Okay, this is how it is at our school.
Our football team has won i think 2 games this year and like 2 games last year. Really, they try but they arent very good. It may be that we change coaches every year or we might just actually ####. But anyways, the football team and football coaches absolutly hate the band. They only talk bad about the band. The coaches even make nasty comments about the band during class! The band however, supports the football team 100% by taking the comments and playing at every football game. (which we DONT have to do.) They band just won a back to back state championship, but still we ####? I think that we are one school and if the football team looks bad then the whole school does. The players and better yet the coaches should be lifting up the band....not tearing us down.

..........Right?

Just remember a couple of things:
1.When you point at what the problem might be in your reality, realize that 3 fingers are pointing back at you.
2. Everyone knows the results have different ratings. If you will be bothered receiving an excellent rating, then don't pay the entry fee and don't go.

I think our society is reaping the aftermath of the "feel good" days. Let's give everyone a pat on the back and tell them what a wonderful job they did. Let's give everyone a ribbon, pencil, trophy no matter how much or how little work ethic was involved.

Finally, congratulations to ALL of the bands!!!
Marching band? A sport?

My daughter gave me something to think about this weekend. She asked me, "Why do people always seem to make fun of the marching bands?" Of course, the Jock in me wanted to say, "because they are nerds." BUT I DID NOT SAY IT.. lol However, I simply asked her, "What brought that on?"

Her answer shocked me a bit, because it was quite good. She made these points.

1. In some schools the marching band members get P.E. credits.
2. There are competitions for the Marching bands and they are based on physical as well as musical performance.
3. It is "really hard to carry those big instruments around."

So after making that point, she said this: "If people treated marching band as if it were a sport instead a bunch of 'band nerds' that can't do anything else, maybe more people would be into it."

So it got me to thinking about this subject. It does take physical coordination, and conditioning along with musical talent combined to do well in the marching competitions. It also takes hours upon hours of practice to truly be good, as much if not more so than the football players have to go through.

Have any of you ever been at a game and watched a band that made you stop on your way to the concession stand, or sit back down in your seat? Maybe stop a conversation to watch and listen? If so, have you considered what it takes to be that good?

It took me having a daughter in marching band to even ponder this idea.

I saved another point that my daughter made for last, and it is what really turned me around.

Marching bands and marching band competitions have been around longer than football. It was the marching bands of many armies who led the way to battle in the past. It was marching bands who kept up the morale of the troops during the Revolutionary War. And a good band can rally the players on their football team when the fans are nothing more than background noise. A good band can be a source of great pride in one's school even if the football team isn't all that good.

Sure, marching bands are not the brave men who led troops into battle these days. They are pretty much relegated to football fields and parades. Let me ask you this. How many football players would march 7 miles in asphalt while carrying a 20lb instrument (maybe something heavier), and using their breath to play it? How many could?

So is marching band a sport? Should it even be considered a sport? I'm beginning to believe so. What do you say?

Has anyone done the research and put a list together? I know Plainview (4A West Texas school) has somewhere around 70 consecutive. I've seen some of their previous contest drills and they are amazing. I've heard that some other bands have around 40, some in the 30's, etc but would love a definitive, complete list. IF it's out there. Does anyone know?

Just to let you know, our crowd really enjoyed your show. Most times, if you go to the home side as a visitor to film the band, you notice the crowd busy with refreshments or conversation. I noticed our crowd reated differently to your performance, however.
Your show had a great theme, and you sounded great. You really struck a patriotic chord with the middle number, and had people standing and applauding between songs. As someone who marched, I never saw the crowd until the end of the show, so you may not have noticed it if you were on the field.
Great Job!

Racist Band Director?

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...om.335626c.html

Mom says race cost son position of drum squad leader at North Garland High; director denies bias

05:18 PM CST on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

By HOLLY YAN / The Dallas Morning News
hyan@dallasnews.com

Wynthia Brewster claims her son should have been drum leader in North Garland High School's marching band this school year.

But when the band director chose another student, Brewster refused to accept the results. At a football game and a marching band competition, she displayed a banner that read, "BAND DIRECTOR TODD TONEY CHEATED MY SON."

After several months and after filing several complaints, Brewster still refuses to back down until either her son, Austin, gets the title of squad leader or she gets acknowledgment that the band director acted improperly.

Now the question remains: How far is too far for a parent to go in fighting a band director's or coach's decision?

"We've never had a parent so persistent," said Gary Reeves, a Garland ISD assistant superintendent for more than 20 years.

