TheRedBaron
Tonight, Tatum just wasn't tackling. The big back from Hallsville would not simply be knocked down. The pass coverage was shoddy, and again, the tackles just were not happening. It was a classic case of kids thinking they could just hit the runner and he would go down, only to realize he just bounced on by. A few times, it seemed like nobody on the Tatum defense knew where the ball was. From the sidelines it was obvious, the hand-offs by Hallsville were smooth, but not tricky. The Hallsville back was really shining tonight. Why? The Eagles defense was not wrapping up their tackles. This game was much closer than many thought it would be, but it was Tatum's to lose, and they did it. I'll admit it. Now, I don't know if the emotional factors were at play tonight and the boys just weren't performing, or if the bigger Hallsville team just suppressed Tatum's energy out there. Our secondary IS faster than those Hallsville receivers, but they seemed to either run out of gas, or just give up, maybe thinking the pass wasn't going to be thrown. Tatum's biggest enemy on offense was penalties. A lot of offsides and too much holding. It seemed like they were missing an element or two on the line. Some of the bigger boys who were really putting a hurt on the defense in last weeks scrimmage did not seem to be playing tonight. Also, I think the guy who really came ready to play did not see nearly as many posessions as he should have. Centers should have had the ball in his hands on most of the plays. He was solid as a rock out there. Woodard wasn't performing up to his potential, and Allen didn't see a lot of possession time either. Really, I think the offense was just, well, off, big time. As I have said in the past, however, a great defense will make a good offense look bad. That could have been the case tonight. When Tatum settles down, maybe next week, I think they will be much better. Now, before you think I'm being too hard on our boys, they held Hallsville to two touchdowns, and that was because they had some shining moments on defense with some good gang tackles. It was also because the quarterback from Hallsville was just too inconsistent on his passing and he bobbled a few of the hand-offs, which really contrasted with the smooth and seamless hand-offs at other times. Hallsville should have had about 3 more touchdowns. Their back was a good, solid, strong runner. Before anyone plays Hallsville this year, they need to do some tackling drills or they will not stop that freight train coming out of the backfield. Those big, strong backs cannot be simply knocked down with good shoulder contact, you have to wrap em up. Congrats Hallsville on your win tonight, and THANK YOU for the grace you showed the McIlwain boys. It was a pleasure having you as our guests tonight. God bless, and I hope you all made it home safely.
HvilleCat23
Ive got friends over, but i will say this off the bat. I was very impressed with Hallsvilles backup runner. He played solid as a starter tonight. I would have liked to see our starter show some light tonight, but was held out. Hallsville defense after the second quarter was ok... but more of what i want to see this season.
HvilleCat23
OK overall, the game was kinds fun to watch if your a defensive kind of guy like myself... However, Hallsville played like Hallsville on a wet field... Terribly. Ill go ahead and say what i have to share for others to know or note. Hallsville- Offense did block pretty well, the qb had plenty of time to pass all night. But he played like a first time qb plays, he was a little excited in the pocket. His passes all looked pretty and none were in any danger of being intercepted, although we only have two guys who will catch the ball well no matter what. The Wrs looked ok 11(lipsey) and 20(mitchell) were open more times than not, but either overthrown or it was a run play. These two look like they will give defenses a fit throughout the season with a more settled Qb ( wide open on various plays and got overthrown. Once again the Wrs couldnt hang onto the ball). RBs 22 (dedrick) and 7 looked pretty good. I am very confident in our running game now that our backup is solid, we have the speed (#2 and combo #22) so running depth will be pretty for the next two years. The O-line did pretty good, but will need to get better for a more matched opponent. Offensive playcalling was terrible. I thought i saw the same 10 plays until the 4th quarter. Holding onto the ball was the key, and they did ok didnt lose a fumble but looked kinda shaky the whole game, once again they didnt capitalize inside Tatums 30 yard line more than 5-6 times. This game should and could have been out of hand,(see tatum defense) You could definately tell this was the first game of the season. Defense was great after the first TD Tatum got on the board early on, but they closed the doors and closed them tight after that. Run defense was solid, pass