TheShadowKnows
I am almost 50 and as Yogi Berra said "you can learn a lot by watching" so this is some observation from on top of the press box. 1) One Act Play...replace the pl with a g and that is the way your boys will be on the field of competition. OAP does not build into the boys any type of masculinity, and a rule of thumb about OAP, is the kids/adults, in it are way more sexually active/perverted then any other place in the schoolhouse. 2) The community not wanting the kids to be coached hard. How dare you coach the lords anointed. So If you as a parent takes offense to your kid getting yelled at, you are hindrance to your kids future success, both on and off the field, if you make an issue out of it. Price Carlisle, used to be a horrible place to try to win at, but Coach, coaches them boys up, coaches them hard and demands excellence ! Coach em hard and hug em later. Some communities want you to hug em now and coach em later. 3) The weight room and track season are seen as detrimental to success, because the kids will be sore or tired. 4) Any type of vicitmhood or entitlement mentality. These two cancers have everything to do with the character of the school at the lower levels and community members who think they and theirs do not have to obey the rules. 5) Hover Mothers- Usually these are divorced folks who feel that it is their job, their right and Gods calling in their life, as an adult, to right all the wrongs that they perceived was done to them and then through injecting past experiences on present situations they then play the knight in shining armor to save their princess ( and most of the time it is their son) thus they feel better about their past and now the guilt of their past is redeemed through the blood of coaches, or anybody else, who reminds them of one of their ex-lovers 6) Speaking of Ex-lovers.... Ex-Lovers on the school board and THE MEMBERS do not want their spouses to know or remember about this ex-lover. 7)School board members with an axe to grind, because they are looking for any reason to cut down anything that threatens their power. 8- Adults who enable and support bad behavior from kids. Some adults think that it is their job to save kids from their sins or the curse of believing like their parents which hinders society from progressing forward, so they think hugs and love, without fear, will make the kids see the light and thus enable and make excuses for the misbehavior. 9) Tell me what you think, we may agree, we may agree and be sitting in front of the same store, but be in different parts of the parking lot, we may disagree and i can live with that, because I am still right

TbPanther
Only one I can disagree with is #1... We've had a couple of SC MVP's and several TSWA 1st team all-state players that participate in OAP.

Total agreement on #3 and not just the baseball aspect - they need to look at these golfers now - these guys are getting jacked during the season adding muscle to hit it further than the competition. You can't tell me that extra strength during the season won't help on the baseball diamond or on the basketball court!!

nationalpastime
I think 5 should be a sub section of a full parental problem called lawn mower parents. 5. Lawn mower parents. They are the new hybrid coming out who no longer hover, but push through to get their way because they make above 25,000 in a town. They are used to running the local little league programs, the men are deacons/elders at the church (God forbid a woman is in charge of anything in the church except the youth program), and they're a 5th generation last name that doesn't hold up anywhere else. This is to include: 5A. The little league dad. He was either cut by the coaching staff or wasn't even a starter on JV. It's not his problem his kids genetic pool can't make it out of a rain drop but rather you as the coach because he won games as a "coach" whether it was in football, the baseball fields, softball fields, Little Dribblers, AAU Track, or all of the aforementioned. He is notorious for screaming "throw the ball" on running plays and "run the ball" on passing plays. Little junior will never live up to his expectation but because of his perfect specimen drop off it can't be all on him and will start to critique other players and blame your lack of knowledge or ability to build relationships with kids as junior's short-comings. 5B. Hover Mothers- Usually these are divorced folks who feel that it is their job, their right and Gods calling in their life, as an adult, to right all the wrongs that they perceived was done to them and then through injecting past experiences on present situations they then play the knight in shining armor to save their princess ( and most of the time it is their son) thus they feel better about their past and now the guilt of their past is redeemed through the blood of coaches, or anybody else, who reminds them of one of their ex-lovers

BillyClydePuckett
Aint nothing wrong with OAP OR football players playing at halftime. What will kill an Athletic Program quicker than anything are HC's that only coach one sport. Not having a unified strength and conditioning program during the athletic period and all athletic practices after school. Not having an Administration that is supportive of the Athletic Program in general and the Coaching Staff specifically. School Board members that will take phone calls from parents about playing time will kill you quicker than Cancer too. Ag Teacher needs to be supportive of Athletics and Coaches need to support Ag as best they can. You need parents who dont and moan when Little Johnny comes home sore from lifting weights. These are just a few.
