Stoney’s 2021 Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft

Recommended Posts

Year 2 of the McCarthy Era starts here. Dak has been signed. That pretty much sets up the offense. The defense severely underperformed last year. So my philosophy heading into this draft is to address the needs on defense while keeping an eye on some possible future needs.

1.10 targets- Penei Sewell OT Oregon, Kyle Pitts TE Florida, Patrick Surtain CB Alabama, Rashawn Slater OT Northwestern, Jaycee Horn CB South Carolina

Pick- Patrick Surtain CB Alabama

Surtain has the highest floor of any CB in this draft. He’ll be a walk in day 1 starter. The only way I’d consider passing on Surtain is if Sewell or Pitts was available at 10. The heir apparent to Tyron Smith would slide into LG until that time came. Pitts is a generational talent at TE who could take this offense to another level. Slater and Horn would be the targets if Sewell, Pitts, Surtain were gone. I’d consider a trade down at that point.

2.44 targets - Jevon Holland S Oregon, Richie Grant S UCF, Jayson Oweh DE Penn State, Jamin Davis LB Kentucky, Payton Turner DE Houston

Pick- Jevon Holland S Oregon

Will Dallas finally invest in a safety? In Dan Quinn’s scheme Holland would be a great fit. Can play single high and slot corner. I like Richie Grant better but I don’t see that being the pick. Jayson Oweh is a physical freak who needs work to turn those skills into results. Payton Turner is a bigger, more athletic edge/3T version of Tyrone Crawford. Jamin Davis is a do it all LB who could be the future at a position with LVE in final year of rookie contract.

3.75 targets-  Milton Williams DT LA Tech, Tommy Togiai DT Ohio State, Pete Werner LB Ohio State, Stone Forsythe OT Florida, Brevin Jordan TE Miami

Pick- Tommy Togiai DT Ohio State

Dallas could not stop the run last year. Tommy Togiai at 1T should help fix that problem. A stout run stopper should take pressure off the LBs. Milton Williams is another freak 3T/edge who could play inside or out. Pete Werner is a concerted safety who is a good coverage LB who isn’t a liability in the run game. Stone Forsythe would give Dallas an upgrade at backup OT who could be Tyron’s replacement. Brevin Jordan is a master of none type TE.

3.99 targets- Stone Forsythe OT Florida, Pete Werner LB Ohio State, Alim McNeill DT NC State, Kellen Mond QB Texas A&M, Cameron Sample DE Tulane

Pick- Pete Werner LB Ohio State

Dallas has a LB issue. Jaylon and LVE have regressed. Pete Werner is a modern day LB who can cover RB, TE and some WRs in slot. Forsythe would be a fit here. Alim McNeill is a 3T/1T who could push 2nd rounders Trysten Hill and Neville Gallimore for playing time. Kellen Mond is the best QB left on the board. QB2 is up for grabs. Mond would be a interesting developmental pick. Cameron Sample would give Dallas a 3rd edge since the loss of Aldon Smith.

4.115 targets- Alim McNeill NC State, Ar’darius Washinton S TCU, D’Ante Smith OT East Carolina, Shaun Wade CB/S Ohio State, Kyle Trask QB Florida

pick- D’Ante Smith OT ECU

Dallas needs an upgrade at OT. We got a glimpse of the future without Tyron Smith last year. D’Ante Smith is a long, quick footed LT starter kit. Let him develop with Tyron. Alim McNeill would give Dallas juice on the interior. Ar’darius Washington is small but a playmaker. Dallas could use those. Shaun Wade had a bad season as an outside CB, much better as a slot, could be a single high safety. Kyle Trask is another potential developmental QB project.

4.138 targets- Shaun Wade CB/S Ohio State, Chauncey Gholston DE Iowa, Jaelon Darden WR UNT, Anthony Schwartz WR Auburn, Kylin Hill Miss State

pick- Shaun Wade CB/S Ohio State

This is a risk pick. Wade as a slot CB is pretty good. As an outside CB not so much. Luckily, Dallas will be playing him at slot. With the potential to play some safety. Chauncey Gholston is a typical Iowa DE. Not a freak athlete but technically proficient. Might not be a starter but could give you 10 years of solid play. Jaelon Darden and Anthony Schwartz are speedy slot WRs who can play some X & Z. Kylin Hill could be the power to Pollard’s speed if Zeke goes down again.

