Let it be known that I said Alto's sophomore running back is a hoss.

He is really good, but fumbles a lot. He will get that fixed, and with Thacker back we will be better. He will be a force for a while,  we are basically all young, all juniors on the line.

Last night my ole coach's words rang true  ..."You are 14 points behind when you get off the bus in Alto, boys" .... tru storie ...

He said that because we were good, not because of the refs. We all know the refs were bad for both teams, get over it.

22 was the guy who killed us last night. Special player. We were one man getting a hat on him away from breaking several times. He was very good at reading and coming up from the safety spot to play the run. All we needed was someone to get in his way at least a few times. We just couldn’t make that happen. Would love to see these two teams at their best with good footing. Hopefully we meet again. Good luck going forward Garrison.

The field is definitely going to need some TLC after this one. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for turf someday! Coaches have done an outstanding job with the grass we have. It looked amazing to start the game.

Yes, 22 is special.  When we need a play on either side of the ball we look to him.  Alto is going to make some noise this year.

Bulldogs knock Alto from unbeaten ranks, 35-21BY JOHN KRUEGER [email protected] The Daily Sentinel | 0 comments

ALTO — When Alto sophomore running back Vi'Dareous High busted through a hole in the Garrison defense and sprinted 72 yards for a touchdown on the second play of Friday night's soggy grudge match here at Cam'Ron Matthews Field Friday night, not one fan in attendance probably thought the game was over.

Why? Probably because these two teams had scored a combined 169 points in their last two meetings. And despite intermittent rain, the popcorn was flowing, with plenty of action to come.

The teams traded momentum throughout the first half, but in the end it was the Garrison ground game and the Alto turnovers that were the difference, as the Bulldogs' Sabastion Porter and Jakedric Watts combined to rush for 349 of Garrison's 395 yards on the ground as the Bulldogs pulled away for a 35-21 win.

The loss knocked Alto, who was receiving votes this week for the Associated Press Top 10 High School rankings, from the the unbeaten teams in the state, falling to 3-1. Garrison, which knocked off then-No. 8-ranked San Augustine last week, 48-39, improved to 2-1 on the year.

Both teams took advantage of very wet field conditions. Rain had fallen on and off for the past two weeks and came down heavy before the contest. It also drizzled on and off throughout the game. Despite that the poor conditions, Garrison outgained Alto 395-218 on the ground and 421-295 in total offense.

The Bulldogs also forced the Yellowjackets into five turnovers and a blocked punt, scoring 20 points off those miscues. Alto scored seven points off two Garrison turnovers.

"The bad field conditions probably equalized the game a lot between the two teams," said Garrison head coach Larry Prince after the contest. "I talked to the guys before the game and told them that ball security was going to be the key to this game and it was. We forced a few turnovers and had a couple ourselves. But we ended up on the plus side of that and it was the difference in the game.

Sabastion Porter dominated the ground attack for the third straight game. He was a workhorse, rolling up a game-high 217 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. He now has 528 yards and nine touchdowns in just three games. He had a great supporting cast from junior Jakedric Watts, who added 132 yards and a score on 17 carries. Watts has now compiled 299 yards and three scores on the season. Jakedric's twin brother, Jakadric, scored a TD and added 52 yards on only three runs.

"The momentum swung so many times in this game it was unbelievable," said Prince. "Something good would happen to them and they'd take it and run with it, and we'd have to battle back to try to at least get the momentum stopped.

"They're a great football team. Their running back (Vi-Dareous High) makes you catch your breath every time he touches the football because he can take it to the house in a hurry."

High led the Yellowjackets on the ground with 199 yards and a touchdown on 19 runs.

Garrison was also able to keep pressure on Yellowjacket quarterback Harmon West, picking him off once when sophomore Dallas Porter registered his second interception in as many weeks. This one was deep in Garrison territory early in the game. Landon Lunsford came out of nowhere all night, recovering all four Alto fumbles. And Bulldog defensive lineman Wyatt Reneau not only gave West fits, but he blocked an Alto punt, which turned into the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter when GHS outscored the 'Jackets 14-0.

"I thought in the fourth quarter our offensive line kind of took over and controlled the line of scrimmage," Prince added. "Field conditions were really bad and we were able to grind the clock out late."

After High scored on the second play and AHS added the two-point conversion, the teams traded punts and turnovers until the second quarter. Alto fumbled on its own 25-yard line and Lunsford pounced on the ball. Four plays later Sabastion Porter scored from eight yards out and Andy Marquez pulled GHS to within 8-7 with 8:54 left in the half.

After a Yellowjacket three-and-out, Jakedric Watts took the handoff from Drew Wise on a quick-hitting play up the middle and scored on a 71-yard run. The point after gave Garrison its first lead, 14-8, with 5:47 on the clock.

Garrison's kickoff was short and splashed in the mud and Lunsford was there to recover the muffed ball on the Alto 43. Jakadric Watts scored Garrison's second touchdown in just 14 seconds when he went off left tackle and hit paydirt on the next play. Suddenly, with 5:33 on the clock, Garrison led 21-8.

Later, after a short Bulldog punt, Alto took over on the Garrison 38, with the help of a facemask penalty. High rambled 36 yards to the two-yard line on the first play and West fumbled the snap on first-and-goal, but picked up the ball and got into the endzone. The try for two failed, leaving Alto behind 21-14 at the half.

Garrison turned the ball over just 32 seconds into the second half and the 'Jackets scored three plays later when West found Jay Pope behind the Bulldog defense for a 48-yard score. The point after by Dalton Mabry tied the score, 21-21, at the 10:02 mark of the third.

Later in the period, Alto drove to the Garrison five-yard line, but the Bulldogs held on downs and took over.

Early in the fourth, Alto was punting near midfield and Reneau broke through and blocked the kick. Sabastion Porter scored from 30 yards out, running up the middle two plays later. The extra point was missed, but Garrison led 27-21 with 11:17 remaining.

Garrison put the icing on the cake after stopping Alto on downs at the Bulldog 33. GHS drove 67 yards in eight plays, as Sabastion Porter scored his third touchdown on a 15-yard run around left end. He dove over the pilon with 4:11 remaining and splashed in the mud when he landed out of bounds.

The Bulldogs will return home next Friday to open District 11-2A DI play, as they take on unbeaten Joaquin at 7:30 p.m. The Rams defeated Corrigan-Camden 21-0 Friday and are not only unbeaten (4-0) but have outscored their opponents 144-0 this season.

Good, hard-fought slugfest!! Sad to see my Jackets lose but they fought hard, never gave up and will bounce back. Garrison is a great team, as I knew they would be. And as I said at the beginning of this thread, I knew it would be a battle, as it always is when these two get together. One thing that sticks out to me and that has already been mentioned at length is the Alto turnovers. You can’t turn the ball over that many times vs. a quality opponent and win. Oh, sometimes you manage to get lucky and do, but not on this mud bowl night. Also, when you are on the three yard line and have the momentum, you gotta punch it in. Hats off to Garrison’s defense and their goal line stance. I think if we score that TD, we win.

One thing that I am excited about this year as opposed to the last few times we played Garrison, is that there is the hope of a rematch since we are back in the same division!

Now onto the next set of Bulldogs!
