🟡 LSU 2020 Thread

LSU is going to look vastly different next season.

5 starters are graduating: QB, 2 OL, DE, CB

7 starters are leaving early for the draft: 2 OL, WR, RB, 2 LB's, S

12 starters in all, 7 on offense, 5 on defense.

And, OC Joe Brady.

The way too early preseason rankings show LSU in the Top 5. I think a realistic question would be, would the Top 15 even be too high?

  • Mr. P changed the title to 🟡 LSU 2020 Thread

I've posted elsewhere that I think the SEC is going to be more "balanced" this year. That is, I don't see any one team just completely dominating the field like LSU this year (or Alabama in recent years).

With that said, I don't expect LSU to completely fall off the map. I think they could very well return to the SEC title game, but the games are going to me much more competitive this season, and I think someone might sneak away with a win here or there. By the end of the season I'm expecting some kinda "Mexican Standoff" with two or three top SEC teams each with a loss (or even two) to each other.  A&M's schedule is very favorable (and they're gonna be primed for some payback against the Tigahs).

Despite all the attrition and upheaval, I think the Bayou Bengals still have a legit shot. I say go ahead and give 'em the benefit of the doubt with a Top 5.

Definitely top 5 but this season won't be a great. The qb was really legit and you gotta expect some adjustment period. I may be in the minority but lsu takes a loss to Texas in Week 2. I could see them dropping against a Florida and or Alabama as well. 8-4 basement . 10-2 ceiling. Quarterback play will be interesting. Hopefully they have a potential back there and not miss a beat.

Lsu missing key coaches so that might play a part

Just like HS. Every year, LSU, 'Bama, and other top teams lose Seniors AND Juniors to the NFL. Every year they keep coming back. Circle of life.

Of course nobody expects the Tigers to duplicate the success of this year, they had arguably the best season ever.

But, that does not mean that they will not be good, or great.

Pre Season Polls, or really ANY Polls, tend to be the subject of much contention between the makers and Fans.

I don't put much stock in them at all. Much like this year, I just wait until the game is played, and then we KNOW who is best.

Everyone is leaving that I expected to leave, except Queen.  He should have stayed 1 more year.  And while I don't think he is NFL ready, he was a solid MLB for LSU.  Him going hurts the defense worse than anyone else leaving.

On offense, I think the foundation is there, but it will all hinge on the QB play.  Still have solid WRs and RBs.   OL is expected to hold up.  So the QB leaving and Joe Brady...  we will see how bad that hurts the offense... especially early in the season

The game this year will be like last year coming in with the situation for both teams flip flopped.  LSU will be the home team replacing a bunch of starters and Texas the visiting team returning a veteran, experienced team.

I think it's a mistake to approach with the mentality of, 'LSU is 'definitely' a Top 5 team'.

Are there teams that lose key players every year, and replace them with someone just as good? Of course. Is LSU one of those teams? I'd say mostly, but let's not put them in the same category with the recent Bama's and Clemson's either.

Replacing talent is one thing. But...

4 starting OL?

The top 4 tacklers from your defense.

That's a big hit, but also areas that fall in that realm of, next man up. But to think that someone is going to come in a fill the void left by Joe Burrow? Be realistic. The season, and productivity, that Burrow just had is unmatched. You're kidding yourself if you think it's just 'next man up' in replacing him. And to top it off, the OC is also gone. While that's not always THAT big of a deal, we're talking about a guy who spent ONE season at LSU. Is it coincidence that his 1 season just happened to coincide with the greatest QB play we've seen in a single season? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, that's a BIG loss.

I agree with WETSU on this one, I think LSU WILL enter the season Top 5, and it will solely be out of respect for them being the defending champion. I do not believe they finish Top 5.

Likely losing their top 3 in the game DC to Baylor now...

we are about to find out what Ed O is made of. I personally think this is going to be a challenge for him. LSU fans will give him a pass this next season, but his hires are going to be extremely important.

This has everything to do with who he hires.  Not who he is.  An 8-4 season wouldn’t be the end of the world if he gets everything settled and follows with an 10 win + season

I still don’t know if Ed O is an elite coach yet. I mean we were literally wondering if he would survive the year this time last season. He does get credit for recognizing he needed a change and bringing on Brady. That’s enough to warrant giving him 2-3 more years and open reigns on who he hires imo. But I still think in 4-5 years LSU will be talking about letting him go. He caught lightning in a bottle, but I am just not convinced he is going to be the right guy long term. Like we said, his hires this year will go a long way in how effective I think he can be there long term.

Gene chizik 2.0?

Gene Chizik was actually a really good DC at one point. I’m not sure ED O is even that. But he is a much better HC than Chizik imo. ED O just needs to make the right hires. That will be his career from here on out. And I respect that. Dabo might be the best HC in the game right now and that’s his approach.

@MavGrad99 what’s the QB situation looking like? Would LSU be in the market for a QB in the transfer portal?

Brennan looks like the shoe in starter.  Some think he may get pressure from one of the Freshman, but Brennan is supposedly a great passer...  we will see.

As far as the transfer portal, I am not sure Ed O is going to go shopping for a QB, but if a ready-made passing QB is available and wants to come to LSU (let's say Baker Mayfield 2.0), then I am sure he wouldn't turn them down.

An average coach doesn't just win a National Championship in today's game just being average.  He is a great coach.  Maybe not elite, but great.  He is a smart coach.  How many coaches can you identify that looks at their team and says "We have a problem.  We needs to fix it."  Then instead of putting a few strips of duct tape on it, they call in the best specialists from around the world and make it the best damned product ever seen in less than a year.

Ed O will make good hires...  Does he need to replace Joe Brady?  I am not sure that he does.  Why?  I believe Ensminger knew every play and the concept behind every play.  Joe Brady was the installer, but Ensminger was still the playcaller the entire season.  Now, the bigger question is, who do you hire as DC?  Is this an internal promotion?   I've heard a variety of names.  The biggest name being Jeff Fisher.  Some are saying Mike Archer, former LSU Head Coach, now an XFL coach in Tampa.  Who knows?  It will be up in the air for a bit since Aranda just left yesterday.

Everyone in Houston seems to think D'Eriq King is heading to Baton Rouge...

You already got that once. I'm not sure you are allowed to have two lol.

He would make a solid WR.  The last thing we need is another QB that can’t throw the ball and hit a target pst 2 yards.  That was almost every QB we had from Matt Flynn to Mettenberger.

Agreed. Saw him against Washington State. That was a terrible defense and he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. He is wicked fast, but terrible on deep throws. I'm shocked he isn't staying at Houston. I think they could be really good if he stayed...

Yep. Pretty much my response to the "King to OU" talk. Hurts was the exception because of his 'Bama pedigree and his ridiculous physical talents. D'Eriq is a smaller and less mature version of Hurts, with even worse throwing mechanics.

Hard pass.

If he wants to be a QB, he should give Ms State a call.