5.179 targets- Shi Smith WR South Carolina, Brendon Jaimes OT/OG Nebraska, Simi Fehoko WR Stanford, Jaelon Darden WR UNT, Anthony Schwartz WR Auburn

pick- Jaelon Darden WR UNT

With Michae Gallup going into the final year of his rookie deal, Dallas could draft the local prospect to learn behind one of the best WR corps in the NFL. Worked pretty well for a SMU kid. Brendon Jaimes can play almost anywhere on the line. Shi Smith and Anthony Schwartz are speed slots. Simi Fehoko is a tall, fast outside threat at WR.

6.192 targets- Simi Fehoko WR Stanford, Deommodore Lenoir CB Oregon, Patrick Johnson DE Tulane, Avery Williams ST Boise State, Tay Gowan CB UCF

pick- Avery Williams ST Boise State

With the hiring of “Bones” Fassel as ST coach there has been a willingness to invest in the special teams. Avery Williams is a special teams playmaker. Explosive on returns. Blocks kicks. Kid would make an impact here. Simi Fehoko is a tall WR with great speed. Deommodore Lenior is a shorter armed, CB depth prospect. Patrick Johnson is more hustle than traits pass rusher. Tay Gowan is a rapper who could be a late round steal at CB if he wants to be.

6.227 targets- Sam Ehlinger QB Texas, Cam Bynum CB Cal, Alaric Jackson OT Iowa, Jacob Harris ATH UCF, Nick Niemann LB Iowa

pick- Nick Niemann LB Iowa

Dallas had turnover at LB this offseason. Niemann tests well, hustle LB who could be a ST starter who could grow into role player, possible starter. Sam Ehlinger would be a developmental QB target here who’s ceiling may be nothing more than a QB2. Cam Bynum is a tall, shorter armed developmental CB prospect. Jacob Harris is a tall (6-5), fast (4.40 40) late bloomer athlete.

7.238 targets- Sam Ehlinger QB Texas, Jaret Patterson RB Buffalo, Ben Mason FB/TE Michigan, Quinton Bohanna DT Kentucky, William Bradley-King DE Baylor

pick- Ben Mason FB/TE Michigan

Dalton Schultz is in last year of his rookie contract. Dallas cut Jamize Olawale. Ben Mason could fill a small role on this team as FB/TE3. Sam Ehlinger could be the pick here. Jaret Patterson is a undersized RB who could be used as a gadget player. Quinton Bohanna is 6-4 327lbs of pure 1T. William Bradley-King is a long edge rusher project.

I'm hearing the Falcons might trade Julio Jones and take Ja'Marr Chase, but the Bengals are also interested in Chase since he was a go to guy for Joe Burrow.

I agree that the Bengals need an O-line to protect Burrow.

One of the Bengals writers was willing to put his money on Jamar Chase at 5 to Cincinnati. It wouldn’t shock me but Burrow coming off that ACL injury won’t survive behind that o-line.

The Falcons at 4 is when the draft starts. The 49ers seem to be down to Trey Lance or Mac Jones. If a team is high on Justin Fields (New England, Redskins, Chicago) Atlanta could get a ton of picks. The Julio Jones contract is a mess. No matter what Atlanta does with him (play him, cut him, trade him) they are on the hook for $23m this year. That’s QB money.

Dallas will have a interesting day 1 draft. Sewell > Pitts > Surtain > Slater > Horn. That’s the best 5 guys for Dallas at 10. Dallas needs to keep an eye on Carolina at 8 and possibly Arizona at 16. Carolina has a ton of needs. Any one of those 5 could be the pick. If Surtain goes before 10, don’t be surprised if Dallas takes Pitts or Sewell/Slater at 10. Dallas would take best player available and could come back at 2.44 to take a cornerback. Arizona is in win now mode. They lost Patrick Peterson. They need a CB. Watch them as a possible trade up to 9 to Denver to get their choice of Surtain/Horn. A QB falling to 10 (Mac Jones, Trey Lance, Justin Fields) could have Dallas trading back. Not likely to happen. Just something to watch for.

