Coach Jim LeGrand @ Texas Middle School

One reason the Texas High Tigers have done so well the past few years is because of Coach Jim LeGrand at the Texas Middle School. In 15 seasons Coach LeGrand has put up a 95-21-5 record. This season his Tigers were 7-0 and hauled in the middle schools 7th district title under LeGrand.

Wins are not the only thing that can be used as a yard stick to measure the job Coach LeGrand is dedicated to doing. He developes these young players into athletes that can become part of a winning tradition at the high school level. Coach LeGrand leads his staff during the week then helps the high school staff in his roles with the defensive stats and video work helping them prepare for the next week opponent.

Coach LeGrand is a Christian man of honor and character who loves his kids and wants the best for each of them. He wants them to develop on the field, in the classroom and in their daily lives.

Great job Coach LeGrand

I have to give a pat on the back for all their kids, coaches, and parents. They have fought as hard as a team can at that age and they never quit playing. They came into the playoffs the 6th seed and went and beat the 2nd seed Van this past Saturday. They have been fun to watch and I hope it continues. GOOD LUCK INDIANS!!!!

Junior High Softball @ Maud

Maud Parents- Please come to this month's School Board meeting to show your support for Junior High Softball for our girls. Now that we have a 6th, 7th, & 8th grade athletics program in place for them, let's give them a sport to compete in, besides basketball (which involves a small percentage of our girls). This would, in my opinion, be an excellent opportunity for our girls, and once initiated, I'm sure some of the other schools in the area would follow suit. They would just about have to, to remain competitive at the High School level in years to come.

Also, can anyone tell me what other schools in East Texas already have a Junior High Softball program? I know of Avery, Saltillo, and Sulphur Bluff.

If these boys stay together I think they will be a very talented team in high school. They have only had one scrimage which they won 12 to 6, lost to buffalo 8 to 6 and beat crossroads 22 to 13. That might not seem very impressive but all but one touchdown was scored thru the air. So far in 3 games they are 22 of 33 5 tds and 2 int. Pretty good for some 7th graders, they just need to get the running game going.

Cleveland moved on to the second round after an 11-4 win over Princeton.

Tarkington will face Princeton in an elimination game today at 5 p.m.

Paris opened Saturday’s game by sailing through the top half of the first inning as starting pitcher Jeff King allowed only one hit.

They followed that by sending everyone in the starting line-up to the plate in the bottom half of the inning en route to scoring eight runs.

It was the most runs scored in the first inning of any of the four games on Saturday. The closest any other team came to that was Marshall, which scored six runs in the first inning of its game against Anna.

Paris lead-off hitter Chevis Springer, who scored two runs in that opening inning, reached base after a frozen-rope single to the Tarkington center fielder.

Ty Huie, who batted 3 for 3 and was only a home run away from hitting for the cycle, followed with a single of his own, and Laytner Kennedy followed by driving in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right-center field.

Corbin Taylor drew a walk to put runners on first and third base for Lucas Lehman, who capitalized with an RBI single to left field.

Colby Rose followed suit by sending Taylor and Lehman across the plate with a two-run double. A few pitches later, Esch gained an RBI by hitting a sacrifice fly to deep right field.

King drew a full-count walk, Colton Coe singled and Springer drew a full-count walk to load the bases for Huie.

He cleared them just two pitches later with a triple.

Tarkington finally put an end to the inning by forcing Kennedy to pop out to shortstop.

But it couldn’t stop Paris from completing its quest for a first-round victory, as Paris cruised to the win.

Tarkington 000 00 — 0 2

Paris 812 0x — 11 11

WP: Jeff King 5.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H

LP: Josh Consemu 0.2 IP, 7 ER

Top hitters

Tarkington: Colby Felton 1-2; David Graham 1-2.

Paris: Chevis Springer 2-2, 3 R; Ty Huie 3-3, 4 RBI, R, 2B, 3B; Corbin Taylor 2-2, 2 R; Colby Rose 2-3, 3 RBI, R.

Durant, Okla., 13,

Hopkins Co. 3

Durant, Okla., began its quest for a Texas Dixie Pre-Majors tournament title by claiming a 13-3 win over Hopkins County in the first game Saturday at Hub Hollis Field.

The Oklahoma squad will receive a bye until Monday and will await the winner of Sunday’s Marshall/Kilgore game.

Hopkins will face Anna today in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m.

Durant took an early one-run lead after the opening inning but ran away with that lead in the next frame after scoring six more runs.

Josh Brown led Durant at the plate by going 2 for 3 and scoring a run.

Canyon Cochran was 3 for 3 for Hopkins and scored a pair of runs.

Hopkins Co. 101 10 — 3

Durant 261 4x — 13

Top hitters

Hopkins Co.: Canyon Cochran 3-3, 2 R; Jared Riley 1-2.

Durant: Josh Brown 2-3, R; Nolan Fanning 1-2, R.

Marshall 18, Anna 0

Marshall pitchers Alex Cameron and Jared Hanson combined for a four-inning no-hitter, and the offense gave them more than enough support en route to an 18-0 rout of Anna on Saturday at Hub Hollis Field.

With the victory, Marshall advances to face Kilgore today at noon.

Anna will square off against Hopkins County at 2:30 p.m. in an elimination game.

Marshall led 15-0 after two innings and had no problem holding on to the advantage for the remainder of the contest.

Andres Vence was 3 for 3 from the plate for Marshall and scored two runs.
Sabine "KO's" West Rusk, 16-1, 14U

Sabine went on the road Friday night and totally dominated every facet of the game in overpowering the West Rusk Raiders, 16-0. This brings their season record to 4-0.

