Crawford
ROUGHRIDER COLISEUM: CONSTRUCTION COULD START BY YEAR'S END Wed, 10/02/2019 - 7:04pm Facility will have gym seating for about 1,300 which can be expanded with seating on the floor for graduations and other events MIKE ELSWICK Center ISD officials on Wednesday unveiled details of the district's new 46,000-square-foot multi-purpose event center. Center ISD Supt. Dr. James Hockenberry said construction could start as soon as December on the 2,200-person capacity facility with seating for 1,300. โThis has been a long time coming to reveal this,โ he said. โI can't tell you the amount of work that has gone into the planning, the design and the thought, the number of people that have been brought to the table and all of the considerations that have been made.โ Three volunteer members of the Center ISD Board of Trustees have participated on the design team. Those have been Matthew Mattauer, board president, and members Deuce Wulf and Casey Lout, who have met about once a week for several months, he said. โWe hope what you see brings about a lot of school pride,โ Hockenberry said. โIt's going to be the gem of this area and it's going to be for you students and for the community and all who want to participate and be part of the school district and need this facility for the things they like to do.โ The multi-purpose event center will be connected to the existing wing of Center High School which houses the band hall, he said. The structure will be located facing Roughrider Drive where a grove of pine trees now sits. David Golden architect with the Lufkin based McKinley-Golden Associates, said in addition to the gym, the facility will house three girls locker rooms on one side and three boys locker rooms on the other side. โIt will have a stage large enough to hold the hold band,โ he said at a Center ISD Board of Trustees meeting held at the high school. Tiered seating will be included for the 1,300 seating capacity gym with a full-sized court and a concourse surrounding the second floor of the structure. As a former Roughrider, Golden said he was especially excited about being involved in the project. โThe seating capacity, the audience/spectator area, is about 1,300 seats with additional seating on the gym floor for graduations and other events,โ Golden said. The facility is designed to handle future anticipated growth, he said. He estimated construction will take approximately 14 months to complete once it starts, putting completion sometime in early 2021. Hockenberry said the back of the stage area will be situated so the band can enter from the rear of the stage. โIt will have all the latest digital enhancements, it's going to be really nice,โ he said. Bid construction proposals will go out about Oct. 22 with bids due back about three weeks later, Hockenberry said. The upper level will have a concourse going around the gym area. The project is part of about $30 million worth of bonds voters in the school district approved in May 2018.
