GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW
And finally, the streak is over. It has been 12 long years since Longview walked out of Lobo Stadium with a victory against John Tyler, but the Lobos on Friday night cruised to a 41-13 victory to end John Tyler’s 3-game winning streak over the Lobos at their home stadium, and end John Tyler’s 5-game overall winning streak inside Lobo Stadium. With the win, Longview improved 3-0 on the season. That marks the first time since 2004/2005 that Longview has had back to back 3-0 starts to a season, following Longview’s 3-0 start to the 2017 season. It’s just the fifth time in 15 seasons under head coach John King that Longview has started 3-0. The other time being in 2009. The win also marked Longview’s 50th overall win against John Tyler. It’s the 2nd program that Longview has at least 50 victories against, the other being Marshall with 61 victories now. Now the Lobos turn their attention to a state that after constantly filled Longview’s non-district schedule for the better part of a decade and a half, has only been on Longview’s schedule once this decade. Longview heads to Louisiana for the first time since 2015, and travels to Ruston for the first time in 16 seasons. The Lobos and Bearcats haven’t met in 16 seasons, but they’re definitely no strangers to each other. Longview’s old offensive coordinator from the beginning of John King’s era calls on the Lobos this week as second year head coach, Jerrod Baugh, takes helm against his former head coach. It’ll be the first time for John King to face a former assistant coach as a head coach. Longview and Ruston have met 10 times previously, with the Lobos winning the last two in 2001 and 2002. The Lobos opened the series in 1992, with a 23-12 victory at Ruston. Ruston then won the next two meetings, in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, the #10 Bearcats were able to make a goal line stand against Longview to win 14-9. In 1994, the #1 ranked Bearcats took advantage of a missed extra point to win 14-13. The Lobos then won the next three. Ruston’s only win by more than a touchdown came in 1999 when they hung 51 points on the helpless Lobos. It was the first time in 47 years that Longview had given up 50 points or more. Excluding that 51-18 victory, the other three Ruston victories have come by a total of 12 points. The visit to Ruston will mark just the 2nd time since 2010 that Longview ventures to Louisiana for a non-district game, and 3rd time overall since 2010 (playoff game in Shreveport in 2010). The Lobos are looking to improve to 4-0 for the first time since finishing 10-0 in 2005.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: September 21st
In 1927, Leonard Ray ran into the end zone from two yards out late in the 4th quarter as Longview knocked off Marshall, 6-0. The win over the Mavs was only the 2nd in 18 meetings against Marshall for Longview.
In 1931, Marshall shutout Longview, 14-0, at Fair Park in Marshall.
In 1935, Jim Whitten’s 1 yard pass reception in the first quarter was all it took as Longview knocked off El Dorado from Arkansas, 7-0, at Fair Park.
In 1945, Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson handed Longview a 19-13 loss at Lobo Stadium.
In 1951, Lufkin’s RV Holleman run in from 6 yards out to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. But a missed extra point would cost Lufkin after Claude Pliler would haul in a 10 yard pass reception to tie the game. The following PAT was good and Longview upset Lufkin, 7-6, Lufkin.
In 1956, Longview and Denison battled back and forth all night in a game that saw 12 touchdowns between the two teams. Pete Burks tallied 4 for the Lobos, and behind 30 first downs and 477 rushing yards, the Lobos knocked off the Yellowjackets, 47-33 at Lobo Stadium.
In 1962, Henderson knocked off Longview, 22-18, at Lobo Stadium.
In 1973, Mike Mock would kick a field goal and run in from 1 yard out, while Bobby Hunter and Steve Gaddis also tallied for Longview, in a 24-0 victory over Dallas Hillcrest for the Lobos.
In 1979, Clifford Ward would rush in from two yards out in the first quarter before the Kangaroos of #9 ranked Killeen would tally on a 4-yard rush from George Leaito to tie the game as Longview and Killeen tied at Lobo Stadium, 7-7.
In 1984, Clifford Powell, Leon Hendrix and Joe Johnson would all register scores for the Lobos as Longview would dominated the Eagles in Abilene, 21-0.
In 1990, Bobby Taylor’s 75 yard pass reception in the first quarter was just the beginning for the Lobos as Longview would go on to route Carrollton Newman Smith, 49-12. The Lobos would hold the Trojans to just 135 yards on the night while tallying for 399 for themselves.
In 2001, Tate Casey would pass in a 23 yard pass reception in the first quarter and Willie Andrews would rush in for two touchdowns as Longview rolled over Ruston, 35-7, at Lobo Stadium. Longview would rush for 305 yards and add an additional 116 yards passing in the rout.
In 2012, Longview and Lufkin would each score two touchdowns to be tied 14-14 after 1 quarter before the Lobos took over. Longview would score three touchdowns in the 2nd quarter and roll up 446 yards overall on the night in a 45-14 beatdown of the Panthers at Abe Martin Stadium. The win would end Longview’s 15 year run without a win in Lufkin.

Is also played under federation rules.

Which is why I think this will be closer than it should be. You know how those Louisiana rules are.

I'll say Longview by 10 but, should be by at least 3 TD's.

Secondary tightens up.

I doubt you see the secondary tested much this game. More of a front 7 test.

Baugh learned alot under King when he was at Longview, so the offensive styles are similar. King is a bit more pass happy and diverse than Baugh though.

Ruston's only loss, for those that don't know, came in a battle of ranked teams last week when they were leading 21-20. A Hail Mary on the final play of the game gave them the loss. They should definitely be 3-0 right now.

I'll have to think on how much I think Longview is going to win by. But I do think it might take a quarter for us to get adjusted to the federation rules. Moving on defense is going to hurt us big time if we continue to do what we did this week.

But Longview is a much better team than this Ruston squad IMO. We should win walking away, at least in the 2nd half.

Wouldn't be shocked if this is a pretty quick game tbh. They're a solid running team that will look to shorten the game for sure.

That 2002 game against them was one of the shortest games I've ever seen in my life.

What rules are different?

I know the biggest one is that if the defensive line moves, it's an automatic penalty. Much like a false start. You don't get the option to get back before the snap etc. I'm sure there are more.

Not sure if their touchback is still set at the 20 or if it's at the 25 as well.

But that's the biggest difference I know.

Louisiana needs to do away with those BS federation rules, especially since their student athletes are being recruited by SOME of the best college football programs around the country who play under the NCAA guidelines. One would think that you'd prepare your athletes to transition into a system of normalcy.

Ruston is a lot better than they have been recently. They blew out Neville. They have a chance to beat West Monroe this yr and probably go deep in playoffs. But, Longview should win this game by at least 2-3 tds.

They'll definitely be a force come playoff time from everything I've seen and heard about them.

I think this will be a good test for the Lobos. One they should be winning, but a good test none the less.

Posted this on the 6A board but will post it here as well...

Through 3 weeks, Longview sits at 740 yards rushing/719 yards passing. For any Longview team, that's just insane.

Lobos have a 66% pass completion to just 46% for their opponents.

Haynes has yet to throw an interception this season.
