Will Gary Patterson Leave TCU

With the season Patterson is having and in my opinion his body of work at TCU, will Patterson leave for a more high profile position?

Here is my view. Patterson could leave and have instant financial security for his family by going to ND, Michigan, or A&M. But he could go 6-6 at TCU for the next 10 years and collect a nice paycheck.

As evidenced last Saturday, TCU has an issue with national exposure. The are "Game Day", but you could not see the game.

Five Greatest Longhorns

From Austin American -Statesman

LONGHORNS FOOTBALL

The top five Horns of all time
Friday, November 20, 2009

THE BEST EVER: OUR PICKS

Who are the best players ever at Texas? The debate is open, but here are our picks for the top five:

Earl Campbell

Campbell was Texas' first Heisman Trophy winner. He won in 1977 when he led the nation in rushing with 1,744 yards. He also was the first winner of the Dave O'Brien Trophy and an All-American. His Texas teams went 34-12-1 in his four-year career (1974-77), though the Longhorns were only 1-2 in bowl games.

Tommy Nobis

Considered one of college football's all-time greatest linebackers, Nobis averaged nearly 20 tackles a game in his three-year career (1963-65). His Texas teams went 27-6, including an 11-0 national championship season his sophomore year. The Longhorns were 2-0 in bowl games with Nobis, beating Navy in the Cotton Bowl his sophomore year and Alabama in the Orange Bowl his junior year. That Orange Bowl win featured Nobis making one of the most famous tackles in Longhorns history, stopping Alabama quarterback Joe Namath on a fourth-and-inches play late in the game. Nobis also played offense, starring as a guard, and legendary Texas coach Darrell Royal called him "the finest two-way player I have ever seen."

James Street

Plain and simple, Street was a winner. He went 20-0 as a starter in his Longhorns career, running Texas' wishbone offense to perfection in 1968 and 1969. As a senior, Street led Texas past Arkansas in The Big Shootout game and then, one month later, to a 21-17 win over Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl to seal the Longhorns' 11-0 season and national championship. He also was a top pitcher for Texas' baseball team, leading the Longhorns to a pair of Southwest Conference titles with two career no-hitters.

Ricky Williams

Williams, Texas' second Heisman Trophy winner, holds or shares 20 NCAA rushing records, and ushered in the Mack Brown era by breaking Tony Dorsett's career rushing mark in the 1998 game against Texas A&M. Texas went 31-17-1 in his four years (1995-98), though Texas was 1-2 in bowl games. His career rushing and scoring records were eventually broken, but he remains at the top of the Longhorns' record books for career yards (6,279) and touchdowns (72).

Vince Young

Like Street, Young was a dynamic leader who made winning an art form. He went 30-2 in his three years (2003-05) at Texas, leaving for the NFL after leading the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship with an 11-0 record. Only Colt McCoy has won more games as a Texas quarterback, and Young's heroics in memorable wins over USC, Ohio State, Kansas and Oklahoma State secure his place in Texas lore.

— Richard Tijerina

Could someone please explain to me why this is? If those three guys were from Florida, I'd say it'd be easy money to assume at least 2 of the three would be gators....same if they were from California...They'd more than likely all be Trojans....I can understand maybe Jeffcoat not coming simply because we are pretty stocked with young blue chip DE's, but after Shipley leaves, we don't have a clear cut #1 wr and definetly don't have a #1 rb....any thoughts?

UT's DJ Monroe was arrested last night for DWI. I guess he was celebrating the big win over BU. Now, this is just stupid for a player for UT to get arrested for anything while we're on the stretch run to the Big 12 title game at Jerry World. It's completely ignorant to do it, but I also realize he's a kid and a human who makes mistakes and will continue to make mistakes, but can learn from them.

I say suspend him for a couple of games, but don't kick him off the team like some people on the ESPN boards were saying a few minutes ago. Heck, every time you go out to eat and have 3 beers you are technically driving while intoxicated. One of my good friends has gotten a DWI and it costs a bunch of money.

Hopefully he'll learn from this.

USC is still in the AP Top 25 after being destroyed by Gerhart and Stanford. Alabama jumped UT after beating MSU on the road 31-3. I don't exactly know why Bama would jump Texas today as both won convincingly and UT was beating BU 40-0 at half.

Those voters should know UT could've put many more points on BU if only they'd wanted to. What does Texas have to do to quit being jumped by Bama in these polls?

I mean, if it's always such a big deal about style points how could Alabama have jumped UT when they only put up 31?

