A Study of Exodus

Exodus 26

By: Jim Crews

We study the revealed details of the Tabernacle, because we learn in the book of Hebrews that the Tabernacle was a precursor to the Church.

Exodus 26: 1 - 6

They were commanded to make a tabernacle with ten curtains. The exact specifications of this were revealed to them detail by detail by God.

Exodus 26: 7 - 14

The details of exactly how the curtains were to be made are revealed by God here. The pattern had to be followed exactly, or it would not be acceptable or pleasing to God. This is a very important lesson as we study the New Testament and His Church with its work and worship.

Exodus 26: 15 - 30

Here again, they would not have known how to build this to please God, had God not revealed it to them. The same goes for us today. God has revealed to us how we are to work for Him and worship Him. We cannot deviate one iota from His revealed pattern if we wish to be pleasing and acceptable to Him.

Exodus 26: 31-36

Here is the forerunner to the Church, which we see described and revealed for us in Hebrews. God commanded a veil to be made, and He gave specific details to the pattern. This veil was to separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. The mercy seat was to be placed on the Ark of Testimony in the Most Holy Place. The table and the lampstand were to be set outside the veil.

Exodus 27

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 27: 1 - 8

They were commanded to make an altar with bronze horns on each corner. God gave the pattern for this altar with specific details. They people were expected to make it exactly as He had specified, if it were to be pleasing to Him. God revealed to us the pattern for worship in this age through the writers of the New Testament. If we are to be pleasing to Him, we will follow His pattern of worship faithfully.

Exodus 27: 9 - 19

Here, God details how the court of the Tabernacle was to be made. Notice, God reveals every specific detail to the Israelites, and they are expected to follow His instructions to the letter. This is why we do not use instrumental music today. God revealed to us that the music used in worshipping Him is to be vocal, with the melody made in our hearts. We are expected to follow every detail God revealed to us, IF we are trying to please Him and not ourselves.

Exodus 27: 20 - 21

God commanded the people to bring pure beaten olive oil for the lamp to be setup to burn regularly. Aaron and his sons would tend the lamp daily. This was to be done from generation to generation.

Exodus 28

Exodus 28: 1 - 5

Aaron and his offspring were to serve as priests. The Israelites were commanded to make garments for the priests that would consecrate them before God.

Exodus 28: 6 - 14

Here, God details how the ephod is to be made. An ephod was a sleeveless garment. This one is to be adorned with two onyx stones, each one having the name of six of the sons of Jacob engraved on it. This was so Aaron could bear their names before God as a remembrance.

Exodus 28: 15 - 30

They were to make a breastpiece of judgment. It was to be made in the same style as the ephod. The breastpiece would have twelve stones in four rows. Each would be named after a tribe of Israel. This was so Aaron, or the future High Priests, could bear the names of the tribes near their heart in memory. Aaron was to bear the judgment of the people on his heart before God regularly.

Exodus 28: 31 - 35

The robe that covered the ephod was to be blue, with an opening for the head in the middle. It was to have bells on it. This was to be worn by Aaron when he ministered, and the sound would be heard when he went into the Holy Place before God, so that he would not die.

Exodus 28: 36 - 38

A forehead plate was to be made of pure gold. “Holy is the LORD” was to be engraved on it. Aaron was to bear the guilt of the people from the holy things that they consecrated. It was to be worn regularly on his forehead.

Exodus 28: 39

Here, a coat and a turban are commanded.

Exodus 28: 40 - 43

Aaron’s sons should have coats, sashes, and hats made for them. They were to be put on them and anointed so as to ordain and consecrate Aaron and his sons so that they could serve as priests. They were to wear undergarments that went from their hips to their thighs. This was to be worn when they were ministering in the Holy Place, or they would die. This is a good example of modesty. We should be covered from neck to thighs.

Exodus 29

By: Jim Crews

Remember, we study the Old Testament because God included it in His written Word as an example for us.

I Corinthians 10: 6, 11

While we are studying these next few books, keep in mind that what we are reading are the very Words of God.

II Timothy 3: 16

We should pay them proper respect and reverence as we study them, and seek to find the example God was wanting us to see.

Matthew 7: 7 - 8

Acts 17: 11

Exodus 29: 1 - 9

God now tells how the priests will be consecrated in order to serve Him. They were to take a bull and two unblemished rams, along with unleavened bread, cakes, and wafers. The unleavened cakes were to be mixed with oil and the unleavened wafers were to be smeared with oil. A fine wheat flour was to be made from this. They were to be put into a basket and brought with the bull and rams to the entrance to the Tabernacle. Aaron and his sons were to be brought there as well, dressed in the clothes God had commanded in a previous chapter.

