848 mile golf course

MELBOURNE (AFP) – The world’s longest golf course, stretching along 1,365 kilometers (848 miles) of desert highway with holes at 18 towns and service stations, is to open in Australia this year, organizers said Tuesday.

The Nullarbor Links, which will span two time zones and measure more than the entire length of Britain, is expected to be completed next month and will host its inaugural tournament on October 22.

“We’re very excited about it. It’s been a long time coming and a lot of effort,” project chairman Don Harrington told AFP.

“This is the longest golf course in the world. It’s unique terrain, there’s something for everybody.”

The course, conceived five years ago “over a couple of beers,” is meant to attract tourists to the Eyre Highway which traverses the desolate Nullarbor Plain and hugs part of Australia’s southern coastline.

Golfers will stop at one roadhouse, play a hole, then drive on to the next tee—100 kilometers down the road in some cases. The par-71 course will take three or four days to complete with each player awarded a certificate.

Each hole will showcase a local attraction, from whale-watching to ancient fossil beds and a working sheep station, and include sights such as the Big Kangaroo statue at Border Village straddling South and Western Australia.

“There’s a lot of history and you can see all of that on a golf course,” Harrington said.

“Both Australian tourists and golfing enthusiasts around the world have shown support for what we’re doing.”

The course was the brainchild of Bob Bongiorno, who was managing a roadhouse at remote Balladonia when he came up with the idea.

Bongiorno, now living in Kalgoorlie at the course’s western end, said he tried hitting a few #### when he first moved into the Outback but got sick of encountering spiders when trying to retrieve them.

There should be no such hazards on the synthetic greens of the Nullarbor Links, although golfers who hit a stray shot into the desert will face a monster sand trap. (Yahoo)

That would be awesome to say you have played that.

Panthers miss District 14-5A golf title by one shot

Click-2-Listen
By Edwin Quarles
The Lufkin Daily News

Thursday, April 09, 2009

Lufkin's boys' golf team fell one shot short of a District 14-5A title Thursday afternoon as The Woodlands' Ryan Kelley holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole to give his team the win.

Lufkin's got solid rounds from all five golfers in the second and final round of the tournament at Huntsville's Raven Nest Golf Club.

Sophomores Michael Phillips (75), Will Griffin (78) and Sam Fidone (78) along with seniors Michael Haney (81) and Chase Webb (81) combined for a team total of 312. The Woodlands shot 307 on the day to beat the Panthers by one shot, 614-613.

"We fought them tooth and nail," Lufkin golf coach Danny Leatherman said. "We were down eight or nine shots at the turn but our guys sucked it up and got back in it. Our guys didn't settle for second and it took a 15-foot birdie on the last hole by their guy that's going to A&M to beat us."

Fidone and Griffin tied for third with two-day totals of 152 and Fidone won third in a playoff.

"All our guys stepped up and played with one of the best teams in the state, a team that will compete for the state tournament title," Leatherman said. "We showed that we could play with them. We showed what we have inside us and it's impressive."

As the second-place team the Panthers will advance to the Class 5A Region II tournament on April 23-24 at Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco. This is the first time for the Panthers to advance to regionals from the Houston-area district.

College Park placed third in the tournament.

Two-day totals for Lufkin were: Fidone 74-78—152; Griffin 74-78—152; Phillips 80-75—155; Webb 76-81—157; and Haney 78-81—159.

Lufkin's "B" team shot 344 in the second round, following a 343 first-round score. Members of the team are Josh Lewis, Jacob Scoggins, Kendall Smith, Chris Fougerousse and Marcus Eubanks.

Hannah Arnold won her second straight district title by making a birdie on the last hole of the tournament to win by one shot.
Hannah posted rounds of 78-75 in very tough conditions at Waterwood national nd Ravensnest Golf Course in Huntsville.

District 14-4A Tournament

This year's District 14-4A golf tournament will begin next Monday, April 6th, with the second round taking place the following monday, April 13. Round one will be held at Piney Woods Country Club in Nacogdoches, and round 2 will be at Garden Valley.

The district championship will fall into the hands of one of four teams: Kilgore, Jacksonville, Whitehouse, or Henderson. Kilgore appears to be the favorite. Jacksonville's key to contending will be solid play from their third and fourth men, because the top two have been consistently shooting in the mid-to-low 70's. Henderson is in the same situation. Whitehouse, perhaps the most balanced of all the teams, has five players who can shoot in the low 80's. However, because they will need to rely on their entire team to play well, they seem to be the dark horse pick and will need above-average play from all players on both days to win. Lindale lost their entire team to graduation, and Nacogdoches lost their top two. These two teams will enjoy their two days out of school.

