Junior High Softball @ Maud

Maud Parents- Please come to this month's School Board meeting to show your support for Junior High Softball for our girls. Now that we have a 6th, 7th, & 8th grade athletics program in place for them, let's give them a sport to compete in, besides basketball (which involves a small percentage of our girls). This would, in my opinion, be an excellent opportunity for our girls, and once initiated, I'm sure some of the other schools in the area would follow suit. They would just about have to, to remain competitive at the High School level in years to come.

Also, can anyone tell me what other schools in East Texas already have a Junior High Softball program? I know of Avery, Saltillo, and Sulphur Bluff.

coaching career

I am a soon to be college grad with a teaching degree and a business degree and would like to ask some people who have experience how to get started when I graduate. I have been coaching softball in Texas for about 7 years at the rec and select (a-ball) levels. I also played football and baseball all through high school and 1 year of baseball at the junior college level. I guess what I am wondering is were I should start looking for job postings and is it possible to get a gig as an assistant or even volunteer now without my teaching degree, so I can gain some experience at the HS level. I have a serious passion for sports and know this is were I want to be. I am just curious how difficult this will be to get started because it is always the hardest step to get your foot in the door with little experience.

American Freedom 14u - You Will Want To Read This

The American Freedom Fastpitch Softball Club proudly announces that Iyhia McKeel will serve as the head coach of the new 14u American Freedom (McKeel). Coach McKeel (formerly Iyhia McMichael) also will serve as a roving coach and special hitting instructor, and assist with recruiting for all American Freedom teams.

We invite every 14u eligible player to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity. All positions are open, including bracket pitching. Tryouts will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon, at J.J. Pearce High School, 1600 Coit Road, Richardson, Texas.

The Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPF) drafted Coach McKeel No. 1 in the 2004 draft. She led the Racers to the 2005 NPF Championship and was named the MVP of the 2005 NPF All-Star Game. Coach McKeel also was named NPF Player of the Year in her 2004 rookie season.

Coach McKeel is one of the most feared hitters to play in the NPF. During the 2005 season, McKeel hit .400 (62-155) with 12 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs. She drove in 35 runs, scored 56 times and stole 13 bases, posting a .684 slugging percentage and a .450 on-base percentage. In her 2004 rookie campaign, she won the NPF batting crown with a .349 average.

Coach McKeel graduated in 2004 from Mississippi State University. She played four years for head coach Jay Miller, head coach of the United States National Team. Coach McKeel finished her collegiate career as a 2-time NFCA All American. She is the only player in history to earn SEC Athlete of the Year honors twice (2003 & 2004). She was a 3-time, 1st-team All SEC Team honoree. Coach McKeel was named one of the three finalists for the USA Softball Player of the year in 2004.

Coach McKeel has served as an assistant coach for the University of Virginia and a graduate assistant at Stephen F. Austin University. Coach McKeel is the new head softball coach at new Wylie East High School. She previously served two seasons as the head coach at Wills Point High School.

Unfortunately, Texas UIL rules prohibit all players who reside in the Wylie East High School boundaries or attend any middle school that feeds into Wyle East High School from participating in tryouts or playing with any American Freedom team.

Coach McKeel has taken over our 14u program because she is 100 percent committed to the American Freedom's founding principle. An elite-level, college showcase program should be committed to the long-term development of players from within from 12u through 18u Gold. The American Freedom welcomes Coach McKeel to our program.

If you are unable to attend this tryout, please contact us immediately.

I am hosting a poll on the Texas Prep Softball website's forum to vote on whether we all think the UIL should go ahead and move the pitching distance to 43' for this upcoming season (2010) or wait until the mandatory time (2011). You do not have to be a member of that forum to vote in this poll. We are going to present the results of the poll at the UIL Update meeting for softball coaches at 10:30 am on Thursday at the TGCA Summer Clinic in Austin. I will post results of that meeting on the Texas Prep Softball website and forum as soon as I can after that meeting has concluded.

My sources have told me that the UIL may be leaning to wait until 2011 season to implement this rule, but that isn't confirmed or set in stone. I believe they would like to hear from the coaches and fans of high school softball before making the final call on this rule.

So come on over and vote!