They were to be anointed with oil, and the priesthood established forever from then. Remember, forever means until the end of the current age being spoken of, so they were to be priests until the end of the Mosaic Age.

Exodus 29: 10 - 14

Here God details how the bull is to be used. It is to be killed at the entrance to the Tabernacle and its blood put on the horns of the altar and poured around the basin. Some of the organs were to be burned on the altar. The flesh and dung were to be burned outside the camp as a sin offering.

Exodus 29: 15 - 28

Here God details how the rams are to be used. One of them is to be killed and its blood thrown on the sides of the altar. It was to be cut into pieces with its entrails and legs washed and placed together with its head on the altar and burnt. This was a pleasing aroma to God and a food offering.

The second ram was to be killed and part of its blood was to be rubbed on the right ears, right thumbs, and right big toes of Aaron and his sons. The rest was to be thrown on the sides of the altar. Aaron and his sons were then to be sprinkled with blood from the altar. We also see that a portion of the sacrifice was to be given to the priests as a contribution. This was how they got their food.

Exodus 29: 29 - 30

The clothing commanded for Aaron was to be passed down generation to generation.

Exodus 29: 31 - 34

The ram of ordination was to be boiled and eaten by Aaron and his sons. The bread was to be eaten by them as well. Any leftovers were to be burned with fire. No outsiders could eat of this, either, because it was holy.

Exodus 29: 35 - 37

This atonement ritual was to go on for seven days. A bull was to be offered every day of the seven days as a sin offering for atonement. The altar was to be purified afterwards.

Exodus 29: 38 - 46

Two lambs, each a year old, were to be offered daily. One was to be sacrificed in the morning, and the other at twilight. This was to be done every day at the entrance to the Tabernacle. This was a pleasing sacrifice to God, who would dwell among Israel and be their God.

Exodus 30

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 30:1-10

In this section, God details how the altar of incense is to be built. Aaron was to burn incense on it every morning and every twilight. This was to be done by the High Priest throughout their generations as an incense offering to God. Unauthorized incense was to never be burned in it. God reveals the pattern for worship, and anything not authorized by Him is sin, and unacceptable worship. They were also never to offer burnt offerings, grain offerings, or drink offerings on this altar. Once a year, Aaron, or his successor was to make atonement on the horns with the blood from the sin offering.

Exodus 30:11-16

After Moses took the census, each person was to give ransoms for their lives to God. Each person, from 20 years old and up, had to give half a shekel to God. The rich were not to give more, nor were the poor to give less. This was to make atonement for their lives. This money was to be given for the service of the tent of meeting. In our age, Jesus paid the ransom for us by His willing sacrifice.

I Timothy 2:5-6

I Peter 1:17-19

Revelation 5:9-10

Exodus 30:17-21

God details the specifications for making a bronze basin to be placed between the Tabernacle and the altar. It is to be filled with water, and the priests were to wash their hands and feet before entering and after exiting the Tabernacle, so that they would not die.

Exodus 30:22-33

God specifies the recipe for the oil which will be used to anoint the Tabernacle and all of the other items He commanded them to build. This would consecrate these items, making them and whatever touched them holy. Aaron and his sons were to be anointed with this oil so they could be consecrated to serve as priests. This oil was never to be poured into the body of an ordinary person, and no other like it should ever be made. Anyone who made any like it, or poured it on an outsider was to be cut off from the people.

Exodus 30:34-38

God also gives the recipe for a special incense to be made. Some of it was to be beat very small and put before the testimony in the Tabernacle. This incense was not to be made for personal use. Anyone using it for perfume was to be cut off from the people.

Exodus 31

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 31:1-11

God filled Bezalel, son of Uri and grandson of Hur, with the Holy Spirit. He would allow Bezalel to be able to build and craft all of the items commanded by God. He did the same for Oholiab son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. He also did this for all able men, so that they could get these items built exactly to the specified pattern revealed to them.

Exodus 31:12-17

The Sabbath was to be kept above all, because it was a sign between God and Israel for all their generations that they might know it is God who set them apart from the rest of the nations of the world. It was to be kept, because it was holy to them. Anyone who profaned the Sabbath was to be executed. Anyone doing work on the Sabbath was to be cut off from the people. They had six days they could get their work done in. The seventh was the Sabbath of rest, a holy day for God. The Sabbath was to be kept and observed throughout their generations as a sign that God created the universe in six days and rested in the seventh and was refreshed.

