Social Media and Being a Christian

Social media is “a new reality” in our lives. Just about every one of us is on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, or some other social media site. Like so many other things in our lives, social media can be either a blessing or a curse. This all depends on us and what we do with it.  When we interact on social media, we must never forget that we are children of God. The things we post will have an impact on our eternal destiny.

II Corinthians 5: 10

We must choose who we are going to serve. Will we serve God, or will we serve our own willful thoughts and actions.

Joshua 24: 14 - 15

This passage of text should serve to remind us that we must choose whom we will serve.  We are going to take the rest of the lesson today to apply this scripture to Social Media and see what we can learn.

Like most anything else in our lives, there are proper uses for social media, and there are improper uses.

Some of the proper uses are making connections. We can use social media to keep in contact with our family and our friends. Many of us have family and friends who our only contact with for most of the time is social media.

We can use social media for Bible study. Social media is a great tool to use in order to get the Word of God out to a lost and dead world. We have a Facebook page for our congregation. Each day I try to post a Bible study from Robert Turner’s Plain Talk. I also try to post our Bible lessons from Wednesday and Sunday Morning. I post the sermon of the week every Sunday as well.

We can use social media for education. Many schools have incorporated social media into their lesson plans.

Finally, we can use social media to get news. When we do this, though, we should exercise caution. Many news sites contain fake news or give opinions instead of news.

Although there are many ways to properly use social media, there are many ways to use it that are improper for a Christian. We should never use social media to spread lies, rumors, or gossip. This goes for any kind of lie, rumor, or gossip. Anything that we do not know for a fact is true, should be avoided. We should never like or share anything about anyone that we do not know to be true. We should never share or like anything that is a rumor or gossip about someone else.

We should never use social media to bully someone. This could lead to them committing suicide or other violence.

We should never use social media to seek out an affair with someone. We should never use social media to look at or send pornography.

When using social media we must remember who we serve. We serve the Lord. Jesus must govern our use in word and in deed. He must govern our activity online as well as offline.

Colossians 2: 6 - 10

Colossians 3: 17

Being online does not make us immune from Divine scrutiny. God is watching.

Ecclesiastes 12: 13

This applies not only to things that we actually post. It applies to things that we like or share. When we post something, when we like something, when we share something, we should make sure that there is no bad language on it. We should make sure that there are no bad pictures on it. We should make sure that the topics being discussed are acceptable for a Christian to be discussing.

If we post something from a Bible lesson, we must make sure it is not teaching false doctrine. We  should also make sure that the causes we are supporting in our posts are acceptable to God.

A good question to ask before posting something is what would Jesus think of this?

When we are posting, we should make sure that we don’t post anything that would bring dishonor to ourselves, our families, or to God.

Proverbs 22: 1 - 3

II Samuel 12: 14

For example, we should not do anything that will stir up strife  among others.

Galatians 5: 26

We should not do anything that will make a private matter into a public matter.

Matthew 18: 15 - 17

And we must be very careful not to allow the social media to control us.

I Corinthians 6: 12

Always take time to think before posting. There are several scriptures that support this very idea.

Matthew 7: 12

Philippians 2: 3 - 4

Philippians 4: 8

I Corinthians 10: 31

Wouldn’t it be far better to use social media to further the cause of the Lord instead of causing strife? Wouldn’t it be better to use social media to contact the sick? Wouldn’t it be better to use it to build up the discouraged? Wouldn’t it be better to use it to teach the Gospel to the lost?

Hebrews 3: 13

The best use of all for social media is evangelism.

Mark 16: 15

Acts 8: 4

There is nothing at all wrong with using social media to connect with others. However, we must remember that those connections must be used to bring glory to God, rather than bringing shame to ourselves. Don’t forget that whatever you do post will be out there forever. Even if you decide to delete it, there are those who will have already reposted it and shared it. These things can affect your employment. They can carry legal liability. Most importantly, they will affect our eternal destiny. We must be very careful about our posting habits on social media.
