Stop Complaining Day

oh, YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, A Congressman With a Solution: Stop Complaining So Much

Sure, the economy ####. Unemployment is at least 10.2% and, yes, if you include part-time workers who would rather have full-time jobs it may be over 17%. The government is showering our cash on Wall Street and burning through piles of our children and grandchildren’s money “saving” phantom jobs in Congressional Districts that don’t exist.

Oh yeah, and Congress is planning for a government take-over of our health care system, legislating higher energy prices and raising taxes. Sheesh, no wonder we’re feeling blue.

Well, not to worry, three-term Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) has found a solution: Stop Complaining So Much. Rep. Cleaver is currently circulating a “Dear Colleague” letter, seeking co-sponsors for House Concurrent Resolution 155, designating the day before Thanksgiving as the official “Complaint Free Wednesday.”

His letter here:
http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/18/finall...man-with-a-so...

Will the real Che please stand up.

The Real Che Guevara
by Guy Sorman Guy Sorman, a French philosopher and economist, is the author of Empire of Lies. 28.01.2009 Keywords:

PARIS - Hollywood history is often nonsensical, but filmmakers usually have the good sense not to whitewash killers and sadists. Steven Soderbergh's new film about Che Guevara, however, does that, and more.

Che the revolutionary romantic, as depicted by Benecio del Toro in Soderbergh's film, never existed. That hero of the left, with his hippie hair and beard, an image now iconic on t-shirts and coffee mugs around the world, is a myth concocted by Fidel Castro's propagandists - something of a cross between Don Quixote and Robin Hood.

Like those tall tales, Fidel's myth of Che bears a superficial resemblance to historical facts, but the real story is far darker. Some Robin Hood probably did brutalize the rich and, to cover his tracks, give some of his loot to the poor. In medieval Spain, Quixote-like knights probably did roam the countryside, ridding it not of dragons but of the land's few remaining Muslims.

The same goes for the legendary Che. No teenager in rebellion against the world or his parents seems able to resist Che's alluring image. Just wearing a Che t-shirt is the shortest and cheapest way to appear to be on the right side of History.

What works for teenagers also seems to work with forever-young movie directors. In the 1960's, the Che look, with beard and beret, was at least a glib political statement. Today, it is little more than a fashion accoutrement that inspires a big-budget Hollywood epic. Are Che theme parks next?

But once there was a real Che Guevara: he is less well known than the fictional puppet that has replaced reality. The true Che was a more significant figure than his fictional clone, for he was the incarnation of what revolution and Marxism really meant in the twentieth century.

Che was no humanist. No communist leader, indeed, ever held humanist values. Karl Marx certainly was not one. True to their movement's founding prophet, Stalin, Mao, Castro, and Che held no respect for life. Blood needed to be shed if a better world was to be baptized. When criticized by one of his early companions for the death of millions during the Chinese revolution, Mao observed that countless Chinese die everyday, so what did it matter?

Likewise, Che could kill with a shrug. Trained as a medical doctor in Argentina, he chose not to save lives but to suppress them. After he seized power, Che put to death five hundred "enemies" of the revolution without trial, or even much discrimination.

Castro, no humanist himself, did his best to neutralize Guevara by appointing him Minister for Industry. As could be expected, Che applied Soviet policies to the Cubans: agriculture was destroyed and ghost factories dotted the landscape. He did not care about Cuba's economy or its people: his purpose was to pursue revolution for its own sake, whatever it meant, like art for art's sake.

Indeed, without his ideology, Che would have been nothing more than another serial killer. Ideological sloganeering allowed him to kill in larger numbers than any serial killer could imagine, and all in the name of justice. Five centuries ago, Che probably would have been one of those priest/soldiers exterminating Latin America's natives in the name of God. In the name of History, Che, too, saw murder as a necessary tool of a noble cause.

But suppose we judge this Marxist hero by his own criteria: did he actually transform the world? The answer is yes - but for the worse. The communist Cuba he helped to forge is an undisputed and unmitigated failure, much more impoverished and much less free than it was before its "liberation." Despite the social reforms the left likes to trumpet about Cuba, its literacy rate was higher before Castro came to power, and racism against the black population was less pervasive. Indeed, Cuba's leaders today are far more likely to be white than they were in Batista's day.

Beyond Cuba, the Che myth has inspired thousands of students and activists across Latin America to lose their lives in foolhardy guerrilla struggles. The left, inspired by the siren call of Che, chose armed struggle instead of elections. By doing so, it opened the way to military dictatorship. Latin America is not yet cured of these unintended consequences of Guevarism.

Indeed, fifty years after Cuba's revolution, Latin America remains divided. Those nations that rejected Che's mythology and chose the path of democracy and the free market, such as Brazil, Peru, and Chile, are better off than they ever were: equality, freedom, and economic progress have advanced in unity. By contrast, those nations that remain nostalgic for the cause of Che, such as Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia, are at this very moment poised on the brink of civil war.