Whether on the mound (NO HITTER, 14K's), at the plate (12-0 margin in hits), or on the base paths (14-0 stolen bases), the stats on the scorebook reflected the final numbers on the scoreboard ... definitely in the Nationals' favor.

While Dakota Stewart, Dylan Cook, and Jared Streeter controlled the game from the mound, a batting trio of Cook, Streeter, and Zack Martin led the offensive barrage at the plate.

Observations from the front row through the eyes of Dakota Stewart's mom ....
(1) How dominating was the Sabine win?
(a) How about a quick look at the major stat totals on the scorebook? Here's the comparative game stats:
............................................................. ................................................................... .............................. Sabine
............... SABINE ......... .............. ............ (7)
RBI ............. 16 ............... * .................... -- .................... -- ........................ -- .....................-- ................ 16

The only “positive stat” West Rusk won was the ASSIST Stat, 6-2. Why?
Sabine only had two assists because ...
... Only one ball was hit into play ... an out (1-3).
... The 3rd baseman got an assist from a pick-off rundown of the West Rusk lead-off hitter, who walked ... all the way to 3rd (two more walks followed).
-- A throwing error (E-2) during the run-down allowed the Raiders to score their only run.

(b) Three more stats that support the final score ...
-- All eleven Sabine players had an RBI.
-- All nine West Rusk players “KO’ed” at least once.
-- All sixteen Sabine runs scored via an RBI for the first time this season.
... No scoring by error, wild pitch, passed b.all, steal of home, or balk.

(2) POPTEST TIME!!! Who are the following people – Stewart, Cook, and Streeter?
(a) An up-and-coming sports agent firm.
(b) A double play combination ... Stewart to Cook to Streeter.
© Three lucky Sabine athletes who are dating the good-looking Anderson triplets, who are also sophomore cheerleaders.
(d) Three National pitchers who can legally smoke ... their fastball, that is.

If you’ve seen any of the first three Sabine games, you know that Dakota Stewart and Jared Streeter are the HOSSES that the Nationals have ridden to a 3-0 record to-date.
Sabine Nationals Top Chapel Hill 11-2, 14U, Go 10-0

Jackie Gleason said it best 47 years ago ….. However, they scored 11 straight runs, including a 6-run 3rd inning, to win going away.

Observations from the front row --- through the eyes of Dakota Stewart’s mom ---
(1) The feeling is universal .....
.. Latin ................. invictus
.. English .............. UNDEFEATED

No matter what language you say it in --- it still comes out with the same message. You were victorious over everyone you faced. The Sabine Nationals finished the 14U schedule with an undefeated 10-0 record. The wins weren’t always pretty; in fact, they trailed in several, including a 7-2 deficit against Winona. But when everyone “headed for the house” to “call it a night”, the Nationals were ahead on the scoreboard .... all 10 times.

Sabine was scheduled to play another game against Overton in Liberty City the following Thursday night. However, they found out after the game that Overton had cancelled that game. The Overton varsity baseball team made it to the state tournament in Round Rock, and a lot of the 14U team and parents wanted to go support their varsity team. You certainly can't blame them for that.

(2) The FREEBIE FACTOR earned a slot near the top with the advantage Sabine held. Check out these stats ---

----------------------------- (FREEBIE) ------ Error= --------------- RBI --- Run
Sabine ------------- # ---- Run ---- RBI ---- Run ---- WP – SB - Hits -- Total
Walks ------------- 10 ----- 7 ------- 3 -------- --
HBP ----------------- 1 ---- -- ------- -- -------- --
Errors -------------- 1 ------ -- ------ 1 -------- --
KO-PB/WP --------- 1 ----- 1 ------ -- -------- --
--Totals ----------- 13 ----- 8 ------- 4 -------- -- ------- 1 ---- 1 ---- 5 ------ 11

Chapel Hill
Walks -------------- 1 ----- -- ------- -- ------- --
HBP ---------------- -- ----- -- ------- -- ------ --
Errors -------------- -- ----- -- ------- -- ------- --
KO-PB/WP ------- -- ----- -- ------- -- ------- --
--Totals ------------ 1 ----- -- ------- -- ------- -- ------ -- ----- -- ---- 2 ------- 2

The Nationals scored 8 runs from FREEBIE’s, 7 from walks alone --- well more than enough to win this game.

(3) Sabine's most productive inning was the 3rd, in which they scored 6 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. This outburst effectively put the game away for the Nationals.
Sabine ..................... AB ............................................................ ................................. TWICE!!!!
... What happened? WALK ... they didn't give him a third try.

The Bulldogs walked him with the bases loaded, bringing in a run ... better than bringing in 4 .....
... Would he have hit a home run if pitched to? I don't know, but he did one-hop the center field fence in the 3rd inning for a ground-rule double.

(6) The Nationals' pitching staff came through Monday night with a good effort.
-- Starter Blake McCann, after a 2-run, 4-hit 1st inning, settled down with two K's in closing out a scoreless 2nd inning.
-- Dylan Cook (3rd inning) and Jared Streeter (4th inning) came on to pitch a scoreless couple of innings, each registering 2 K's.

(7) Kudos to Spencer Gregory and Brandon Florence for "QAB's" (Quality At Bats) against Chapel Hill's starter, Brandon Douglas.
-- Quality as in working on increasing the pitch count ... protecting the plate ...
(a) Gregory (2nd Inn'g) 10-pitch walk .. four 2-strike fouls.
-- Moved a runner to 3rd, who then scored on a wild pitch.
-- Increased run difference to 3-run lead, taking away the "single runner/home run" 2-run scoring play for a tie game.

(b) Florence (3rd Inn'g) 9-pitch walk, loading the bases (three 2-strike fouls).
-- Douglas was pulled off the mound with that walk.
-- Blake McCann then hit the reliever's first pitch down the right field line for a double, driving in two runs.

