Joe Pesci

Something I’ve always wondered, is how did Hollywood always did such a good job of convincing us all that Joe Pesci qualified as “the muscle” or tough in all his movies? Seriously, the way they and especially he portrayed his characters was spot on for getting everyone to look past his small stature and buy into his legitimacy as the strong arm.

In Casino there’s a scene where Pesci and a mob associate go into a bookie’s gambling house in Vegas. Pesci lied and told the bookie he bet exactly the opposite of the way he told the bookie at the time of the bet and strong arms the bookie into giving him a huge wad of cash. The narration (Robert D/Sam/“Ace”) says “Who’s going to muscle Nicky, Nicky is the muscle?..”

I've known a lot of short people who think they could beat up anybody.  They usually lost the attitude after they'd been given a beat down more than once.  I see them like chihuahua's they can sound like the most vicious dog in the world, but they'll tuck their tail and run when confronted.  My favorite scenes were in Goodfella's with Spider.  It was fun to watch him, but it made you hate his character for the way he was.
