All-time Greatest East Texas High School Football Team

Smoaky

Recommended Posts

I've wanted to do this for quite some time, but for some reason...I'm ready to do it now.

I'm taking nominations for "Greatest High School Football Team Ever" from the greater-East Texas area (schools covered in Smoaky.com).

Here's the process.

Please do everything possible to keep all posts on this thread to nominations---NO DISCUSSION, no arguing, no negativity, no trash-talking.

Let's have a lot of fun with this...and in the long run, let the membership make the call as "GREATEST TEAM EVER".

I will accept nominations for the "Greatest High School Football Team Ever" from now through Wednesday, August 15th...which is the same deadline for our pre-season polls nominations.

Each member is allowed to nominate as many "Greatest Teams Ever" as you want---BUT---you must be specific with describing the team, what specific year, win-loss record, points for and/or against, stud players, and I mean the one's who made a difference during that one season, who was the head coach, who did they beat for the state championship, or what big moments or games made that season special.

EACH nominated team MUST HAVE WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

I know '84 Daingerfield or others would beat some championship teams, but we have to make this clear...you had to have won a state championship to be in this tournament.

PLEASE understand---I will then form a tournament bracket in which we'll vote as a membership from one week to the next.

DO NOT put up a team that isn't deserving of playing against some of the greatest teams ever, from Class 1-A through Class 5-A.

DO NOT put up a "period" of years for any team nominated...it's for ONE SEASON.

Not all nominations are guaranteed to make this tournament...but I'll do everything possible to include everyone.

Thank you.

1973 John Tyler Lions. Earl Campbell, Ronnie Lee & co. 15-0 record w/ an average score of 35-6.

1994 John Tyler Lions. CUJO has arrived. Undefeated state champs soring 35 pts per game. One of Allen Wilson's many great teams.

2001 Lufkin Panthers. Reggie McNeal leads the pack to a state championship while becoming a local legend. Coming from 3 td's down in the Championship game vs Austin Westlake to win 38-24. He had 150+ rushing and 220+ passing.

1990 Goveton Indians. Complete small school domination. 2nd consecutive year as undefeated state champs. Rodney Thomas w/3000 yds rushing. Gerald Farley at QB. Charles Cockrell (all-state on both sides of the ball).

1983 Daingerfield Tigers. You know the story! 631 scored, 8 allowed. Greatest playoff run ever (0 points allowed).

1975 Big Sandy Wildcats. By now you know the names. But the stats. 824 points scored and 15 allowed in 14 games. That would be SPANKING someone 59-0 every Friday Night.

1980 Pittsburg Pirates right there with 1983 Daingerfield team.

1999 Liberty-Eylau 14-1, lost early but finished strong 22 of 38 on roster played college football, 7 were DI players, Brandon Jones 3A player of the year, now with Titans. Keith McFadden rushed for more than 2,000 yards. Jones 50 catches for more than 1,000 yards and 15 TDs. Jamie Green and LaMarcus Franklin alternated at qb and both signed DI scholarships. Defense was huge and super quick. Beat Mathis in state championship game, 49-6. They led 35-0 at half and played everyone in the second half. Ask the coaches, they'll tell you how talented this team was.

Since the question is "All-time Greatest East Texas High School Football Team", singular not plural, I'm going to have to go with the 1973 JT Lions and Earl Campbell.

While there have been numerous outstanding ET football teams over the years (and I have no quarrel with any of the teams mentioned!) I think that the JT team deserves the title. Primarily because Earl Campbell was the most dominating HS player I have ever had the honor to watch. His presence gives the '73 team that little edge to make them (in my opinion) the absolute best of all time.

I have made an executive decision to have one or two "at-large" non state championship teams in the tournament.

BUT---the non state championship teams had to have played into the quarterfinals.

    Examples could be...

    1997 Longview

    1975 Longview

    1984 Daingerfield

    Etc..etc...etc.

Be sure to have the correct information.

    Thank you.

1986 Jefferson Bulldogs..Beat Daingerfield 14-7 in the play-offs, beat Cuero and Robert Strait for the Title..Had the amazing Smith Brothers

1990 Marshall Mavericks..Beat Plano, Cypress, Creek, Arlington Sam Houston and Judson in the play-offs..all top 10 teams

My wildcard...1988 Marshall Mavericks..quite possibly the best team not to win State...Beat top ten teams like Permian, Lufkin, Garland Lakview..Beat Huntsville when it had at the time one of the best HS QBS in Steve Clements..Lost in a CLASSIC of a play-off game to Dallas Carter

    Smoaky,

It should be noted back in the 1970s only one team from each district advanced to the playoffs. The 1974 Texas High team lost to eventual state champion John Tyler and Earl Campbell on a halfback pass in the final seconds. That same Texas High team lost to the Arkansas state champions and Graylon Wyatt, Campbell's runningmate at Texas. That Texas High team was pretty incredible. If you check back that district had four teams (John Tyler, Texas High, Lufkin and Longview) ranked in the AP top 10 at the same time. Can't remember that ever happening before. That 1974 John Tyler team was awesome, but lucky to even reach the playoffs.

In 1937 Longview is listed as being The Champions with a win over W Falls.

In 1937 Tatum beat Longview 6 to 0. The great Ray Norris, Curtis Metcalf, and C.F. Kuykendall played on this team. Curtis went on to become an Ace pilot in WW11 and CF was selected to play in the first all star bowl in W Falls.

In 1937 Tatum beat Henderson 38 to 6 and Carthage 19 to 6.

I have officiated football for 27 years, worked 1 of the games Smoaky mentions and worked games for almost all the teams mentioned. I have to say the most dominating team I have ever seen play was the '83 Daingerfield team with the JT '94 team a close second.

that 83 team could just run a whole new set of players out on the field and they were almost as good as the starters and better than the other team's starters.

    Smoaky,

If the 84 Daingerfield team is to be listed - the 84 Gladewater Bears must also be mentioned! They were, by far, the bets team that Daingerfield played that year (and almost - should have) beat them that night in Tyler.

Based mostly on teams that I have actually see play or ones I have seen film/video on the 2002 Texas High team would be hard to beat. They were better than the Marshall state championship team, all the Daingerfield teams, the Pittsburg team, the Liberty-Eylau teams, the Kilgore state championship team, the Paris championship team and of course all the teams in smaller classes. I would of like to of seen them play the Earl Campbell J.T. team. The winner of this "contest" would be from Texas High, John Tyler or Lufkin.

I think if it were a tournament like ESPN does for super bowl winners the finals would be 2002 Texas High vs. 2001 Lufkin

1988 Marshall Mavericks. Maybe the only undefeated non state champion in history.

I am biased because I played on this team, but my vote would have to go to the 1988 Mavs. We were robbed by Dallas Carter and the UIL, who after the fact made them forfeit the game for cheating. That made us undefeated but not the state champs. And yes, most of us will be at least a little bit bitter about that until the day we die. That team certainly was better than the one that won the title a couple of years later.

    Stud Players:

Odell Beckham (read Friday Night Lights for backup) - LSU

    Stanley Thomas - LSU

Alfred Jackson - Arkansas (All State on offense and defense)

    Benny Valentine - Tulane

    Record 13-0-0

I will be happy to give stats later.
