The head boys basketball coaching vacancy at Athens High

School was one of much interest. More than 85 applicants

sought the job.

But in the end, after a exhaustive search that carried him far

and wide, Athens ISD athletic director Dan Hamrick made a

call close to home with the selection of Kemp High School

head boys basketball coach Tracy Carter. Carter’s hiring

was made official with approval at Thursday night’s AISD

board meeting.

“We’re very excited to get someone of Tracy’s caliber,”

Hamrick said. “He’s a proven winner.

“The thing I’m excited most about getting him is he’s been

there and done it ... taken a program from scratch at made

it successful.”

Carter recently completed his fourth year at Kemp. Prior to

his arrival, the Yellowjacket basketball program that had

won a total of five game the previous three seasons. In his

tenure, the Yellowjackets went 79-49 and made the

playoffs four times.

In his first season at Kemp, Carter led the Yellowjackets to

their first playoff appearance in 40 years. The next year,

Kemp went unbeaten in district and captured the first

playoff win in school history.

Kemp claimed another district title this past season and

made even more school history, advancing to the Region

II-AAA semifinals.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Carter said. “I am

ready for a coaching change in my career and am looking

forward to being a part of a successful athletic program at

Athens High School.”

Prior to his arrive at Kemp, Carter spent one year as the

associate head boys basketball coach at Nacogdoches

High School, helping lead the Dragons to the school’s first

district title in 28. Nacogdoches went on to reach the

regional quarterfinals.

In 1996, Carter was an assistant coach at Euless Trinity

High School, where he spent six seasons. The Trojans

advanced to the Class 5A state championship game that

season, falling to Dallas Kimball.

“Tracy is the complete package,” Hamrick said. “We’re not

only getting an outstanding coach, but also an outstanding

teacher.”

Carter, a graduate of Oklahoma State University, was

recently named Kemp High School Teacher of the Year. He

is certified to teach biology and physical education on all

levels.

In addition to coaching at Kemp, Nacogdoches and Euless

Trinity, Carter has made coaching stops over the high

school and junior high levels in the McKinney and

Lewisville ISDs.

He is a member of the Texas Association of Basketball

Coaches and Texas High School Coaches Association.

Carter and wife Evelyn, also employed by Kemp ISD, are

proud parents of three-year-old daughter Lauren and infant

son Luke.

"I have heard nothing but great things about the community

and I am very impressed with the staff and administrators

at Athens,” Carter said. “They seem to be great people to

work with.”

“I can’t wait to meet the kids and get started.”

Hey CowboyUp,

were you not watching this district this past season? I'm just assuming you forget about the Chapel Hill squad that walked all over those 3 teams you listed...infact I think they might have been a little bored with the competetion. Must have been an over sight.

Also, who plays volleyball anyway? I hate that sport.....

In all seriousness tho i don t think Athens will win immediately with Carter holding the reins especially with the loss of their best player...but i think in the long run this will definitely be a good fit for the Athens Hornets and they will ultimately reach the playoffs within i m sayin the next 3 years...:dancingbanana:

Be objective next year Hornet fans. Success is not always measured by the number of wins. Athens is supremely better for having Coach Carter coming to town. His love for kids and his drive for success will translate into success for the Hornets. Good Luck coach!!
