Where is the American flag in Cowboys Stadium?

A small roar is going up in Dallas right now. Cowboys fans are wondering where the American flag is hanging at Cowboys Stadium. They can't find it. The color guard comes out for the national anthem, and a picture of a flag is put up on the mega-super-jumbotron, but there is not a tangible flag to be found. In one event, the national anthem was played, but there was not a flag to be found, and they forgot toe video of the flag on the screens. So people were trying to figure out where the flag was. Again, there is no flag in Cowboys Stadium.

If Jones wants to call the Cowboys "America's Team" he needs to back it up.

If you are going to the next home game, and there is not a flag up yet. I suggest wearing a "Where is the flag, Jerry?" T-shirt. Make one, buy one, have one made, whatever..

The pot is boiling on this one. It may seem a small thing to some, but folks are upset as well they should be.

Have a good one,

Lovin

Cowboys vs. Packers Analysis

Watching and reviewing the Cowboys' most recent game against Green Bay, it appears very much to me a game that could have gone either way, and was not indicative of the final score. However, over the course of the season there seems to be an overall approach to taking on the Cowboys offense that all teams seem to adopt, regardless of what scheme they run.

First, the game itself was decided on only a few factors, but not many. One was the injuries to the secondary, which is when Green Bay began to pull away in the 3rd-4th quarter while picking on Orlando Scandrick. Two, the reviews that Jeff Tripplette flubbed. The third were penalties the Cowboys committed that sunk big plays that could have turned the game.

Clearly in this game, Dallas failed to execute a gameplan that had flummoxed the Eagles. Roy Williams momentum-killing fumble was just the last in several weeks of wide receivers struggling to hold onto the ball. Garrett had bided his time to catch Green Bay blitzing heavily to burn them, but the gamble failed here even if his instincts were correct.

Roy again reared his ugly head in a negative way with GB 3-0 and Dallas in its second drive in the 2nd half. With Roy open down the sideline at the Green Bay 30, Romo threaded a pass into Roy's hands. It banged off his facemask.

Tashard Choice later went up the right seam and caught a splendid pass for a first down inside Green Bay's 30; it's a play that also worked well against the Eagles. The play was called back due to a pick from Jason Witten. The Cowboys were forced to punt.

This sort of snakebitten play was not solely left to the offense. Early in the 2nd quarter cornerback Orlando Scandrick blitzed untouched and got to Rodgers, forcing a fumble and the Cowboys recovered around the 15 yard line. This play was wiped out when Mike Jenkins was called for an illegal contact penalty. Had this play stood, and several other good plays that were wiped out by penalties, there's a good chance Dallas jumps to the lead, and we have a different game altogether.

Aside from this game, I can go back to the Carolina game and see that teams attack the Cowboys offense in a very certain way; they blitz heavily and use more secondary blitzes. Green Bay just employed the same strategy that the Eagles tried, and several before it, with the advantage of a 3-4 defense that seems to fair better in this role.

More to the point, Garrett's strategy to combat these heavy blitzes is to bring in more blockers and try to burn the defense with big plays. At times, like the Eagles game, this strategy has worked. There have been many times, going even back to the 2007 playoff games against the Giants, where the offense bogs down because the few wideouts running patterns can't get open.

More recently, Garrett's strategy will have to take on the aspect that more teams are trying to attack Dallas with Fire Zones and other blitzes that bring pressure while still keeping at least six men in coverage, allowing them to also try and take away Dallas' favorite running lanes, short-circuiting the runs before they get going.

Garrett has tried a variety of screens to take advantage of this approach, and he tried quite a few against Green Bay, but they didn't do much to stop Capers, or anyone this year, to try and bring more guys than Dallas can block, or to overload one side of the line to force Romo's hand before Receivers can get open.

It may come to a point sometime this season where Dallas will not only defeat a team using this approach, but bury them. Until that happens, teams may continue to use Fire Zones to take keep Dallas' offense off the field.

Cowboys vs. Falcons

Figured it was time to jumpstart the board on the Cowboys/Falcons game on Sunday. Maybe give some us a place to post while the game goes on, rather than the ten different threads we had last game.