(8) Taking that extra base on a hit in the gap or down the line ... so tempting .. sort of like KNOWING that you can hit the "high hard one"!! There's a couple of problems though.
-- Not many batters can hit the "high hard one" .. even in the major leagues.
-- Outfielders on the other teams also practice. Quite a few can frequently make strong accurate throws.

(a) There were some "less than successful" efforts made to "take the extra base" Monday night.
Chapel Hill
3rd Inn'g - double to center field fence ....... OUT trying to stretch it into a triple.

Sabine
3rd Inn'g - single down the right field line ... OUT trying to stretch it into a double (RBI).
3rd Inn'g - single to left center field ........... OUT trying to stretch it into a double (2 RBI).

(b) POP TEST TIME!!!! Why do hitters get thrown out trying for the extra base? It boils down to TECHNIQUE ... TECHNIQUE ... TECHNIQUE.
-*- They don't get a good jump out of the batter's box.
...... When the coach said, "Dig in", he didn't mean use a shovel!!!
-*- They don't run hard to first base.
....... Of course, it's hard to do while texting your girlfriend about that hard hit you just nailed to the gap.
-*- They don't "cut the inside corner of the base.
....... Again .. it's hard to do while posing for the "rounding first base" action shot for your mom's camera.
-*- They don't glance at the "FIELDER NEAR/WITH THE BALL" to see where the ball is.
....... Of course, that's hard to do when you're mentally deciding which would look better to the crowd ... a pop-up slide or a "HEAD FIRST" slide into the extra base you're trying to take.
-*- Sometimes, the fielder makes a great play to throw you out.
....... It happened in T-Ball ... and it happens in the major leagues. And since you're somewhere in between .......

(9) Just a note on recording a play in the scorebook.
-- 1st Inn'g .. Sabine has the bases loaded, one out, and Brandon Florence at bat.
-- Florence hits a fly ball deep enough to center field to score the runner from 3rd base.
-- No problem, you say .. Sacrifice fly (SF-8) ... RBI ... no "time at bat".

... BUT the fielder drops the ball and Florence reaches first base, while the others advance a base.
... Now you ask, "Does this mean that Florence is charged with a time at bat, and no RBI (runner scores on error - E-8)?

... NO, Florence gets a Sacrifice fly and RBI. And there's no "time at bat" charged to him. The E-8 accounts for him reaching first base, as well as the other runners advancing to 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

When OPPORTUNITY knocked, Sabine answered the door, scoring 10 unearned runs in a 12-6 win in Overton Tuesday night. The Nationals ran their record to 9-0 and extended their "come-from-behind" streak to three games. The Spartans from Overton played an EXTREMELY HOSPITABLE HOST, handing out more runs than door prizes at a Tupperware party.

On the offensive side, Sabine's Dylan Cook had his best game of the season with a 4 for 4 effort and two triples.

Observations from the front row:
(1) Happy birthday to you,
... Happy birthday to you,
... Happy birthday Sabine Nationals ......
... Happy birthday to you.

I went to a baseball game in Overton Tuesday night .... and a birthday party broke out. I forgot to bring a gift!!! That's alright; the Overton Spartans brought enough for the Nationals.
(a) To be fair to both the Spartans and the Nationals, both teams committed five errors. However, errors present OPPORTUNITIES ..
--- WRONG PLACE/WRONG TIME ... runs scored on errors.
--- RESPONSES ... What does the team do with the extra "at bats"?

These two error factors determine how costly the errors are. The Overton errors were costly!!!

(b) As for how the Sabine - Overton game turned out:
............................(Runs Scored) ....Total ... The BIG "E" .....
(a) POPTEST TIME ... He hurt his arm and hasn't pitched since. He started against Overton Tuesday night. The arm is still bothering him ... and it showed..
-- 6 batters ... 1 hit and 5 walks.
-- He was pulled with one out (caught stealing) and the bases loaded, leading 3-2.
-- Blake McCann came in and threw a double play (P3-3U) pitch to end the 1st inning.
-- Cook and Streeter came in later in the game to pitch an inning apiece and hold Overton in check.

Sabine ..... You’ve seen the regular ones ....
-- Runner on 1st and 3rd
-- Fake a throw to 3rd, then throw to 1st, trying to catch the runner off guard.
-- Runner on 1st attempts steals 2nd. Catcher throws to shortstop IN FRONT of 2nd, who throws home, trying to get “delayed steal” runner from 3rd.

Well, Overton brought in a couple of new ones … one (no effect) and one (should have worked).
-- Top of the 4th inning, Spartans leading 6-5.
-- One out, Stewart on 3rd and Florence on 2nd.
(a) Roach turned and threw to shortstop (at normal position) instead of 2nd base. They hoped Stewart would try to steal home. He stayed at 3rd.
-- Roach then tried a quick pick-off move to 3rd base. The throw sails high and past 3rd, bouncing off the fence and down left-field line. Stewart scored from 3rd, and Florence advanced to 3rd.
-- E-1 on throw – unearned run – score tied 6-6.

(b) Two outs, Florence on 3rd and Horan on 2nd.
-- In my opinion and by all appearances, the following was a trick pick-off play…..
-- In a “live-ball” situation, Roach walked off the mound to talk to the first baseman, Moore, who met him between the mound and 1st base.
-- Florence took off from 3rd to steal home plate. Roach turned and threw to the catcher in plenty of time to get him.
-- Florence bumped the catcher’s glove with his leg, knocking the ball loose.
-- Safe at home, E-2 – Sabine leads, 7-6.

It should have been 3rd out, 6-6 tie.
-- Two walks and HBP later, Sabine’s Cook tripled to left center with bases loaded. Score increased to 11-6, and ended Roach’s night on the mound.