I just don't understand sometimes.

I predict this team will win their BCS Bowl game. And they get almost the whole team back next year.

But, if they are going to play in the top tier of college football, drop the ugly uniforms and go back to basic uniforms. They looked like an "Oregon" fashion show last night. As a matter of fact, I heard that 10 guys off of Oregon's team want to transfer to TCU. Can you imagine TCU against Oregon?
SMU becomes bowl eligible

I don't think SMU is talked about much on this board but I believe this is AWESOME and quite newsworthy!

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...8b37.html?ocp=3

I was at the game myself. It was very very exciting, came down to the very last seconds. The guys really had to execute to pull this one off but the win is VERY sweet! I know several of the players and I know they have been working so hard this year and to finally see what the program has worked so hard for for so many years finally become a reality, most of them are beyond words.

This honestly feels like the first time the students are PROUD to say they are Mustangs, and very proud of our team. I have never seen everyone so excited about football. It was very fun to see everyone rush the field at the end of the game too. It was also Family Weekend today too so they definitely got an exciting game and they got to see exactly how much our team has improved this year.

As far as statistics go:

SMU is 5-1 in Conference USA; which is tied for the league lead and leads the west division. This is the best league record for SMU since a 7-1 league mark in 1983. It is also the most league wins for the Mustangs since joining C-USA (won four C-USA games in 2005 and 2006).

SMU is 6-4 on the season and bowl eligible for the fifth time (1985, 1986, 1997, 2006, 2009) since the last bowl appearance. The last bowl was the 1984 Aloha Bowl (Dec. 28, 1984, 27-24 win vs. Notre Dame).

We just got June Jones last year and he is making so many strides to turn this team around. We are super excited and proud here on the Hilltop!

As also stated in the topic title, we went 1-11 last year on the season and now we currently sit at 6-4. Amazing turnaround! I am so proud of my team and just wanted to share

Well, today against a bad Colorado team and the game on the line with A&M needing only a fg to win he throws a bad pick. Overall stats are 20 of 36 for 242 yds. with 1 TD and 1 INT with the game on the line. A very nice 6.7 yds per completion. So much for all that throwing down the field and criticizing McCoy for not. His stats today were 33 of 42 for 470 yds. with 2 TD and 1 int and a 11.2 yds per completion. You just don't lose by 50 to K-State and lose to Colorado by any margin and get named 1st team All-Conference.

Liberty-Eylau's L. James getting more and more love...

Oregon's James didn't take long to become special

November 4, 2009 11:33 AM
Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller

Media guides aren't typically known for understatement. More often than not, the descriptive blurb fancies up a player, telling a reader that some guy you've never heard of is among the best at his position. Or that he was ranked in this super-fantastic way by some recruiting analyst.

Under LaMichael James' pleasantly grinning photo, however, is this: "Should figure in the mix at running back at some point in 2009."

The Oregon redshirt freshman running back started figuring in the offensive mix fairly quickly, in no small part because starting running back LeGarrette Blount went all Mike Tyson at Boise State.

Playing Robin to Blount's Batman at Boise, he rushed for 22 yards on just two carries. After Blount was suspended, he got 56 against Purdue. What a nice little, 5-foot-9, 180-pound back he was.

Then, boom! 152, 118, 81, 152, 154 and 183.

That 183, of course, came at the expense of the previously impenetrable USC run defense in the Ducks 47-20 throttling of the mighty Trojans. It was his "Hello, world" moment, his stentorian Halloween "Boo!" to the rest of the Pac-10.

Suffice it to say that James, who ranks 15th in the country with 114.75 yards rushing per game while averaging 7.0 yards per carry, is fitting into the mix.

Naturally, Oregon coach Chip Kelly alights on the scary part.

"Each week he keeps getting better and better and he hasn't stopped," Kelly said. "He's a freshman. I don't think you've seen his best yet."

Which means Stanford, which plays host to the Ducks on Saturday, might see a back who's even better than the one who sliced and diced the Trojans like a teppan-yaki chef at a Japanese steakhouse.

Of course, the Ducks' spread-option, which piled up 613 yards against USC and ranks ninth in the nation in scoring (35.6 points per game), isn't all about James.

"He's very, very, very talented," Cardinal coach Jim Harbaugh said. "This team is red-hot. The execution was at the highest level that I've seen anybody run the spread-option -- the speed in which they do it."