Comparisons:

For just about every area, these two teams are really very close in terms of their play. Both teams average about the same in PPG on offense. Dallas moves the ball better, and leads the league in YPA on the ground. The Falcons have twice as many three-and-outs on offense, but they make the most of their opportunities in the red zone, where Dallas often have not.

The same can be said for their defenses. Neither team is in the top 20 in defense. The Falcons rank 23rd against the run, 21st against the pass. However, the Falcons have made up for that with 12 takeaways. Dallas only has 4, the fewest in the NFL. The Falcons make the most of their chances; Dallas does not.

Key Matchups

Jason Witten vs. Mike Peterson - The Falcons may struggle if they can't slow down Witten, and Mike Peterson is their best linebacker in coverage. Atlanta likes to keep their safeties two deep, and may need to protect both corners with Brian Williams done for the year.

Miles Austin vs. Chris Houston - Houston is a defensive version of Austin (even down to their last names)- a gifted, athletic player who sometimes struggles with the mental aspect of the game.

Flozell Adams vs. John Abraham - Abraham is iffy against the run, but he allows Atlanta to go with a four man rush. Adams first three games were stellar; his last two were awful. Adams will need to draw some confidence from their last meeting, when Flozell destroyed Abraham repeatedly in a 38-28 win.

Terence Newman vs. Roddy White - White has shown himself to be a top 5 wide receiver. Newman has been noteworthy only in that he seems to lose sight of the ball just has it's passing by his head- and being caught for a big play.

Gerald Sensabaugh vs. Tony Gonzalez - The Cowboys use Sensabaugh to cover tight ends so they can play with one high safety. This also frees up Phillips into mixing which linebackers he sends after the quarterback. However this turns out, the Boys don't want Bradie James covering Gonzalez...James has been awful covering tight ends.

Jay Ratliff vs. Todd McClure - Matt Ryan has been sacked only twice this season. Ratliff has been the Cowboys best defensive player thus far.

Other factors included overexpansion in its second season of 1984 — including the addition of the Tulsa-based Oklahoma Outlaws — and the death of Tampa Bay Bandits owner John Bassett, who had urged league owners to show fiscal restraint.

Trump, who bought the New Jersey Generals from Oklahoma City oilman J. The league never made it that far after its antitrust suit against the NFL produced only a $3 judgment.

After being handed the actual check, which with interest had grown to $3.76, Trump abruptly ended his interview with Tollin, a former USFL employee.

Duncan, who died in February at age 92, joked about the league’s beginnings and his signing of Heisman Trophy winning running back Herschel Walker, one of several stars who joined the league.

"A bunch of guys got together and had a few beers and decided to form this league,” he said.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Michael Crabtree agreed to a six-year contract in the wee hours Wednesday morning after several months of difficult negotiations.

The deal, first reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, was confirmed by 49ers spokesman Bob Lange in a text message to The Associated Press early Wednesday.

Crabtree will get a six-year deal that he can void to five years if he meets undefined performance clauses, a league source told ESPN's Michael Smith.

The former Texas Tech star was the only draft pick who had yet to sign -- and rapper MC Hammer even got involved in finally making this happen.

Crabtree could provide the game-breaking wide receiver threat the 49ers have been lacking, assuming he can quickly learn the offense after missing all of training camp. The 10th pick overall, he also sat out offseason minicamps and organized team activities while recovering from a foot injury, but was a regular presence at the team's training facility.

The 22-year-old Crabtree and his agent, Eugene Parker, sat down with three top 49ers officials Tuesday in an attempt to work through his contract impasse. Crabtree had balked at a long-standing offer of approximately five years and $20 million with a reported $16 million guaranteed, instead seeking money comparable to higher draft picks.

Oakland Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, the No. 7 choice, signed a five-year contract that will guarantee him at least $23.5 million.Jacksonville Jaguars top pick Eugene Monroe, taken eighth overall, signed a five-year, $25 million contract that includes $19 million guaranteed.

