The decision was reached after 15 months of consideration by the board of trustees, according to a letter co-signed by chairman Andre Porter and interim president Dave Kaufman.

As part of the name change, the school also will retire the mascot known as Cappy the Crusader, who depicts a warrior who fought in the Crusades, the series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims in medieval Europe.

“We believe that the University nickname and mascot should be a unifying symbol that enhances school spirit and pride for all who are affiliated with Capital,” the letter read. “In recent years, our nickname has been challenged by students and faculty for its connection to the historic Crusades. The detailed study found a significant portion of the Capital family shares this perspective.

Well I guess the following teams should change their names also.

Chiefs, Vikings, Cowboys, Raiders, Indians, Braves, Seminoles, Gators, Longhorns, Razorbacks etc.

Hell all of these could offend some precious person.

Bulldogs- offends owners of cow dogs.
Wildcats- offensive to owners of domesticated cats.
Sooners- offends people who are habitually late.
Trojans- offends those who use Gold Circle.
Chargers- offensive to those struggling with credit card debt.
Huskies- obviously offends people battling obesity.
Runnin’ Rebels- offensive to rebels who are paraplegic.

Let me get a few more beers in me and I’ll think of more.

Did you just gender judge a dog? Who’s to say that bulldog doesn’t identity as a steerdog or as a heiferdog?

Seminoles are actually ok.  Florida St pays the Seminole Nation for the use of its name.