The real Che, who spent most of his time as Castro's central banker supervising executions, deserves to be better known. Perhaps if Soderbergh's two-part Che epic succeeds at the box office, his financial backers will want to film a more truthful sequel. There is no certainly shortage of material for "Che, The Untold Story."

http://www.factsandarts.com/articles/the-real-che-guevara/

Fort Hood and the Quran

This item is available on the Apologetics Press Web site at: http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/240262

AP Content :: In the News

Fort Hood and the Quran
by Dave Miller, Ph.D.

U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan “cleaned out his apartment, gave leftover frozen broccoli to one neighbor and called another to thank him for his friendship—common courtesies and routines of the departing soldier” (Baker and Blackledge, 2009). Shortly thereafter, he opened up on his fellow Fort Hood soldiers, killing 14 (a pregnant mother was among those killed) and wounding many others. Mainstream media outlets, and even some Muslim groups, were quick to assure Americans that the incident had nothing to do with Hasan’s religious views (“U.S. Muslims...,” 2009; “Military Experts...,” 2009; Brown, 2009).

This almost irrational refusal to link terrorism with Islam is apparently widespread even among mainstream Muslims (“U.S. Muslims...,” 2009). Nevertheless, some Muslims appear a little more willing to entertain the possibility that perhaps Islam and the Quran are responsible for the terrorists’ behavior: “For too long, we Muslims have been sticking fingers in our ears and chanting ‘Islam means peace’ to drown out the negative noise from our holy book. Far better to own up to it” (Manji, p. 78).

Own up to it, indeed. It may well be true that the vast majority of Muslims disapprove of the wanton acts of violence by Islamic terrorists happening around the globe. But the Quran—the holy book of Islam that 1.3 billion Muslims believe to be the word of God—is replete with explicit and implicit sanction and promotion of armed conflict, violence, and bloodshed by Muslims. Difficult to believe? Then read for yourself the following sections of the Quran from the celebrated translation by Muslim scholar Mohammed Pickthall:

Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain (Surah 47:4, emp. added).

Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors. And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers. But if they desist, then lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers. The forbidden month for the forbidden month, and forbidden things in retaliation. And one who attacketh you, attack him in like manner as he attacked you. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is with those who ward off (evil) (Surah 2:190-194, emp. added).

Warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you; but it may happen that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that ye love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knoweth, ye know not. They question thee (O Muhammad) with regard to warfare in the sacred month. Say: Warfare therein is a great (transgression), but to turn (men) from the way of Allah, and to disbelieve in Him and in the Inviolable Place of Worship, and to expel his people thence, is a greater with Allah; for persecution is worse that killing. And they will not cease from fighting against you till they have made you renegades from your religion, if they can (Surah 2:216-217, emp. added).

Muhammad was informed that warfare was prescribed for him! Though he may have hated warfare, it was actually good for him, and what he loved, i.e., non-warfare, was actually bad for him! And though under normal circumstances, fighting is not appropriate during sacred months, killing was warranted against those who sought to prevent Muslims from practicing their religion. Killing is better than being persecuted! A similar injunction states: “Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory” (Surah 22:39, emp. added). In fact, “Allah loveth those who battle for His cause in ranks, as if they were a solid structure” (Surah 61:4, emp. added).

In a surah titled “Repentance” that issues stern measures to be taken against idolaters, the requirement to engage in carnal warfare is apparent:

Freedom from obligation (is proclaimed) from Allah and His messenger toward those of the idolaters with whom ye made a treaty: Travel freely in the land four months, and know that ye cannot escape Allah and that Allah will confound the disbelievers (in His guidance). And a proclamation from Allah and His messenger to all men on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and (so is) His messenger. So, if ye repent, it will be better for you; but if ye are averse, then know that ye cannot escape Allah. Give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom to those who disbelieve. Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfill their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him). Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful (Surah 9:1-5, emp. added).

The ancient Muslim histories elaborate on the occasion of these admonitions: “[T]he idolaters were given four months’ respite to come and go as they pleased in safety, but after that God and His Messenger would be free from any obligation towards them. War was declared upon them, and they were to be slain or taken captive wherever they were found” (Lings, 1983, p. 323).