-- The pick-off plays were a HUGH “Key Moment” in the game for Overton. Their “lack of success” resulted in 7 unearned runs in the 4th inning.

(7) Once again, the running game was prevalent for the Nationals, as well as the Spartans. But once again, so were the base-running OUTS!!!
(a) Sabine recorded 8 stolen bases, 4 by Streeter. However, as for making outs …
-- 4th inn’g --- Streeter caught stealing –3rd base (2-5).
-- 4th inn’g --- Florence caught stealing – home (E-2). Safe when ball knocked out of catcher’s glove.

(b) Overton recorded 7 stolen bases, 3 by Roach. However ... the outs ...
-- 1st Inn’g – Carpenter caught stealing 3rd (2-5).
-- 1st Inn’g – Charlton caught in rundown off 3rd (2-5-2-E-6). Safe at home on dropped throw by shortstop.
-- 1st Inn’g – Roach steals 3rd, scores in overthrow to 3rd by catcher (E-2 throw).
-- 3rd Inn’g – Lyon out at home (2-1) on wild pitch.
-- 3rd Inn’g – Putnam caught in rundown off 3rd (2-5-E5 throw). Safe at home on 3rd baseman throwing error.

Sabine Nationals, Errors, Time Defeats Winona, 7-5, 14U

The breeze that blew through Gladewater around 10:15 Tuesday night wasn't the beginning of a new Southern front. It was a collective sigh of relief from the Sabine family and fans as the Nationals dodged a "come from behind" effort by Winona. Sabine ran out the clock in topping the Wildcats, 7-5, to increase their season record to 7-0.

Observations from the front row:
(1) WILDCATS WIN!! WILDCATS WIN!! WINONA HALTS SABINE'S 6-0 UNDEFEATED SEASON, 3-2!!! Say what? You have to count the unearned runs? The Nationals didn't earn them, so why do you have to count them? Oh, it's in the rule book. Okay ... new headline please...
NATIONALS WIN .. 7-5! EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 7 GAMES!!
................................................... **
..................................
Sabine Nationals Top West Rusk 12-0, 14U

Monday night against West Rusk, Sabine made sure that this wasn't a 3-3 game going into the 7th inning, as happened last Thursday night in Chapel Hill. The Nationals put up a "7-spot" in the first inning to back the stellar pitching effort of Dylan Cook, enroute to a 12-0 win and a season record of 6-0. Cook proved that Dakota Stewart and Jared Streeter aren't the only HOSSES in the stable as he faced the minimum 9 batters in a 3-inning stint.

Observations from the front row:
(1) On this night, Coach Cook decided to give his two top guns, Stewart and Streeter, a rest. Stewart played first base and Streeter caught as Dylan Cook got the opportunity to prove that he can be the IMPORTANT "THIRD PITCHER", necessary in post-season tournament play. And did Cook ever come through.

(a) 3 innings ... 0 hits ... 0 runs ... 1 HBP (hit by pitcher) that "officially" lasted 10-15 seconds on 1st base.
(b) Pitched to minimum 9 batters = 9 outs.
© All outs involved Cook (1), Streeter (2), and Stewart (3).
-- 7 K's, 1-3 grounder to Cook, PO 1-3 .. picked off runner @ 1st base.
-- the only time the other 6 guys got to play with the ball was between innings . . . at least the 1st 3 innings.
(d) Only one batter reached a 3-2 count. He struck out.

(2) After WALKING off with a 3-run 7th enroute to a 6-3 win against Chapel Hill last Thursday, the Nationals made sure that wouldn’t happen against the West Rusk Raiders. They scored 7 runs in the 1st inning, 6 before an out was recorded.

(a) The 1st inning sequence …
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. AB . . . Loc . . .. . It fell between Horan (LF), Martin (CF), and McCann (SS). That hit was bracketed by walks and left the bases loaded when Bell grounded out .. 4-3. Florence had two strikeouts in the inning.

(5) Sabine continues to be aggressive on the base paths. Led in steals by Jared Streeter with 4 and Spencer Gregory with 3, the Nationals topped the Raiders 11-0 in the stolen-base category.

(a) Both teams were caught stealing once. Of course, Sabine was a little more dramatic with theirs. Streeter led too far off 3rd base on a strikeout by Stewart, and was picked off. He was tagged out in the ensuing rundown to complete the double play .. KOK-2-5-2 (CS).

(b) The Nationals recorded four doubles for the game. They would have had a fifth, but the Raiders’ right fielder, T. Reneau, gunned a strike to 2nd baseman, Anderson, who tagged out Brandon Florence (9-4). Florence was trying to stretch a single into a double. He hit a hard line drive over the head of the right fielder to the fence, but Reneau made a great play on the ball.

Sabine Nationals “WALK” out of Chapel Hill with 6-3 win, 14U

After outscoring their last two opponents, 32-2, the Sabine Nationals walked into the Chapel Hill Baseball Complex Thursday night on an OFFENSIVE roll. They “WALKED” away feeling fortunate with three 7th-inning runs to top the Chapel Hill Bulldogs, 6-3, in a 14U game to improve their record to 5-0 for the season.

The Bulldogs threw a “change up” at the Nationals' offensive machine and kept them off balance throughout the game. Opportunity knocked at Chapel Hill’s door so many times that you’d thought it was a bill collector. However, when push came to shove, the Sabine “D” and pitching staff held them off until that fateful 7th inning … when the Bulldog pitcher lost his focus, and the walks followed.

Observations from the front row:
(1) I’ve heard it said and proved over the years ... techniques taught in baseball, especially in the batter’s box and on the pitcher’s mound, are extremely important. These techniques are used as tools to combat/help overcome the mind games that occur in the game of baseball.