Forum page: www.texasprepsoftball.net/forums
Web page: www.texasprepsoftball.net

Offense: Batting Out of Order

NFCA Rule

1. When an improper batter is discovered after she is out and before the next pitch, the proper batter is called out and is scored as if she was up. This does not affect credits of putouts or assists.

2. If an improper batter becomes a runner and then is discovered out of order, the proper batter is out and the putout is scored to the catcher.

3. If more than one batter bats out of turn in succession, score all play as it stands and skip the turn at bat of those who missed their turn.

In a recent game Team A started with 9 players. The leadoff batter for Team A had to leave after her first at bat. Team A continued to play with only 8 players. The next time the Team A leadoff batter (she has left the park) was supposed to bat the No. 2 batter in the lineup batted and reached first base. Team B realized the leadoff batter did not bat and told the Umpires that Team A batted out of order. The umpires called an out for batting out of order.

Question: Was it too late to call an out for batting out of order?
BIG RULE CHANGE IN SOFTBALL

The powers that be are finally changing the pitching distance for softball...this is longggggg overdue. Here is the press release:

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 7, 2009) — Effective with the 2010-11 school year, the pitching distance for high school varsity softball pitchers will increase from 40 feet to 43 feet.

The new pitching distance was one of four rules revisions made by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Softball Rules Committee at its annual meeting June 8-10 in Indianapolis. The rules changes subsequently were approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Although the new pitching distance is mandatory beginning with the 2010-11 school year, NFHS-member state high school associations may adopt the 43-feet distance in 2009-10, if desired.

After at least 10 years of debate by committee members, the NFHS has extended the fast-pitch pitching distance to 43 feet. The change to Rule 1-1-2b was made after two member state associations experimented with 43 feet – Florida for four years and Oregon for one year. Coaches surveyed within these states were overwhelmingly supportive of the change.

Creating a better balance between the offense and the defense was the major rationale for the rule change. Experimentation results from both states indicated more batted #### were hit into play.

“Our main thrust is getting the defense more involved,” said Mary Struckhoff, NFHS assistant director and liaison to the Softball Rules Committee. “When more #### are hit into play, the defense is more involved in the game, thus enhancing skill development.”

The second revision (Rule 1-5) concerned bat specifications. The majority of the text is simply reorganized from the current rules book.

“This is primarily an editorial change,“ Struckhoff said. “We just want to be more detailed in our specifications in order to give manufacturers, coaches, players and umpires guidance on what is and is not permissible.”

Another rule revision for next season affects hair devices. An exception was added to Rule 3-2-12, permitting “hard, unadorned devices, such as bobby pins, barrettes and hair clips, no longer than 2 inches, to be worn to control a player’s hair.” The rule was changed to allow players more options.

“The exception allows players a practical way of dealing with their hair,” Struckhoff said. “The committee didn’t see that hair devices would be a nuisance or would pose undue risk to players.” The change also maintains consistency with NFHS volleyball rules regarding the same issue.

The final rules change concerns how a winning pitcher is determined. The committee altered Rule 9-6-6, changing the required number of innings pitched for a starting pitcher to be credited with a win to “half of the total number of innings played in the game.” The new language gives the starting pitcher the ability to earn a win even if she leaves the pitching position for another defensive position and returns as pitcher later in the game. It also allows greater clarity in determining the winning pitcher when a game is terminated due to the run-rule.

“Softball and baseball are different games and the requirements for a pitcher to be credited with a win should reflect those differences,” Struckhoff said. “In softball, it’s possible for the pitcher to pitch an inning, leave the position and then come back to pitch later in the same game. The change was made to reflect the culture of the sport.”

Softball is the fourth-most popular sport among girls at the high school level with 371,293 participants during the 2007-08 season, according to the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS. It also ranks fourth in school sponsorship for girls across the nation with 14,846 participating schools

EF's LADY JACKET's

LNJ interactive Elysian Fields Softball Roster, Click the link below to see the team. Thanks Longview News Journal
http://www.news-journal.com/sports/content...ball/index.html

ELYSIAN FIELDS — Cheryl Boyett will conclude her Elysian Fields softball career this week before heading to college at Stephen F. Austin State. Boyett said her senior year as a Lady Jacket has been special because of the chemistry on the team.

"We care about the younger players and we're more close than we have been in the past," Boyett said. "And we've had no mean seniors."

If there were mean seniors, Boyett would be assassinating her own character. She is the only senior on the team, which puts her in a unique place in Elysian Fields softball history.