The individual title will likely be contended by about five players: Chance Fitch from Kilgore, Grant Gresham and Hunter Skelton from Henderson, and Logan Russell and Andy Melvin from Jacksonville. If these guys come to play, they will all shoot 5 or 6 over par at worst and are capable of going very low.

At the Dragon Invitational at Piney Woods in February, the teams finished in this order:
1. Kilgore
2. Jacksonville
3. Henderson
4. Whitehouse
5. Nacogdoches
Lindale did not play

Jacksonville's Russell was individual champion with a 75. Henderson's Grant Gresham shot a 77, and Kilgore had three golfers shoot 80 or better

At Lindale's Garden Valley tournament on March 17, the teams finished in this order:
1. Henderson
2. Whitehouse
3. Jacksonville
4. Lindale
Nacogdoches and Kilgore did not field teams; Kilgore brought only a couple of individual players.

Gresham of Henderson carded a 74, while Skelton of Henderson and Melvin of Jacksonville each shot 75. Chance Fitch of Kilgore carded a 78.

That being said, this is my prediction of how the district will play out:
1. Kilgore
2. Jacksonville/ Henderson
3. Jacksonville/ Henderson
4. Whitehouse
5. Nacogdoches
6. Lindale

scores of the 3rd and 4th players from Jax and Henderson will determine who takes second. If they do not have solid scores, then add Whitehouse to the hunt.

This should help everyone know what's going on in the realm of 14-4A golf. Not much is posted about golf on this site, so I did the best I could to gather information and keep everyone up-to-date about their school's golfers. I hope this helps. If anyone knows any more information about these schools' golfers please don't hesitate to add to this.

Pine Tree Boys district

This district in golf has to be very tough this year. Not only do you have Pine Tree who has been to regionals for at least 6 year in a row, throw in Longview, Tex. High, Hallsville, Sulphur Springs, Marshall, Mt. Pleasant and you have some schools that can play some golf. This will have to be just as tough as those Metroplex districts with Highland Park, Frisco, and Mc Kinney

Tiger's caddy is pretty mouthy for a guy who carries a bag

By Jay Busbee

Seems Steve Williams has gotten a wee bit too comfortable basking in the reflected glory of his boss.

Over the weekend, Williams, who's the caddy for one Tiger Woods, made headlines when he told the The Guardian that "I wouldn't call Mickelson a great player, because I hate the -----"

What did he call Phil? Well, I don't believe I can actually say it here. But let's put it this way -- you know what hurts? When you're sewing, and you #### your finger with the needle. Yeah. The word's in there. And no, Williams didn't call Mickelson a "finger."

Williams also recounted an anecdote from 2008 at Torrey Pines -- or maybe it was 2002 at Bethpage, Williams was a little uncertain on the details -- regarding a fan heckling Mickelson when Phil and Tiger were paired up. As Williams recalls, the fan shouted for Mickelson's attention. When Phil turned around, the fan hollered, "Nice ----" ... hmmm. Let's put it this way. You know when you hit somebody, and then they hit you back, and it's called "tit-for-tat"? Yeah, the word's in there. And no, the guy didn't say Phil had "nice tats."

Mickelson's crew quickly shot back with a statement: "After seeing Steve Williams' comments all I could think of was how lucky I am to have a class act like Bones (Mickelson's caddy Jim MacKay) on my bag and representing me." Mickelson's team also refuted the "nice tats" story, saying it was about a European Tour player (my guess: Colin Montgomerie), not Mickelson.

After the article ran, the Star-Times sought out Williams for clarification. He owned up to his comments, and offered up this gem: "I don't particularly like the guy myself. He pays me no respect at all and hence I don't pay him any respect." Dude. You're the caddy. He's the talent. Nobody in the history of the world ever tuned in to a golf tournament to watch the caddies at work. Perspective, fella.

(It'll be interesting to see how His Tigerness handles this, considering he reportedly fired his previous caddy, Fluff Cowan, for carving out too high of a public profile.)

I can think of only one way to settle this: Caddy Cage Match. Lock Williams and Bones in a steel cage on the 17th at Sawgrass and let 'em go at it. Come on, tell me you wouldn't rather watch that than yet another installment of the Greater Greensboro Open.

And if that doesn't work, somebody remind Williams who's the player and who's the hired help.

Link to story

John Daly

Posted Oct 29th 2008 4:45PM by Ryan Wilson (author feed)

For most golf fans, the 2008 PGA Tour season ended with last month's Tour Championship. (Or, more realistically, the Ryder Cup since the FedEx Cup is basically the unofficial start to the silly season.) Which means that there's not much to talk about until January's Mercedes Championship, or until Tiger Woods decides to tee it up again.