Well, the mind games “came a callin’" on the mound as Sabine came to bat in the top of the 7th inning. It could be said that one pitch made the difference ... a 3-2 pitch, if you will ... at least in the 7th.
-- Bruce Broyles, 11th batter in the lineup, came to bat ... and took all 6 pitches thrown to him… walked on a 3-2 count.
-- Johnathan Chambers, 12th batter took 4 pitches to walk ... leadoff Jared Streeter took 4 pitches to walk, loading the bases.
-- These three batters “TOOK” 14 consecutive pitches to load the bases on walks.

How were the three runs driven in? Now, it really got crazy ...
THE BALL NEVER REACHED THE BASE PATHS ... and three runs scored to give Sabine the lead, 6-3.
(a) Spencer Gregory – slow grounder to 2nd baseman, who ran in to field ... batter beat throw to first base .......... RBI .. 4-3.
(b) Dylan Cook – pop up, just behind and to the 3rd base side of mound ... ball dropped short of diving shortstop . RBI .. 5-3.
...(play ruled “Infield Fly Rule” .. batter out, but all runners advanced).
© Zack Martin batting – Streeter scored from 3rd base on wild pitch ........ ........ ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ... 6-3.
(d) Martin struck out and Chase Clifford grounded out to the pitcher, but the damage was done.

(2) The games-to-date for the Sabine Nationals leading up to the Chapel Hill game ...
-- Sabine . 9-0 Winona
-- Sabine 10-4 Carthage
-- Sabine 15-1 Arp
-- Sabine 16-1 West Rusk

The secret to beating the Nationals? Chapel Hill may have found it.
Kudos to the Bulldogs' Tray Allen, who pitched a great game, trailing 2-1 when he left after 4 innings.
-- 4 innings .. 2 hits .. 2 runs .. 1 earned.
-- 2 hits in 1st Inn’g .. blooper to left and medium grounder between short and pitcher into center field (RBI).
-- 3 walks, all erased by a double play and two by "caught stealing" on the base paths.
-- Allen's pitching repertoire seemingly consisted of three pitches .. slow curve, slow "balloon" pitch, and then his "change up".

I thought for a minute that I'd come to a slow-pitch softball game. Then I realized that the Nationals weren't getting the timing down on Allen's pitches. He kept them off balance his 4 innings.

-- Kept the ball around the plate. He faced 14 batters, 11 of which had no more than 2 b.alls called ... the other 3 batters walked.

(3) RISP (Runners In Scoring Position)
In a close game, you can't waste opportunities (ducks on the pond) to score runs. In the Sabine-Chapel Hill game Thursday night, the game was tied 3-3 after 6 innings. How did Sabine win it ... how did Chapel Hill lose it?

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..."Runs Scored Via"
..............RISP ... This involves only the first 6 innings.

(a) Chapel Hill had 13 more opportunities to score, with 10 more batters up with RISP. However,
(b) the Bulldogs went 1-13 at the plate (.077). Runs could have scored on groundouts; but,
© 9 of the 12 outs were K's (strikeouts). There was no opportunity for the runners to score on K's.
(d) the other 3 "at bats" ... flyout to 8 .. 8-2 double play (3rd out), batting out of order (3rd out), fly ball dropped E-7 .. run scored from 2nd.
(e) Chapel Hill had runners on 3rd base at the end of:
-- 1st Inn'g .. thrown out at home on double play for 3rd out.
-- 2nd Inn'g .. left on 3rd.
-- 4th Inn'g .. left on 3rd.
-- 5th Inn'g .. left on 3rd.
-- 6th Inn'g .. left on 3rd.
The Sabine Cardinals didn't have ANY runners left on 3rd in the first 6 innings. And the score was tied, 3-3 after 6 innings.

(4) The "Mr. Consistency" Award goes to winning pitcher, Jared Streeter, of the Cardinals.
-- 3 innings ... 1 hit ... 1 run.
-- 8 of 9 outs = strikeouts.
-- 5th Inn’g .. 3-2 Sabine .. This game saw 3 double plays in 3 consecutive half innings.
(a) Sab “D” – Bot 1st …– F8 – 8-2 .. great throw from left-center field to the plate to get the runner from 3rd.
(b) C/H “D” – Top 2nd – P3-3U ...... runner on 1st was attempting to steal 2nd base when pop-up occurred.
© Sab “D”. – Bot 2nd – 4U - 4-3 ... 2nd baseman Spencer Gregory fielded grounder, tagged runner and threw to 1st.

(7) There were two IMPACT moments in the game for Sabine ..
(a) 1st Inn’g .. 2-1 Sabine – CH runner on 3rd .. 1 out
-- batter hit a fly ball to left-center field. Zack Martin made the catch and threw a perfect strike to catcher Dylan Cook, who tagged the runner out at the plate and completed the DOUBLE PLAY!!!

(b) 6th Inn’g .. 3-3 tie game – Chapel Hill runner on 3rd .. 0 outs.
-- the Chapel Hill crowd was going wild. In fact, I thought I heard shouts of “Who, who .. who let the Dawgs out?”
-- Jared Streeter struck out the next three batters .. He fielded a routine grounder behind 1st base. Easy out, right?
-- No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!!!!! He takes one step ... and falls flat on his ... derriere. Fortunately, he jumped up in time with the ball and his pride in-hand, and beat the batter to the base for the final out of the game.

