Texas City's Whitney Prevost defeated his best friend and defending 4A state champ D.J. Monroe of Angleton in the 100 meters Friday night at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Prevost ran a 10.45 to beat Little Elm's Trevante Rhodes and Texas Tech WR signee Rashad Hawk of Copperas Cover for third (10.65).

Angleton's junior DB Monroe, a heralded Texas football commitment for '08, was seventh at 10.97.

Baylor football RB/DB signee V.J. McElroy of Uvalde was sixth at 10.9.

Prevost played football at Texas City but signed at track scholarship with Baylor, which envisions as the next in the school's long line of 400 runners that include Olympic gold medalists Michael Johnson and Jeremy Wariner.

 

Prevost also won the 200 and long jump.

 

 

Saturday's 5A 100

Speedy football stars Cyrus Gray of DeSoto, Lufkin's Ralph Thomas, Arlington Martin's Clifton Odom and San Antonio Reagan's Marcus Wright highlight the field for the Class 5A 100 on Saturday.

 

They'll be in the 8-man field with San Antonio sophomore Rynell Parson, who's ran a hand-timed 9.9 early in the season and had a 10.72 qualifying time.

 

Lufkin Thomas' resolved a conflict of playing baseball this week and running Lufkin played Georgetown Thursday and Friday. Thomas signed with Oklahoma State this week to play football and baseball.

 

Thomas, a star defensive back at Lufkin, likely will be drafted by professional baseball in June.

 

Gray is one of the nation's top uncommitted junior running backs. Odom signed with Baylor as a linebacker and Wright is an '08 commit to Tulsa.