Dallas could have two potential trade options in the 1st round. 1A)If 3 of the top guys (Sewell, Pitts, Surtain, Slater, Horn) are there at 10, especially Sewell/ Slater & the corners, watch for a trade with San Diego at 13. The Chargers could come up to 10 for one of the best tackles. Dallas would fall to 13 and pick up possibly 3.77, still winding up with one of Surtain/Horn. 1B) Watch for a possible trade back into the 1st round for TCU safety Trevon Moehrig. The best safety in the class. If Dallas took Surtain/Horn at 10 and managed to get Moehrig too, that is a home run makeover of the secondary. Would cost 2.44 and 3.75, maybe 3.99 to pull that off. With 10 picks, Dallas needs quality picks not quantity.

Jerruh will trade down to get more bums in the later rounds ... his draft philosophy is he's going to play as many bums as possible to try and wear down your blue chip studs he passed on trading down .... Jerruh gonna flood the zone with bums ... tru storie ....

Would you be upset if Dallas took Kyle Pitts or Penei Sewell/Rashawn Slater over a cornerback at 10? Cause I have Pitts/Sewell over Surtain/Horn. Best player available within position of need.

I wouldn't be upset at anything Jerruh does.  I have resigned myself to the fact that he is incapable of building a team capable of winning another Superbowl .... He doesn't have the football instincts to make the right moves required to accomplish it ... Betting the farm on Prescott will set him back another 5-7 years ... just hang on for a bumpy ride ..... the defense has a lot of needs and probably is where they should focus on first ... I like Sultan over the two you mentioned .... the offense also needs a game breaker out of the backfield or slot ... Elliott can't carry the load by himself ....

The closer it gets to draft night the more it seems like Jamar Chase will be the pick at 5 to Cincinnati. Bengals think they have enough invested at tackle. Still might target guard help on day 2. With AJ Green gone, Chase would give Burrow a WR1. Heck it might make @MavGrad99 a fan of the Cincinnati Swamp Kitties.

I, honestly, have not hated a single NFL team besides the cheating Patriots for about 10 years.  However, I do like what Cincinnati is building.

If Cincy can keep Burrow upright, give him some weapons to throw to, put something that resembles a defense on the field, Cincy could be fun to watch.

I could live with those picks, but we don't need another WR.  If the Cowboys have no intention of resigning Gallup then they need to trade him.  I think he's worth at least a #1.

You will never get a #1 for Gallup--receivers really don't bring in a #1 pick very often. Considering he is a #2 or #3 receiver in Dallas at best--Maybe get a 2 & 6 pick for him, but expect maybe a #3 and #6 pick.

If he were still available, I think the best pick the Cowboys could make would be Penei Sewell--the Cowboys are always at their best when they have a great offensive line. And while Dak maybe back, those in front of him still need to play much better or he will be on a stretcher again. Anytime you can add such a good prospect to the offensive line--you do it.

Much rather have Sewell then Surtain. Upgrade at LG over Connor Williams. Tyron Smith’s replacement.

He's had two solid years so far, and a not so bad rookie season.  His numbers were down last year because of CeeDee Lamb added to the receiving corps, and Dalton coming in.  Maybe receivers aren't traded for a #1 draft pick if you're the Texans, but I would bet many teams would trade a #1 for him.  Stefon Diggs had similar stats before being traded to Buffalo for a 1st and a few other picks.  Brandin Cooks was traded twice for 1st round picks.  Percy Harvin.  I'd like to see the Cowboys get a 1st rounder for a change with them trading three times for a receiver Joey Galloway (2 1st rounders), Roy Williams, and Amari Cooper.  If you can't get a first, just keep him.

It’s like closing time at the bar. Do you want to pick and choose, or do you want to have to outbid the room?