POPTEST TIME ... the reason Dakota fell down ...?
(a) his mother was filming a sure-fire winner for the "AMERICA'S FUNNIEST VIDEOS" show.
(b) he was perfecting his ballet move for the lead male audition next week for Swan Lake.
© he was practicing the moves for Hannah Montana's "Hoedown Throwdown", the latest line-dance craze.
(d) he was turning to moonwalk (ala Michael Jackson) to the base when he slipped down.
(e) it was after 10 pm and the evening dew had settled on the grass, making it slippery

Sabine "Nationals" Top Arp Tigers 15-1, 14U

In a game that brought new meaning to the term, no-hitter, Dakota Stewart pitched the "14U" Sabine Nationals to a 15-1, 4-inning, win over the Arp Tigers in Liberty City Thursday night.

Unlike the past two games with Winona and Carthage, Sabine didn't need walks to generate their 15-run outburst. Their offense exploded for eight extra-base hits, highlighted by three home runs. But what will be remembered was the total domination by Stewart on the mound. He no hit the Tigers ... no, make that "NO-HIT"!!!

A few observations from the front row:
(1) How dominant was Stewart, you ask? And what do I mean by "NO-HIT"?
(a) He struck out 12 batters Thursday night.
(b) Arp's "4-inning" offense consisted of 12 outs ....
-- every out recorded was a "K". Not a single batter put the ball into play for the Tigers.
-- so he no-hit them, you say ... lot's of no-hitters thrown every year.
© He "NO-HIT" their bats!!! That's right. I checked my scorebook. I don't show a single Arp batter even fouling off a pitch (all ".'s" for called strikes and "---'s" for swinging strikes. No "F's" for foulballs). I've never seen that before.
(d) In fact, in a game called, "Hit by the ball", the Arp batters beat the bats, 1-0. Stewart hit a batter in the 4th inning (HBP). Arp's Garet Allen was hit on the elbow (funny bone). Based on his reaction ... he didn't find it very funny.
(e) Arp's only run came as the result of ...
-- 1st base ... walk. 2nd base ... stolen base. 3rd base ... advanced on E-4 .. throw-down bounced off his glove.
-- home ... picked off 3rd, but scored on E-1 .. pitcher dropped throw during rundown. The run was unearned.

Thursday night's effort by Stewart might not have been PERFECT, but it was still a SPECIAL performance in his sports' life. And he was given the game ball as a reward for his accomplishment.

(2) I remember listening to a Houston Astro game on the radio back in high school in 1964. Ken Johnson pitched a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds ... and lost 1-0 on errors. So Sabine's 15-1 win wasn't a solo effort by Stewart on the mound Thursday night. His teammates came through BIG TIME. In fact, Stewart was right there with them as the Nationals had their best offensive effort of the season.

Sabine's offensive outburst was led by ...
....................................................... At Bats .... Runs .... RBI .... X-Bse .... Steals
-- Dylan Cook ................................... 2-2 .......... 2 ........ 2 ........
Sabine "Nationals" nets big inning to top Carthage, 10-5, 14U

And they say that baseball isn't a contact sport ..... Well, Thursday night in Sabine, the Sabine Nationals and Carthage Astros proved that baseball IS a contact sport. Sabine, however, made hard contact where it counted the most ... on the baseball ... and on the scoreboard, as they used a 5-run 6th inning to overpower Carthage enroute to a 10-4 win.

A few observations from the front row:
(1) What's the old joke about going to a fight ... and a hockey game breaking out? Well, there was no fighting Thursday night, as the umps, coaches, and players (for the most part) kept control of the situations. But there was plenty of contact between the ball, batters, fielders, and runners ...
especially in the last two innings: ........................................... Next ........... Prior
1st Inn'g ......................... Contact ................. Results .......... Batters ........ Score
(a) "Car" batter ...................HBP ...................... Sabine

(h) "Car" runner ......... Ran over catcher ..... Out (by rule) .... EOGame ...... 10-4 ... Sabine
................................... at home plate

Hit by pitcher three times, hit in the back with a throw, and hit in the shin by a grounder ... and that was just by the ball. That happens in games, especially at this level. As for the three player-to-player contacts? I thought they crossed the line, especially the play at the plate that ended the game. I'm sure that the coach will take advantage of this opportunity to re-emphasize "tag techniques", as well as maintaining mental focus and emotional control throughout future ball games. Come to think of it, Carthage has a future ball game Monday night ... a rematch with the same Sabine Nationals. It should prove to be an interesting game.

(2) Pop test time: Which of these base-hit descriptions doesn't belong in this list?
(a) flair to right field.
(b) topped roller to 3rd base.
© Texas leaguer to center field (dropped between 3 fielders).
(d) blooper down the right field line.
(e) "knocked the cover off the ball" line drive to the left center field fence.
(f) check-swing "excuse me" hit over 2nd baseman

Yeah, you're right. The answer is #(e) !!! But like the guy said, "They all look like line drives in tomorrow's sports page." However, at game time, the "hard hits" can have a big IMPACT on the flow of the game.

Carthage --
-- had 4 hits .. 3 hit hard -- double and 2 singles
-- hard hits resulted in 1 run and 1 rbi.
-- the problem, of course, was the 16 strikeouts (out of 21 game outs). That tends to reduce the opportunity to hit "the hard one" for a hit or error by the defense.

Sabine, on the other hand --
-- had 9 hits .. 5 hit hard .. 2 triples and 3 singles
-- hit several hard grounders in which the 3rd baseman made good defensive plays for outs.
-- had the grounder that hit the Carthage pitcher on the shin. The batter reached 1st base on the pitcher's throwing error.
-- hard hits resulted in 4 runs and 5 rbi's.

(3) There's an old saying -- "Diamonds are a girl's best friend". For you players, your moms and dads already know this ... some day, you will too. But in the world of baseball, the saying is, "Double plays are a pitcher's best friend"! That may be true in the pros, or even in college. However, at this level (even high school baseball), I believe that "K's" are a pitcher's best friend.