Exodus 31:18

When God had finished speaking with Moses on Mt. Sinai, He gave him the tablets of testimony, which were tablets of stone written with the finger of God.

Exodus 32

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 32:1-6

The people didn’t know if Moses was coming back or not, because he delayed returning. They demanded an idol be built so that they could worship it. Aaron took up all the gold and made a calf and an altar to offer sacrifice to this idol. They rose up early the next day and offered sacrifice to this idol. They sat down to eat and drink, then rose up to play.

Exodus 32:7-10

God told Moses what had happened, how the people had quickly turned away from Him and worshipped an idol. God wanted to destroy them all right then and make a great nation from the descendants of Moses. This seems to have been a test for Moses.

Exodus 32:11-14

Moses passed the test. Instead of taking God's offer, Moses plead for mercy for the people. He pleaded for God to remember the Patriarchs. God relented when Moses begged for mercy for the people.

Exodus 32:15-20

Moses then went down with the two tablets God had written for the people. The writing, on both sides, was the writing of God, done by His own finger. Joshua heard the noise in the camp and thought they were under attack. As they got closer, he heard that it was singing. When they got close to the camp, they saw the idol and the people dancing. Moses anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets down and broke them at the foot of the mountain. He took the calf, burned it, ground it to a fine powder, put it in their water, and made them drink it.

Exodus 32:21-24

Moses demanded that Aaron tell him what these people did to him to get him to lead them to such a sin. Aaron, taking no blame for his role in this, blamed the people’s stubbornness and said they were the evil ones. Aaron claims he took their gold, threw it in the fire, and this calf mysteriously appeared without his help making it at all. Sounds fishy to me, too.

Exodus 32:25-29

Moses called for all who follow God to come to him. The Levites gathered around him. They were to g through the camp and execute those who refused to repent. Three thousand men were killed that day by the Levites. Moses told them that today, they had been ordained for the service of God.

Exodus 32:30-34

Moses confronted the people with their sin the next day, saying he would go to the mountain seeking to atone for that sin. Moses went to God, confessed the sin, and asked for God to forgive them. If He would not forgive them, Moses asked to be blotted out of God's book of life. God told Moses those who had sinned would be blotted out of His book. Moses was to go lead this people to the Promised Land. His angel would go in front of them. God also promised He would visit this sin upon them.

Exodus 32:35

God sent a plague in the people for worshipping the idol Aaron had made. Aaron’s tall tale didn’t fool God for one second.

Exodus 33

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 33:1-3

God told Moses to leave Sinai and begin the journey to the Promised Land. He would send an angel before them to drive the Canaanites out of the land. God would not travel among them, though, because they were a stubborn people and He didn’t want to destroy them.

Exodus 33:4-6

The people mourned when they heard this. God told them they were stiff necked, and  He would not travel among them for a single moment, lest He end up consuming them. He told them to take off their ornaments so He would know what to do with them. The people stripped themselves of ornaments from Mt. Horeb onward.

Exodus 33:7-11

Moses used to pitch the tent outside the camp, far away, and called it the tent of meeting. Everyone who sought God would go outside the camp to the tent of meeting. When Moses would go to the tent, the people would rise up and watch from their tent doors until he had entered the tent. When Moses went in, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance to the tent, and God would speak to Moses.

When the people saw the pillar, they would rise and worship at their tent doors. God spoke with Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his assistant, a young man named Joshua the sin of Nun, would remain.

Exodus 33:12-16

Moses wanted God to tell him who He would send with him to lead these people to Canaan. God had told Moses he had found favor in His sight. Moses wants God to reveal to him His ways, so that he will be sure to continue to find favor in God’s sight. The fact that God was with them showed that this people were different from every other group of people on the planet.

Exodus 33:17-23

God said He would do this for Moses, because He knew Moses by name and he had found favor in God’s sight. Moses wanted to see the glory of God. God agreed to allow all of His goodness to pass before Moses, and He would declare His name, YHWH to Moses. God also says He will show grace to whomever He chooses, and mercy to whomever He chooses. However, Moses could not look upon His face, or he would die. However, Moses could stand in the cleft of a rock while God passed by, and be protected. God would cover Moses with His hand until He passed by, then He would remove His hand so Moses could see His back, but not His face.

Exodus 34

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 34:1-9

God told Moses to cut two tablets of stone like the first ones he broke, and He would write the words He had written before. He was to go back up onto Sinai alone in the morning and present himself to God. Moses obeyed Him. God descended in a cloud and proclaimed His name there. He passed before Moses and proclaimed the LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their descendants to the third and fourth generations. Moses quickly bowed his head to the ground and worshipped. Moses then asked for forgiveness for the people, and asked God to take them for an inheritance.

