GoCatsGo
There's 2 minutes left in the game. You lead by a score of 10-7. Your opponent stops you on your on 25 yard line. The ball sails over the punters head. He picks it up on the 5 yard line. Should he still try to kick the ball or take a safety?
geauxtiger3
if he got hit with the ball on the 5 wouldn't he have forward progress? or are you saying should he run back into the end zone and fall down?
GoCatsGo
On 4th down when the ball was centered to the punter it sails over his head and he scrambled and picked it up. He could have tried to punt the ball or he could have stepped into the endzone and taken a knee for the safety. Which should he have done. This actually happened in a game back in 200o. His decision won the game for Corsicana.

geauxtiger3
I would take the knee in the end zone.. you could get a much better kick on the free kick than a scrambling punt.. plus a safety gets you two points so you would still have the lead 10-9.. blackflag_74
personally, i would take the safety. the last thing you need is to have a punt blocked into the endzone for a touchdown, or to have the punt returned for a touchdown. if you have held the other team to only 7 points, put the trust into your defense. its better to giveup 2 points instead of 7. DonaldDuck
He should try to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone instead of diving on a fumble and potentially losing the ball in a pile.
WildLeg
The defensive rush, plus the ability of the punter, keep this one from having just one correct answer. Take the safety, in most cases.

Homerun
What is the difference in a 10-7 game and a 33-30 game? If you take the safety you are still ahead and a FG beats you. You take the safety and try to get good field position. If you don't there is a chance of a fumble recovery and touchdown or if you fall on it they have great field position for a win. Make the team work on offense to get the FG.
Word
well maybe if it is 33-30 is hows they can move the ball where as if it is 10-7 they must not have a great offense or you have a solid defense......take the safety
Dawgman
I agree with word, I take the safety and out it into my defense's hands.

This is the last thing that you would want your kicker to do. This is an illegal kick and a 15-yard penalty plus a loss of down from the spot of the illegal kick. So you would be giving the opponents the ball at the 2 1/2-yard line.
flukeshot
Most high school punters are lucky to get off a decent kick when everything goes just right. A kick on the run twenty yards behind the line of scrimmage is a disaster and I'd give everything a very low probability of success. On the bright side, I guess, if you can get it off without it getting blocked, it's probably not going to be returned, maybe you'll get a bounce or something.