Coach Mike Singletary acknowledged last month that the 49ers discussed changing their offer to Crabtree, and team president Jed York said in mid-September that the team hoped for a face-to-face meeting with Crabtree but hadn't heard back from his representatives.

That meeting finally happened Tuesday at an undisclosed spot in the Bay Area away from the team's Santa Clara headquarters. Crabtree and Parker were joined by York, vice president of football operations Paraag Marathe and general manager Scot McCloughan. Hammer, a friend of Parker and Parker client Deion Sanders, was a participant to some degree at the hotel where negotiations took place.

It's not common for a player himself to join such contract talks.

Singletary, whose team leads the NFC West and at 3-1 is off to its best start since 2002, said Monday he would welcome Crabtree whenever he shows up to join the team.

The 49ers had until Nov. 17 to sign Crabtree for him to remain eligible to play this season. The team would have a seven-week window before the 2010 draft to trade Crabtree if he did not sign.

In August, a report surfaced that Crabtree was prepared to sit out all season, re-enter the draft in 2010 and wait for the hefty paycheck he thinks he deserves. ESPN.com quoted Crabtree's cousin and adviser, David Wells, about the possibility of a yearlong holdout. The 49ers then released a statement saying, "In our view, there have been open and positive conversations on both sides."

Crabtree caught 97 passes for 1,165 yards and 19 touchdowns last year during his sophomore season at Texas Tech. He finished his college career with 231 receptions for 3,127 yards and 41 touchdowns.

Have your expectations changed?

Talking with a few friends after the game Sunday, we all had the same reaction to the loss; less anger and more disappointment. After the Giants loss I was mad because we should have won that game, but after Denver, I have come to the realization that all the talk of how the offense would be better by spreading the ball around and how this team was going to take a workmans approach to the game, is going to turn into a .500 season. My expectations are significantly lower. This is not a new sentiment, but I really think the coaching is killing the Cowboys, especially the play calling. They can win with the players they have, although more depth wouldn't hurt, but the coaches do not seem to be getting the most out of their players. I still think letting TO go was the right move, especially since he has not exactly produced much in Buffalo, but we really miss a true deep threat at WR. This looks like one of those teams that can win against anybody, but is not great enough to consistantly win and perform at a high level. I am already looking toward next year.

With all that being said, the two losses were against teams without a blemish on their record, and they both were not over till the final seconds. The defense is improving, despite the late TD given up Sunday. And Felix Jones, IF he is able to stay healthy, brings a lot more to the offense than what they had Sunday. So it is not out of the question that they can still get this thing rolling in the right direction (see Cardinals, Giants of recent SB), but my hope of that happening is growing dimmer each week.

Romo didn't know it was fourth down?

Maybe that's why threw it to Hurd again.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is getting a lot of criticism for throwing consecutive passes to fourth receiver Sam Hurd against Denver standout cornerback Champ Bailey on third and fourth down to end the game in Sunday's 17-10 loss.
Is is possible that Romo didn't know it was fourth down? Following the final incomplete pass to end the Cowboys hopes, a video caught on KDFW Fox-4 shows Romo seemingly telling his linemen to line back up. He then flashes three fingers to one of the game officials. After hearing the response, Romo screams and walks off field. If true, Romo apparently forgot about the spike to stop the clock on second down. When asked about the series of events, coach Wade Phillips didn't know anything about a discrepancy. He said they on the sideline what down it was and any questions would need to be directed at Romo. They may not be until Wednesday or Thursday. Romo is not scheduled to talk to the media until then.

Clarence E.
BREAKING NEWS FROM VALLEY RANCH

BREAKING NEWS: Cowboys Can Rowdy! Take Heart Fans, There is Good News Today.
By Richie Whitt in Dallas Cowboys
Mon., Oct. 5 2009 @ 1:00PM

It was the worst of mascots. It was the best of mascots.
Some news that will surely soften Broncos 17, Cowboys 10.

Would you believe: R.I.P., Rowdy.

