Brock Lesnar

Dana White was supposed to spend this week promoting his Ultimate Fighting Championship 106 card at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It was to star his biggest box office draw, heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Instead White flew Tuesday to Bismarck, N.D., showed up at the local hospital and found Lesnar, in heavy post-op sedation, while family and friends fretted about the future.

Lesnar had surgery to help solve a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract that helped cause the postponement of Saturday’s fight against Shane Carwin and left his long-term future in doubt.

“The family was worried big time, they were freaking out,” White, the UFC president, said Wednesday. “Brock was in big pain, he was hurting.

“We don’t know if he’ll ever fight again.”

White cautioned that things could still go either way. He could fight. He could not. No one knows at this point. Lesnar was resting Wednesday at his home in Alexandria, Minn. and was scheduled to visit the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. early next week for a battery of tests.

“He had a hole in his intestine,” White said. “The (stuff) was leaking into his stomach. That’s what was causing him so much pain. That and he had abscesses.

“The doctor told him he hasn’t been right for a year. His immune system has been trying to fight this thing and that’s why he was susceptible to getting sick.”

That likely explains Lesnar’s original diagnosis of mono. He had been weakened to the point that he was unable to train for the Carwin fight for much of October. That prompted the original delay in the fight. Then last week, the intestinal problem flamed up and Lesnar was hospitalized.

“We’ll find out more next week,” White said. “We’re going to send him to the Mayo Clinic for a couple of days. I don’t know what to say. It’s looking better now than last week, but what that means, I don’t know.”

White said no decision would be made on setting up an interim heavyweight championship until he knew how long Lesnar might be out.

at first I thought he was just ducking carwin like tito tried to duck chuck for years, but now it sounds serious...

So the most anticipated fight in a long time will more than likely be signed in the next few weeks. Who do you like in this fight.

Based on common opponets you might think Pac has the edge. Who knows, Floyd didn't look rusty against Juan Manuel by any means.

I think Floyd is the best fighter of the past 10 years, no one has accomplished more in my opinion. Pac no doubt is the best fighter the past 2-3 years. Can't wait for it to happen.

Pac-Man defeats Cotto

Pac-Man destroyed a legitimate Welterweight Champion in Miguel Cotto. This gives him 7 titles in 7 different weight divisions. I know the title picture is watered down with all of the belts in each class, but to start at 106 pounds and 13 years later win a title at 145 that is saying something. Manny will be ranked in the top 10 all time greatest boxers. What do you guys think?

R.I.P. Alexis Argüello

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — Former world boxing great and Managua Mayor Alexis Arguello was found dead at his home Wednesday, prompting three days of official mourning for a rising star of the Sandinista party who once bitterly opposed the leftist movement.

Coroners were conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Sandinista Party Radio Ya and other local media were reporting it appeared to be a suicide. The La Prensa newspaper reported that Arguello — elected mayor of Nicaragua's capital last year — was found with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Arguello had spoken publicly of his struggle with depression, alcohol and drug use.

Presidential spokeswoman and first lady Rosario Murillo called Arguello "an example of forgiveness and reconciliation."

When Sandinista revolutionaries seized Arguello's bank accounts and homes in Managua in the 1980s, the boxer threw his support behind U.S.-backed Contra rebels and did not return to live in Nicaragua until after the 1990 electoral defeat of President Daniel Ortega.

Ortega called in 2005 to offer Arguello a spot on the Sandinista ticket as vice-mayor of Managua. He accepted and won. Relying heavily on his fame as a boxer, he went on to win November's mayoral election, though opponents alleged the vote was fraudulent.

On Wednesday, President Ortega announced he was canceling a trip to Panama's presidential inauguration because of the death.

Nicknamed "The Explosive Thin Man," Arguello retired from boxing in 1995 with a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts and was a champion in three weight divisions. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992, where flags were flying at half-staff in his honor Wednesday.

Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, a former welterweight world champion, expressed disbelief.

"I can't believe it. He was my friend, my brother," Duran said. "His death is a great loss for world boxing and a much greater loss for Nicaragua."

By AMANDA LEE MYERS
Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX (AP) -- Boxer Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter is on life support after she was found with her neck on a treadmill cable Monday, police said.

The girl's 7-year-old brother found her on a treadmill with her neck on a cable attached to the exercise machine at their Phoenix home, police Sgt. Andy Hill said, calling it a "tragic accident."

The boy told the girl's mother, who was in another room. She took the girl off the cable, called 911 and tried to revive her.

Responding officers and firefighters performed CPR on the girl as they rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was in "extremely critical condition" and on life support, Hill said.

