Guess that depends on which source one chooses to believe.  The % I posted was in all the US, not just the south.  To look at the numbers you posted, the south must have been the wealthiest place in the world.  The average price of a slave in the 1850’s was $1000, plus the feeding, housing (such as it was).   Personally, I find it hard to believe that 32% could afford that kind of investment back then, which would have also required a home and land enough to warrant a slave.   But if you’re willing to believe anything on the Internet, go for it.

My ancestors were not wealthy by any means, & I don’t know much about my family beyond my Great Grandfather, but I Do know that my own grandfather, grandmother, my father & all of his siblings all used to go out to west Texas to pick cotton back in the early 1930’s & the years prior to World War ll, as did my mother’s side of the family, & They were poorer than my Dad’s side of the family; That’s Four generations of my family that never owned nor worked slaves going back to the post Civil War Era. To me, the rest is Ancient History.

Who did I diss?

Your initial post on this thread.   You grouped all conservatives together, twice.  I just hope you don’t teach that prejudice to your students.  Conservatives are like all other groups - different thoughts, likes & dislikes, and opinions.  One thing most have in common is, less government is better government, although there have been an occasional need for Govt to step in.   Problem is, they never “step out”.

You should study up on how the rich turned poor white poor bllacks against each other to stop them from gaining too much power. I don't know if you ever seen the movie The great debaters, but there is a scene when the sharecroppers and Marshall black and white are meeting to make their work environment better and they were rated by the police. I will admit one thing history don't tell you was about the poor blacks and whites working together until the elites created the divide.

Link the source

Just came up at top.  See pic below.   After you ask, saw one source that said $400.   Another $1500, so $1000 might be close.

Have trouble downloading picture.  Have ask site folks.  They can’t figure out why either.

I guess I did, didn't mean it to come across like that but guess I did.  I don't think it hit any of my conservative friends in here hard but it is what it is. Here's the secret and I said the multiple times here, I'm a conservative myself (unless it's racial issues) so I guess I'm prejudice against myself. Now that's a paradox.

By source I meant what journal or article did you view? What's the link to it?

There’s certainly a concerted effort to divide us (everyone, blacks/whites, liberals/conservatives, rich/poor).   Liberals blame Trump.  I blame the MSM, & whoever pulls their strings and the strings of our professional politicians.   Thing is, I wish I knew for sure who pulls those strings..

I realize that this was brought in to bring up the racism directed at Hank Aaron, but could it have been that they just didn't want him to surpass Babe Ruth ?  Athletes are given death threats all the time.  Even Tom Landry had a death threat made against him in the 4th quarter of the game against the Rams.  He finished the game wearing a bullet proof vest.  Andres Escobar was killed by someone from his own country after scoring a own goal for the U.S. that kept Columbia out of the World Cup.

It just popped up at the top of the page after I entered the question.   That picture - Bales said - to be honest, I haven’t a clue who Bales is.   Also, between BS info on the Internet, and folks writing revisionist history, it’s hard to pinpoint a fact.

Again, like the post to ctown, it just pops up when I put the question in.  Btw, it was 1.4%.   Question is, can I start getting paid for educating you guys?   😂

Is racism tilted more towards one side or is racism equal?

Based on percentages I would say it is equal.  I've seen racism even within a race for not being dark skinned enough or being too light skinned.  That is one of the dumbest things that I've heard, and it's been in every city, and town I have lived in.  We see it with the terms white trash, redneck, or hill billy.  I think you see racism more with people that are strangers, because once people get to know each other they usually find the good in one another regardless of race.  That's what I think is the main cause of racism.  People don't take the time to get to know one another especially today as neighbors.  Before 2000 I knew almost all of my neighbors in the areas I live.  Now, I hardly know any of them, and I have attempted to make contact with those that live around me.

WTH Dave...."It really made me see for the first time a clear picture of what this country is about. My kids had to live like they were in prison because of kidnap threats, and I had to live like a pig in a slaughter camp. I had to duck. I had to go out the back door of the ball parks. I had to have a police escort with me all the time. I was getting threatening letters every single day. All of these things have put a bad taste in my mouth, and it won’t go away. They carved a piece of my heart away." Henry Aaron

Once he broke the record it all stopped.  Hammerin' Hank became an American Icon.  I have not heard one bad word said about him since he broke the record.  I didn't hear anything bad about him growing up only about the death threats.  As I stated, athletes have death threat all the time.  Monica Seles was stabbed in the back by a fan of another tennis player, because she was the top ranked tennis player at the time.

