THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST

In the book of Colossians, Paul discusses the supremacy of Christ. Paul says that Christ has preeminence.

Colossians 1: 18

This means that the Messiah is in, what we would call, first place. He is superior and He is supreme. The emphasis of Christitanity is clearly placed on Christ our Savior.

Acts 11: 19 - 26

He is the single most important being in the universe. Today we are going to look at how He is the most important being in the universe.

First, His supremacy is shown by His redemptive power.

Colossians 1: 13 - 14

When we believe and obey Him, God delivers us from the power of darkness and translates us into the kingdom of Christ.

There are two spiritual kingdoms. There is the kingdom of God, and there is Satan’s kingdom.

Matthew 12: 26 - 28

Being in Christ and being citizens of His Kingdom brings us redemption and forgiveness of our sins by His blood. We must never forget that forgiveness can only come through the Blood of Christ.

Hebrews 9: 22

Next, His supremacy is shown in His Godhood.

Colossians 1: 15

The Messiah is the visible image of the invisible God. This means that He IS God. As the image of God, Christ is the perfect representation of God.

John 1: 1

John 1: 14

John 14:9

He is called firstborn. This states His rank among all things, not that He had a beginning. He is supreme over all, which shows He is Deity.

Next, His supremacy is shown in His creation.

Colossians 1: 16 - 17

All things in the universe were created through Him and for Him. He created the things we can see and the things we can not see. He was in existence before time. He has always existed in infinity along with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He upholds all things.

Hebrews 1: 3

All the laws of the universe, which He created, are sustained through Him.

Next, He is supreme in His church.

Colossians 1: 18

He is the head of the church, having all authority over it.

Matthew 28: 18

Luke 6: 46

Colossians 3: 17

He is the beginning of the church, it’s creator.

Matthew 16: 18

Acts 20: 28

He is ranked first among those raised from the dead. Several people in the Bible were raised from the dead, but they all died again. Christ is the first who rose and will not ever die again.

I Corinthians 15: 20 - 22

Finally, His supremacy is shown in His power of reconciliation.

Colossians 1: 19- 23

He brings us back into fellowship with God.  This is made possible through the Blood He freely gave on the cross. We were separated from God at the time of our first sin.

Isaiah 59: 1 - 2

The reconciliation between God and each of us is conditional. It is conditioned on us continuing in the faith of the Gospel. This goes along with what Paul preached on the first missionary journey.

Acts 13: 43

Acts 14: 21 -22

Paul has clearly established the supremacy of Christ over all of the universe. He is to be respected and obeyed. There is no hope outside of Him. He even is supreme in judgement.

II Corinthians 5: 10

Are you ready to face Him on that final day?