"Somehow she was playing on this treadmill, and there's a cord that hangs under the console - it's kind of a loop," Hill said. "Either she slipped or put her head in the loop, but it acted like a noose, and she was obviously unable to get herself off of it."

Hill said former heavyweight champion Tyson had been in Las Vegas but flew to Phoenix immediately after learning of the accident.

Tyson could not immediately be reached for comment. Calls to three of his representatives were either not returned or not answered.

Hill said everything in the investigation pointed to an accident. "There's nothing in the investigation that revealed anything suspicious," he said.

He added that responding to calls involving children is an officer's most difficult duty.

"Those are the things that stay with you in your career," he said. "We always home for a miracle - not to have the worst happen to a child."

Surprising to me, but Mickey Rourke (the actor) was an undefeated professional boxer retiring with a pro record of 6-0-2. Of course I know that doesn't mean much. You must look at the competition, but it's still quite an accomplishment.

The most ludicrous undefeated title belongs to Scott Daley. He ended his career with a record of 24-0-0 with all 24 wins coming by knockout. This got me wondering why I had never heard of him. He had only retired in 1998 so you would think his name would have been thrown around more often. I decided to do a a little research and found that of his 24 fights, none of his opponents had a winning record and the most mind boggling fact was that only one of his opponents had more than 1 win. That was Anthony Campbell at 25-43-2.

Dec. 19, 2008, 6:43 AM EST
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Mike "Mad Dog" Bell, a former professional wrestler whose struggle with substance abuse was featured in the documentary "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," has died. He was 37.

Bell was found Sunday at a Costa Mesa live-in rehabilitation facility, his family said.

An autopsy was conducted but investigators couldn't immediately determine the cause of death, said Dan Akin, a supervising deputy at the Orange County coroner's division. The coroner is awaiting the results of toxicology tests, he said.

Chris Bell, whose 2008 documentary examines the steroid use of his two brothers, said Mike Bell had long battled with his addictions to prescription painkillers and alcohol.

"He was always wrestling, he was a personal trainer, he was always pushing his body to the max," Chris Bell told the Orange County Register.

"You can't really blame wrestling, but it's kind of the lifestyle," he said. "You have a couple of painkillers to get to the next match, have a couple drinks night to night and it gets out of hand."

Bell wrestled on World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday Night Raw" as a "jobber," a fighter who takes falls to promote others.

"Although Mr. Bell was never under a WWE contract, WWE extends its deepest condolences to the Bell family," the organization said.

Nov 8 Elite XC cancelled, ProElite folds

EliteXC “Night of Champions,” scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nev., has been cancelled as the promotion heads into its final days of business, Sherdog.com has learned from numerous sources.

Joey Villasenor, who was slated to challenge Robbie Lawler for the EliteXC middleweight crown in Reno, was informed of the show's cancellation Monday evening.

TJ Thompson, a Pro Elite executive, said he'd been informed Monday morning by the company that it was closing its doors for good this week and that bankruptcy paperwork had already been filed. Thompson's Hawaii-based Icon Sport promotion was purchased by EliteXC's parent company, Pro Elite, in 2007.

As of Monday afternoon, Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer said he had not received word that the event had been cancelled.

A notice posted Monday evening at graciefighter.com read, “We are confirming that EliteXC has folded. What this means for our fans and supporters is that there will not be a Nick Diaz vs. Eddie Alvarez fight on November 8th.”

Graciefighter.com is operated by representatives of Diaz’s camp, who was slated to face Alvarez for the vacant EliteXC 160-pound title.

Representatives from Pro Elite did not return calls Monday.

Pro Elite, which has accrued $55 million deficit during its two years of operation, had been in need of a helping hand in recent months.

On Sept. 17, Showtime Networks filed public notice with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announcing its intention to enter preliminary negotiations for the purchase of the fledgling company.

Showtime, a subsidiary of the parent conglomerate CBS Corporation, already has broadcasting deals with the Los Angeles-based company on both its premium cable channel and CBS. Showtime also has a 20% ownership stake in Pro Elite.

Discussions of Pro Elite’s purchase were said to have gone well and a deal looked imminent as of two weeks ago when EliteXC held its third installment of “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS. The Oct. 4 event, which was funded entirely by Showtime, drew 4.56 million viewers and almost matched their initial May offering on the network.

But negative press surrounding questionable conduct before the main event between Seth Petruzelli and Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson have overshadowed the ratings success. Petruzelli, who stepped into the headlining bout on an hour's notice and beat Slice in 14 seconds with a short right jab, intonated afterward on a Monday morning talk show that promoters had given him added monetary incentive to stand with the less ground-savvy Slice.