Boyett is the only person who played on the last Elysian Fields softball team to make it to the state tournament — in 2006 — and the most recent team, which opens up this year's UIL State Softball Championships against Brock in a Class 2A semifinal at 2 p.m. Thursday at McCombs Field in Austin.

If Elysian Fields defeats Brock, the Lady Jackets will compete for the state title at 11 a.m. Saturday. The other semifinal matches Early and Hallettsville at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Boyett and current head coach Shane Smelley are direct links to the 2006 team. Smelley was an assistant coach on the 2006 team, which advanced to the Class 2A championship game, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Weimar.

Boyett said she wishes she could have done more to help her team win the 2006 state title, which would have given the Lady Jackets back-to-back state titles after taking the 2005 crown. She concedes her contributions to the 2006 team were limited because she was a pinch runner.

This season Boyett is Elysian Fields' starting center fielder. Her .310 batting average is second on the Elysian Fields squad to a .410 mark for Lacy Liles, who earned the area's 2009 batting title. While she has considerable more playing time now, she still draws on memories of the 2006 trip to Austin.

Boyett said other than not winning the state championship, most of the memories are good. She said she would like to see this year's team have the same approach the 2006 team had.

"We can not let the excitement of being in Austin and the crowd overtake us," Boyett said. "We did a good job with that before and we have to do it again."

Boyett said it would also help her team to score early. To help with that, Smelley made alterations to his team's practice schedule.

Tuesday's practice was held during the heat of the day as a way to anticipate Thursday's game-time temperature in Austin, which is expected to be around 92 degrees. Smelley said the 2006 team also played in hot weather, creating hard infield conditions.

The Lady Jackets will practice this afternoon at St. Edward's University in Austin. Smelley said the availability of the cross-town field was created by former Elysian Fields head coach Crystal O'Brien, who is now a teacher at Judson High School in Converse.

Smelley said he has a couple bad memories of 2006, mainly a possible Kristi Kelly double being called a foul ball in the first inning and the bases-loaded walk which scored the game's lone run in the fourth inning, which Smelley said appeared to be a strike to him. Like Boyett, however, Smelley said his thoughts of 2006 are pleasant.

"The calls that were made against us was nothing we could control. I don't have any ghosts from the past," Smelley said. "The lesson I learned from then is to control what we can, especially defense, since that infield is going to be rock hard."

Elysian Fields junior pitcher Blair Hickey wasn't on the 2005 or 2006 teams, but she has plenty of indirect knowledge of those teams. Her oldest sister, Brooke, was the ace of the 2005 team. Another sister, Baylee, was a pitcher for the 2005 and 2006 teams.

Ironically, Blair will be traveling to a place her older sisters are familiar with as both have attended the University of Texas.

Brooke graduated from Texas last month with a degree in accounting at the same time Blair's Region III semifinal series against Warren transpired, forcing their parents — Barbara and Butch — to travel back and forth from Brooke's graduation ceremony in Austin and Blair's games in Pollok. Baylee completed her junior year at Texas last month.

Blair said even among what could be over 1,000 fans in attendance, she can hear advice from her sisters, and especially her parents. Her entire family watched her in several key games this season, including the bi-district series against Hughes Springs and two regular-season games against rival Harmony.

Blair said she will absorb advice yelled to her by her family concerning emotions and game strategy.

"It's a big field, but it's still the same game and the bases are the same distance. I have to be calm and play loose because I may only get this one chance," Blair Hickey said. "I have to force groundouts and pop-ups. Brooke won her state title without striking out anybody (a 2-0 win over Troy in the 2005 state-title game)."

Boyett's future will soon involve more chickens and eggs than catching fly ####. She will major in poultry sciences at SFA.

Before that begins however, she has to take her place in history, a role she is looking forward to.

"To be the only player on the 2006 and 2009 teams, I feel blessed. The other players look up to you," Boyett said. "I have to lead them the best I can."

I was an unbiased spectator at the Troup vs Linden softball series at Lear Park 2 weeks ago and witnessed the worst fans I have ever seen in my entire life. The Troup fans were crying and yelling after every pitch throughout the 3 game series. During game 1 a fan was escorted out and during games 2 and 3 muliple fans were escorted out by their own school superintendent who had to wear out a good pair of shoes walking in and out. I was so embarrassed for the fans from Linden and the Lear Park people.

