JUNE 1, 2001

At Pete Goldsby Field in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Tyler Roughnecks lose their inaugural game to the Baton Rouge Blue Marlins, 7-5. Nolan Lane, Larry Bethea & Ramon Ruiz all homer for the Roughnecks, but Blue Marlins left fielder Mike Perini's two-out, two-run, home run in the bottom of the seventh breaks a 5-5 tie & is the eventual game-winner... BOX SCORE

JUNE 1, 1970
In a private meeting, Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn reprimands Houston Astros RHP Jim Bouton for writing his controversial book Ball Four. The scolding helps put the book on the bestseller list and makes it a classic.

Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) would have really thought Bouton to be a strange character.

 

In his 10 years in the show he won 62 games and he won 39 of those games in 2 seasons. In 1963 he won 21 and in the following year he won 18.

 

Ball Four made him a cult hero to some degree.

JUNE 1, 1975
The Angels' Nolan Ryan pitches his 4th career no-hitter‚ winning 1-0 over the Orioles‚ to tie the record set by Sandy Koufax. Ryan strikes out 9‚ including Bobby Grich on a change-up for the last out‚ and runs his record to 9-3. Ryan has now struck out 96 in 96 innings. Today's win is the 100th of Ryan's career.

 

JUNE 1, 1976
The Twins trade RHP Bert Blyleven and SS Danny Thompson to the Rangers for RHP Bill Singer‚ SS Roy Smalley‚ 3B Mike Cubbage‚ and $250‚000. Thompson will die of leukemia on December 10.

 

JUNE 1, 1980
The Cleveland Indians tie a ML record with 4 sacrifice flies (Ron Hassey‚ Dave Rosello‚ Gary Alexander‚ and Dell Alston) in an 8-7 loss to the Mariners. Seattle adds one more‚ tying the 2-team single-game record of 5
