For Newton the 1981 team got beat on first downs in a quarter final game with Cameron 28-28. Cameron won state.

in 1987 Newton lost to Cameron again 14-9 and Newton had a 4th and 1 at Cameron one  yard  line and didn't make it.

In 1989 Newton lost to Mexia 21-20 on a missed extra point on last play of game. We all thought it was good. We had them doubled in first downs and penetrations but lost 2 fumbles inside their ten. Mexis won state that year. Several other years Newton was a play or two from going to state.I believe Newton has only had 3 losing seasons since 1972.

1980 Bulldogs went undefeated in pre-disrict and in district play but did not even make the playoffs.  8-0-2 was their record that year. Tied Huntsville in pre district 15-15 and tied Beaumont Hebert 10-10 in district play. Huntsville beat Hebert in 3rd of playoffs on their way to winning state.

1982 Bulldogs shutout 9 of the 13 teams they faced that year.  57 points total was scored on the DAWGS with 34 of them being in the one loss of the season.  The team that beat them was Fort Bend Willowridge (state champs in 4A that year). Willowridge had a guy I am sure yall have heard of  a future NFL Hall of  Famer by the name of Thurman Thomas.

2004 in the DAWGS 1 and only final appearance they trailed by 21 three different times in the game and literally "left it all out on the field"  that day.  Sadly, it wasn't quiet enough as they lost to the Gilmer Buckeyes 49-47

The 1984 Bear team.  Only team without a loss that did not win state.

[Tied with Daingerfield, who advanced on penetrations (for you youngsters, that was how teams advanced before "overtime.")  Probably the greatest high school football game ever played in East Texas - it was at the Rose].

1998. Lost a heartbreaker to eventual state champ Grapevine in 3OT in the regional finals. Given the opposition in the other regions, Greenville would have been a heavy favorite to win state if not for the Mustangs. My brother was on that team, making it hurt a bit more. Got back to the region finals again the next year, but ran into a revenge-minded Ennis team (we knocked them off in the '98 run), and...yeah.

For Mount Pleasant

1973- Lost in finals to Cuero 21-7.

1995- A special year, beat #3 SS 24-3, went 5-0 in district. Beat SS again in Regional final. Ended up losing to Denison in semi-finals a Cotton Bowl 13-6  because of TD called back on a illegal touching of referee. They got blasted by La Marque in the finals.

1997- Lost in semis again to Denison again. They lost to La Marque in finals.

Your '95 team (bi-district) was actually our first playoff game in the previous 35 years, since 1960. You stomped us 28-7. Heck of a welcome back party.

2010 - State Finalist - L 33-27 to Daingerfield.  Very talented roster from top to bottom.

2015 - State Finalist - L 43-33 to Brock. Up 20-7 at the half before losing RB Traion Smith (128 yards, 2 TD).  One of the most productive running-backs in the history of Texas high school football.

1987 - State Semifinalist - L 34-27 to Cuero.  Lost to the Gobblers and Robert Straight on a controversial late call.  Straight leads all rushers in 4A football history.

1975 - State Quarterfinalist - L 14-6 to Hamshire-Fannett - Posted 9 shutouts and gave up 42 total points in 13 games.

1974 - State Quarterfinalist - L 10-7 to Newton.  Routed Spearman in the finals.  Only loss to Newton in 5 games.

2000 - State Quarterfinalist - L 27-26 to Marlin.  Played at Kyle Field.  Missed multiple XPs.

Could name a few others.  Pretty much every team in the 80s was in the quarterfinalis.

That 2010 game was the best HS game I ever watched in person so far. I'm only 60 so I still got time to see some more games but it is going to be hard to top that one.

Yes. That was a heck of a squad. Most likely would not have beaten La Marque that year but should have been there.

When I was a child the 1965 Texas High team.  Started the season with an upset of number 1 Galena Park and became number one in the state.  Went undefeated and remained number one until the playoffs began.  Defeated Dennison and Dallas Hillcrest before facing Odessa Permian in Ft. Worth at TCU.  Lost the game after falling behind and then rallying to just fall short.  Permian went on to crush San Antonio Lee the next week for the championship.  This was the first state championship for Permian.  Some of the players from both teams attended U of Texas and were major contributors to the 1969 National Championship team at Texas.  This was known as the best team Watty Myers ever coached.  Memories!