At one time a fight was going on behind the Troup dugout between 2 women, one was the coaches wife who was confronted by a fan from Franklin who came to settle a score their previous game a week earlier. What took the cake was the fans were yelling obscene language at the Linden catcher, that was completely off the chain. The Linden fans were asked to stay in the gate for 20 minutes or so and then they were escorted out by Longview Police.

I can't believe Linden hasn't complained about this, and I hope someone wrote UIL a letter concerning the Troup fans and coaches behavior.

I believe this won't be a low scoring game. Both offenses will put pressure on the opposing defenses. Celina has a good SR pitcher but she's not any better than the one's Spring Hill has already faced on the road to Austin. Like I said Celina has good sticks 1-8 and will put the ball in play.

Gotta go with my Spring Hill friends. Kayla has really showed great poise and toughness on the mound and this team's offense is a scoring machine. Keep applying tha pressure! Remember, SPEED KILLS!!!!!!

Spring Hill 6 - Celina 4 Winner moves on and wins STATE!!!!!!!

EF vs Rosebud-Lott Game Article

Stopped just short of state: Rosebud-Lott edged 3-2 by Elysian Fields in 2A-III softball final
by Marcus Hood | Sports Writer

May 29, 2009
ATHENS - The run was unearned. But the victory was well-earned.

Elysian Fields pitcher Blair Hickey drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning triple to the center-field wall and the Lady Jackets denied Rosebud-Lott a trip to the Class 2A state softball tournament with a 3-2 win in the Region III final Thursday night.

“That killed us,” Rosebud-Lott coach Keele Wells said. “I mean, that’s not the only thing that killed us. Everyone contributed to this loss. We didn’t get the hits; they did. They deserved it.”

The Lady Cougars, who finished their season with a 21-7 record and advanced farther than any other team in school history, were outhit 7-5 but kept the game tied most of the way by taking advantage of five Elysian Fields errors.

But on the seventh-inning shot that proved to be the game-winner, it was the Lady Jackets (33-9) who got the benefit of the error.

With one out in the inning, Danie’l Goss hit a ground ball back to Rosebud-Lott pitcher Victoria Conners. The ball deflected off Conners to third baseman Kaitlyn Meyer, who couldn’t control it as Goss reached on the error.

That brought up Hickey, who drilled the shot to center. The ball had enough air under it that it looked as though Paige Bartek was going to be able to reel it in. When she missed the ball by mere inches, it reached the wall, Goss reached home and Hickey easily made third.

“She hustled her butt off,” Wells said of Bartek’s attempt. “We tell them all the time, ‘Hustle your butt to the ball and if you don’t reach it, hopefully someone will be behind you.’”

But by then it was too late.

Still, in a game that had been back and forth to that point, no one, especially Elysian Fields coach Shane Smelley, felt it was even close to being over because the Lady Cougars had the final at-bat.

“It was a back and forth and we knew they hit the ball really well. They have all year,” he said. “I was afraid it was going to be the last person with the bat in their hand will win it.”

Bartek was first up in Rosebud-Lott’s seventh and started things off with a hit to left, bringing up Taylor Bartek.

Wells had avoided using the sacrifice bunt much of the season and hadn’t used it at all Thursday night. But it was in the plans here, until she talked to Taylor Bartek, who admitted she probably wasn’t going to be able to put the bunt down because of nerves.

“I told her, ‘Then you have to promise me you’ll get a hit,’” Wells said. “She came through earlier but this time she didn’t, so what can you do?”

Instead, Bartek popped out in foul territory, then Bethani Lee followed with a strikeout. But it still wasn’t over because that brought up Rosebud-Lott’s hottest hitter, Skylar Savage.

“I had read in the paper where she doesn’t like to bunt,” Smelley said of Wells. “But still in that situation, we were still looking for it. Especially since it was the bottom of the lineup. Not that the bottom of their lineup can’t hit, they had been hitting us all day. But you move her to second and you get (Savage) up there, and a hit wins it and she had been hitting the ball hard against us.”

Savage went to the plate 1-for-3 with a triple and a run.

“I told her there’s nobody better we could have up there,” Wells said.

Smelley was on the same page as he went to the circle and discussed the option of walking Savage.