James hails from Texarkana, Texas. The Pac-10 blog has never been there, but it's reasonable to imagine that Eugene is probably a bit different than James' hometown. There's the weather, of course. Belt buckles are probably a bit larger in Texarkana, and the hair a bit longer in Eugene. And then there are the Texarkana football fans who gave James a quizzical look when he announced he was going to play for the Ducks.

James picked Oregon over TCU, Minnesota and Oklahoma State in large part for the pure adventure of going someplace exotic.

"I just wanted to be different," he said. "I like the challenge. If someone tells me I can't do something, I feel like I need to prove it. I want to be the person who went to Oregon and made it."

He's certainly doing that.

James generated a good deal of positive buzz during his redshirt year, but the Ducks felt no need to play him with Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount leading the nation's No. 2 rushing attack.

Entering 2009, James was projected as the "lightning" backup to the thunderous, 240-pound Blount in the "Oh Le-La!" backfield, but things -- you may have heard -- changed fairly quickly when Blount melted down at Boise State.

Now Blount is, apparently, about to return from his suspension. That could mean Blount will take carries away from James.

"I don't care about the carries," James said. "As long as we win the game, I'm very happy."

That might sound like potentially empty talk, but James said Blount is "like a brother" to him. He pointed out that they ran post-practice gassers together this week in anticipation of Blount's return. He said Blount has received a bum rap nationally based on one horrible incident.

"LeGarrette is not that type of person. He's a great person," James said.

James almost certainly will remain the No. 1 option whenever Blount returns. He's gone from "in the mix" to being the main course.

Kelly said he thought James had a chance to be special. Just not this special, this quickly.

"I thought he was going to be a really good player," Kelly said. "Did I think he was going to run for 180-something against USC? No."

UT's (Gilmer's) Curtis Brown gaining recognition...

By MIKE FINGER AUSTIN BUREAU-Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN — If Mack Brown had spent some time with Oneta Taylor, he would have known better.

If he had seen what happened when a 4-month-old grandson ended up on her doorstep, and how she raised him just like she raised 10 kids of her own even though she was, to use her word, “crippled,” Brown wouldn't have had any doubts.

But the coach of the Texas Longhorns didn't know any of this when he met Curtis Brown. All the coach saw was a bashful teenager who never talked, who didn't exude bravado like the kids he usually recruited, and who gave outsiders no inkling of the inner strength his feeble grandmother had instilled in him.

“I discouraged him from coming here,” Mack Brown said. “He was so shy, and I didn't feel like he had a tremendous amount of confidence. And this is a place where you need to have confidence, or it will eat you up.”
A grander stage

At a nursing home in Longview, Taylor laughs when she hears that story. She stayed up late Saturday to watch Curtis Brown return the first interception of his career 77 yards for a touchdown against Oklahoma State on TV, and she said she saw such a moment coming. Others looked at her grandson and saw a lack of self-esteem. But Taylor knew he just needed the right stage.

“He used to put shows on for me,” Taylor said. “He would walk on his hands and do flips. He'd flip over and over just like a stick of wood.”

Exactly why Brown ended up with his grandmother is a subject neither he nor Taylor likes to discuss. All that matters, Brown said, is “I wanted for nothing” and “I had enough love.”

He played wide receiver in high school in the East Texas town of Gilmer, but all it took was one look for UT assistant Duane Akina to realize Brown had all the makings of an elite cornerback. Strong, agile and faster than almost everyone on the team, Brown has so many physical gifts that Akina calls him “as good of an athlete as (he's) ever coached.”

But his transition to defense didn't go smoothly. Having no idea how to line up, Brown's awkward stance and technique drew laughs from teammates as a freshman. Even heading into his junior season this year, it was unclear whether he'd catch on.

Then everything came together. Three years of drills sank in, and he started to look not only like a starter, but like one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the country. And that shy, reserved exterior? It's crumbled, too.

“He's not a trash talker,” safety Earl Thomas said. “But he's finally got his swagger. Once he gets to know you, he won't be quiet.”

Cat-like skills

Defensive end Sergio Kindle said Brown is “faster than a cheetah,” and teammates have taken to calling him “The Cat,” not only for his quickness, but for his knack of always landing on his feet.

Brown gets a kick out of that nickname, because what the other UT players don't know is how well the moniker fits. As a child in Taylor's house, he was surrounded by cats. Inside and outside, there were as many as 20, and he had names for all of them.

“We called one Miss Lady.” Taylor said. “Miss Lady was proud. She had a gold chain around her neck.”

Brown was never as showy with his pride, but it is there.

Taylor made sure of it.

Conference Officials Need to Go...