That was the case until about an hour ago, anyway. Thanks to alert FanHouse reader Heather we've learned that John Daly, the Joe Six-Pack of professional sports, has been cuffed, stuffed, poured into an orange jumpsuit and detained.

According to News-Record.com, Daly was held in custody Sunday after police said he was drunk off his arse in a Winston-Salem, NC restaurant. And as if it needs clarification, yeah, it was a Hooters. (Inveterate FanHouse blogger, Winston-Salem-area local, and Hootes regular Will Brinson somehow wasn't on the scene.)
Police officers were called at 2:17 a.m. to the Hooters at 120 Hanes Square Circle on a medical call. When officers arrived, Daly, who had earlier lost consciousness, was being treated by EMS.

Daly "appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative," police stated in a news release. Daly repeatedly refused to be escorted to the hospital and was eventually asked to leave the restaurant by workers there.
If this weren't so depressing it would be hilarious. But Daly is 42 years old, not 21, and he has a long history of substance abuse, often played out in public.

Daly spent the night in the can to sober up and was later released. No idea where he goes from here; he's still without his PGA Tour card and he's mentioned playing on the European Tour in 2009. I could climb up on my soapbox and give my "you're going to drink yourself to death" speech, but I'm pretty sure Big John's heard that one a time or 50.

Of course, if the professional golf thing does eventually fall through (which optimistically assumes it already hasn't), there's always the circus. It's good to have a fallback plan, I suppose.

Arresting ImagesForsyth County Sheriff's Office, AP47 photos John Daly: The golfer was taken into custody Oct. 26, 2008, by Winston-Salem police after he was found drunk outside a Hooters restaurant. Officers said Daly "appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative."

________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________

What's really sad, this happened at a sponsors restaurant. I think he's become a bigger joke than Mike Tyson.

Tiger won with torn ligament and 2 fractures

Tiger won US Open with torn ligament, 2 fractures

By DOUG FERGUSON
AP Golf Writer

Tiger Woods walked tenderly out of Torrey Pines with a U.S. Open trophy he was destined to win on a left leg worse than anyone imagined. A group of children called out to him and Woods looked over and waved. It turned out to be a most symbolic gesture. So long, Tiger. See you next year.

Woods revealed Wednesday he has been playing for at least 10 months with a torn ligament in his left knee, and that he suffered a double stress fracture in his left leg two weeks before the U.S. Open. He said he will have season-ending surgery, knocking him out of the final two majors and the Ryder Cup.

"Now, it is clear that the right thing to do is to listen to my doctors, follow through with this surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee," Woods said on his Web site.

He sure wasn't listening to doctors by playing the U.S. Open, a victory that now looks even more impressive.

Out of competition for two months because of April 15 surgery to clean out cartilage in his left knee, he suffered a double stress fracture in his left tibia two weeks before the U.S. Open.

Hank Haney, his swing coach, was with him in Florida when doctors told Woods the preferred treatment was three weeks on crutches, followed by three weeks of rest.

According to Haney, Woods looked at the doctor and said: "I'm playing the U.S. Open, and I'm going to win."

"And then he started putting on his shoes," Haney recalled. "He looked at me and said, 'Come on, Hank. We'll just putt today.' Every night, I kept thinking there was no chance he's going to play. He had to stop in his tracks for 30 seconds walking from the dining room table to the refrigerator.

"He was not going to miss the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. There just wasn't any discussion."

And it was a U.S. Open that will be talked about for years.

Despite a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a double stress fracture, Woods managed to win a major that required five days of flinching, grimacing and a long list of spectacular shots that have defined his career.

He went 91 holes on a leg that got worse with each day, finally defeating Rocco Mediate on the 19th hole of a playoff.

"When I talk about golf, he doesn't count," Mediate said Monday after the playoff. "He's not normal."

Woods, 32, did not say when he would have surgery, but he canceled a clinic that was scheduled for Tuesday at Comerica Park in Detroit. Haney said the typical recovery is six to eight months. This will be Woods' third surgery in five years on his left knee.

"There will be debate whether he rushed back for the U.S. Open," said Mark Steinberg, his agent at IMG. "But I don't think there will be any debate that he rushes back from his next surgery. He won't need to. Augusta is in April. And if things go according to plan, he'll be able to play an event or two or three."

Woods first went to Haney toward the end of 2002 to overhaul a violent swing that was putting enormous pressure on his left knee. Haney suspects the pain has been increasing, and Woods stopped hitting balls after his rounds at last year's British Open.

"He's been playing way less than 100 percent for a long, long, time," Haney said. "It has limited him a lot in practice. He's going to come back better than he's ever been."