Pro Elite officials later denied any wrongdoing, calling the pre-fight locker room discussion a "knockout bonus" offer, but public outcry led the Florida State Boxing Commission to open an investigation on the matter.

While in the bedroom, feeling he was far enough away that he wouldn't be putting his family in jeopardy, Irvin made a move and disarmed the gunman.

The intruder ran off, screaming to his partner that the guy had got the gun, and his partner then also ran off.

Boxer Corrales dies in motorcycle crash

By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS - Diego "Chico" Corrales, who won titles in two weight classes and won one of the most exciting boxing matches in recent years, died in a high-speed motorcycle crash. He was 29.

Corrales was riding a new motorcycle Monday evening when he ran into the back of a car while trying to pass at high speed on a busy residential street about 7 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, police said Tuesday.

Corrales was thrown from the motorcycle, which collided with an oncoming car, and pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:22 p.m. crash.

His promoter, Gary Shaw, said Corrales, whose career had faltered the past two years, recently bought a racing motorcycle and was riding it when he was killed.

"He fought recklessly and he lived recklessly," Shaw said. "That was his style."

Las Vegas police blamed speed and inexperience for the crash, saying it appeared Corrales did not have a valid Nevada driver's or motorcycle license.

"We're trying to calculate the speed," Sgt. Tracy McDonald said. "It appears he was well above the posted speed limit" of 35 mph.

McDonald said it will take about two weeks for investigators to receive results of drug and alcohol tests on Corrales, who was wearing a helmet.

A Florida man who was driving the oncoming car escaped injury and a 39-year-old Las Vegas woman driving the car that Corrales tried to pass reported a minor shoulder injury, McDonald said.

Corrales, who fought most of his career at 130 pounds, was a big puncher best known for getting up after two 10th-round knockdowns to stop Jose Luis Castillo on May 7, 2005, in what the Boxing Writers Association of America and numerous boxing publications called the fight of the year.

Corrales, though, was knocked out by Castillo in the rematch and then had three straight fights undermined at the weigh-in.

Castillo couldn't make weight twice against Corrales, and the second time Corrales refused to fight him at the higher weight, costing himself a $1.3 million payday. And then Corrales came in over the weight limit for his WBC 135-pound title defense against Joel Casamayor, and went on to lose the fight.

He lost his last three fights, including his final one April 7 against Joshua Clottey in Springfield, Mo. He had moved up two weight divisions to welterweight for that fight.

Corrales was born in Sacramento, Calif., and lived in Las Vegas in recent years. He won his first 33 fights and held a piece of the 130-pound title before he was stopped by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a unification fight in January 2001.

Corrales was sent to jail on a domestic abuse charge after that fight, and didn't fight again for two years. He came back to fight a trilogy against Casamayor, losing two of the three fights, and split a pair of fights with Castillo.

"He always cared about the fans and gave them their money's worth," Shaw said. "He was a true warrior. He was what boxing stood for, and what boxing is all about."

HUGE MMA BREAKING NEWS!

Updated: March 27, 2007, 10:45 AM ET
Source: UFC buys Pride for less than $70M Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The majority owners of Ultimate Fighting Championship have agreed to buy their biggest mixed martial arts rival, Pride Fighting Championships, in a deal that will establish megafights among the outfits' titleholders and possibly attract huge pay-per-view audiences.

Company executives declined to comment on the sales price, but a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta will purchase the Japan-based Pride for less than $70 million. The person was not authorized to speak to reporters and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The deal was completed Tuesday and was announced during a news conference in Tokyo, where Lorenzo Fertitta has been negotiating with Nobuyuki Sakakibara, the majority owner and chief executive of Dream Stage Entertainment Inc., Pride's owner.

"We have been talking to Pride for probably about 11 months," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It's been a long, drawn-out process but we finally were able to put the two brands together."

To buy the company, the brothers created a new entity called Pride FC Worldwide Holdings LLC. The newly formed company will take over Pride assets, including its trademarks, video library and valuable roster of fighters, from Dream Stage. The Fertitta brothers, who own Las Vegas-based Zuffa LLC, the parent company of UFC, intend to keep the well-known Pride name and promote fights under that brand.

The acquisition marks a new phase in the brothers' quest to dominate the burgeoning world of mixed martial arts since they bought the struggling UFC in 2001.

"This is really going to change the face of MMA," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "Literally creating a sport that could be as big around the world as soccer. I liken it somewhat to when the NFC and AFC came together to create the NFL."

