All State team.  🙂

Thank you for the clarification on how the "thankless" job process works, Smoakey, & know that we Carthage fans appreciate our players inclusion into any awards ceremony! Admittedly, we think our Dawgs are #1 & it makes us proud both, proud of & for them when they receive recognizion for their hard work.

Being born & raised in Carthage & seeing the success of the program  since the arrival of Surratt, Preston & Co., the entire community has been filled with pride for our Dawgs, & we pack the home side stands every Friday night, as well as making a respectable showing of support at away games. We have come to expect great things from our boys , & they have produced amazingly! Please forgive us if we get a little offended if everybody doesn't feel the same!😜👌

Point well made David Smoak,

I appreciate the job you and many others do to make this site the best in Texas.

My point was a homer comment, All players on the list deserve to be their, but Brown missing does not make sense.

This was by far the best trio of linebackers I have ever seen on one team that I doubt we will ever see again. If you have one outstanding linebacker, your team is blessed. If you have two, your team just won three or four games you may not would have won.

When you have three as good as these three, you end with the best defense in your classification.

I agree with all the players that made the list, I just think at least Brown could have been at the very minimum honorable mention.

Sorry if I offended you, just chalk it up to a Dawg homer.

Thank you for all you do.

God Bless coaches, players, and fans.

Branson Bragg of Crandall should be on the list for o-line, 1st team in my opinion but not having him on any list is a huge snub. He should be in over any one of the honorable mentioners at the very least, 20 FBS offers doesn't lie. He allowed 0 sacks all season and had 40+ pancakes in 12 games

Yet again, another response without information.

Branson Bragg wasn't nominated or if he was it didn't reach the TSWA distribution center and nomination center.

Sometimes we make comments or give an opinion without knowing why, so now you know the "snub" wasn't from those who voted.