Woods was already plenty good, with 65 victories that rank third all-time on the PGA Tour, and 14 professional majors that are second only to the record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus. This is the 500th week Woods has been ranked No. 1 in the world.

Even in his abbreviated 2008 season, he won five of seven tournaments worldwide. Dating to the discovery of the torn ACL, Woods won nine of 12 tournaments, including two majors, and never finished lower than fifth.

"While I am obviously disappointed to have to miss the remainder of the season, I have to do the right thing for my long-term health and look forward to returning to competitive golf when my doctors agree that my knee is sufficiently healthy," Woods said. "My doctors assure me with the proper rehabilitation and training, the knee will be strong and there will be no long-term effects."

Woods will miss a major for the first time in his career - the British Open next month at Royal Birkdale and the PGA Championship, where Woods is the two-time defending champion, in August at Oakland Hills in Michigan.

"Tiger is an enormous attraction, there's no denying that," Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson said. "But the Open Championship has had many exciting finishes which Tiger has not been part of, and I'm sure there will be more. It's very sad. We're very sorry that he's succumbed to the injury and he won't be competing in the Open.

"We hope he has the speediest recovery."

Woods also will miss the Ryder Cup in September, meaning the ninth player in the U.S. standings will qualify for the team. Coincidentally, Woods had mathematically clinched a spot on the team by winning the U.S. Open.

"We sent him flowers for winning the U.S. Open. Now I wish I had put in a note of condolences," U.S. captain Paul Azinger quipped. "But this is not about Tiger and the Ryder Cup. It's about Tiger getting better and his march to history."

The majors won't miss Woods nearly as much as the PGA Tour - and the networks that televise it - especially in the second year of the FedEx Cup, which Woods won in a landslide last year.

He still might be leading the points race in August leading to the playoffs. Even with Woods no longer playing the rest of the year, he will keep his spot in the playoff events for which he is eligible.

"Tiger is our tour," Kenny Perry said from the Travelers Championship, which starts Thursday at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. "When you lose your star player, it definitely hurts."

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said his concern was for Woods' health and well being.

"We wish him the best toward a speedy recovery," he said.

Woods is private about his health and personal life, never more so than at the just-completed U.S. Open. He didn't say anything about the torn ACL or the stress fractures, and wouldn't say how he was treating it, only that it was more sore as the week went on.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was when the injury first happened.

Woods said he tore the ACL while jogging at home after the British Open last July. He played on, going on a streak that included seven consecutive victories, including Dubai Desert Classic in Europe and his Target World Challenge, an unofficial event.

He did not play overseas late last year for the first time since 2003, hopeful that rest could allow him to play more this year. But the pain intensified through the Masters, where he finished second, and Woods said the cartilage damage developed from the ACL injury.

He bypassed surgery on the torn ligament April 15, hopeful that by cleaning out the cartilage he could make it through the year. What he didn't anticipate were the stress fractures as he tried to get ready for the Memorial.

"The stress fractures that were discovered just prior to the tournament unfortunately prevented me from participating and had a huge impact on the timing for my return," Woods said. "I was determined, though, to do everything and anything in my power to play in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, which is a course that is close to where I grew up and holds many special memories for me."

Woods won for the eighth time at the public golf course in San Diego - a U.S. Open, a record six times at the Buick Invitational, and a Junior World Championship as a teenager.

He called his U.S. Open victory "probably the best ever."

On Wednesday, he explained why.
___________________________________________________________
Love him or hate him, this guy is amazing!!

Tigers win

Ok before everyone on this message board bashes me, just hear me out.

As the media let everyone know constantly, Tigers knee was in agonizing pain all week right? Well it seemed to me it was only bothering him when he hit an errant shot. It looked perfectly fine when he was draining eagles from everywhere and he was running and hoping around on that ( bum ) knee. Personally i have had knee surgery similar to his and played in a basketball game 2 weeks later? No one recognizes when football players get their knee scoped and gets back out on the field a couple weeks later with no problems at all. Tiger is no doubt in my mind the best of all time. However, i dont want this to qualify as the best golf triumph of all time as espn is saying because he had a ( hurt ) knee. If he would have lost it would have been all because the knee, while now thathe won its thegreastest win ever? either way you look at it the media wins. You have to give credit where credit is due, he deserves it all, but i got so tired this week of hearing johnny miller say after every tee shot: " oh he must bein agonizing pain after that shot" it really got old fast as i knew going in that the knee would be all that was talked about.

In conclusion, Tiger is still the best, Rocco gave it up. But the knee was just a big fat excuse to me that the media created for him. Did Tiger ever complain about the knee during the tournament? i didnt hear it, but my bet is he just viewed it as a distraction and dealt with it and preceded to play the tournament.