The deal allows the Fertitta brothers to broker the biggest MMA fights possible in the near future, increasing their influence in this sports entertainment business.

"We will be able to literally put on the fights that everyone wants to see," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "It will allow us to put on some of the biggest fights ever."

In the past, there has been at least one case in which Pride and UFC couldn't hammer out a deal to put their top fighters in the ring together. With Pride in their pocket, the Fertitta brothers intend to ensure that never happens again.

The sale gives Pride more financial backing to expand the business internationally after suffering a recent financial blow.

Major sponsor Fuji Television Network Inc. dropped Pride in June after a tabloid linked Pride to the Japanese mob -- something Sakakibara has denied vigorously. To help bolster Pride, the company staged two PPV fights in Las Vegas. Neither was a financial success. The fights gained exposure for Pride but lost money, making the sale of Pride more likely.

"I think it certainly weakened their position," Lorenzo Fertitta said. "One of our goals is to get back on a major platform back here in Japan."

Lorenzo Fertitta said he'll be looking to expand Pride internationally.

Buying Pride is the latest in a series of acquisitions that the brothers have made in the last six months. Zuffa snapped up World Extreme Cagefighting and World Fighting Alliance last year.

Similar to Pride, buying WFA gave UFC the rights to a popular fighter named Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Jackson will face UFC's most popular fighter, Chuck Liddell, the current light heavyweight champ in Las Vegas, on May 26 on PPV.

In the combat world, the Pride deal leaves a fragmented group of upstarts and K-1, another Japanese company that promotes fighters skilled in various forms of kick boxing.

Thanks to a surge in popularity, the brothers' investment in UFC and MMA in general has begun to pay off.

Last year, UFC cracked $200 million in PPV revenue, putting it on par with World Wrestling Entertainment Inc.

UFC stages fights in arenas across the country and airs a clutch of successful television shows on Spike TV. It has also opened an office in London, looking toward establishing itself internationally.

The brothers also run Station Casinos Inc. in Las Vegas. Lorenzo Fertitta is president and Frank Fertitta is chairman and chief executive of Station Casinos, a public company that was recently agreed to be purchased by a private equity investor group that includes key members of the Fertitta family.

Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

Duran, Whitaker head boxing Hall of Fame

By WILLIAM KATES, Associated Press Writer

CANASTOTA, N.Y. - Roberto Duran, a world champion in four weight divisions over a career that spanned five decades, and Olympic gold medalist Pernell Whitaker, another four-division champion, were voted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Thursday.

Duran and Whitaker were chosen from the modern era, along with undefeated Mexican strawweight champion Ricardo "Finito" Lopez, who held his world crown for more than a decade with a string of 21 successful defenses.

Artist Leroy Neiman topped the list of old-timers, pioneers, non-participants and observers. Other living inductees who will be enshrined June 10 were Argentine trainer Amilcar Brusa and longtime WBC president Jose Sulaiman.

Honored posthumously were heavyweight George Godfrey, lightweight Pedro Montanez, light heavyweight Kid Norfolk, manager/matchmaker Cuco Conde, newspaper cartoonist TAD Dorgan, and 19th century boxers Young Barney Aaron and Dick Curtis.

All three modern era fighters were chosen in their first year of eligibility following a minimum five-year retirement. Members of the Boxing Writers Association and a panel of international boxing historians chose the inductees.

Duran, now 55 and a boxing promoter, once declared, "I was born to be champion of the world."

Duran grew up poor in Panama with little education. He started boxing for money and turned professional in 1967 at age 16 and fought until he was 50, finally forced to stop by injuries from a 2001 car accident. Over five decades, "Hands of Stone" Duran compiled a 103-16 record, with 70 knockouts, and won world titles in four divisions: lightweight (1972-1979), welterweight (1980), junior middleweight (1983), and middleweight (1989-1990).

A ferocious but untrained fighter, Duran quickly became a fan favorite as he ran off 21 straight victories as a professional. Mostly a brawler who overwhelmed opponents in his early fights, Duran then came under the guidance of Hall of Fame trainer Ray Arcel.

"He was a complete fighter," said trainer Angelo Dundee, a 1992 inductee. "He could beat you with strength. He could outsmart you. He did so much, he made it look easy."

Although Duran's opponents included a half-dozen Hall of Famers, his most famous fights were with Sugar Ray Leonard, whom he fought three times in the 1980s.

Duran defeated an unbeaten Leonard in Montreal in June 1980 to claim the WBC welterweight title. He lost to Leonard in a rematch five months later in the infamous "No Mas" fight, in which Duran inexplicably quit before the eighth round. Leonard also won a rubber match in 1989.

