Lufkin's boys' golf team fell one shot short of a District 14-5A title Thursday afternoon as The Woodlands' Ryan Kelley holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole to give his team the win.

Lufkin's got solid rounds from all five golfers in the second and final round of the tournament at Huntsville's Raven Nest Golf Club.

Sophomores Michael Phillips (75), Will Griffin (78) and Sam Fidone (78) along with seniors Michael Haney (81) and Chase Webb (81) combined for a team total of 312. The Woodlands shot 307 on the day to beat the Panthers by one shot, 614-613.

"We fought them tooth and nail," Lufkin golf coach Danny Leatherman said. "We were down eight or nine shots at the turn but our guys sucked it up and got back in it. Our guys didn't settle for second and it took a 15-foot birdie on the last hole by their guy that's going to A&M to beat us."

Fidone and Griffin tied for third with two-day totals of 152 and Fidone won third in a playoff.

"All our guys stepped up and played with one of the best teams in the state, a team that will compete for the state tournament title," Leatherman said. "We showed that we could play with them. We showed what we have inside us and it's impressive."

As the second-place team the Panthers will advance to the Class 5A Region II tournament on April 23-24 at Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco. This is the first time for the Panthers to advance to regionals from the Houston-area district.

College Park placed third in the tournament.

Two-day totals for Lufkin were: Fidone 74-78—152; Griffin 74-78—152; Phillips 80-75—155; Webb 76-81—157; and Haney 78-81—159.

Lufkin's "B" team shot 344 in the second round, following a 343 first-round score. Members of the team are Josh Lewis, Jacob Scoggins, Kendall Smith, Chris Fougerousse and Marcus Eubanks.

Hannah Arnold won her second straight district title by making a birdie on the last hole of the tournament to win by one shot.

Hannah posted rounds of 78-75 in very tough conditions at Waterwood national nd Ravensnest Golf Course in Huntsville.