Exodus 34:10

God told Moses He was making a covenant. Before all the people, He would do marvels that had not been created in the earth or in any nation. All would see the work God was going to do with this nation.

Exodus 34:11-16

Moses was to observe what God would command that day. God would drive out all of the Canaanites before them. However, the Israelites were not to make treaties with any of the Canaanites, lest it be a snare for them. They were to tear down every altar and idol in the land, because the Israelites were to worship no other god than YAHWEH, because He is a jealous God. If they made any treaties with the Canaanites, they would be led astray into following and worshipping their idols. They were not to even intermarry with the Canaanites.

Exodus 34:17

They were not to make for themselves gods of cast metal.

Exodus 34:18-20

They were to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. In the month God told them to do this, they were to go seven days eating unleavened bread. This was to be done in the month of Abib, which is the month they came out of Egypt. All firstborn belonged to God. Livestock was His. The firstborn of a donkey could be redeemed with a lamb, or if not, its neck was to be broken. The firstborn sons of the people could be redeemed in the manner God had previously described. None were to come to God empty handed.

In our age, those of us who have heard, believed, and obeyed the Gospel are the firstborn. We were redeemed by the perfect sacrifice of the Messiah.

Hebrews 12:22-24

II Thessalonians 2:13

James 1:18

Revelation 14:4

Exodus 34:21-24

They had six days in which they could get their work done. They were to rest on the seventh. No matter if it was planting season or harvest season, they were to rest on the seventh day.

They were to observe the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of wheat and harvest. They were to observe the Feast of Ingathering at years end. Three times during the year, all males were to appear before God. He would cast out nations before them and enlarge their borders. No enemy would attack during these three times a year they presented themselves before God.

Exodus 34:25-26

The blood of His sacrifice was not to be offered with anything leavened. The sacrifice at the Feast of the Passover was not to be left until morning. The best of the firstfruits were to be brought to the House of God. They were never to boil a young goat 8n it’s mother’s milk.

Exodus 34:27-28

God told Moses to write this down, because this was His covenant with Israel. Moses was there forty days and nights. He didn’t eat or drink anything. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

Exodus 34:29-33

When Moses came down with the two tablets, he didn’t know his face was shining because he had been talking to God. Aaron and the people saw this, and were afraid to go near him. Moses called to them and they returned to him, and he talked to them. He commanded from them all the things God had revealed to him on Sinai, and then veiled his face.

Exodus 34:34-35

Whenever Moses went in to speak with God, he removed the veil until he came out. When he came out, he told the people what God had commanded. He would them cover his face once again with the veil.

Exodus 35

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 35:1-3

Moses assembled the congregation and told them the things God commanded. They had six days to do work, but the seventh day was a Sabbath of solemn rest, Holy to God. Anyone working on the Sabbath was to be executed. They were not to even kindle a fire in their homes on the Sabbath.

Exodus 35:4-9

They were to make a contribution to God. Those with a generous heart were to contribute all of the items needed to build and make the things God had commanded the, to make.

Exodus 35:10-19

All those who were skilled craftsmen were to contribute their time and skill to making the things God had commanded them to make.

Exodus 35:20-29

The people departed from Moses. Those who were moved to make these contributions did so. Willing men and women made these contributions. Everyone who could contribute something to this did. Those who had gold, silver, or jewels gave them. Those who had the linen and cloths gave them. Those who could build the items or make the clothing did.

This freewill offering was made by them all. Our offering in this age is a freewill offering. We are to give cheerfully as we have prospered on the first day of every week when we come together collectively to worship.

I Corinthians 16:1-2

II Corinthians 8:1-15

II Corinthians 9

Exodus 35:30-35

Moses then told how Bezalel and Oholiab had been given abilities by the Holy Spirit to construct the Tabernacle and all of the items commanded for it.

Exodus 36

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 36:1

Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled craftsman God had blessed were to work on getting the Tabernacle built.

Exodus 36:2-7

Moses called all these craftsmen together and gave them the contribution from the people so that they could begin their work. The people kept bringing more things everyday. They were bringing more than was needed, so Moses told them they had contributed enough.

Exodus 36:8-38

The craftsmen then made the Tabernacle exactly to the specified pattern revealed to them by God. In our age, the pattern for worship was revealed to us through direct commands from the Holy Spirit through the apostles, examples of first century Christians recorded in the New Testament, or logical inferences we make from a command or example without changing the command or example.