This was by far the best U.S Open i have watched, but also the worst because all the attention was on Tigers knee situation. It disgusted me. But congrats to tiger on another great win. The media needs to stop ruining a great sporting event with their lousy excuses on why tiger might not win

Gladewater opened there new nine last week, a little to early in my opinion, but it will be one of the most challenging courses in east texas . When the cart paths are finished and the fairways are filled in it will be more fun but all in all for the money it was very well worth it.

Today's Truths will be a potpourri, touching on my favorite topic, the NFL, and my favorite passion, HBO's "The Wire." But before we get to any of that, I have to share my thoughts on the "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley" controversy engulfing the Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman.

Staying quiet is the most sensible play for Tiger Woods. ( / Getty Images)
10. Despite Tiger's insistence — speaking through his agent — that Tilghman's inappropriate comments were a non-issue, the Golf Channel did the right thing suspending her for two weeks.

Al Sharpton compared Tilghman's on-air remarks to Don Imus's "nappy-headed ho" controversy. Sharpton, as is normally the case, is wrong.

What Tilghman did, despite her 12-year friendship with Woods, was much worse than what Imus did. Imus, a radio shock jock known for crude attempts at humor, cracked a bad joke on a morning radio show. Tilghman is an anchor on the Golf Channel. No one expects her to be racy, controversial or stupid.

Also, Tilghman can't argue that she picked up the notion of "lynching Tiger in a back alley" from black popular culture. She came up with that nonsense all on her own.

Do I think Tilghman is some bigot extremist? No. I think she's incredibly stupid and perhaps unqualified for her job. She's in good mixed company in that category.

Should she be fired? No. She made a mistake, apologized to Woods privately and publicly and should be granted the opportunity to rebound. We all make mistakes. A decade ago, I screwed up in a New England press box, cracked a joke about Drew Bledsoe that made me appear homophobic. I apologized, sat out a two-week suspension and moved on.

It is possible for people to learn from their mistakes. There is nothing positive to be gained from throwing a gigantic pity party for Tilghman or trying to bury her.

What should we make of Tiger Woods' decision to avoid dealing with this controversy publicly and personally? We, the media, make it too costly for public figures to express their honest feelings. We can't handle the truth. Tiger is best served saying as little as possible.

Can you believe Al Sharpton would grab on to this?! He NEVER stirs anyhting up!

(from vnboards.ign.com, posted 8/11/07)

How would people react? He's poised to capture his 13th major tomorrow, chasing 18 career majors set by all time leader Jack Nicklaus. In light of this, one considers Gary Player's remarks earlier this year that steroids are now being used by several (I believe 10) unnamed person's in golf, and that it is currently not against any rules to use steroids, HGH, or any sort of supplement.

If it came out tomorrow that Tiger was using steroids and/or HGH, even though it technically violates no rules, would it forever taint his records? I'm not insinuating that Tiger indeed is or has used any performance enhancing drugs, but I'm trying to figure out what people's reactions would be given the Barry Bond's hubbub (who also has never actually been found to be using any sort of performance enhancers).

Would Tiger still be a hero, and Bonds a villian, or would people change their tune?

Ballesteros retires after failed try on Champions Tour
ESPN.com news services

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland -- Seve Ballesteros, a five-time major championship winner, announced his retirement from golf on Monday.

Seve Ballesteros is one of only 18 golfers to win at least five major titles as a professional and is tied for fourth on the list of majors won by players not born in the United States.
Name Majors
Gary Player 9
Harry Vardon 7
Nick Faldo 6
Seve Ballesteros 5
James Braid 5
John H. Taylor 5
Peter Thomson 5

"This has been the most difficult decision of my life," Ballesteros, who won the British Open three times and the Masters twice, said at a news conference at the British Open.

The Spainard, who turned 50 in April, has not been a force in golf for the last 10 years as he has coped with back injuries.

Ballesteros underwent hospital tests recently over a minor heart scare. He said he had made up his mind to retire only after a failed attempt to play on the seniors' Champions Tour in the United States this year.

"For several months there was something confusing inside. It was an internal fight -- my head said I should retire. I kept saying that over and over," he said.

"My heart kept telling me it would be better to keep playing and compete. So it was difficult for quite a while. "Finally, I decided to go to try on the Champions Tour. So I went there and played one tournament and then I came back. That really made me think ... I should retire." I don't have the desire any longer. I have worked very hard from morning to night and put all my energy and effort into the game, focused 100 percent and I felt that was enough. I have a number of good years left and I'd rather spend time now with my three children and my companies and friends."

