East Texas Vs. CenTex - Longview, Gilmer, Sulphur Springs

Here is a WacoTrib article regarding the uphill climbs the Centex playoff Teams face this week.

Central Texas football teams face King Kong-like opponents this week

var buzzSiteID = 'waco_tribuneh140';	var articleURI = location.href;	var articleLocation = articleURI.replace(/(http:\/\/.*?\/).*?(\/.*)/, '$1services$2');	var yahooBuzzArticleId = buzzSiteID + ':' + articleLocation;
Click-2-Listen

Buzz up!By Chad Conine Tribune-Herald staff writer
Friday, November 20, 2009

Some teams on the high school football landscape stand taller than others.

In fact, each fall there’s a team or two in each classification — Six-Man Division II through Class 5A Division I — that dominate the landscape with chilling ferocity. They are the King Kongs of the playoffs.

And this week, a bunch of Central Texas teams play the role of the relatively tiny fighter plane trying to bring down the monster.

MEET THE MONSTERS
Five Central Texas teams face opponents this week that are undefeated, highly ranked, defending state champs, perennial powers or a combination thereof.

MIDWAY (9-2) vs. #2 LONGVIEW (10-1)

• The Panthers want revenge, but it will be tough against the powerful Lobos, who lost in the Class 4A Division I title game last season after slipping by Midway on a controversial 2-point conversion. 2 p.m. Saturday at Kincaide Stadium in Dallas

UNIVERSITY (7-4) vs. SULPHUR SPRINGS (8-3)

• The Trojans’ comeback season faces an uphill climb against the defending 4A Division II champions. Sulphur Springs is not quite as strong this season, but all of its defeats came against teams that won playoff games last week. 7 p.m. today at Corsicana

MEXIA (9-2) vs. #2 CARTHAGE (11-0)

• The Blackcats have been arguably the area’s best 3A team throughout the season, but they run right into the defending state champs, who denied Celina its record ninth title in the 3A Division II championship game last season. 7:30 p.m. today at Forney

LA VEGA (7-4) vs. #1 GILMER (11-0)

• The Pirates rallied to beat Athens last week, only to run into the top-ranked Buckeyes, who were the only team to stay within double digits of Carthage in the playoffs last season. 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Mesquite

PENELOPE (11-0) vs. CALVERT (10-0)

• The Wolverines grabbed their first playoff win last week, but now face six-man power Calvert, which has won in this round of the playoffs seven of the last eight postseasons. 7:30 p.m. today at Moody

District 19-3A foes La Vega and Mexia are matched up against the top two Class 3A teams in the state this week. Lorenzo Davis (above) and the Pirates face No. 1 Gilmer on Saturday in Mesquite. (Miguel Hurtado photo)

Trae Davis (below) and Mexia take on No. 2 Carthage tonight in Forney.
(Rod Aydelotte photo)
University quarterback Randy Price leads the Trojans in an area-round battle against defending 4A Division II champion Sulphur Springs at 7 tonight in Corsciana. (Rod Aydelotte photo)
Like the La Vega Pirates, who will crank up their propeller and fly towards 3A’s No. 1-ranked Gilmer on Saturday.

“You can’t help but see it as that,” La Vega coach Willie Williams said. “In 27 years, I haven’t seen as much talent on one side of the ball as Gilmer has on offense.”

Williams added that the Buckeyes aren’t too shabby on defense either.

But it’s easy to see Williams’ point. A glance through the schedule shows that Gilmer has rolled every team in its path, winning by at least 18 points — and usually much more — and scoring more than 50 in six games.

Though the Pirates , which play the Buckeyes at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium, aren’t alone in their monumental task this weekend.

Mexia faces the No. 2-ranked team in 3A, the Carthage Bulldogs, at 7:30 tonight in Forney.

Midway gets its rematch with No. 2 Longview at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dallas Kincaide Stadium.

University meets up with defending 4A Division II state champion Sulphur Springs at 7 tonight in Corsicana.

Even Penelope, which is undefeated through 11 games, has a huge obstacle in its path as the Wolverines play Calvert at 7:30 tonight in Moody.

In the sixmanfootball.com rankings, it would appear that No. 13 Penelope enters with a fighting chance against No. 10 Calvert. But the Wolverines, who won their first playoff game last week since launching a six-man program in 2001, are still a fledgling playoff team while Calvert is a perennial playoff bully.

“The last time we played them, they were No. 1 or No. 2 and we had seven players,” Penelope coach Corey McAdams said, recalling the 2003 regular-season game.