Later in the same surah, “Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the religion of truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low” (Surah 9:29, emp. added). “Those who have been given the Scripture” is a reference to Jews and Christians. The surah advocates coercion against Jews and Christians in order to physically force them to pay the jizyah—a special religious tax imposed on religious minorities (see Nasr, 2002, p. 166). Muslim translator Mohammed Pickthall explained the historical setting of this quranic utterance: “It signified the end of idolatry in Arabia. The Christian Byzantine Empire had begun to move against the growing Muslim power, and this Surah contains mention of a greater war to come, and instructions with regard to it” (p. 145). Indeed, the final verse of Surah 2 calls upon Allah to give Muslims “victory over the disbelieving folk” (vs. 286), rendered by Rodwell: “give us victory therefore over the infidel nations.” That this stance by the Quran was to be expected is evident from the formulation of the Second Pledge of Aqabah, in which the men pledged their loyalty and their commitment to protecting Muhammad from all opponents. This pledge included duties of war, and was taken only by the males. Consequently, the First Aqabah pact, which contained no mention of war, became known as the “pledge of the women” (Lings, p. 112).

Additional allusions to warfare in the Quran are seen in the surah, “The Spoils,” dated in the second year of the Hijrah (A.D. 623), within a month after the Battle of Badr:

And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah.... If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them.... And let not those who disbelieve suppose that they can outstrip (Allah’s purpose). Lo! they cannot escape. Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others beside them whom ye know not.... O Prophet! Exhort the believers to fight. If there be of you twenty stedfast they shall overcome two hundred, and if there be of you a hundred stedfast they shall overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are a folk without intelligence.... It is not for any Prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise. Had it not been for an ordinance of Allah which had gone before, an awful doom had come upon you on account of what ye took. Now enjoy what ye have won, as lawful and good, and keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful (Surah 8:39,57,59-60,65,67-69, emp. added; cf. 33:26).

Muslim scholar Pickthall readily concedes the context of these verses:

vv. 67-69 were revealed when the Prophet had decided to spare the lives of the prisoners taken at Badr and hold them to ransom, against the wish of Omar, who would have executed them for their past crimes. The Prophet took the verses as a reproof, and they are generally understood to mean that no quarter ought to have been given in that first battle (p. 144, emp. added).

So the Quran indicates that at the Battle of Badr, no captives should have been taken. The enemy should have been completely slaughtered, with no quarter given. This very fate awaited the Jewish Bani Qurayzah, when some 700 men were beheaded by the Muslims with Muhammad’s approval (Lings, p. 232). Likewise, members of a clan of the Bani Nadir were executed in Khaybar for concealing their treasure rather than forfeiting it to the Muslims (Lings, p. 267).

Another surah describes how allowances respecting the daily prayers were to be made for Muhammad’s Muslim warriors when engaged in military action:

And when ye go forth in the land, it is no sin for you to curtail (your) worship if ye fear that those who disbelieve may attack you. In truth the disbelievers are an open enemy to you. And when thou (O Muhammad) art among them and arrangest (their) worship for them, let only a party of them stand with thee (to worship) and let them take their arms. Then when they have performed their prostrations let them fall to the rear and let another party come that hath not worshipped and let them worship with thee, and let them take their precaution and their arms. Those who disbelieve long for you to neglect your arms and your baggage that they may attack you once for all. It is no sin for you to lay aside your arms, if rain impedeth you or ye are sick. But take your precaution. Lo! Allah prepareth for the disbelievers shameful punishment. When ye have performed the act of worship, remember Allah, standing, sitting and reclining. And when ye are in safety, observe proper worship. Worship at fixed hours hath been enjoined on the believers. Relent not in pursuit of the enemy (Surah 4:101-104, emp. added; cf. 73:20).

These verses show that the Quran implicitly endorses armed conflict and war to advance Islam.

Muslim historical sources themselves report the background details of those armed conflicts that have characterized Islam from its inception—including Muhammad’s own warring tendencies involving personal participation in and endorsement of military campaigns (cf. Lings, pp. 86,111). Muslim scholar Pickthall’s own summary of Muhammad’s war record is an eye-opener: “The number of the campaigns which he led in person during the last ten years of his life is twenty-seven, in nine of which there was hard fighting. The number of the expeditions which he planned and sent out under other leaders is thirty-eight” (n.d., p. xxvi).

What a contrast with Jesus—Who never once took up the sword or encouraged anyone else to do so! The one time that one of His close followers took it upon himself to do so, the disciple was soundly reprimanded and ordered to put the sword away, with the added warning: “all who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matthew 26:52). Indeed, when Pilate quizzed Jesus regarding His intentions, He responded: “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here” (John 18:36)—the very opposite of the Aqabah pact. And whereas the Quran boldly declares, “And one who attacks you, attack him in like manner as he attacked you” (Surah 2:194; cf. 22:60), Jesus counters, “But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also” and “love your enemies” (Matthew 5:39,44). The New Testament record presents a far higher, more noble and godly ethic on the matter of violence and armed conflict. In fact, the following verses demonstrate how irrevocably deep the chasm is between the Quran and the New Testament on this point:

[L]ove your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? (Matthew 5:44-46).

But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful (Luke 6:27-36).

What an amazing contrast! The New Testament says to love, bless, do good to, and pray for those who persecute you. The Quran says that “persecution is worse than killing” (Surah 2:217)—i.e., it is better to kill your persecutors than to endure their persecutions!