Ballesteros did for Europe what Arnold Palmer did for American golf a generation earlier. He was a swashbuckler on the course, a combination of power and amazing imagination. He won one of his three British Open titles by playing a shot from the car park (a temporary parking lot), and perhaps his greatest shot was a 3-wood from a bunker on the final hole of the Ryder Cup in 1983, the first time Europe had a chance to beat the U.S. team.

Inspired by his fierce style, Europe closed the gap on the United States in the matches until winning for the first time in 1985, and dominating ever since. One of those wins came in 1997 at Valderrama, with Ballesteros as the captain.

He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1999.

Ballesteros said he chose Carnoustie to make the announcement because he made his British Open debut there 32 years ago.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Man, I'm getting old!!!! It seems like yesterday that he came flying thru tournaments with a style that captivated the audiences.
Phil Mickelson drops another tourney on last hole - Scottish Open

Mickelson bogeys twice on 18th; Havret wins Scottish in playoff
Associated Press

LUSS, Scotland -- This time, Phil Mickelson got a do-over after hitting a wayward tee shot at the 72nd hole.

The next one was even worse.

A faulty driver cost Lefty his first European Tour win, as France's Gregory Havret rallied to win the Scottish Open on the first playoff hole Sunday.

Not exactly the sort of finish Mickelson wanted heading to the British Open, which begins Thursday at Carnoustie, about a two-hour drive away.

He's still trying to erase the memory of that U.S. Open meltdown at Winged Foot 13 months ago, where a terrible drive on the 72nd hole led to a double-bogey -- and left him one stroke behind winner Geoff Ogilvy.

"I really struggled off the tee and the back nine was a fight for me," said Mickelson, who bogeyed three of his last five holes at Loch Lomond, including the 18th twice.

Havret qualified for his first major, clinching the win with an up-and-down from a greenside bunker. He sank a 6-footer for par in the playoff, then was doused with champagne by countryman Thomas Levet. "I was disappointed but I knew I had another chance, especially on a course like this that I love so much," he said.

With a one-stroke lead going to the final hole of regulation, Mickelson drove into thick rough along the right side of the fairway. He needed a chip shot and two putts for bogey, while Havret got down in two from 15 feet to force the playoff, both players at 14-under 270 as they headed back to the tee box at 18.

Mickelson's redo drive plopped into the shin-high reeds along the water on the left side of the fairway, forcing him to hit an awkward shot that skidded sideways back into the fairway. His third shot wound up on the fringe at the back of the green, leading to another bogey.

"I just tried to make a good swing and blocked it left," Mickelson said. "I hit a good shot out of the swamp, but I hit the third shot way too hard."

Mickelson, who shot a 2-under 69 in the final round, also bogeyed the 14th and 16th holes in regulation. He bounced back with birdies at the 15th and 17th.

"Greg played very solid golf and I played very erratic golf," Mickelson said. "I made birdies and bogeys and he just played steady with solid pars and ultimately that won out in the playoff because he was just much more consistent."

Ernie Els (65) finished one shot back at 271, taking third with a 40-foot birdie on the final hole. It was his fourth straight birdie on the 18th.

Luke Donald (64), Richard Sterne (64), Pelle Edberg (66) and Louis Oosthuizen (68) tied for fourth at 273.

Mickelson, whose only victory abroad was in the 1993 Perrier Open in Paris, a second-tier event, began the day with a one-stroke lead. He stayed in front until the 14th hole, when his bogey combined with Havret's birdie left them tied for the lead.

Havret closed with a 68.

"When Greg plays solid like that," Mickelson said, "not only does he deserve to win, but he makes himself very tough to beat."

Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

Can you say, "Play it again, Sam." ... is mean "Phil plays it again."

Tiger comes up short for 2nd major in arow

An Angel wins a devilish U.S. Open
By DOUG FERGUSON, AP Golf Writer
June 17, 2007

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) -- Unlikely champion. Familiar scenario.

Angel Cabrera hit all the right shots to hold off Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by a stroke on a Sunday of survival at the U.S. Open, shooting a 1-under-par 69 at brutal Oakmont and giving Argentina its first major championship in 40 years.

And for the second straight major, Woods played in the final group and couldn't deliver in the clutch.

Woods squandered birdie chances with his wedge and his putter, and Furyk paid for a risky choice of driver on the 306-yard 17th hole and fell out of the lead with a bogey.

That left Cabrera as the winner, and yes, he signed for the right score.

"It is very difficult to describe at the moment," an elated Cabrera said. "Probably tomorrow, when I wake up with this trophy beside me, I will realize I won the U.S. Open."

Cabrera made his share of mistakes -- everyone did on this brutally tough course outside Pittsburgh -- but he overcame late bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes with a perfect tee shot and a par that gave him the victory.