This has just bugged me for a long time.

Officials in college football are employed, paid, assigned to games, and reviewed by their own conferences. Conferences have a HUGE monetary stake in the outcome of the final BCS Standings. There is just a real obvious conflict of interest in my opinion in games involving highly-ranked teams and it has reared it's ugly head in recent college football games.

The Florida/Arkansas game a few weeks ago comes to mind, where the officiating was clearly lopsided and Florida was aided by a horrendous call late in the game.

I think something worse happened yesterday. Indiana was flat-out robbed against #4 Iowa. I watched this game from start to finish and I have NEVER seen a more stunningly biased officiating crew in a nationally televised game. Sure, you could argue that Iowa made some great plays in the 4th quarter to come back (which they did) but you can easily argue that the game should never have been within Iowa's reach.

The replay officials took not one, but TWO clear Indiana touchdowns off the board. Their analysis on the first call was that because the ruling on the field as "incomplete" there was not substantial evidence to overturn the call on the field. I was initially OK with the analysis...Indiana scored on the next play. But later in the game, Indiana caught a pass that was ruled a touchdown on the field by the side judge who was right next to the player and could clearly see his leg drag in the end zone. They reviewed it, and in a departure from their earlier analysis, decided there was enough evidence to overturn the call on the field, despite there being clear evidence that the foot dragged in the end zone. To take that touchdown away was highway robbery and they got the call wrong. Had it just been those two calls, it may not have been that big of a deal...but there was so much more.

Indiana was whistled for a bad personal foul call on the ensuing series which gave Iowa 15 more yards. The refs gave Iowa a ridiculous spot on a 3rd down play to keep a drive alive. Almost every big play by Indiana in the second half was called back for holding. Every time Indiana mounted any sort of momentum on offense when the outcome was still in doubt the officials would flag them for something. They refused to call holding on Iowa...there was a play in particular where Iowa's quarterback rolled out to the right and completed a pass along the sideline after the right tackle literally horsecollar tackled the defensive end.

It isn't just me that feels this way...a lot of sportswriters are on this too. It was all too obvious what was going on yesterday in Iowa City. It made me so mad that I couldn't even watch the Texas or USC games with unbiased eyes because after Florida/Arkansas and Iowa/Indiana I was convinced the conference officials would give the benefit of every doubt to the higher-ranked team. I think a lot of people have the same problem...it is just so hard to trust conference-employed officials when there is so much money at stake for the conference in a given game.

So what is the solution? Pretty simply, actually. Disband conference officiating crews. Instead of having a "a Big 12 crew" or an "SEC crew" make them all national crews that work in regions and are assigned games by the NCAA. They already do it to an extent in college basketball, why not football? It would at least limit the doubt being cast over the fairness of high-stakes conference games.

AMERICAN-STATESMAN -on Gilmer's Curtis Brown

LONGHORNS FOOTBALL

Texas' Curtis Brown delivering at cornerback
By Suzanne Halliburton

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Curtis Brown promised his grandmother back when he was attending Gilmer High School he'd take care of his grades and find a way to college.

Football, as he said, eventually found him. And in a very emphatic way.

Brown graduated from high school a semester early, arriving in Austin in January 2007 as one of the most acclaimed recruits among the Longhorn signees. And he had a leg up on the rest of the pack because he was in Austin in time for a month of spring training.

Yet it took the lanky cornerback more time than initially expected to actually live up to the billing that said he was among the top three cornerback prep prospects in the country.

"It just wasn't my time yet," Brown said earlier this week as he and his Texas teammates prepared for Saturday's game against Oklahoma State.

Brown, mostly because of an injury to a teammate, made his college debut this time a year ago against Oklahoma State. He had the unenviable assignment of covering Cowboys All-American wide receiver Dez Bryant.

The game ended as Brown, camping in the north end zone of Royal-Memorial Stadium, slapped away quarterback Zac Robinson's final futile pass to Bryant, preserving the Longhorns' 28-24 victory.

But nothing has kept Brown out of the starting lineup this year, not even a concussion in August when he ran full-speed into linebacker Emmanuel Acho.

The head injury sidelined him for the last two weeks of preseason camp, but he still held off competition from two of last year's first-team cornerbacks.

"He just needed the reps," said Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. "His confidence is at a high level because he's playing so well."

Brown, the 21-year-old self-confessed late bloomer, has had a nice stretch of games.

In a 16-13 victory over Oklahoma on Oct. 17, he broke up a first-quarter pass in the end zone intended for Sooner wideout Cameron Kenney. OU was forced to settle for a field goal. Brown also forced a fumble later in the game.

