It didn't last long. It was gone by the bottom of the inning, but by that time, Harleton already had all the luck it would need.

It already had Kayla McDaniel in the pitching circle.

McDaniel tossed a no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none to lead Harleton to a going-away 8-2 win over Warren in a Class 2A-Region III semifinal playoff game at a packed Lady Dragon Field.

McDaniel retired the first 11 batters she faced and 17 of the first 18 before a blurb of errors led to two Warren (27-7) runs during the final two innings.

By that time the Lady Wildcats (32-5) had already built a commanding six-run lead, though.

"Kayla was just picture-perfect tonight," said Harleton head coach Justin Kniffen, whose team will move on to face Linden-Kildare in a regional final at a site and time to be determined. It will mark Harleton's first-ever appearance in the fifth round of the playoffs, with a chance to punch a ticket to the state tournament in Austin on the line.

"These last two weeks, I've really seen Kayla pitch smarter than she ever has before," Kniffen continued. "She's been hitting her locations and changing speeds very well."

Combine that with her natural speed and spin, and it makes life difficult for opposing batters.

Warren didn't get the ball out of the infield until Josie Walters lifted a soft fly out to Megan Garrison in right field in the bottom of the fourth.

Harleton held a 4-0 lead by that time after posting back-to-back two-run innings in the third and fourth.

It was already plenty of support for McDaniel, who has been pitching at the varsity level since her freshman season.

"We hit the ball real well tonight," McDaniel said. "It feels good to get the win. It's exciting."

McDaniel said all of her pitches felt good and that she was making an effort to be more thoughtful on the rubber, like her coach alluded to after the game.

"You have to give it more thought because these games are more important," she said.

McDaniel helped her own cause as well, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Shelby Drew was the only other player with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and a walk.

One of Drew's knocks was a long fly ball double to deep left in the sixth that scored two runs, helping Harleton push its lead to 6-1.

The Lady Wildcats began their scoring in the third, when Morgan Jones and Drew each scored after drawing walks off Warren starter Breanna Johnson.

Jones was plated on a fielding error by Warren's third baseman and Drew later scored on a Garrison ground out.

The Lady Wildcats pushed across another two runs in the fourth with Becca Robert scoring on an error after starting a rally with a two-out single to short left.

Jones then followed with a single and later scored on an Abby Wyatt pop-up double to shallow left that fell between three Warren fielders.

"That was our goal was to put the ball in play," Kniffen said. "We knew we had a shot to make their pitcher throw some pitches if we got the bat on the ball. They made some errors and gave us some opportunities and then we made some big hits."

Johnson wound up taking the loss in three innings, striking out two and walking two.

Amber Kelley pitched four relief innings, giving up six hits while fanning two and walking two.

Ashley Garrison also knocked a long triple to right in the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch for Harleton's final run.

Johnson and Haley Unruh accounted for Warren's runs after each reaching on errors.

Today we were informed by the UIL that since we didn't complete the game before midnight last night, that the game will be started where we left off last night (1 1/2 innings to play) and it AUTOMATICALLY REVERTED TO A ONE-GAME SERIES. How can this be? It doesn't seem fair to the girls to expect a 2 of 3 series game and get 5 1/2 innings one day and 1 1/2 the next, especially since we were told yesterday that game 2 would start today.