For the second game in arow, the Sabine duo of Dakota Stewart and Jarod Streeter matched their IMPACT mark of 16 strikeouts.
...................................... Inng ..... K ..... W ..... H ..... R ..... LOB
Stewart ...... 1st 2 inn'g .. 2 ........ 6 ...... 4 ...... 1 ..... 2 ....... 6 ..... ***
...................2nd 2 inn'g .. 2 ........ 3 ...... 2 ...... 1 ..... - ........ 2
....................................... 4 ........ 9 ...... 6 ...... 2 ..... 2 ....... 8
Streeter ......................... 3 ........ 7 ...... 1 ...... 2 ..... 2 ....... 1
Totals ............................ 7 ....... 16 ...... 7 ...... 4 ..... 4 ....... 9

Stewart used the "K" to get him and his teammates out of trouble in his first couple of innings of work. In the 5th inning, Streeter came in and had his second effective pitching performance in arow with 7 K's and only 1 walk.

*** The first 2 innings were Carthage's opportunity to take control of the game. How?

Here's a math quiz -- what's the answer? ................................. Total
Inn'g ..... Score ...... (Hits .. + .. Walks .. + .. HBP .. + .. Err .. = On base
1-2 ........ 2-2 ............. 2 .... + ..... 4 ...... + .... 1 ..... + ... 1 ... = .... 8 .....

The Astros had 8 baserunners after the first 2 innings. But they only scored two runs? Why?
-- that was because Stewart struck out 6 batters in those first 2 innings. All 6 outs came via the "K"!!!!
-- and Carthage left the bases loaded in both innings.

Stewart had some control problems as he gave up 6 walks and 1 HBP in the 4 innings that he worked. Unlike the Winona game (1 walk), he was just missing the outside corner a little. But the "K's" kept Sabine in the game until the runs came.

(4) 6th inng ... the runs came. The Nationals put up a 5-spot to double their score and increase the lead to 10-3. It wasn't the fact that 5 runs scored, but the way they were scored. A slow motion car crash comes to mind. You know it's in the process of happening ... and there's nothing you can do about it.

Carthage's starting pitcher, James Donald, left after 5 innings, trailing 3-5 (3 earned runs). Perhaps it was ...
-- his 92 pitch-count, according to my count.
-- his run given up in the 5th inning to run the score to 5-3, Sabine.
-- the top of the order coming up for Sabine in the 6th (3 for 6, 3 runs, 2 triples, 1 rbi).

However, the relief pitcher came in for the 6th inning and faced 8 Sabine batters. The results?
Btr ...At Bat ......................................................Runners ................... Score
#1 -- Walk ...................... It's plays by the defense that allow a batter to reach first base without a base hit or out made. The results:

Sabine ... # ... Runs ... Throw in a few more hits, a passed ball, several wild pitches, and some errors .... that makes up the rest of the 6-run difference.

(6) Sabine continued their aggressive base-running style.
9 men instead of 11

I know this is the wrong section, but I need opinions...

Last night two local little league teams squared off in the first game of a tournament being held this weekend. It was a pretty typical big-town v. small community battle and the small community won 14-4. After the game the losing coach pulled out his dixie league rule book and declared himself the winner because the other team only had 9 players (must have 11). To top it off, the losing team was the home team and was down 14-2 going into the bottom of the last inning. Since there is a 7 run rule, the game was already decided, but the winning mgr decided, at the losing mgrs request, to go ahead and play the bottom half for the kids - effectively burning up innings for a pitcher (clearly a nice gesture).

What are your thoughts??

The final ruling was that since this wasn't a "postseason" tournament the rule would not be used and the deserving team would get their win and rightfully so. IMO the losing mgr made a uknowhat out of himself and acted like a MEOW... Is this the kind of example he wants to set for his kids - if your best effort leaves you in defeat, try and find some loophole to claim victory - SAD..

Oh the kids are 9 and 10 year old...

Sabine "Nationals" top Winona Wildcats, 9-0 .. 14U game

It was a cold night in Winona Friday night as the Winona Wildcats and the Sabine "Washington Nationals" met in the season opener for 14U boys youth baseball. But hey, the cold ended up not being a problem. The parents and fans furnished the blankets. The two teams furnished the HEATERS!!! From the mound, that is .......

In a 9-0 Sabine win, the 6-inning 8 pm affair resulted in 30 of the 36 outs being "rung up" as "K's"!!! Not much need for batboys in this one. Lot of batters got to carry their own bats back to the dugout.

Some observations from the front row:
(1) Three things stuck out for me in this one ...
-- lot of fast-ball pitchers on the mound for both teams,
-- the strike zone topped out just below the letters (like it's supposed to be) ... and
-- called consistently the entire game .. for both teams.

(2) Next year, the Sabine Cardinals' baseball team can look forward to the addition of at least two "flame-throwing" pitchers. They play for the Sabine Nationals this spring, and both made successful debuts Friday night.

- Dakota Stewart opened for the Nationals. He faced 10 batters in the 3 innings he pitched, striking out 9, and walking 1. He left the game with a 9-0 lead. I was told that if the Nationals had gotten just one more run to make it 10-0, Dakota would have stayed in to go for the complete game (10-run lead after 4 innings-by rule). However, we got to see ...

- Jared Streeter, who came in for the last 3 innings to complete the shutout. He struck out 7 of the 10 batters he faced, while walking none. One singled to right field for the Wildcats' only base hit, while two batters hit into infield outs.

