dmcnabb
INDIANAPOLIS — The Oklahoma football team will vacate all of its wins from the 2005 season as punishment for major violations, the NCAA Committee on Infractions announced today. The violations stem from pay received by three players — including dismissed quarterback Rhett Bomar and lineman J.D. Quinn — from Big Red Sports and Imports for work they hadn't done. The pay totaled approximately $17,000. The committee found that OU failed to monitor the employment of their football players. Aside from the vacated wins, OU's penalties. • Two additional years of probation, extended the period through 2010. • The loss of two scholarships through the 2009-10 season. • A reduction by one of the number of coaches who can recruit off campus. • A public reprimand and censure. • A disassociation with the dealership manager for five years. The committee found OU "made several mistakes in a narrow, but significant area — the employment of football student-athletes at the dealership, which resulted in a breakdown of its monitoring. When such mistakes result in significant violations of NCAA legislation, as in this case, a finding of failure to monitor is appropriate and justified.” The NCAA said the case was significant and serious for several reasons, including because of the Sooners' trip before the committee a year earlier because of its failure to monitor the men's basketball team's contact with recruits. bordertown
Per the NCAA OU "vacated" their '05 wins versus forfeiting the games. Theirrecord for '05 was 0-4 and any mention of Bomar is expunged from the '05 records.
bigdawg16
Is this really a big penalty? Or is it about on par? I have not really followed the NCAA when it comes to dealing with violations.
dmcnabb
ncaa is saying '05 it's as if '05 season never happened .. by vacate wins, it's unclear if the loses stand and record is 0-4... but the 8 wins aren't losses per se

orangepower
O ya how dare the NCAA do anything harsh at all to a team with the caliber of OU. They bring in way too much money to punish too hard. You know if a team like Arkansas State did the exact same thing the NCAA would destroy them. It will be interesting to see how hard USC gets hit now
TJC_fan
NCAA: Oklahoma must vacate 2005 season; Sooners to appeal Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma must erase its wins from the 2005 season .............. the NCAA said Wednesday. Oklahoma President David Boren said the university will appeal the NCAA's "failure to monitor" finding and the ruling that Oklahoma must erase the wins from the 2005 season. Oklahoma has 15 days to notify the NCAA in writing of any such appeal. The Sooners went 8-4 and beat Oregon in the Holiday Bowl to end the 2005 season. Records from that season involving quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn must be erased, the NCAA said, and coach Bob Stoops' career record will be amended to reflect the erased wins, dropping it from 86-19 in eight seasons to 78-19. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If Bomar and Quinn contributed to 8 wins, which were "erased" from OU's record, then why wouldn't the 4 losses also be erased? After all, I'm willing to bet that both Bomar and Quinn also contributed to those losses. I wonder if OU drops any in the "all time win" category? GabeHorns
They're going to appeal saying that they do have an eye out on athletes, but they knew what was going on. I say just take it and not make the university look bad, as this situation isn't helpng.