The standard Muslim attempt to justify the Quran’s endorsement of violence is that such violence was undertaken in self-defense (e.g., Surah 42:41). Consider the following Muslim explanation:

At the time when this surah (Surah 2—DM) was revealed at Al-Madinah, the Prophet’s own tribe, the pagan Qureysh at Mecca, were preparing to attack the Muslims in their place of refuge. Cruel persecution was the lot of Muslims who had stayed in Meccan territory or who journeyed thither, and Muslims were being prevented from performing the pilgrimage. The possible necessity of fighting had been foreseen in the terms of the oath, taken at Al-Aqabah by the Muslims of Yathrib before the Flight, to defend the Prophet as they would their own wives and children, and the first commandment to fight was revealed to the Prophet before his flight from Mecca; but there was no actual fighting by the Muslims until the battle of Badr. Many of them were reluctant, having before been subject to a rule of strict non-violence. It was with difficulty that they could accept the idea of fighting even in self-defence [sic].... (Pickthall, p. 33, emp. added).

Apart from the fact that the claim that Muhammad’s advocacy of fighting was justifiable on the ground of self-defense is contrary to the historical facts (since the wars waged by Muhammad and the territorial expansion of Islam achieved by his subsequent followers cannot all be dismissed as defensive), this explanation fails to come to grips with the propriety of shedding of blood and inflicting violence—regardless of the reason. Muslim scholar Seyyed Nasr seems unconscious of the inherent self-contradiction apparent in his own remark:

The spread of Islam occurred in waves. In less than a century after the establishment of the first Islamic society in Medina by the Prophet, Arab armies had conquered a land stretching from the Indus River to France and brought with them Islam, which, contrary to popular Western conceptions, was not, however, forced on the people by the sword (2003, p. 17, emp. added).

In other words, Muslim armies physically conquered—by military force and bloodshed—various nations, forcing the population to submit to Muslim rule, but did not require them to become Muslims! One suspects that, at the time, the distinction escaped the citizens of those conquered countries, even as it surely does the reader.

True Christianity (i.e., that which is based strictly on the New Testament) dictates peace and non-retaliatory promotion of itself. The “absolute imperative” (Rahman, 1979, p. 22) of Islam is the submission/conversion of the whole world. In stark contrast, the absolute imperative of New Testament Christianity is the evangelism of the whole world, i.e., the dissemination of the message of salvation—whether people embrace it or not (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-47). Absolutely no coercion is admissible from the Christian (i.e., New Testament) viewpoint. The Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and all other violent activities undertaken in the name of Christ and Christianity have been in complete conflict with the teaching of the New Testament. The perpetrators acted without the authority and sanction of Christ.

Islam seeks to bring the entire world into submission to Allah and the Quran—even using jihad, coercion, and force; Christianity seeks to go into the entire world and to announce the “good news” that God loves every individual, that Jesus Christ died for the sins of everyone, and that He offers salvation, forgiveness, and reconciliation. But, each person has free choice to accept or reject without any retaliation by Christians against those who choose to reject. Jesus taught His disciples, when faced with opposition and resistance, simply to walk away: “And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet” (Matthew 10:14). In fact, on one occasion when a Samaritan village was particularly nonreceptive, some of Jesus’ disciples wished to command fire to come down from heaven to consume them! But Jesus rebuked them and said, “‘You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.’ And they went to another village” (Luke 9:55). Muhammad and the Quran stand in diametrical opposition to Jesus and the New Testament.

If the majority of Muslims were violent, that would not prove that Islam is a religion of violence. The vast majority of those who claim to be “Christian” are practicing a corrupted form of the Christian faith. So the validity of any religion is determined ultimately not by the imperfect, inaccurate practice of the religion by even a majority of its adherents, but by the official authority or standard upon which it is based, i.e., its Scriptures. The present discussion in the world regarding whether or not jihad includes physical force in the advancement of Islam is ultimately irrelevant (cf. Nasr, 2002, pp. 256-266). The Quran unquestionably endorses violence, war, and armed conflict. No wonder the Muslims who perpetrated suicide bombings, America’s 9/11, and yes, the Fort Hood massacre, manifest a maniacal, reckless abandon in their willingness to die by sacrificing their lives in order to kill as many “infidels” (especially Israelis, Brits, and Americans) as possible. They have read the following:

Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks.... And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain. He will guide them and improve their state, and bring them in unto the Garden [Paradise—DM] which He hath made known to them (Surah 47:4-6, emp. added).

O ye who believe! Be not as those who disbelieved and said of their brethren who went abroad in the land or were fighting in the field: If they had been (here) with us they would not have died or been killed.... And what though ye be slain in Allah’s way or die therein? Surely pardon from Allah and mercy are better than all that they amass. What though ye be slain or die, when unto Allah ye are gathered?.... So those who...fought and were slain, verily I shall remit their evil deeds from them and verily I shall bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow—a reward from Allah (Surah 3:156-158,195, emp. added).