Whitaker was a southpaw with a stinging right jab who won more than 200 amateur fights before capturing a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics and turning professional. "Sweet Pea" won the IBF lightweight world championship in 1989 with a 12-round decision over Greg Haugen, and later that year added the WBC belt by beating Jose Luis Ramirez. He unified the championship by taking the WBA title from Juan Nazario in August 1990.

Whitaker, now 42, also captured world titles as IBF light welterweight champion (1992), WBC welterweight champion (1993-1997) and the WBA light middleweight champion (1995). Whitaker retired in 2001 with a 40-4-1 record, with 17 KOs.

The Mexican-born Lopez was one of the most dominant champions in ring history, finishing with a career record of 51-0-1, with 38 KOs. The only blemish on his record was an eighth-round technical draw against Rosendo Alvarez in March 1998, an outcome he avenged in a rematch eight months later.

Repairs To Costly To Keep Kronk Gym Open

Repairs too costly to keep Kronk Gym openAssociated Press

DETROIT -- The Kronk Gym, the dingy basement that helped produce world champions Evander Holyfield and Oscar De La Hoya, has closed.

Champions Thomas Hearns and Lennox Lewis also trained at Emanuel Steward's gym, which had been struggling after thieves stole copper pipes in September, cutting off its water supply.

Steward had been paying to keep the Kronk running for months after Detroit shut down the recreation center that houses it because of a budget shortfall.

The cost of fixing the plumbing and making other major repairs led officials to decide to make the gym's shutdown permanent, said the Recreation Department's deputy director, Lawrence Hemingway.

"It's the oldest rec center in the city. It has lived a useful life," he told the Detroit Free Press in Wednesday's edition.

Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press

why has boxing gone to mush?

In my opinion the reasons are because everytime you want to watch a fight its on pay per view, and if you ever wath the old espn classic fights there were more punches thrown in a 15 round bout than todays 12 rounders. The only fights worth watching are the little guys welterweights, lightweights, etc... The heavyweight division is killing boxing its run by bohemeth easter europeans who all they do is just lean on people and jab.

Ex-heavyweight champ Berbick found dead

By HOWARD CAMPBELL, Associated Press Writer

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick was found dead in a church courtyard Saturday with chop wounds to his head in a suspected homicide.

Berbick, who was believed to be 52 and was beset by legal problems following his retirement from the ring, lost his heavyweight title to Mike Tyson and was the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali.

Berbick's body was discovered about 6:30 a.m. in his hometown parish of Portland, constable Beverly Howell said. He was pronounced dead by a local doctor in the courtyard. Police are treating Berbick's death as a homicide, Inspector Victor Henry said.

Police have no word yet on what kind of weapon was used or how many people were involved in Berbick's death, Howell said.

After beating Ali in 1981 in a unanimous decision in the Bahamas, Berbick went on to win the WBC heavyweight title four years later in a decision over Pinklon Thomas. His reign was short, however, as a 20-year-old Tyson knocked Berbick out in the second round of their bout on Nov. 22, 1986, to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

In his loss to Tyson in Las Vegas, Berbick was knocked down twice in the second round. After trying to get up from the second knockdown he fell another two times.

Berbick fought from 1976 to 2000, finishing with a 50-11-1 record, including 33 knockouts. He also fought for Jamaica at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. He was a strong puncher who moved well and had the potential to be a lasting force in the heavyweight division before the emergence of Tyson.

In spanning the Ali and Tyson eras, Berbick beat such fighters as Iran Barkley, Greg Page and John Tate. Among his losses were those to Buster Douglas, Renaldo Snipes and Larry Holmes.

Berbick's career soured following the loss to Tyson and he began to run into legal trouble.

In 1991, Berbick was convicted of misdemeanor assault for attacking his former business manager, who testified the boxer put a gun to her head and accused her of stealing money from him.

The following year, he was convicted in Florida of raping a family baby sitter and was sentenced to four years in prison. He also was convicted in 1992 of second-degree grand theft for forging his ex-wife's signature to get a mortgage on a home.

After serving 15 months in prison, Berbick was deported from the United States. He went to Canada, where he lived for a time following the 1976 Olympics. He eventually moved back to the U.S., but was deported a second time.

He had been living in Portland parish since 2002. Recently, he had been coaching boxing at clinics in Trinidad.

Though Berbick was believed to be 52, according to boxing records, other reports said he was as old as 56 or as young as 49.

"Legally, I'm a spirit," he once said. "I have no age."