Even so, this major will be remembered for gaffes by the guys chasing him.

Woods, a runner-up to unheralded Zach Johnson at the Masters, played the final 32 holes at Oakmont with only one birdie. He missed a birdie putt from 6 feet on the 13th, and the only clutch putts he made on the back nine were for par.

"He put a lot of pressure on Jim and I, and we didn't get it done," said Woods, who closed with a 72 and extended his dubious streak of never winning a major when he wasn't leading going into the final round.

Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open champion who grew up in western Pennsylvania, ran off three straight birdies on the back nine and was tied for the lead when he opted to hit driver on the 17th, where the tees were moved up. He hit so far and enough left that he had no angle to the pin, and the lie was so deep that he didn't even reach the green. His 8-foot par putt caught the lip and spun away.

Needing birdie on the final hole, Furyk dropped the club after contact, and his long putt never had a chance.

Cabrera, who had two of just eight sub-par rounds in the tournament and finished at 5-over 285, was in the clubhouse watching two of the best players in golf try to catch him.

As poorly as Woods hit the ball in the final round, he only needed one birdie over his final three holes to force a playoff. Woods hit 3-wood off the 17th tee into a deep bunker, but he couldn't keep it on the green and had to make a 7-footer for par.

His tee shot on the 18th looked good when it left his club, but hopped along the line of first cut and deep rough, and his approach ran some 30 feet by the flag. His birdie putt was just long and right, and Woods again was the last man to leave the 18th green at a major, no trophy in hand.

Cabrera might not have been the winner anyone expected, especially at Oakmont, which has produced U.S. Open champions of the highest caliber. But he earned his victory against the best.

Cabrera delivered a 1-2-3 knockout during a difficult week. A birdie on his final hole Friday caused second-ranked Phil Mickelson to miss the cut in a major for the first time in eight years, and he was even stronger down the stretch with Woods and Furyk, No. 1 and No. 3 in the world, both poised to catch him.

He blew a chance to win the esteemed BMW Championship in Europe last month by topping a tee shot on the back nine, and Cabrera showed signs of a struggle late in the afternoon when he three-putted for bogey on the 16th and missed the 17th green with a wedge from the fairway to drop into a tie for the lead with Furyk.

"He just kept himself calm," caddie Eddie Gardino said. "He might go and win the British Open, because he knows he can do it."

Furyk went 70-70 on the weekend, and still had to settle for another silver medal for finishing tied for second. A year ago, he missed a 6-foot par putt on the final hole at Winged Foot and finished one shot behind Geoff Ogilvy.

"I had a lot of opportunities," Furyk said. "It just didn't work out."

Aaron Baddeley, who had a two-shot lead over Woods going into the final round, three-putted from 8 feet for triple bogey on the opening hole and wound up with an 80.

It was the third straight year no one broke par at the U.S. Open, the longest streak in 46 years.

Cabrera traded birdies and bogeys along the front nine, most notably a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole that played 300 yards with the back tee and back pin. He looked as though he might pull away on the back, using his power for short birdies on the 11th and 15th.

Furyk finally stumbled with careless shots on the 11th and 12th, only to run off three straight birdies to get back in the game.

Woods, the best closer in golf, was a mystery.

He couldn't make a timely putt at the Masters. He couldn't find his swing at Oakmont.
...............................................................................

???????????????????????????? If I was married to a great looking Swedish model, I'd probably be distracted too. I doubt that's the reason, but for the 2nd major in arow??? Just a slight stumble on Tiger's road of life. He'll catch Nicklaus with plenty of "golf life" left.

Daly says wife attacked him

Daly says wife attacked him with knife By TERESA M. WALKER, Associated Press Writer
51 minutes ago

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - John Daly told authorities his wife tried stab him with a steak knife, and the golfer had red marks on his cheeks when he showed up to play Friday on the course where he lives.

Daly called police about 6 a.m. on Friday, Shelby County Sheriff's department spokesman Steve Shular said. When deputies arrived, wife Sherrie and the couple's children were not there. Deputies could not find the knife he claimed she used.

Daly is competing this week in the Stanford St. Jude Championship on a sponsor's exemption. He was tied for eighth after the first round in which he had a triple bogey and rebounded with five straight birdies.

He did not speak with reporters, but issued a statement saying he was the "victim of an assault by my wife."

"I filed a complaint with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. They are investigating, and I'll have no further comment on the matter while they pursue their investigation. My only concern at this point is for the safety of my children and myself," the statement said.

Daly also said he was working with local authorities and tour security for protection. He had two bodyguards with him through his round, and he went from a tie for eighth to a tie for 58th with a 4-over 74 that featured two double bogeys, five bogeys and five birdies.

