Solid Programs

What does it take to build a solid fb program. What all is involved? You see teams like Celina that are good EVERY year. When GA moved on they didn't miss a beat. They play at the 3A level as good as 2A. How does a program like that just keep on truckin while bad ones stay bad? Where do you start?

I firmly believe that to be that good for a long period of time, it's starts at the dinner table. They have parents that push their kids to work they way they do and be successfull. They also support the Coaching Staff. Which, believe it or not, is huge.

You do need school board support, because once you start winning it gets contagious. Take Celina for example and their tradition along with other schools, the ones coming up want to outdo the ones before them. If you get that kind of determination from kids and if your pee wee football teams runs the base stuff of the varsity in their town (Celina) then all the base plays become second nature. "You build knowledge through repetition." Good luck to all teams next year in football as it is going to be crazy with teams coming out of no where. It all starts with attitude and keeping a coach more than 2 or 3 years.

Pizz is right. It has nothing to do with a formula for success. If you got the right kids at the right place with the right attitude and the right support then you will have a solid program. Every coach has a dream of turning things around every place they coach, but in some places you just have to separate your dreams from actual reality.

You are correct: My daughter plays basketball with a girl from Celina and her brother will be a freshman next year. I asked his dad why Celina was so good year in and year out. He told me that every boy at that school does not want to be the one who lets the program down or lose a game. This kid is also unbelievable. He is 6'2" weighs 230 lbs. and runs a sub 5 second 40. His dad said that his 8th grade class was unbelievable and that they should continue the tradition at Celina. p.s. he can also crush a baseball.

Why is it that every team that wins is accused of recruiting? If you have a winning program people want to be a part of that. If you were the coach and some stud running back wanted to come to your school would you say NO, because you don't want it to look like recruiting. Be honest guys, every coach in the state is hoping to get some new players for next season.

Its all about the Jimmys and Joes that are in your school district. You can have the greatest coaches in Texas all together, but they could not turn a program around that has been 0-10 for several years if they do not have talent around them.

The Celina's and SLC's of the world just outwork people. They are a bunch of overacheivers.

Celina will never have the talent of a Tatum or Gilmer, but they are competitive because all the kids work hard and push one another. Success breeds success. It will take a few years if you are starting from scratch- good coaches and good kids who work hard can beat teams with better talent year in and year out. Just look at Celina. Their best player last year was their 5'6" 165 lb defensive end who was a sophmore.

Very good point. Whitehouse is trying to head in that direction. Whitehouse will never have the athletes of a Marshall or Texas High, but they do have the type of kids that work like crazy. They were also starting from scratch just two years ago.

Third year, they are the defending 12AAAA Disrtict Champs and wanting to repeat. It will take several years to develop a true "TRADITION" to be upheld by the next class, but they are are well on their way. They say that this years seniors are wanting to have "better" results than last years class.

Not to say that the kids at Whitehouse have not worked their butts off to improve that way, but that QB they have doesn't hurt either. Like someone else said, you gotta have the Jimmy's and the Joe's for hard work to turn into real success.