defense was great (although Tatum may have helped us with that) and they didnt look outmatched in anything but speed. Tatum has lots of speed. The line looked good the LB corps looked great and the safetys (also missing a starter) looked pretty good. This will be Hallsvilles key for the season for sure. Had some fumbles go in their way, had two interceptions (one got called back though) and played Tatum more than they could handle. Not much for me to say here except they are what i thought they were. Tatum- Their offense was hard for me to judge. They had speed speed speed, but size on the line was a little questionable. And the Wrs could not hang onto the ball, the QB didnt throw up one handful of good passes the whole game. The QB looked fast, the RBs were fast and hard to bring down. The passing game will be the key or the fire to this years offense imo. I dont think they will face many defenses of caliber like Hallsville, but they will find some that are pretty stiff. Offense is questionable for this team. As Hallsville i felt like i kept seeing the same plays over and over again. Players were extremely fast i cant stress that enough. Gonna need more time for their QB to pass, and their RBs looked to have holes but very temporarely. Defense- They looked great on defense, their line was smart their LBs were on top. But they looked lost on some plays. Extremely fast defense again... fast lol. Their DBs however never seemed to be on their man tight enough, Hallsville didnt pass much but when they did they werent contested much for the catch. However, the defense once they found the ball swarmed nicely. I notice on a post above the tackling was an issue. IMO no more than any other team, but i did see a couple of guys get ran over. But Tatums size was small, speed is the strength. They faced a hole finding monster, i think yall did very well on defense. I think Hallsville will score more on many other games, i know Tatum will put some scores in the 30s 40s... Yall were very much more improved. Overall, this was a very classy game. Thats what i like for sure against Tatum Hallsville matchups is all the class and friendliness you can find at the game. Both teams will get better i think this was an off night for offense and an on night for defense. Or just two defenses catching the offenses in a slump. Idk well find out as the season goes on. Penalties killed both teams. This was just kind of a weird game in all to me. Good luck to the rest of the season Eagles. You are looking at another trip to the playoffs for sure! LightningBolt1000
Hville: Could you write a little longer post next time? That was too short. BTW we were pulling for Tatum in this one, but I know HHS is pretty good this yr.

Buzzard
Since Tatum is just barely a 3A squad, and Hallsville has been pretty good in 4A for a while, I'm impressed that Tatum played them so close. I think this gives Tatum fans some hope for a great year.
HvilleCat23
Tatum should be fine for challenging district. and Hallsville should be shooting for a playoff spot this year
tjtwii
Tatum has nothing to worry about this year. Hallsville will compete for sure in 13-4A.
HvilleCat23
I got this little info from LNJ.com TATUM — Tatum's B.J. Allen raced 80 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game, but the Hallsville Bobcats played stingy defense the rest of the night en route to a 14-6 victory Friday night at Tatum Eagle Stadium. The Hallsville offense, which returned only one starter from last year, was led by quarterback Jared Simpson and running back Dedrick Taylor. Simpson connected on 5 of 12 passes for 144 yards while also running for a touchdown. Taylor darted his way to 108 yards on 24 carries, helping the Bobcats control the clock and pick up 19 first downs. "Tatum quarterback Desmond Fite (7) watches tailback B.J. Allen as he carries the ball during Friday's season opener against Hallsville at Eagle Stadium in Tatum. Tatum struggled to move the ball following Allen's long. Allen finished with 109 yards on 16 carries. The Eagles only managed four more first downs, one of which came on a Hallsville penalty. Hallsville saw its first four drives end in Eagle territory, including two misses on open receivers in the end zone, before finally breaking through late in the second quarter. Simpson connected with Justin Wingfield for 39 yards to set up a three-yard touchdown run by Taylor. Austin Lightle tacked on the extra point, which proved to be the difference in the game with 1:42 left before the break. Tatum moved the ball to midfield, but Desmond Fite's pass was intercepted by Bo Marcum on the last play of the half. Hallsville padded its lead with a five-play, 46-yard drive in the fourth quarter. After Simpson completed a 38-yard pass to Eric Mitchell, Taylor ran for 15 yards to set up a first-and-goal situation. Simpson scored two plays later on a quarterback sneak to push Hallsville's lead to 14-6."