He did not speak to reporters after finishing his round, which should let him play into the weekend for only the fourth time in 12 events this year.

No charges had been filed Friday afternoon, and it will be Daly's decision whether he wants that to happen, Shular said.

The 41-year-old golfer and his wife argued last night at a restaurant near the golf course, he told deputies.

Daly has won two majors — the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open — but his play has been overshadowed by two trips to alcohol rehab, outrageous tales of gambling losses, trashed hotel rooms and suspensions.

Daly has struggled this season. Their son, John Patrick, was born a week before she and her parents were indicted in Mississippi on charges stemming from what authorities said was a drug ring and an illegal gambling operation.

Sherrie Daly pleaded guilty in November 2004 to a charge of conspiracy to structure a transaction to evade the reporting requirement. She began serving a five-month sentence in January 2006, then filed for divorce in Shelby County on Oct. 17, 2006.

Daly filed himself a day later, then said a month later that things were on hold. Shular said police had been called to the home only once before for a false alarm in December and that Sherrie Daly had listed a Collierville address for herself.

His autobiography — "My Life In & Out of the Rough" — details his gambling and drinking addiction with one chapter devoted to his three former wives that was titled, "All My Exes Wear Rolexes."

Sorenstam says Wie has no class

Wie's wrist fuels spat with Sorenstam before LPGA Champs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A row between the world's two best known women golfers is raising the temperature for this week's LPGA Championship, with Annika Sorenstam saying Michelle Wie lacked class in dealing with a wrist injury.

Former world number one Sorenstam took issue with a decision by teenager Wie to withdraw from a tournament last week when she was 14 over par, citing a wrist injury, only to practice two days later.

"I just feel there's a little bit of a lack of respect and class just to leave a tournament like that and then come out and practice here," Sorenstam told a news conference.

Wie was 16 holes into the opening round of last week's tournament in North Carolina week when she pulled out, complaining of a wrist injury that had kept her from playing since January.

Two days later, the 17-year-old, who recently graduated from high school, was practicing at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Maryland, the site of the LPGA Championship starting on Thursday.

Wie, who is not a member of the women's tour and has played courtesy of sponsors' exemptions, including in men's events, refused to back down.

"I don't think I need to apologize for anything," she said. "I just have to take care of my body and mover forward and only think of positive things."

Adding intrigue to her withdrawal was an LPGA rule that any non-member who shoots 88 or worse in a round is barred from the tour for the rest of the season. Wie was two bogeys away from that ignominious score.

"I don't think about 88," she said. "I mean, that's just ridiculous."

Wie's troubles were compounded when her playing partners in a pro-am event on Monday at Bulle Rock lodged a complaint, prompting LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens to meet with Wie's father, B.J., and agent, Greg Nared.

Although the nature of the dispute was unclear, Wie was adamant she had been cooperative with her playing partners.

"I think it was very insulting because I tried my best," she said.

Wie, who earned close to $20 million in 2006 from endorsements, earnings and appearance money overseas, has struggled since tying for fifth place at last year's LPGA Championship

Please Help!!!!

I just recently attended a regional golf tournament at Oak Hurst in Bullard to support my Alma Mata. I have consistently attended golf outings over the years and have become increasingly frustrated as I have seen zero progress in knowledge of the game but most importantly etiquette. Several times I observed coaches chatting and driving the carts around disturbing kids that are trying to concentrate. It was then that I realized it was no wonder these kids will not mark their ball, take the flag out of the hole, keep a respectable distance from the hole or their playing partner, hit in turn (both on the tee and through the green). I felt frustrated mostly because I realize how hard many of these kids work on their sport. Harder that any other athlete in any other sport. Then they have to go walk 6 hour rounds, play through coaches talking loudly about what defense they are going to run next year, hope someone doesn't mistakenly hit or pick up their ball, and constantly explain rules, proper drop procedures, and help these kids count how many times they hit it on a particular hole because they will not or can not do it their selves. I personally don't know why they even give these coaches carts. They should just stay at the club house and they can shoot the breeze as much as they want. I mean after all it's not like one of these guys could actually make a ruling if they had to. If a kid ask one of these guys about where to drop their ball after going in a lateral hazard they would probably yell "FIRST DOWN". If I was an administrator, and couldn't find someone in the school (or community) that could at least teach these kids a little etiquette, then quiet simply we would not have a golf team. It's called pride and I guarantee the same coaches preach on it all through football season. Now I realize that golf does'nt generate any revenue for the school but neither does math, and we at least put teachers in the class room that can teach the kids to add. (however after seeing 65,114, I'm not sure about that anymore)
