Westwood struggles in dual scrimmages

Westwood head coach Shane Jones had his defense set. Or so he thought.

After Friday night’s dual scrimmage against Corrigan-Camden and Alto, Jones said there may be some changes upcoming.

“We had some bright spots, but there are also some spots that need to be worked on,” Jones said. “There will be a few position changes, because some players didn’t play well in certain situations. We’re going to find 11 people that can play defense.”

After fairing well in the 15-play portion of the scrimmage against Corrigan-Camden, Westwood’s defensive struggle began.

In 15 plays against Alto, the defense gave up three touchdowns

Against Corrigan-Camden in the 25-minute half, Westwood’s defense held the Bulldogs to just 89 yards, while the Westwood offense gained 151 yards.

Gralyn Crawford rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns on runs of 35 and 70 yards.

In the half against Alto, the Panthers' struggled to move the ball on offense, while the defense had trouble stopping the Yellowjackets'

Westwood struggled to come up with a first down and had three rushes for minus-24 yards, including a 20-yard loss on a safety

The defense gave up 120 yards and two touchdowns

“Our biggest challenge is going to be tackling,” Jones said about his defense. “When you play another team, you cannot be afraid to tackle.”

Some of the bright spots for Westwood came in the 15-play section against Corrigan-Camden.

Running back George Carter scored on a 60-yard run, followed by Crawford with a 5-yard run.

Another bright spot for Westwood was the exposure to two different types of offenses in one scrimmage.

Corrigan-Camden ran a power-running game, which Jones expects to see when Westwood plays Brownsboro in the regular season.

Alto, which has more of a spread offense, is like many of the teams in District 19-3A.

I was told by a Coach that Westwood used all 36 players. Said they still needed to evaluate some players to see if they could contribute at all. I guess that is find in a scrimmage but it gets for real this Friday. They better be ready for Bullard from what I saw of Thursday against Rusk. Well at least all the Scrimmages are done , now it is you win or lose. ( Scrimmage is just a practice ) now the Score will tell the Story. Good Luck to all teams.
