Playoff football to return to Tomato Bowl for first time in 16 years

A long playoff drought for the Historic Tomato Bowl will come to an end late next week when the venue will host its first high school football playoff game in 16 years.

The No. 8-ranked Alto Yellowjackets, the District 10-2A-I champions, will take on Cayuga, the fourth place team out of District 9-2A-I, at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the newly renovated facility.

According to Matt Montgomery of jhs-sports.com, the Tomato Bowl last hosted a post season affair in 2003 when Elysian Fields and Frankston met in the bi-district round in downtown Jacksonville.

This is the first season since the Tomato Bowl went through a $15 million renovation that brought the facility up to modern day standards.

Another bi-district game is also on the Tomato Bowl docket for next week.

On Friday, Nov. 15, Carthage and Athens will meet in a Class 4A-I test.

Area football preview

Alto Yellowjackets (9-0, 4-0) vs Union Grove Lions (4-5, 1-3)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Cam'ron Matthews Field at Jacket Stadium

What to Watch For — An Alto win will enable the Mean Sting to wrap up an undefeated regular season for the first time since 2015. The Yellowjackets are playing top-notch schoolboy football on offense and defense. The Yellowjackets should win with ease. Look for the Lion offense to struggle against a nasty Yellowjacket defense.

Alto’s Aaron Skinner sets bar high with ASB Player of the Week honor

By Caleb Beames | video included

ALTO, Texas (KTRE) - The Alto Yellojackets continue to impress the voters of the American State Bank Red Zone Player of the Week award. For the third time this year the 2A school has been home to a weekly winner. No other school has had more than two weekly winners in a season since the award was started.

Skinner had 19 carries for over 250 yards and five touchdowns in Alto’s 57-8 win over Hawkins to claim the 10-2A DI District title.

“It speaks volumes with the types of kids we have here and them buying into the system,” Alto head coach Ricky Meeks said. “It is about the team. If you put yourself into the team then the results that you want are going to happen.”

Skinner joins his teammates Todd Duplichain and Harmon West as a winner of the weekly $2,500 scholarship. Skinner has seen his other praised and while he is happy with the award he was not ready to brag.

“It is special but as long as I get to share it with my team that is memorable,” Skinner said. Coming out here and getting to play on Friday nights and have fun with my boys."

Alto will have senior night this week against Union Grove before entering the postseason as the No.1 seed out of their district.

So this one finished as expected. These should be the matchups next week.

1 Alto - gets Cayuga (Thurs at Jacksonville)

2 Carlisle - get Leon (Thurs at Westwood)

3 Hawkins - gets Nomangee

4 Big Sandy - gets Centerville

This could actually be a sweep for the district. Just according to what BS and Hawkins teams show up. Pulling for all of them.

Hope our district sweeps, but I think Centerville will be a tough out for BS. 🤷‍♂️

Hopefully they show up. Have done a lot better over the last 2 games. If we play them how we played Carlisle we will be just fine. We play them how we played Hawkins, we will get blown out!

Well hopefully, the right team will show up.........for the SENIOR parents sake! lol

For some reason, two of the big linemen from Hawkins walked off the field during the game friday and sat in the stands with their parents.. Still trying to figure out what went down there?

My source from Hawkins said it was only one player and he didn't want to do what the coaches wanted him to do, so he decided to take a break 🤷‍♂️.  Their best defensive lineman.