Even if the vast majority of Muslims in the world reject violence and refrain from terrorist activity (which is, seemingly, the case), it is still a fact that the Quran (as well as the example of Muhammad himself!) endorses the advancement of Islam through physical force. While Muslim apologist Seyyed Hossein Nasr insists that “the traditional norms based on peace and openness to others” characterize true Islam and the majority of Muslims, in contradistinction, he freely admits that at times Islam “has been forced to take recourse to physical action in the form of defense” (Nasr, 2002, pp. 112,110). This concession cannot be successfully denied in view of the Quran’s own declarations. Hence, the Muslim is forced to maintain the self-contradictory position that, yes, there have been times that Islam has been properly violent and, yes, the Quran does endorse violence, but, no, most Muslims are not violent, and then only in self-defense. As reprehensible and cowardly as Islamic terrorists have shown themselves to be in recent years, an honest reading of the Quran leads one to believe that they, at least, are more consistent with, and true to, their own Scriptures—as revolting an idea as that may be.

REFERENCES
Baker, Mike and Brett J.
Economy

I get weekly reports from Vanguard about the economy. Does anyone really have a clue? How about those stimulus jobs? Exactly how many jobs did the $780 billion + ( anyone's guess exactly how much) stimulus create or save? How about the jobless figures Vanguard mentions? Is the stimulus balancing these figures?

Will Wall Street and the banksters abuse our economy again as they have done time after time should the economy turn around nationwide? Do taxpayers "have" to pay back that stimulus and let's not forget TARP. Can we just print money from thin air and forget about these debts only too happy to have bailed out the very criminals that got our economy where it is?

Has anyone thought the problems we have today are a result of the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913? Will our problems today just go away?

I hear people speak of the economy in Texas. I can only hope we continue to do better than other areas of the country. Some weeks ago I read estimates of one thousand individuals moving to Texas every week from other parts of the country. Can Texas support an even larger portion of the U.S. populous?

Does the U.S. trade deficit matter?

Vanguard
November 13, 2009
Economic Week in Review: Quiet week produces positive signs

Economists were given a respite from last week's packed agenda, as only two reports were released this week. The Department of Commerce announced that the U.S. trade deficit widened in September to $36.5 billion. Meanwhile, initial jobless claims fell by 12,000, to 502,000, suggesting that the labor market is starting to improve. With little economic news to digest, the S&P 500 Index rose 2.3% to 1,093 (for a year-to-date total return of about 24%) for the week ended November 13. The yield of the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 11 basis points to 3.43% (for a year-to-date increase of 118 basis points).
U.S. trade gap widens

The U.S. trade deficit widened to $36.5 billion in September, a significant increase over economists' forecasts of $31.6 billion and August's revised $30.8 billion deficit. A 2.9% increase in exports was more than offset by a 5.8% rise in imports. Factors contributing to the increased trade gap include the trade deficit in goods, which widened 13.4% in September, and net imports of petroleum, which grew 24%.

For the third time in the last four months, however, both exports and imports rose simultaneously, which could signal that the worldwide recession is winding down as consumers become more active, according to Vanguard economist Roger Aliaga-Diaz. "In general, a widening trade deficit is consistent with economic recovery," said Mr. Aliaga-Diaz. "This is particularly so when the increase in imports is related to business spending on capital goods and raw materials (including oil), an important precondition for future growth."
Falling jobless claims bring hope to labor markets

Initial jobless claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 12,000, to 502,000, for the week ended November 7. Despite continued increases in the unemployment rate, the number of layoffs has been slowing since March, when initial jobless claims peaked at 674,000. This news and the announcement that continuing claims fell 139,000 for the week ended October 31 suggest that labor markets are beginning to stabilize.

"Companies are not cutting jobs at the rate seen during the recession," said Mr. Aliaga-Diaz. "This is an important first step for the recovery, but the improvement in the jobs front is expected to come only at a measured pace as businesses start gradually hiring more permanent workers over the course of the next couple of years."
The economic week ahead

A number of key economic reports are scheduled for release next week, including retail sales and business inventories on Monday, the Producer Price Index and industrial production on Tuesday, and the Consumer Price Index and new residential construction on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Conference Board releases the performance of its leading economic indicators for the month of October.

Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state, and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you", he said on National Television

"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia: one the Australian law and another Islamic law that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option", Costello said.

Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country. Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off. Basically people who don't want to be Australians, and who don't want, to live by Australian values and understand them, well then, they can basically clear off", he said.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote: "IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians."

"However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the 'politically correct' crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia." "However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand." "This idea of Australia being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. And as Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle."

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom"

"We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society .. Learn the language!"