The Indians won that game, 68-19, but the Penelope folks considered it a small victory to score 19 points. That’s the kind of thing the Wolverines held on to during an 0-10 campaign that fall.

In the win-or-go-home atmosphere of the playoffs, it’s unlikely Penelope or any of the five-pack of Central Texas teams facing their own King Kongs will be satisfied with moral victories this week.

They all have carefully designed game plans, which have a common theme: Hold on to the football, gain first downs and hang in there.

“We can’t do what’s hurt us all year and turn the ball over,” Midway coach Kent Bachtel said. “Our offense is going to have to stay on the field two or three first downs at a time.”

Bachtel and University coach Matt Carroll have different playbooks, but they’re on the same page.

“Our big thing, offensively we have to hold on to the football and not have any three-and-outs,” Carroll said. “We need to move the chains and get a big play when we can.”

It’s hard to predict if any of the Cental Texas underdogs will pull off upsets this weekend. Though it’s a good bet that one or two of them will at least put a scare into the favorite.

Monsters feel the heat

And sometimes, startling the monster can be the first step toward toppling it.

Robinson coach Brian Lewis’ Rockets team upset heavily favored Palestine on the road to the 3A Division I title game in 2006. He saw his squad handle adversity that night, which proved to be a huge factor.

“The pressure is on them,” Lewis said. “When they do make a mistake, they tend to panic a little bit. We had been through some of that stuff already that season, but those teams that haven’t lost a game, you don’t know how those kids are going to react.”

Last season, Mexia came close to derailing Gilmer, though the Buckeyes ultimately prevailed, 50-36. Since then, the Blackcats have been aiming for a state title, Mexia coach Lee Wiginton said.

And the Blackcats know that means facing and defeating opponents that some would view as unbeatable.

“The way it played out, it looks like Carthage is the team that somebody is going to have to beat to win it,” Wiginton said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re playing them in the second round or the fourth round. If you don’t beat them, you don’t win it.”

Whether that reality causes a knot in the stomach or a free-and-easy feeling probably varies from player to player.

No doubt there will be some knock out punches thrown by the big brutes this weekend.

But then again, perhaps an underdog will find a way to be the last man standing.

“You’ve got some David vs. Goliath’s,” Bachtel said. “I just hope we bring the right rock.”

cconine@wacotrib.com

13-4A and 14-4A fans UNITE!

OK..... the time has come. We are ONE. We are East Texas and we want to show some solidarity.

Four big games this week. If your team isn't playing....then pick a game that interests you, and go pull for your local team!!!

One of the things that sticks out in my mind is the solidarity from East Texans when one of their own does well.

I'll NEVER forget the 2004 state championship game when Marshall was playing Ennis. Right in front of us was a group of about 10 guys from Jacksonville. They were cheering for Marshall like they had been born and raised there. I saw fans from Longview, Kilgore, and Hallsville that day too. It was amazing!!! The end result?? Marshall's side of Texas Stadium had about 15,000 people sitting on it. There is no way Marshall could ever have 15,000 people at a game without the help of a lot of other fans from East Texas.

We saw it again in 2005 in the title game.

I've always loved going to Longview playoff games through the years when Marshall wasn't playing at the same time. I've been to some Kilgore and Hallsville playofs games through the years as well. Everytime I go to one of those games I see fans from other schools from their district or surrounding areas.

The pride of wearing my Mav T shirt and sitting with Lobo fans/Kilgore fans/Hallsville fans to cheer them on to victory is special. Trust me! If you've never done it....it's unreal how connected you can become to your "rival".

With that said..... we have 4 great games this week involving one of our own.

Waco Midway Vs. Longview (Sat 2pm in Dallas)
Waxahachie Vs. Texas High (Sat 2PM in Royse City)
Marshall Vs. Corsicana (Fri 7:30 at Rose Stadium)
Waco University Vs. Sulphur Springs (Fri 7PM in Corsicana)

Come on Hallsville, Pine Tree, Mt. Pleasant, Kilgore, Nac, Henderson, Whitehouse, J-ville, Lindale...... go support these teams!!!! I don't think the size of the crowd affects the outcome of games.....but if a team walks out of the lockeroom and sees their opposition have 3 or 4 times the crowd of their own fans.....I think it gets into their heads.

See ya'll this weekend....... and NEXT weekend!!!!!

Good luck to all four teams of 13-4A!!!!

I was looking through all the state polls and it looks like East Texas has a better than average chance to bring home state titles in all of the classes 1A-4A.
Bill Harper retires at Nacogdoches...