“But I decided if you walk her, you put the runner on second and a base hit scores her anway,” he said. “So I told them, ‘Let’s just go after her and see if we can get her to pop out.”

They got her instead to ground into a fielder’s choice, hitting the ball to second and forcing Paige Bartek.

“The girls know I tell it like it is, and I don’t sugar coat it for them,” Wells said. “We didn’t help ourselves at the plate today. We struck out and popped out too many times.”

Smelley agreed that missed opportunities by the Lady Cougars helped his team survive and advance to its third state tournament.

“We were able to overcome our mistakes and survive,” he said. “That’s a great (Rosebud-Lott) ballclub right there and you hate to see a good ballclub lose, but at this point everyone is good. They’ll be back here next year.”

But for the Lady Cougars, who have no seniors, the goal is getting beyond that.

Said Wells: “I told them to start preparing for next year. ‘Be proud of what you’ve accomplished. You got farther than you did last year, but next year you have to get farther than you did this year.’ I have six juniors who have one more shot at the state tournament and that’s our ultimate goal."

mhood@temple-telegram.com

WAY TO GO LADY JACKETS SEE YA IN AUSTIN

Thought this would be some good reading on what the Coach from Lott said about their up comming game with EF.

MADISONVILLE - The Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars rolled to the Class 2A Region III final with an 8-2 win over Corrigan-Camden on Saturday.

“They weren’t as tough as what we had been seeing,” Rosebud-Lott coach Keele Crouch said.

Victoria Conners (19-5) allowed just two hits in the win, with Corrigan-Camden using a walk, hit by pitch and a hit to score their lone runs.

But the Cougars (21-6) offense was the story of the game, pounding out 17 hits, including two doubles by Ellen Reid and one each for Skylar Savage, Julie Thornton and Conners.

“It’s nice to get those hits,” Crouch added. “I think that helps build the girls’ confidence.”

The Lady Cougars will advance to face Elysian Fields at a time and place to be determined next weekend.

Although Elysian Fields has a strong recent playoff history, Crouch believes her team has the capability to advance, especially because her team has already defeated Big Sandy Harmony, which won District 18-2A, the same district that Elysian Fields hails from.

“I told the girls that they have the ability to beat them,” she said. “We just have to get it done. Right now it’s real exciting here and these girls have already got Rosebud-Lott as far as it’s ever been in softball.”

EF vs Warren Game #2

Boyett hits the gap to boost Lady Jackets to win

By Jon Dustin Brooks, News Messenger

Saturday, May 23, 2009

POLLOK — Cheryl Boyett got the pitch she wanted in the bottom of the eighth, delivered, and then needed a little help getting to first base.

"I almost didn't even make it because I was so excited," said Boyett, Elysian Fields' lone senior who ripped a 1-2 fastball into the right-centerfield gap, easily scoring Jordan Simmons from third for the game-winning run in the Lady Jacket's 3-2 win over Warren in the deciding game of a best-of-three Class 2A, Region III semifinal playoff series Saturday at Central Pollok High School.

"My coach had to tell me to keep coming, keep coming," Boyett continued. "I just knew I had to pull through for the team."

Simmons, meanwhile, the Lady Jackets' starting right fielder who hasn't been in the line-up since the middle of district play, was inserted into the No. 7 hole for this series and the sophomore came through with a pair of hits in Saturday's Game 2, including a leadoff, stand-up triple that straddled the left field line and set up Boyett's walk-off drive in the eighth.

"It was crazy; I hadn't been hitting all year, it was just insane," Simmons said. "Coach asked if I wanted (Boyett) to bunt and I said no because I knew if she bunted, they were going to try to get me."

Simmons also led off the sixth with a single, stole second and later scored on a Lacy Liles sacrifice fly to give her team a 2-0 lead heading into the seventh.

Elysian Fields (32-9) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with an Ashley Quintana sacrifice fly to center that scored Danie'l Goss.

"It was kind of nerve-racking but I've worked hard all week, staying after practice to hit a lot," Simmons said. "(The single) kind of helped me notice that I could do it because I haven't really had that much confidence. It picked me up."

The Lady Jackets almost needed no extra-inning heroics to get the win, their sixth straight in the postseason.

Trailing 2-0 with three outs left in its season, Warren got back-to-back singles from Amber Kelley and Jordan Spivey to lead off the seventh but Elysian Fields pitcher Blair Hickey recovered to strike out the next two batters, leaving her team an out shy of the win.