I'm not going to assume so I'm going to ask how would you know? How many black  baby boomers and do you interact or speak with ?

I speak with several that are Gen X and many are Gen Z.  I don't hear them talk about the past during Jim Crow era or slavery.  Most Gen X such as myself who was born in 1968 never dealt with segregation.  I never saw a single blacks only sign in a public place, but have seen it on television and in print.  I never heard their parents discuss it while eating dinner or anywhere when I have been with my black friends.  I have heard more of my Hispanic friends talk about how hard it was for their parents to make ends meet in their own countries, and how much easier living in America has been for them.  Maybe their parents do talk to them about it, but they never talked to me about it.  I never asked either, what would be the point ?  We all have the blood of slaves and kings in our blood regardless of race, and we are all sons and daughters of God even if some are prodigal and don't want to follow Him.

1.4%? That's extremely off. When I said they were not as many slave owners as people think, I meant not everyone in the South owned slaves.

It was based on the census of 1860 which was actually 1.26 %, however that number was misleading because one it factored in the population of the entire United States, and not just the South.  I've read that it was around 15%, but I think the 20% of the families in the south owned 1 or more based on this study by Duke University.  https://socialequity.duke.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/8.10.20.pdf  .  Regardless, slaver hasn't existed since 1870, but was still somewhat practiced with share croppers and prison labor.  I think slavery should have been abolished as soon as this country was founded, but would it be a British problem or still an American problem ?  We will never know since our Founding Fathers made the decision to allow for slavery in the United States.

I believe the other source, and not yours since I looked it up.  Some middle class families owned only one or two slaves to do household duties, yard work, gardening, and keeping livestock.  By todays inflation you're looking at the cost of a new car or even a used car.  I'm inclined to think that slaves that lived in homes vs. a plantation were treated far better.  They were chattel to them, and they had to keep them in good health and in good terms in regards to how they were treated, because it would actually be easier from them to kill  you while  you were sleeping or to escape.  Plantations would be far worse because slaves were watched by foremen, overseers, taskmasters, slave drivers, overseers, etc...They didn't care how slaves were treated, because they wanted the tasks to be performed at a rate that would bring more money to the plantation even if at times it even meant the life of a slave.  We've all heard the term house blank, and they were loathed by the field hands because they lived a more comfortable lifestyle.  As I showed above they would live in closer proximity to the owner, and could poison or kill them more easily due to their close contact with them.

After reading some of these comments I wonder how much some of you paid in History class.  I know when I took American History that the Civil War was taught just as much as the Revolution, WW I, WW II, and the Vietnam War.  What's odd is the Korean War which President Trump almost help end officially is the longest stalemate of any war in the History of America, but was only briefly covered in History books.  I read and learned more about it, because I had Uncles that served in it.  Plus I liked watching M*A*S*H, and wanted to learn more about it since I'm a History buff.

It's mentioned in the Duke study that I provided.  It's from an old source that was made somewhere between 1960 and 1974.

I can remember when blacks were not allowed in at the Carthage City Swimming Pool; & I was there the first time they Were allowed entry... The whole pool emptied as these two young black men came walking into the swimming area & gingerly stepped into the water & began to swim. They had the whole pool to themselves for about five or ten minutes until myself and a couple other kids dove in and began to swim; we paid our money, & we were Certainly going to swim. Before too long, many other people came in and swam as well. I guess I must have been about 7 years old & I spent as much time swimming as I could back in those days...

I  would have never left the pool.  Allegedly white people smell like wet dogs when we get wet according to Chris Arnold formerly of KTCK and currently part of the Mavericks organization.  I've heard others say that as well.  I don't know why anyone gets bent out of shape about someone else's race, but some do.  It's a shame.

Actually, I didn’t leave the pool, the Lifeguard made me sit on the wall for five minutes for running; ( Big No-No!🙄) seems like I have been getting suspended or in “Time-Out” for the better part of my life...😜🙄

I remember having to sit out for stuff like that and splash fights.  I missed going to the pool this year they closed ours down.  They didn't even give us a break on our HOA fee's, but they saved money on not hiring any lifeguards for the summer.  I'm also sure they didn't have to do maintenance on the pool as much since there wasn't an p in the ool. I don't even know why they need lifeguards.  The deepest part of the pool is only 6 feet.  Why would anyone let their kid go to the pool that couldn't swim three feet to make it back to where they could stand in the pool anyway ?
