SptsEd
Another milestone for "The Dean" Tigers give Nickerson 400th career win with 66-39 rout of Sunnyvale By Benny Rogers Athens Daily Review BLOOMING GROVE — His gold coat came off a few seconds before tipoff. The constant pacing in front of the bench, clapping and chattering soon followed. Just over an hour-and-a-half later, DeArtis Nickerson Jr. was standing at midcourt being presented the game ball in commemoration of his 400th career victory — a 66-39 blowout of Sunnyvale in the opening round of the Blooming Grove tournament. Nickerson, the dean of Henderson County area schoolboy basketball coaches, had very few anxious moments in seeing his career record go to 400-230 — all as head boys basketball coach at Malakoff High School. The Tigers made it easy on the 22nd-year coach, leading from start to finish. The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and extended it to 18-8 by the end of the first quarter. The onslaught continued as the lead went to 28-10 by midway through the second quarter and 35-20 at the half. The countdown to 400 was a formality in the second half. Once the final second ticked off the clock and Malakoff and Sunnyvale players shook hands, Nickerson was called to midcourt by Blooming Grove athletic director Scott Doring and given the game ball. With the crowd standing in appreciation, including a large contingent of Malakoff administration and some faculty members, a former player or two and members of his family and friends, Nickerson accepted the ball, smiled, waved and began accepting personal congratulations. “That was a very nice and unexpected thing they (Blooming Grove) did,” Nickerson said. “I appreciate it very much and the fact my family and so many of my friends and supporters were here. “It would have been nice to have gotten it (No. 400) at home, but it didn’t work out that way. This was very nice as well.” The win kept the Tigers unbeaten at 4-0. They are scheduled to face Cross Roads in the semifinals of the tournament today at 4:30 p.m. Stevie Schulte paced the Tigers in the win over Sunnyvale. He poured in 22 points. Also scoring in double figures in the milestone win were Cornelius Richardson with 16 and Vanoid Dawson 11. Marquise Dowell finished with eight. Afterwards, Nickerson, a 1978 graduate of Mineral Wells High School, didn’t to commit to staying around long enough to reach 500 wins. But he also didn’t reject the suggestion, smiling all the while.