Lady Warriors' nine-hole hitter Victoria Conner then drew a walk to load the bases, after which Brandi Burns smoked a hard ground ball that bounced hard off Elysian Fields shortstop Savannah Quintana's leg. The ensuing throw was too late to get Burns at first and Kelley and Spivey each scored on the play, forcing extras at 2-2.

"I don't like playing close games but it's good for us to have a close game because we hadn't been in one in the playoffs yet," said Elysian Fields head coach Shane Smelley. "I've been telling the girls something bad is eventually going to happen and we're going to have to come back from it. Luckily we were the home team and we were able to come back with some key hits in the eighth and win."

The win gave the Lady Jackets a sweep over Warren (27-8) and advanced them to next weekend's regional finals where they will face Rosebud-Lott or Corrigan-Camden at a time and place to be determined. It will also be for the right to a spot in next month's state tournament, a place the Lady Jackets last went to in 2006, falling in the title game. Elysian Fields won the 2A championship in 2005.

Both teams had chances unfulfilled prior to the late innings. Warren had the first opportunity in the top of the third when Conner and Burns occupied second and third with only one out.

Conner was tagged out at home on a bunt back to Hickey in the circle for the second out, however, and Hayley Unruh grounded out to Quintana at short to end the threat.

Elysian Fields later left the bases loaded in the fourth when Candise Wise had an infield flyout and Liles flew out to short.

The Lady Jackets still cranked out nine hits on Warren's Chelsea Walters, led by Goss, Savannah Quintana, Simmons and Boyett, who each went for two.

Hickey got the complete-game win, striking out nine, walking one and giving up five hits. Walters took the loss in a complete game, hitting two batters and walking none.

SH vs Splendora

This had to be one of the most exciting games I have ever seen. SH never gave up even after (once again) making multiple errors on the infeild (game 3) . K. Williams never tired on the mound and with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the top of the seventh their #8 hitter eakes out an infeild single, believe its their right fielder (Fudge). From their it kept going and next thing u know 4 runs on the board. This team from Splendora was pretty good and can swing the bat! but in the end it was SH speed that decided it (2 infeild singles) (Fudge and Campbell) then Williams hits a 2 rbi double to gap in left center......Is softball the greatest game to watch, yes it is!!! Good luck Lady Panthers, take out Huntington.

The girls from Brownsboro gave a fine effort, but SH was just too strong both on the offensive and defensive side of the game. I had heard Brownsboro district was weaker than some others. It appears that may have been the case. SH 10 Brownsboro 0 in 5 innings.

EF- Woden/ Harmony-Central Heights

Elysian Fields 4, Woden 0

RUSK — Lindsey Tidwell drove in two runs with a couple of hits, and Blair Hickey tossed a four-hit shutout as Elysian Fields earned a 4-0 win over Woden in a Class 2A area playoff game.

The win advances Elysian Fields (29-9) to the regional quarterfinals next week against either Troup or Linden-Kildare.

Hickey (27-8) struck out seven and walked four, and the Lady Yellowjackets backed her with seven hits.

Tidwell was 2-for-2 and Ashley Quintana 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hickey, Danie'l Goss and Lauren Parker all added one hit.

Harmony 3, Central Heights 0

ARP — Amber Wilburn and Samantha Matulis combined on a shutout, and the Harmony Lady Eagles shook off nearly three weeks worth of rust to earn a 3-0 Class 2A area playoff win over Central Heights.

Wilburn allowed one hit and struck out eight in five innings, and Matulis fanned three in the final two frames as Harmony improved to 26-7 on the year. Central Heights ends its season with a 21-17 record.

Wilburn's signature change-up and high fastballs limited Central Heights to just three hits.

"Our defense backed me up really well," Wilburn said. "I thought we would be a little rusty after not playing a game for so long. But we did good. It actually helped because I had a few weeks to practice my throwing."

Three costly Lady Devil mistakes were the result of three unearned Harmony runs.

Raney Pierce, Wilburn and Lyndsey Bailey all pounded hits in the second inning to put runners in position to score when the Lady Devils made their second error. Harmony scored a run when the ball was thrown away at first base.

Lauren Slaydon had two singles and Kaylee Dawson had a single late to help put the game away.