Well, the obnoxious, foam, giant-noggin'ed Cowboys' mascot isn't exactly dead. But I heard over the weekend that at least we won't be subjected to his stupid shenanigans any longer at Cowboys Stadium.

I guess we were too distracted by Peasant Passes or JumboJerry or sex in restrooms or go-go dancers on platforms n' poles to notice, but when I started thinking about it, I don't remember seeing Rowdy at the first two games.

You?

Turns out Rowdy - a.k.a. Ted Ovletrea - will still make appearances for the team - pep rallies and hospital visits, etc. - but the mascot will no longer be part of the game-day presentation at home games in Arlington.

My reaction: Hallelujah!

Jody Dean's morning show over at KLUV 98.7 FM has the confirmation.

In short, "Rowdy" was laid off in August, told by the team he couldn't be trusted on the sideline of the new joint. 12 years of waving off perfectly good field goals and revving a 4-wheeler at training camp was more than enough. For crying out loud, the guy thing had a web site devoted to his demise.

But - prepare to cringe - we probably haven't heard the last of Rowdy.

"Next year," he told Dean, "the book will be out."

One down, at least two more to go.

Can Wade and Garrett be too far behind??

Dallas/Denver Review

As usual, I post the notes I took while watching the game. Really, the game basically boils down to a few plays; the offenses looked horrible for both sides (or the defenses were great, who knows) and the game came down to really two plays; Brandon Marshall's catch-n-run and the Anthony Spencer INT for a touchdown that somehow didn't happen. The Dallas defense really should have dominated this game, even more so than Denver's, but when they have a chance to make that drive-killing interception, they can't.

1) The Broncos' defensive gameplan looked remarkably similar to Carolina's; jam up the A and B gaps with blitzes, and force the Cowboys to run wide. Carolina ultimately failed because of Felix Jones, but Denver had no such worries. The Cowboys had some success burning Denver with screens, but eventually went away from it even though Denver kept blitzing. Their outside runs didn't do terribly well when they tried, and eventually they ditched that too.

2) Anthony Spencer, from team MVP to goat of Dallas - If I counted it up, I believe Spencer has probably hit the quarterback more than anybody on the team. He also has let 4 passes go in and out of his hands that were easy interceptions. So far you can count on Spencer to do 2 things: 1) hit the quarterback just after he lets go of the ball, and 2) let passes sail through his hands.

3) Whatever troubles Romo had, Orton was actually worse. Sometimes it pays to be lucky, and that was true in this case; I counted at least 4 times Orton threw a bad pass that should have been picked, but remarkably wasn't.

4) The Dallas receivers just aren't doing well. None are going to hot routes on blitzes. During the 3rd period I saw the two inside receivers run the same route, heading into each other; the same thing happened again on the last play of the game when Hurd and Crayton ran slants into each other. Austin's route into coverage instead of to the sideline got Romo yet another pick. Many times Romo had to wait for receivers even to look his way during blitzes.

5) If referees are going to nitpick the 'defenseless receiver' penalty ( as they did in the NY/KC game), then where were they on the hit to defenseless Roy Williams' breadbasket?

6) The refs started out well, and were pretty spot on for a sloppy first half. During the 2nd half they spent quite a bit of time seeing things that weren't there (Marty B's holding, Tony Scheffler's off. PI).

7) We got our money's worth with Brooking, and he's a valuable upgrade over Zach Thomas.

8) For two games, or defense was terrible, but the offense was hot. For two more, the defense has been very good while the offense is stuck in neutral. This team needs to find a happy medium.

9) Speaking of happy medium, who else thinks that this team is still reeling a bit from the criticism after the Giants game? Pundits shouted for the Cowboys to adopt a more conservative approach and not put the ball in jeopardy. Romo started eating sacks and very rarely fires downfield. Witten is staying in to block. The shifting formations and moving wideouts around to get better matchups are gone. I expect now pundits will want to go back to the way things were.

10) Two aspects of the team are missing that are really want to see more of. First, I think I'd like to see Wade blitz more with the secondary, which seems to work well for every team we face. Second, Dallas needs to start using their tight ends has a focal point of the offense.