In Saturday's 41-7 win at Missouri, Brown blocked a punt just before half.

It was recovered by UT receiver Malcolm Williams for a touchdown.

Statistically, his best game was against Texas Tech, when he registered nine tackles. He's leading the team with 10 pass breakups.

His friends in the secondary call Brown the "Cat."

"It's cause you can't knock him off his feet," said Duane Akina, the Longhorns secondary coach.

"He's been nice to watch. He's a phenomenal athlete, probably one of the most phenomenal I've ever coached."

Akina likened Brown to Nathan Vasher, the school's co-record-holder for career interceptions.

Vasher now plays for the Chicago Bears.

Akina said the players both were known most for their receiving abilities in high school.

Vasher was able to make a quicker transition to safety, then cornerback.

It took Brown a bit longer. He was a cornerback his sophomore year in high school, but played receiver and running back his final two years.

He said only Oklahoma and Texas offered him a scholarship as a defensive back. The dozens of other schools interested in his services wanted him as a receiver.

He decided to stay closer to home, nearer to "M'Dear," his paternal grandmother who raised him as her son since Brown was 6 weeks old.

Brown also is celebrating the birth of his daughter. Alayah, who lives with her mother in Houston, was born Oct. 1, during UT's bye week.

"She knew when to come — when Daddy was off," Brown said.

Meanwhile, he's playing all special teams, while manning the right cornerback spot.

"The one thing the high school coaches told us when we took him is that he's got a good heart," said Texas coach Mack Brown.

"He's going to try and do everything right, and he's done that. And I'm really, really proud of him.

TCU - East Texas Players

In case you were wondering how some East Texas boys were doing at TCU. All are major contributors for the #6 ranked Horned Frogs.

Matthew Tucker (Chapel Hill) is getting more and more PT every week. Averaging close to 5 yards per carry with 3 TDs. TCU rotates 3 backs all game and Tucker cracked the rotation game 1 and has looked very good.

Wayne Daniels (Kilgore) starting at DE, has 3 or 4 sacks already. Daniels has been lights out this year (his 1st as a starter).

Nic Sanders (Kilgore) 4th year as a starter at Corner. Missed a game because of the flu (I think). I've heard some say that Nic Sanders plays the run better than any CB in the country. He was voted the "Hardest Hitter" by the MWC coaches at the preseason Media days.

Luke Shivers (Whitehouse) starting at Fullback. Mainly used as blocking back, but has scored 1 TD this year. Luke doesn't get the ball much but when he does he makes it count. 5 touches 4 TDs at TCU.

Tekerrein Cuba (REL) has started the last few games at FS. The sky is the limit for Cuba and you can tell he is really making strides at FS.

Jason Teague (Carthage) has seen plenty of PT at Corner, even got a few starts when Sanders was sick. Might be the best pure Corner for TCU and he doesn't start. Next year one of the CB spots will be all his.

Corderra Hunter (Longview) started a few games at SS this year. Has played in every game the last few years. Has played all 3 safety positions for the Frogs.

Clarence Leatch (Tatum) backing up AA Jerry Hughes at DE but has played quite a bit, even picking up a sack. If you haven't seen Clarence since his Tatum days you probably wouldn't recognize him. He has got to be close to 250lbs. and a natural at DE. With Hughes moving on Leatch will likely start next year.

Jake Kirkpatrick (REL) first year starter at Center, replaced a guy that got drafted, and he may be better.

Trevius Jones (REL) pretty sure he has gotten in a couple of games this year. Only a RSFrosh. Will get more PT next year.

Ray Burns (DT), Bryant House (DT), and James Dunbar (OT) form Maud are all Redshirting this year.

UT hitting its stride just in time

It seems UT is hitting their stride just in time to take on OSU in Stillwater. I hope Newton gets to play some more at OSU, but we need to continue to get Cody Johnson more and more touches. He is so difficult to bring down, and just doesn't quit running until his rear is on the ground.

Fozzy is also playing well right now. If we can sprinkle in some Newton our running game would really be doing quite well. I want to see some more of DJ Monroe offensively, but I'm glad we're allowing Malcolm Williams to play more again and it looked like the opportunities Chiles did get last night he was really putting out and trying extra hard to capitalize on those limited opportunities.

I think we did very well last night in all three phases. The game at OSU will be hard to win, but I think UT can do it. It's going to be exciting.

Hook 'Em Horns!!!!