(3) Winona almost matched Sabine in strikeouts, 14 to Sabine's 16. But they forgot the old saying about "too many walks" ... they'll kill you on the scoreboard. The Wildcats walked a total of 16 Nationals. That's right; the walk total was 16-1, in favor of Sabine. And they took advantage of it on the scoreboard. The impact in a 9-0 game?
...............Walks ....... Runs ........ RBI's
Sabine....... 16 ............ 6 ............. 2
Winona ....... 1 ............ - .............. -

(4) Sabine's offense was led by ...
-- Dylan Cook, who went 2-3, with a double and 2 rbi's,
-- Brandon Florence, who drove in 2 runs with a triple,
-- Blane Sinclair, who went 2-3, with an rbi. and
-- Jay Horan, who walked all 3 times and scored 2 runs.

(5) Sabine and Winona took different routes in using their subs Friday night ...
-- Sabine batted all 13 players in the lineup. In fact, all 13 batted 3 times each (the last batter in the lineup made the last out for Sabine in the 6th inning. I call that "giving all the batters an equal chance to hit".
-- An oddity for Sabine was that one batter actually got to bat "4" times. Spencer Gregory came to the plate 4 times in the game. How did it happen, you asked? Well, Gregory was at the plate in the 1st inning when the Sabine runner at third got picked off for the 3rd out. Gregory then led off the 2nd inning (for his "1st" official time at the plate).

-- While Sabine batted everyone in their original lineup, Winona chose to go with the traditional "9-batter" lineup. The coach subbed in 7 players during the game to bat and play the field (6 of which came in for the 4th inning).

(6) In the game of baseball, from high school on down, the "Top 4 Hitters" (sometimes 5) in a lineup usually get the glory. Then you HOPE the next 4 or 5 can "get on base enough" to "get the lead-off hitter" back up to bat. Well, Friday night Sabine's #7 hitter (Blake McCann) and #8 hitter (Sinclair) both came through ...
-- They went 3-5 (and a walk), with a run, an rbi, and 3 stolen bases.
-- In the 3rd inning, they had back-to-back QAB's (Quality At Bats) with a 7-pitch at-bat (single) and an 8-pitch at-bat (single) to score and drive in a run. Those two QAB's included 5 "2-strike" foulballs, as they battled for the right pitch to hit.

(7) The Sabine Nationals were certainly aggressive on the base paths.
-- I had them credited with 10 steals, as well as ...
-- 3 DI's (defense indifference .. 2nd or short didn't make an effort to cover 2nd base, and the catcher didn't make an effort to throw down to 2nd base.
.....The scenario is normally runners on 1st and 3rd, with the runner on 3rd being the one WATCHED).

(8) The big "UH OH" red flag was obviously the 14 strikeouts from the Sabine lineup. However, the 2nd "UH OH" red flag came from the 12 runners LOB (left on base). Although the Nationals won, that's still a lot of "ducks" to leave on the pond. Of course, a lot of those "ducks" were put there by the 16 walks given up by Winona pitchers.

Here's a stat that you don't see often. In fact, it reminds me of the 1970's when the Texas Rangers brought up David Clyde directly from high school to start in the majors. In the top of the 1st inning of his debut, he walked the first 3 batters ..... then struck out the next 3 hitters. Spectacular, but not something you want every inning. Here's what happened Friday night for Sabine in just 3 innings ...

.............. Walks ........ KO's ...... Runs ..... LOB
2nd inng .... 5 .............. 3 ........... 2 .......... 3
4th inng ..... 3 .............. 3 ........... 1 .......... 3
6th inng ..... 3 .............. 3 ............--.......... 3
................. 11 .............. 9 ........... 3 .......... 9

For those of you who let your kids participate in this every year, how late do your teams schedule practice. This year my daughter wanted to sign up so we got her signed up and ready to go. I go a surprise to find out that her practices will be from 8 P.M. to 9 P.M. Mind you this is for a first grader. I always try to get my kids in the bed around 9 P.M. so that they are not so difficult to get up the next morning and so they will not be so sleepy the next day. I know that they are sharing the gym with the higher grade levels and have taken that into consideration. I just wonder if it is customary that they have practices so late in the evening. I am debating about taking her out even though I have already spent the money because I think that it is simply too late for a child her age. By the time she was to get home and take a bath it could be 10:30 - 11:00 P.M. before she gets in the bed!

Gladewater Baseball Clinic Information

Members,

I received this by u2u and I'm posting for those interested.

David Smoak

-----

This is being hosted by First Baptist Church-Gladewater.

Bro. Ellis Hayden of the FBC has Coach Sam Blackmon of the ETBU Tigers bringing his entire roster over to Gladewater to do a 1 day clinic for the area youth. Last year it was not advertised very well and the attendance was low.

This is really something to see. The ETBU team arrives on the Team bus dressed in full Game Day gear. Watching the kids faces as they see a "big ball player" is great.

Anyway, just wanted to see what would be the best way to get this info out to the right audience. The FBC is going to do flyers and Newspaper ads but I wanted to see if we could do better than that.

DATE: March 22nd
TIME: 3PM
PLACE: Gladewater Youth Baseball Fields - South Loop 485 in Gladewater

FEE: Will be 15 to 20 dollars to cover cost incurred.

Hotdogs and Drinks will be included.

Anything that you might be able to do to promote this event or any suggestions you may have for us to do the same would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel Patterson

Baeball coaches hurting young pitchers arms

I was at a select tournament in South Texas this past weekend and a "coach" of one team kept telling his pitcher "make sure you keep your elbow above your shoulder". After talking to some parents, I found out this was the young man's first game with this team. This kid had very nice arm action, at least at the start of the game. By the third inning, he was all over the place, and ended up leaving the game in that same inning holding his now sore arm. Coaches PLEASE do not tell your pitchers to get their elbow at or above the shoulder. This causes impingement of the rotator cuff!!! Parents, if you hear a coach telling him this, find another team ASAP! So many good arms are ruined this way. Arm action should be free and easy, like a whip. With all the information available now, it is borderline criminal to be teaching this way.