We are to sing, pray, partake of the Lord’s Supper, give a contribution, and study the Word. A lot of people began to Number the items and some forget to actually worship because they spend so much time counting and separating items. We should not forget that worship is to be done in spirit and truth. We should do all the things commanded, without having to assign them numbers and places.

Exodus 37

Exodus 37:1-9

The Ark of the Covenant was made exactly to the revealed specifications of God. The pattern was followed without variations.

Exodus 37:10-16

The table and vessels for the table were made to the exact specifications revealed by God, with no variations.

Exodus 37:17-24

The lamp stand was made to the exact specifications revealed by God with no variations.

Exodus 37:25-28

The altar was made to the exact specifications revealed by God with no variations.

Exodus 37:29

The anointing oil was made to the exact recipe revealed by God, with no variations.

The pattern for use of collected money was revealed to us through New Testament examples. Money collected by the congregation is to be used to help needy members of our group, to help needy Christians in other places, to aid needy congregations, to aid our congregation in worship and work for the Lord. Not one time do we see the local contribution being given over to a human institution such as an orphan home, a school, or a sponsoring church. The pattern is there for a reason. Variations from the revealed pattern are sin.

Exodus 38:1-7

The altar of burnt offerings was made exactly to the specified pattern revealed to them by God with no variations.

Exodus 38:8

The bronze basin was made exactly to the revealed specifications from God with no variations.

Exodus 38:9-20

The court of the Tabernacle was made to the exact specifications revealed by God with no variations.

The pattern for music in our worship is revealed in the New Testament. We are told to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, teaching one another with our singing, and making the melody in our hearts.

Colossians 3:16

Ephesians 5:19

Not one musical instrument is ever seen in the worship of the Church on earth in the New Testament. Making the variation to this Divine pattern revealed by God by adding unauthorized instruments is sin.

Exodus 38:21-23

These records of the building of the Tabernacle were recorded as ordered by Moses. The record keepers were the Levites under Ithamar the son of Aaron. Bezalel and Oholiab made everything commanded by God to the revealed specifications from God with no variations.

Exodus 38:24-31

The record continues. 29 talents of gold and 730 shekels were used in making the sanctuary. 100 talents and 1775 shekels of silver was used. This was half a shekel for everyone listed in the census of men over age 20. That turned out to be 603,550 men. 70 talents of bronze and 2400 shekels was collected.

Exodus 39

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 39:1

The garments for the priests were made exactly as God specifies with no variations.

Exodus 39:2-7

The ephod was made to the exact specifications revealed by God with no variations.

Exodus 39:8-21

The breastpiece was made to the exact specifications revealed by God with no variations.

Exodus 39:22-26

The robe of the ephod was made exactly as God commanded with no variations.

Exodus 39:27-29

The coats, turban, caps, undergarments, and sash were made exactly as God revealed with no variations.

Exodus 39:30-31

The plate of the crown was made to the exact specifications revealed by God with no variations.

Exodus 39:32-43

All the work of making the Tabernacle was completed exactly as God specifically revealed that it was to be done without a single addition or subtraction from His commands. All of the items were brought to the Tabernacle and placed exactly as God revealed with no variations. God revealed and commanded, the people obeyed without adding or subtracting anything from His revelation. Moses saw all the work that had been done and blessed them.

In this age, we are to partake of the Lord’s Supper as a memorial of the death of the Messiah who freely gave Himself as the sacrifice for our sins. God revealed the pattern for the celebration of this memorial in the New Testament. The Lord’s Supper is to be taken in the assembly of saints on every first day of every week. Those who only take it quarterly, monthly, or on man made holidays have made a variation to the revealed pattern. Those who take it on any day OTHER than the first day of the week have made a variation to the revealed pattern. Both cases are sin.

Exodus 40

By: Jim Crews

Exodus 40:1-8

God told Moses to erect the Tabernacle on the first day of the first month. The Ark was to be put in it with the veil. All of the other items were to be put into it and arranged exactly as God had specified.

Exodus 40:9-15

He was then to take the anointing oil and anoint the Tabernacle and all the items, making them holy. Aaron and his sons were to be brought to the entrance and washed with water. Aaron was to put on the Holy garments to be anointed and consecrated to serve as priest. The same was to be done to his sons in their coats. This anointing made them a perpetual priesthood through the Mosaic Age.

Exodus 40:16-33

Moses did everything exactly as God commanded that it be done with no variations.

Exodus 40:34-38

When this was finished, a cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of God filled the Tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter because of this. Throughout their journey, when the cloud was taken up from the Tabernacle, the people would set out.

If the cloud was not taken up, they remained where they were. The cloud was on the Tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night. It was like this for the entirety of their journey.