"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture."

"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us."

"If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like "A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means, keep your culture, but do not force it on others.

"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,

'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'."

"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted."

I need to edit this a bit.... http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/australia.asp

Still a FANTASTIC IDEA!

Couple no jobs with high gas prices and you have a sick America. So, what should maybe bobomba do to help us? Well, how about opening up some drilling here in the US or off shore? Put folks to work, even a glut in the oil market, cheaper gas, people spend, food, energy, everything cheaper? Well bobombless could stick it to the speculators that all democrats seem to loathe for making money, but who really are a huge part of (We all know dems aint that poor) the democrat portfolios. I also pray for the wounded. May God heal and and restore you.

I also want to honor all the heroes that were involved in saving others at great risk to themselves. I hope they will be formally honored by our nation as the heroes that they proved to be. You can read about the story of some of the heroic acts at the Fort Hood shooting here. It really does not surprise me that a mass shooting at an Army base would bring out many heroes. Our military men and women are doing heroic acts every day.

Next, I want to say that I think the policies of carrying and possessing weapons on our military bases need to be changed. On bases full of men and women trained in armed combat usually only the military police are armed (not long ago even they did not even have bullets in their guns). That policy exposes everyone on base as easy targets and sitting ducks for any terrorist action or person who wants to carry out his own vendetta against our military because of foreign war actions. Most would not even think of disarming the police of their cities when they off duty because we realize that some criminals might take revenge on them or their families. Nevertheless, military policy about weapons on base is always political correct but stupid and dangerous in light of today's realities. We send our military to fight against radical Islam and then have military base policies here that disarm them and expose them in high densities so they can become sitting duck targets for terrorists. Not to even mention that all Americans have a Constitutional right and duty to provide for the common defense from the predators of the world.

Now that one killer demonstrated just how easy it is to just start murdering people like sitting ducks on our high density military bases our military leaders had better wake up. There are plenty of people watching and waiting and willing to be a mass murderer for Allah. Lets not give them sitting duck targets on our own military bases! We are fighting a war against a radical ideology that thinks killing for Allah is honorable and these people are everywhere, they are even on our own military bases. It it is time that our military leaders realized this and allowed all military to possess and carry firearms on its bases.

Finally, I have a few word for our Commander-in-Chief… On second thought, I think Not even shocked and Obama's frighting insensitivity articles say it all quite adequately. I just might add that Obama and most in our government need to wake up about Islam. They need to quit acting like Islam is a religion of peace toward non-Muslims. Anyone that reads Islam's own doctrines knows that Islam it is not a religion of peace toward others. Anyone that looks at the many violent Islamic actions around the world and still say that Islam is a religion of peace either has their head in the sand or they are just plain liars.

By the way, those that are saying that this man had some kind of post dramatic stress disorder are ####, they are the ones with their head in the sand. The man was a shrink he was not in combat and his anti American rhetoric was well known.

In contrast to Obama. Here is a very appropriate response on the Fort Hood shootings and the enemies within from a real American patriot named Chuck Norris.

http://www.thepropheticyears.com/wordpress...-and-obama.html

Stop Nationalized Healthcare From Reaching Texas

CALL TO ACTION: Stop Nationalized Healthcare From Reaching Texas
by Debra Medina on Nov 08, 2009

We Texans face our biggest threat since the New Deal. An overreaching federal government is poised to force itself into our lives in the most invasive and damaging way; into our very well-being. I applaud concerned citizens, caring parents, determined Texans for calling your U.S. Congressmen and Senators and those throughout the country who “ride the fence.” We must continue our pressure on the U.S. Senate to halt this monstrosity. You and I know the appropriate course of action for Congress and the President because we know and understand the constitution and the implications this bill has for our state and our lives. Good medical decisions are made between the doctor and patient, not by the government.

The fact that We Texans have been forced to repeatedly contact our “elected representatives” highlights the lack of leadership in the Republican Party and an ongoing constitutional ignorance or disregard by those elected representatives. We Texans have an absolute right to sovereignty. The tenth amendment provides that “the powers not delegated to the United States by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” We Texans MUST stand up to this invasion of our private medical records, explosive expansion of the national debt and our right to determine our health care decisions.

In the event that Obama/PelosiCare passes the Senate, the State of Texas should refuse to comply through nullification and interposition. Nullification and interposition remain viable, legal alternatives to independence, despite the unwillingness of our current leadership to stand up to Washington and the big money donors who resist any conflict with their buddies in Washington. We are Texans. We are bold and we are going to stand up for our rights.