Brewster, an attorney, said she'd be willing to go as far as the Texas Supreme Court.

"I think Mr. Toney has issues because he cannot cope with having an African-American as squad leader, or doesn't like Austin," she said. "If you do not take a stand when someone is implementing racial hatred, and you do nothing, then you say it's OK. And it's not OK. I'm here trying to teach my children values."

Toney declined to comment for this story. But in an e-mail to the school district, he said the accusations are unjustified.

"I find the allegations of blatant racism to be most offensive and unfounded," Toney wrote. "In short, my opinion is that this grievance filing is unfair, defamatory and slanderous at the very least."

Brewster said seniors have been named drum leaders in recent years. Austin is a senior who lost to a white junior.

"The grade of the student is immaterial," Toney said in his e-mail. Squad leaders this year are ethnically diverse, he wrote. One is black.

Toney also wrote that while "Austin is a great kid and we love that he is in band," he has had problems with tardiness and behavior. He also stressed that the squad leader tryouts focused on marching fundamentals, and Austin did not stand still during attention.

When asked whether the chosen drum leader might be the most qualified, Brewster said an independent band camp judge rated Austin several skill levels higher than the designated drum leader three weeks after Austin was not picked for squad leader.

Brewster has become a fixture at Garland school board meetings, regularly commenting during the public forum and prompting executive sessions with her complaints. Because she is an attorney, Garland ISD has consulted with its attorney to deal with her issues.

Brewster also has carried a banner to school events that publicly identifies the student who became drum leader. The banner also invited people to ask her why he should not be drum leader.

The drum leader's family declined to comment.

Austin said he supports his mother's efforts, though he initially did not. The "race card" was a tough card to play, he said. But ultimately, he said, he could see no other reason that he didn't get the coveted position.

"Sometimes moms can be overbearing and over-supportive," Austin said. "But she explained the scenario to me. She didn't want me to look the other way."

Austin described himself as a "natural-born leader" who took the initiative of making sure all his fellow drummers went to band camp. "I even paid for one student to go," he said.

He and his mother had hoped to list "Drum Squad Leader" on his college applications. He's already been accepted at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

In his letter to the school district, Toney said he understands that a band student can feel hurt if he doesn't achieve a goal. But he added, "You just don't win every time."

He described Austin as smart, mature and even supportive of the younger student who beat him out for drum squad leader.

"Many things come easily to this talented young man and I truly believe that were it not for his mother, this issue would be over," he wrote.

Kilgore-Nacogdoches halftime ... most interesting!

Friday night I went to Kilgore to see KHS-Nacogdoches. While the Nacogdoches band was performing on the field, the KHS drill team marched up and stood in place on the sideline (literally on the line) between the 40 yard lines. The drill team officers were actually standing in place a yard or two on the football field.

Sure enough, the NHS band marched toward the sideline and was blocked from making its turns by the KHS drill team, which didn't budge an inch. Several of the NHS bandsmen were forced out of place, out of step, etc. It could have been a real trainwreck. Fortunately, the band recovered and was able to complete its drill. (It also was dangerous to the drill team. Those NHS tubas were big!)

Please understand, I'm not connected in any way with KHS or NHS. I'm from Longview and a Lobo fan.

My question is: Do bands/drill teams have policies about lining up while another band/drill team is performing? Frankly, it seemed very rude for the KHS drill team to line up ON THE FIELD at the 50-yard-line while the NHS band was performing.

I'm not blaming the drill team members; they lined up where they were told to. However, the drill team could have easily lined up a few yards outside the sideline and avoided any potential problems.

By the way, the drill team performance was great. The NHS band was tremendous, too.

I don't mean to open a can of worms here. I'm just curious if there are policies in place for bands/drill teams waiting to perform. I seems to me to be a matter of COURTESY and RESPECT.

Thank you, SFA, for hosting this year's 2008 NAMMB contest. Although I am a military band fanatic, I don't agree with so much that is posted. I understand that you don't prepare military drills, since you arn't a military band. (Gosh - sounds like common sense to me.) I respect you (SFA) for marching what you choose to march - which is CORE. I hope the voices of grateful band people out there drown out those few jerks who have no gratitude. Thanks, again SFA!