Bill Harper, who has been a head football coach in Marshall and most recently in Nacogdoches has announced his retirement.

Harper told David Smoak on Wednesday night, "I've retired before but came back and I'm glad I did, but this time I think it's official and I'm going back to fishing."

Harper went 26-25 in five years in Nacogdoches with one playoff appearance (2006) but the Dragons were 3-7 in 2009, "I felt like we had things going in the right direction in Nacogdoches, but it just didn't work out so it's time for me to move on and let someone else give it a shot."

Harper was an assistant coach on the 1990 Marshall Mavericks State Championship Team, and followed Dennis Parker as head coach from 1991-2001, "There's no question being involved in that state championship season was the highlight of my career, that was an awfully special team and season."

Harper was 70-46-2 with the Mavericks and said he'll always remember his relationship with the players, "I was always proud of the players who went on to live successful lives and careers," Harper added, "I remember coaching this one young man when I was at Linden-Kildare and his name was Ronnie Calhoun, and when I was at Marshall, Calhoun came by the field house and dropped his business card on my desk and it said Dr. Ronnie Calhoun, General Practitioner. I couldn't have been more proud watching Ronnie and many others go on to lead a successful life or career."

Dfield to be topic of new Rap video

I heard today that a Rap artist and filming crew will be shooting a video in Dfield this weekend. The Tigers are said to be the topic of the video. The video will be shot at the Daingerfield football field and on Mcreynolds street. BET and MTV are said to be coming also. Man, if this is accurate info, Killer may be headed to greener pastures. This is right up his ally. Just wondering if any of the Tiger Nation have heard this and will any of you guys be making appearences? Oh and just to be clear, this is not a joke. It was the buzz at work today and came from kin of the Rapper.

There seems to be teams every year that just do not reach their full potential until they reach the playoffs. Some teams just seem to rise to th occasion when their backs are against the wall. This happens more and more each year, especially since so many make the playoffs and the two divisions. Just wanted to see what you think and what you might have as examples over the years.

(New / Old) East Texas District Re-Alignment

This posibilty that Smoak has thrown out would greatly improve football enthusiasm in BIG East Texas football again. I for one have missed the BIG matchups that mean something. If these teams matchup again, then that also means matchups between schools such as Whitehouse, Kilgore, and Jacksonville again become BIG games. Now, as things stand, these REAL class 4A games are kind of 2nd class. Put real 4A teams together that belong together, and put real 5A teams together that belong together. AKA .....REL, JT, LONGVIEW, LUFKIN, TEXAS HIGH, NAC, and MARSHALL. Then the other real East Texas 4A's can have some great battles!

A new possibility pops up in 5A and realignment

Carl Padilla at Padilla Poll does a great job covering high school sports.

He has projections each week and also does a thorough job evaluating the realignment options.

He travels throughout the state covering and watching games, including last Friday when he and I visited before the Copperas Cove-John Tyler game.

One thought he heard this past weekend was the UIL taking a very hard look at EXPANDING the number of teams in Class 5-A at 256."

If that happens, the bottom number for enrollment in 5-A would be around 2,000.

One major reason for this "thought" is trying to re-establish a Class 5-A district that is "East Texas Only."

The problem is there are only five legitimate options at the 2,000 or higher level...and Texas High is currently just below 2,000.

If this occurred, the district would be Lufkin, Texas High, JT, REL, and Longview.

The UIL wants to do everything possible to avoid the 5-team districts like the previous realignment. But, if they want to keep a district that is East Texas only, they might make an exception.

Of course, everything is speculation---but fun to discuss.

David Smoak

Might just be one of the nicest stadiums around this area. Looking from the the stands over at the indoor facilities gives the stadium that extra something! Plenty of space in the stands, now walking over to the visitors side kinda stinks, but it gives you time to enjoy your view as you walk. The video/scoreboard is very unique. Tons of animated football gestures...and an awesome replay board. Its a wonderful playoff atmosphere, and should really be considered a great place to play some football.

Stopping Steroid Use in High School Sports.

Dick Butkis has teamed up with Old Spice to educate high school kids about steroid use.

More than a half-million U.S. high school students are believed to have used
anabolic (muscle-building) steroids illegally. The fastest-growing segment is
young women. 30% of new users are young women.

Those kids don't understand the risks, and are mislead about the benefits of steroid use. So Dick Butkis and his son joined up with the men's grooming company to get teens on board and pledge against the use of Steroids.
