A&M is the number one team in the country in forcing punts and 3 and outs. They force a punt 59% of drives against them. That’s pretty impressive. They also force so many 3 and outs and that’s partly why the play count is lower this year. They are still giving up a few big plays a game though, thus the higher yards per play. Because they are so good at forcing 3 and outs, they may force 3 straight 3 and outs, and then give up a a couple of 40 yard plays. So giving up ~100 yards on 16 plays over 4 drives leads to a higher yards per play then giving up ~100 yards on 25 plays over 4 drives because you gave up a first down or two before forcing the punt each drive. In other words, this isn’t just the offense protecting the defense by holding the ball more, the defense is also doing a very good job forcing teams off the field. TOP does help though. I think clemson surprised us because they have played down for a couple of weeks, but they are still probably the second most talented team.
