APRIL 24, 1905

At the Baker Bowl in Philadephia, Giants manager John McGraw lets Christy Mathewson hit with two on in the 9th, and the ace promptly singles in two runs to give the Giants a 5-4 lead. Matty then pitches a scoreless bottom of the 9th for the win over Bill Duggleby.


APRIL 24, 1911

National League President Thomas Lynch orders his umpires to stop catchers (partictularly the Cardinals' Roger Bresnahan) from verbally attacking batters.


APRIL 24, 1923

President Warren G. Harding attends the game at Yankee Stadium and sees Babe Ruth hit a home run in a 4-0 win over the Senators -- the first shutout in the new stadium.


APRIL 24, 1951

SMU All-American football star Kyle Rote makes his professional Baseball debut with the Corpus Christi Aces of the Class B Gulf Coast League. Rote's pro Baseball career will end on May 23th, as he reports to the New York Football Giants training camp. Rote finishes the '51 campaign with 23 hits in 22, including seven home runs -- while hitting at a .348 clip.


APRIL 24, 1954

The White Sox spoil Vern Bickford's American League debut -- chasing him after four innings and winning 14-4. The Orioles use three relievers including former Negro Leaguer Jehosie "Jay" Heard, making his ML debut. Heard is the first African-American player for the Orioles. He'll make just one other appearance in his MLB career.


APRIL 24, 1956

American League umpire Frank Umont becomes the first to wear glasses in a regular season game. The former New York football Giants (NFL) tackle still presents an intimidating appearance to most players and fans.


APRIL 24, 1982

Vero Beach Dodgers lefty Sid Fernandez no-hits the Winter Haven Red Sox in a Florida State League (Class A) contest, 5-0.

Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, Frank Chance (of the Double Play trio), Jess Burkett, Tom McCarthy, Rube Waddell, Eddie Plank, Big Ed Walsh, Jack Chesbro, Clark Griffith and Joe McGinnity are all enshrined in Cooperstown !!

April 24, 1991

Houston Astros rookie pitcher Darryl Kile hurls six hitless innings against Cincinnati in his 1st Major League start. Manager Art Howe removes him with the no-hitter intact rather than risk an injury to his arm. The Reds finally manage a single off Curt Schilling in the 9th as Houston wins, 1-0.