With our porous borders, we cannot afford yet another incentive for more illegal immigration. Our current federally mandated entitlement programs, which violate our state’s sovereignty every day, serve as a magnet to those in other countries who come to Texas for “freebies”. Do we need a stronger magnet? Our partially federally funded county hospitals bear much of the burden and provide care to illegal immigrants and those who have failed to provide for their own health care needs as it is. Do we Texans want to increase our dependence upon the largess of the federal government? Once Obamacare establishes itself in the state of Texas, ridding ourselves of this burden will become nearly impossible. We Texans must act now to cut this abuse of power off at the knees.

We Texans have a plan of action. I am sending an open letter to Governor Perry, members of the Texas House and Senate and Attorney General Abbott demanding that a special session be called and that legal action be taken in the federal courts. The Medina campaign is already taking proactive steps to protect Texans. We encourage you to contact your state representative and senator and the Governor to encourage them to begin the work necessary to nullify this unconstitutional legislation. Texas will take care of Texans. You can sign up for our updates here http://www.medinafortexas.com/join-us.php. Join us as we reclaim our sovereignty and assert our independence as free people of the United States and Texas.

Debra Medina

Republican Candidate for Governor 2010

There seems to be lots of concern about backlash against the Muslims in the Military. Ive heard that there has been no room for racism in the Military for quite some time. the Military has done an ecellent job of weeding out those who show their prejudices. So why the worry now? Maybe because those doing the warning really know the Muslims in the military are or could be terrorists?

I would be looking at how the government was fixing to take away my livlihood. Notice I said successful, as some might want to stay and become government employees. (Hey civil service guys, instead of GS or WG, would Drs be a new category-- MS?)
If any of you have been to the specialty hospitals in Dallas or Houston, you will notice many foreigners there, mostly the rich out of Mexico. So if I was a Doc fixing to have the rug jerked out from under me, I would explore Mexico as an option. Maybe a resort area, away from crime and easy access to an airport, for Americans fed up with socialized med care to fly in for care. Probally cut a deal with the Federales to care for some poor, but keep your paying customers coming to pay for it. Probally lots less regs and maybe with no FDA, access to experimental drugs. Would it work?

New Jersey - no right to own handguns

This might get a little willy nilly with a new governor and a new attorney general....

------

N.J. Court Says Americans Have No Right To Buy Handguns

A New Jersey appeals court has concluded that Americans have no Second Amendment right to buy a handgun.

In a case decided last week, the superior court upheld a state law saying that nobody may possess "any handgun" without obtaining law enforcement approval and permission in advance.

That outcome might seem like something of a surprise, especially after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year in the D.C. v. Heller case that the Second Amendment guarantees "the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation."

But New Jersey Appellate Division Judge Stephen Skillman wrote on behalf of a unanimous three-judge panel that Heller "has no impact upon the constitutionality of" the state law.

That's because, Skillman said, the Supreme Court did not strike down the District of Columbia's de facto handgun ban but instead simply ordered the city to issue a permit. In other words, while Americans may have the right in general to possess arms, the exact contours of that right have not been mapped, especially as the Second Amendment applies to state laws. (The court's majority opinion last year said: "We therefore assume that petitioners' issuance of a license will satisfy respondent's prayer for relief and do not address the licensing requirement.")

Look for the Supreme Court to revisit this question in a few months when it hears a case called McDonald v. Chicago. It's a constitutional challenge to Chicago's restrictive gun laws, which prohibit anyone from possessing firearms -- even in their homes -- "unless such person is the holder of a valid registration certificate for such firearm."

New Jersey's laws are similar. They say: "No person shall sell, give, transfer, assign or otherwise dispose of, nor receive, purchase, or otherwise acquire a handgun unless the purchaser, assignee, donee, receiver or holder... has first secured a permit to purchase a handgun as provided by this section."

Another section dealing with licensing says: "No person of good character and good repute in the community in which he lives, and who is not subject to any of the disabilities set forth in this section or other sections of this chapter, shall be denied a permit to purchase a handgun or a firearms purchaser identification card, except as hereinafter set forth." Some of the exceptions involve criminal records, for instance.

What prompted the current lawsuit was a request for a handgun purchase permit that Anthony Dubov submitted to the East Windsor Chief of Police. The police chief denied Dubov's request without giving any reason, in what the appeals court later ruled was a violation of state law. The current East Windsor police chief is William Spain.

Oddly, the trial judge upheld that denial, without asking the police chief to testify to explain himself (another violation of state law) and after taking the unusual step of contacting Dubov's previous employers to ask about his background.

Dubov's attorney, Michael Nieschmidt, argued that the state licensing scheme was unconstitutionally vague and therefore violated the Second Amendment.

Skillman concluded that while the Second Amendment doesn't apply, state law and precedent nevertheless required that Dubov receive more due process than he did. The appeals court wrote: "Accordingly, the trial court's affirmance of the police chief's denial of appellant's application for a firearms purchase permit is reversed, and the case is remanded for an evidentiary hearing in conformity with this opinion."

Read the article HERE: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/10/28/ta...es/entry54406...