Cowboys play calling... :(

I'm a head football coach here in Texas (high school) and I realize us high school guys are not as "smart" as the pros but I have a few comments....

Ok, is it just me or has Jason Garrett become an ego-maniac when it comes to playcalling? It seems like he's trying to be known as some great innovator with his playcalling. Felix Jones, IMO, might be the most explosive back in the game (except Peterson) but he can't get more than 9 touches? I realize he got hurt in the 3rd qtr last night but he has NEVER had more than 9 touches in a game in his career.

Jones has a chance to take it to the house EVERY time he touches the ball...but he seldom touches it.

Last night, when Dallas took over with 1 minute left in the half and were using the 2 minute drill, HE NEVER SAW THE FIELD. Is he not THE GUY you want on the field with a minute left???

On 2 straight plays from the 1 yd line, Garrett calls a fade route???? Dallas has the #1 rushing game in the NFL but we throw 2 fades in a row???

Something has to change.

If Wade Phillips was truly in charge (or had the cajones) he would go down to Garrett on the sideline and TELL HIM to get the ball to their best player....FELIX JONES.

Its sickening to watch.

Cowboys vs. Panthers; Get Back to Attacking Safeties

Cowboys fans rejoiced during the season opener against the Buccaneers when it appeared that Terrell Owens was no longer needed for the offense to pass for big plays. Romo hit Roy Williams, Miles Austin, and Patrick Crayton for big scores, and Romo netted a career best 353 yards passing. Detractors noted that the Cowboys hit big mostly when they went after new starting safety Sabby Piscitelli. Pundits brushed off the numbers, saying mostly that they went against busted coverage.

The home opener against the Giants gave Cowboys critics more than enough ammo to back up remarks about the passing game.

To beat the Panthers, the Cowboys will need to roll out their new wrinkle to the smash route; the 12 Personnel.

Most astute NFL fans know of Dallas' duo of threatening tight ends Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett. Against Tampa Bay, Dallas unveiled their '12 Personnel' package, where both Witten and Bennett line up as the outside receivers, or on the same side. 12 Personnel, when used in this way, is extremely effective because it forces defenses to:

a) Stay in their base scheme
b) Either keep their corners on the tight ends, or force linebackers to cover them one-on-one in space.
c) Count on their safeties to handle the slot receivers.

The advantages become immediately apparent when applied with one of Dallas' favorite plays, the Smash route. The Smash route is not a particular pass pattern; it's a two man route combination designed mainly to attack Cover-2.

To illustrate, you can see the Smash concept at work with 12 Personnel on Roy Williams' 66 yard touchdown reception during the Tampa Bay game:

Tampa Bay/ Dallas Highlights

Dallas deploys in a four wide shotgun; Martellus Bennett is the outside receiver on the short side, with Roy Williams inside him. Witten is split wide on the opposite side, with Crayton in the slot. Before the snap, Williams will motion across the formation and settle next to Crayton in a Trips look.

Tampa Bay appears to add a wrinkle to their normal Cover-2 look; the corner covering Witten will fall back into deep coverage while safety Sabby Piscitelli moves up late to play an underneath zone. The Bucs show blitz with all three linebackers, in an effort to trick Romo into throwing on a hot read.

After the snap, Witten runs a 10 yard hitch, while Patrick Crayton runs a 5 yard Square In, picking up the SAM linebacker that has fallen back into zone coverage. Roy Williams releases on his seam read, running inside the flat defender's zone and finding the opening between the corner and the high safety. Williams' job is to read the coverage and adjust his route to divide the deep coverage. This is also referred to as a Divide route. Romo's job is to read the cornerback and Williams' adjustments, and attempt to 'throw to green'.

Romo has an easy throw to Witten that would have netted the easy first down. Roy Williams makes it a moot point by climbing Piscitelli's zone quickly and has an easy path down the seam when the deep safety reacts too slowly; the rest is eye candy. Had the deep safety overplayed Williams to the outside, the post or go pattern is open. The added advantage of forcing the safeties to adequately cover a receiver, rather than a tight end, attacking the seam is a nightmare for teams that like a Cover-2 or Cover-3 coverage. If the defense goes to a Nickel package to better cover the inside receiver, Dallas can go to a more traditional 2 TE formation or Full House formation and pound away.