Military Marching Bands

Hi All -

I am a former Lufkin High Band member and really enjoyed this year's 2008 UIL contest. I was a little shocked by the performance of Nacogdoches. They were awsome. They reminded me of how Longview used to perform back in the 1980s, when they really popped their turns. (You have to be impressed with their silent count to-the-rears, too!) And the bands such as Center and Lindale and even Athens looked superb. But what about Arp? They were down-right robbed. That band deserved all first division ratings, especially for a small school. My other beef is for Robert E Lee. How on earth could any judge have given them a 2? Lee also deserved all division 1s. Hmm. . . I think the band that had improved the most (besides Nacog) was Henderson. Henderson has really matured into a great band. On another note, did anyone attend the NAMMB contest last weekend? You would never guess how well Cleveland (yes, the band from Cleveland, Texas) performed. They are a band to be reckoned with.

With all of the arguments about style and who should have won, etc.. I would just like to thank all students, directors, and staff who are dedicated to their programs and work countless hours working together to achieve success. East Texas has a great # of quality bands who should all feel proud of their accomplishments wether or not they are happy with their final outcome. In 20 years it will not matter how your band placed at a particular contest but what principles you learned about teamwork, accountability, dedication, and responsibility to others. Band is the one school activity that transcends all racial, socio-economic, gender, and intelligence barriers to provide students a learning environment that truly mirrors the real world. In today's ever increasing "me first" society I am proud of all involved that have put in the time, effort, and sweat to make East Texas Bands a worthwhile endeavor.

rebuilding bands

Ok, I've read several things about the Queen City band and the Union Grove band, as well as several others. Both are great bands with great teaching, YEARS of great teaching. The director at UG has been there around 18-20 years and the director at QC has been ther around 7 or 8. Definitely there is something to be said about longevity of a director directly relating to a bands success. What about bands that have had such a turnover of directors that nothing was ever consistent. I have in mind the Linden-Kildare Band. LK is a small 2AA between Atlanta and Jefferson on HWY 59. I am friends of several band parents there. They have a new guy that is going into a program that is SEVERELY down in the dumps (actually its his 2nd year there). From what I hear, the band still isnt too great, but the parents are extremely happy with the new guy. There is more discipline in the band then there has been, the junior high kids are getting much more attention than in the past, he shows up to work early, and actually shows up EVERY DAY! And he's the ONLY director for this 2A program (take a look at how many 2a bands have only 1 director nowadays...not many). I guess the point I'm making is that bands like QC and UG were in HORRIBLE shape before their current directors took over and simply stayed for a while to build it (this is not opinion, it's fact). Even Canton, yes Canton, made a 4 at marching contest the first year Rob Toups took over. And look at them now. My curiosity is this; what have ya'll out in the band world heard about the Linden-Kildare band? Do we get so caught up in who's the best that we dont ever look to see who's improving? Whos' bettered themselves? Who's teaching the kids to be the best they can be? What about Paul Pewitt? They've improved tremendously the past couple of years as well. I wish all directors out there good luck in building a better band. I guess I'm interested in LK because there is a buzz about them that I'm hearing (and my neice is in 5th grade there and cant wait to be in beginner band next year). Your thoughts?

Endangered species: military bands

So what can we do to encourage the extinction of military bands or at least go ahead and push them over the cliff? It sure seems like East Texas is behind the times and needs to catch up to the last millinneum. Hello, Sousa died in 1932. KL King died in 1971. Henry Fillmore died in 1956. --And the list goes on. I think it would stop all of the complaining, whining, and griping about which one (corps or military) is best. If people could get their heads out of the past and catch up, we could just move on from the same 120 bpm and same quick-step marches year after year. The counter-march is dead. Embrace the slide.

With the James Bowie / Maud rival game going on, it was a great opportunity for all to get out and vote for their favorite band, and JB came out on top by about 300 votes. Over 5000 votes were cast during the week, many thanks going out to those who voted on both sides to show their support of the bands. Not only do we rival on the field, but in the stands, too!

With UIL marching contests over for most last week, it was a great ending to a stressful week!

Go Pirate Band! The Pride of the Blue and Gold!

Who dropped the .....lunch?

I know we have a lot of band folks here with tons of knowledge. I would like an opinion on a situation I heard about recently.

Days before a contest a band director tells the band club officials he has lunch for the contest, tailgaite style. So the band marches and heads back to the busses before they are to watch some of the other bands. At the busses the band director says he was not suppose to get the food. The band club official says you said you had lunch. Well, the director's response was "I said pay for lunch, ya'll were suppose to bring it." So the band had no lunch.

Some people went and got them lunch, not sure who paid for it but they had to pay more than if plans would have been made ahead of time.

So, who dropped the ball?