The Next Government Bailout

From: Dick Armey <darmey@freedomworks.org>
Subject: The Next Government Bailout

Hello ,You know the list. First, there was the mortgage bailout that rewarded
reckless borrowers and high-flying lenders who made bad decisions when the
market was booming; Then taxpayers had to endure the TARP abomination as we were
told Wall Street needed the money; Then there was Obama's infamous "stimulus"
plan; more easy money for irresponsible banks and businesses; And then the
auto-bailout turned a failing General Motors into "Government Motors" overnight.
Think Obama and his liberal allies in Congress have had enough? Think again!

FreedomWorks has learned that big businesses are negotiating their next deal
right now behind closed doors;the "Energy Bailout," which will benefit a handful
of rent-seeking companies such as Duke Energy and Caterpillar Construction
through the passage of a massive cap and trade energy rationing scheme that will
help their bottom-lines, but stick taxpayers with higher taxes and higher
energy prices. The cap and trade bill has already passed the House of
Representatives and companion legislation has been introduced in the Senate as
well. Should it pass, cap and trade would hit American families hard, with costs
estimated as high as $1,300 per household by the year 2015. In addition, cap and
trade would stifle economic growth and weaken American businesses. Still, some
companies like Duke, Caterpillar, and others that belong to the so-called USCAP
(U.S. Climate Action Program) coalition are actively working with Obama and
others on the Left to pass a bill because they have negotiated sweetheart deals
that could mean literally hundreds of billions of dollars to their
businesses;never mind how it will increase energy costs, hurt jobs, and weaken
our economy as a whole. This is not unlike many of the banks and gold-plated
investment houses that worked to game the system and carve out their own deals
during the debates over TARP and the stimulus. At FreedomWorks we support
capitalism and entrepreneurship and want to see American businesses and industry
succeed, but through the free market and not through high-paid lobbyists
negotiating self-interested backroom deals in Congress. Cap and trade amounts to
nothing more than just another taxpayer-funded bailout and its time to tell
Congress enough is enough!

Sincerely, Dick ArmeyChairman, FreedomWorks

Joey Seeber Not Running vs Leo Berman

According to tylerpaper.com, Joey Seeber has announced that he will not go head to head vs Leo Berman in the upcoming election for state representative. He said that he doesn't want to split the Republican party at this time.

Bad move Joey...Berman needs to go. Berman isn't that bad, but he lied about term limits and I have exercised my right to limit his terms in the past two elections because of this. I like Berman's stance on illegal immigration, but he is very much against teachers and public education. As a teacher, I think that he's chosen to align his ideology more closely with the national GOP instead of looking at ways to impact education locally for his constituents. There aren't many liberal teachers in East Texas that he needs to go butt heads with. He could be a real champion for teacher if he didn't listen to Michael Steele and Rush Limbaugh! Kevin Eltife doesn't have a problem sticking up for us and finding out what we need!

I mean the one remaining gay one hates that the other has become hetreosexual, therfore that is hate based upon sexual orientation?

To me, it literally slaps the faces of those who gave their life for this country, and our/their freedoms.... makes me sick to my stomach!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5ZE8uQFM7o...player_embedded

One of the 20 finalists in health care video contest run by Barack Obama’s campaign arm features a mural of an America flag splattered with health care graffiti until it’s covered completely by black paint.

In the video – which is accompanied by the sound of a heart monitor pumping and then flat-lining – words such as “pre-existing conditions,” “homeless” and “death panel” ultimately obliterate the flag, which reappears on screen seconds later with the words “Health Will Bring Our Country Back to Life” on the blue field where the 50 stars usually are.

According to the Organizing for American Web site, the 20 finalists in the “Health Reform Video Challenge” were chosen by a panel of “qualified” Democratic National Committee “employee judges.”

A contestant whose video didn’t make the final-20 cut complains that a video “defacing the flag” won’t do much to help President Barack Obama or the Democrats sell health care reform.

“They should never pick that,” said the contestant, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “It makes the Democrats look really, really bad.”

A spokesman for Organizing for America said the group was not prepared to provide immediate comment on the video, which, according to the OFA Web site, was produced by Daniel Lahoda and Saber.

According to the OFA Web site, the 20 finalists will be judged by the public and a panel of experts that includes DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe, Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), singer will.i.am and Hollywood stars Rosario Dawson and Dule Hill.

House Judiciary Committee

I think this is mostly pertaining to the NFL but either way I'm getting sick and tired of the government sticking its nose into football. We have much more serious problems than whether or not multiple concussions while playing football results in mental disability later in life.

Furthermore, I think it is pretty much clear when you put on the pads and strap on the helmet that you are succeptable to such injuries and its your choice to play or not. Its like people who smoke, you know there's a chance your gonna get lung cancer, and its your choice whether you smoke or not.

What is your opinion about the government continuously sticking its nose in football affairs?
