I personally love my country very much. I have always, since I was very young, wanted to serve my country. I am almost finished working on my B.A., and every day I think about how much I would love to be on the frontlines with many of my friends in Iraq and Afghanistan...

....However,...I have been having trouble with this,....b/c I feel like our President is literally destroying our country,...the country he wants, and is working towards is not the country I always imagined myself serving...

What should I do?....I want to be a SEAL, and the age limit is 28,....I am 23, and thought about waiting until the next election....

There is a reason that we have officers in the military. Our Government has checks and balances. I don't buy into much of the hoopla regarding the extreme power of our President and Congress. Do you think for an instance that our Generals will allow for the Freedom of America to be wiped out by men of words ?

Now is the time for you to enlist, if you desire to do so. The only way that the United States will become a truly socialistic Nation is when the commanders are swayed by the logic of it's commander in chief. Some of the enlisted men are, but our Generals, Colonels, Majors, Captains, and Lieutenants realize many things. They are following orders, but if you look at history you will realize that the military understands things differently than the common populace. Once we start seeing our military leadership being removed, that's when we need to truly worry.

If you desire to serve the United States, now is your time to shine.

I can only tell you what my cousin has told me, who holds 2 Bronze Stars - maybe 3 (I forget), who has been in both the Navy and the Air Force, and who has been in it for 20 plus years, made a career out of it...who is not, at this time, going to re-enlist, so to speak... he won't. He's said things are "very" different now...

The only thing that concerns me is shades of VietNam and our soldiers having their hands tied, so to speak, and the blame game that's going on now.

Either way, your choice, and as for myself... I support you 100 percent either way.

I have a friend who was a High School football coach, has one state ring and another state game appearance and he gave it up to join the Army. He went into the Officer Training Course at Ft. Benning Georgia..is now a captain and he loves the Military. He is scheduled to return home at the end of October. The only thing he has said to me that is tough is of course being apart from family ( wife, son ) but if your a single guy...man i would say go for it.

Finish your degree. If you have ROTC at college, join up. Used to you could join before your Jr year--go a summer boot camp and then go to second camp between Jr and Sr year. You get paid for the camps and a monthly allowance your last two years. If not, talk to your recruiter about OCS, talk about joining the Reserve or guard, get your training, then go active, and then you could do OCS and OBC for your branch training. If you go Army, request Infantry, if you are want to be on the front lines-- they will grant your request.

I hope obama doesnt mismanage this war. I see repeats of mistakes of Viet Nam and if it is not run right, our public will turn on it in ahurry.

It does not hurt to ask for a little divine guidance. I would hope that you would pray for wisdom and guidance before making a decision. You cant go wrong.

I've been enlisted for 4 years, and I have 2 left. I was very excited and proud at first, but after these 4 long years my attitude has totally changed. I would pack up my truck and leave tomorrow, without thinking twice, if they would let me. The military life is not an easy one. Its really hard to explain to someone who isn't in the military why I hate it so much. Its one of those "you have to be there" kind of situation. The military is really good at doing stupid things and bringing down your morale. Especially as a junior enlisted man. We get treated like doodoo. But please, don't let me discourage you...its not for everyone... who knows.... you might love it. I'd say its almost worth it just because its an honorable thing to do and its something you will be able to look back on and be proud of.

I'm extremely proud of my service in the Navy.

Often people believe that military service is the only way to serve the country. It isn't. We need God-fearing, honorable men to stand and be responsible citizens in both the home and the community.

Ahh, Doc, maybe you need a change of scenery for the next two years. I cussed it, and three months after ETS, I wanted back in. Thought the baloney would be absent in civilian life, but it wasnt, and you found out despite the idiots (mostly Captains) everyone had a good head on in the military. I was in during Carter, and morale was bad, I know how you guys feel. You had your kickina Coach, Bush, replaced by a gay drill team sponsor. Do your job well, for us, and for yourself. I dont think obama listens. Do you feel the enemy came to Iraq and was to our benefit? Afghanistan, seems like a real you know what to fight in , it bankrupted the Russians.

I have to agree with you. I've been wondering if warfare will ever return to a conventional type of fighting. If warfare continues as it has, starting with Vietnam, and we used it in the Revolutionary War. Our hands are tied. If we allow our soldiers to use the force that is necessary the war could be over. I think the Geneva Convention/Accords have placed a limit on what can be done in battle in today's world. As long as diplomats instead of Generals are allowed to hammer out the policies, Nations will be at a disadvantage to the rogue populace that strikes blindly and without recourse to their own countrymen.

The majority of Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran do not desire to live under these despots, yet they live in fear. Fire has to be fought with fire, and until these factions are eliminated there will never be any peace.

If I had stayed in, I would be retiring next week with 30 yrs. The Corps was the right place for me to grow up. I don't know if I'd do it again, but I know I never regretted joining.

The service is full of people that join because they feel it's the right thing to do. You shouldn't make a decision based on the other way, which is deciding NOT to go because the commander in chief is not of your liking.

I have a friend whose son just finished Seal training last year, and he is in love with it. Gung Ho for his country.

If you chose to serve, and serve well, it will give you a satisfaction that no one can take away.

If you chose not to, there is NO shame. Many ways to serve your country as a patriot without military service.

Follow your heart, with God as your guide.

I'm with OldSchool on the ROTC and others on the importance of prayer in this decision. I know guys that I work with that got out because of Clinton, but wish they would have stayed in to affect policy within the Army during that period. The leadership in Afghanistan seems by the reports to have their head on straight. Afghanistan is a "hearts and mind" campaign and it will be long, tough slog. What finally turned the corner in Iraq was the local population getting sick of the crazies tearing up the neighborhood, and finally did something for themselves. It took us priming the pump with money for the SoI and other CA projects. The initial thing that led into the Surge being effective were our troops taking out enough of the bad guys and their networks that the Iraqis could see that the US wasn't going to leave them. I read Michael Yon, former SF, for most of my frontline, on the ground news. Michael Yon

Besides, we need more NDT's (Napolitano Domestic Terrorists).

Napolitano's non-apology aplogy