Dallas did not use this approach much that I can see during the Giants game that I could see. They still used the Smash concept, but didn't use the added dimension of putting their tight ends wide much. What little passing that was successful didn't use the tight ends much at all; Witten finished with just 33 yards receiving.

Against the Panthers, Dallas may need to return to combining these two concepts to open up passes deep. The Panthers have had trouble rushing the passer, and finding healthy defensive tackles rush four linemen with any effect - forcing safeties to track receivers going deep will not only open up the tight ends, but also open up more yards for a running game that lit a good New York defense on fire.

TO goes silent in Buffalo?

Sullivan: As a leader, T.O. dropped the ball
By Jerry Sullivan

When the Bills signed Terrell Owens, we were told he would be a leader for a young team, a better teammate than we realized, a star who would bring some straight talk and swagger to the locker room.

So I had looked forward to hearing T.O. speak after his first real game as a Bill. And after Monday night's 25-24 loss to the Patriots, a lot of the media were eager to hear what the iconic receiver would say, what comforting words he would offer to his team and fans.

The answer was nothing. Owens pulled the old silent act after Buffalo blew a late 11-point lead in New England. He took a pass. The kind you can't drop.

"You're wasting your time," Owens told a horde of reporters at his locker. "I have nothing to say."

Perhaps T.O. concluded it wasn't in his self-interest to speak. Maybe he had to clear it with those two female advisers, to make certain it didn't compromise his well-crafted public image.

We could only guess how Owens felt about the painful loss, or his own meager contributions to the offense. Maybe he was afraid he might be goaded into griping about the fact that only four #### were thrown in his direction.

Still, it was weak. Owens has sold himself as a personality, a guy who commands people's attention. He got a key to the city. He has his own reality TV show. The reality after Monday's game was that he lacked the decency to stand and face the music after a tough loss.

Leodis McKelvin, the goat, was there to answer questions about his crucial fumble. Donte Whitner was crying, sniffling through his answers. But he was there. Even Aaron Schobel, who is always the first one out the door after games, stopped to take personal blame for not stopping Tom Brady at the end.

Owens? We were wasting our time. What? People are expected to tune into his insipid, self- serving TV show, but talking after a loss is a waste of time?

If you sell yourself as a man of the people, someone with a public forum, you ought to be consistent.

Gee, do you think T.O. would have talked if he had 12 catches, like Randy Moss and Wes Welker? It must have been hard, on a national stage, to be at best the third-best receiver out there.

If Owens had issues with the downfield passing game, he had a point. The Bills never tried to stretch the field. They didn't test the Pats long, or throw medium deep passes down the middle. Alex Van Pelt did a nice job in his first game as coordinator, but he was content to let Trent Edwards work underneath.

The offense was efficient. But 10 of Edwards' 15 completions went to Fred Jackson or the tight ends. Owens and Lee Evans, who earn $15 million a year between them, combined for five catches and 71 yards. Owens had two for 46. The other two throws resulted in a crucial drop and an offensive interference.

Owens was supposed to open things up for other receivers. But Evans had his usual struggles against the Pats: Three catches, 25 yards. Later, Edwards said the Pats had taken away both of his top wideouts.

The Bills must do a better job getting their two stars involved. Evans has now gone 11 regular-season games without a touchdown. He hasn't had a reception of more than 15 yards since Week 12 last season. Still, he didn't utter a peep of complaint. It wasn't the time for it.

This was the time to be a good teammate, a veteran who shows his younger teammates how you act in victory or defeat. When rookies and second-year men are taking the tough questions, when one of your defensive leaders is across the room in tears, a veteran shows how important it is to hang together.

They say Owens is a great teammate. But once the real games began, T.O. wasn't all about the team. He was, as we'd been warned, all about himself.
