Texas High Wins District 13-4A

Texas High defeated Marshall 19-0 to win the 13-4A Team Tennis Title. This marks the school's 20th consecutive fall team tennis championship which began in 1990. Combined with their Combined Scores in the Spring Season, Texas High has won 40 consecutive district tennis titles under Coach John Watson.

Congrats to the Tiger and Coach Watson.

Adding more teams to team tennis post-season

I've heard that letters have gone out to superintendents and AD's about adding more tennis teams to the post-season. Any opinions supporting or against the idea?

I can see people supporting it, because more kids get to experience post-season play, and there are some teams in the DFW area that have 3-4 teams that are ranked in the top 25.

On the other hand, would having that many teams per district in the playoffs water down the accomplishment of making
it out of district?

If they take 3 teams to post-season play, I'm guessing that they would have to have an "area round" of dual matches between the 2nd and 3rd place teams before the regional tournament, so they can keep the regional tournament to 16 teams.

I think in the end, this will end up making the regional tournament tougher, because those ranked 3rd place teams that are in great districts will take the place of a weak 2nd place team from a weaker district.

Grant Adams a sophmore at Texas High won the 4A State Championship in Austin. He beat the runner-up from Region II whom he had beaten earlier.

Congrats to Grant on being the first state champion in approximately 15 years from Texarkana.

Texas High finished 6-0 in the 2008 Team Tennis season. This is the 19th consecutive district title for Texas High. During the 2008 campaign they won 111 individual matches without losing one set.

They play a rematch this Saturday versus Lindale in Texarkana (Oct 25th) before heading off to Regionals.

Texas High won it's own team tennis tourney over a group of solid teams. The tournament included 5 of the top 25 state ranked tennis tennis teams in 4A which included Wichita Falls #4, Waco Midway #10, Frisco #16, Texas High #19, and Lindale #23. Tyler Lee, Kilgore and Van rounded out the field. Texas High had wins over Kilgore, Frisco, Waco Midway and Wichita Fall in the finals.

Good luck to all qualifiers. It will be nice when the 2 AAAA Frisco schools have to compete with schools their own size. Its not their fault, I blame the UIL. They should be able fix it where schools with 1200-1400 kids aren't competing with schools that have 450-800 kids. AAA Girls singles will fun to watch at state Brittani, Nicole, and Brooke all going at it. Good luck with your draw Vollydoll. LOL Good job on qualifing 2 years in a row. Thats great. Have you heard anything from your Center buddies? I haven't seen all of the results from that region.

Just curious how much new courts should cost. Our school was given a quote of $250,000 for two courts. Claimed the type of soil (black clay) was the reason behind the cost. Does this sound right? I'm clueless about new construction costs. I don't think this included lights. Any help would be appreciated.

So what is everyone from 11-4A playing this Spring. From Sulphur Springs it is:

Boys Singles: Jordan Horne (got 2nd in District last year)
Girls Singles: Morgan McCormick (good player but doesnt try to hard)
Boys Doubles: Robert Stevens and Zack Adams (both sophomores that are very inconsistent but good players)
Mixed Doubles: Ali Jackson and Erich Hartin (they dont play that often but have gotten 3rd at Ennis and 1st at Greenville)

I would post the others but these people are the only ones that have a decent shot at going to regionals. So who's playing what at T-High and Lindale?

How do think your school came out? Thoughts about next Fall?

Kilgore loses 3 teams(Pine Tree, Hallsville, Marshall) from the old district, but none of the teams finished in the top 3. We picked up Lindale, so that is a tough opponent. The district will be competitive with Kilgore, Nac, Jacksonville, and Lindale all being in the same district. I think the biggest disappointment is that we stayed region 2. The only positive is that we don't have T-High in our district. I think Lindale, Kilgore, and Jacksonville will be the top 3 next Fall.

I remember when Kilgore used to dominate at tournaments. when I was in 8th grade and even a sophomore Kilgore had some hoss players. What heppened to Kilgore's awesome program. Center played Kilgore earlier this year and the boys side didn't have players the same caliber as they used to. After Sawyer and umm Jesse Dean i think and one few other boys used to put up some good wins. I think the top 2 or 3 were in supers at one time.

Kilgore my 8th grade year was #10 in 4A, before New Braunfels and Richardson Pierce. What happened?

Quality High School Tennis In Longview

I you would like to see some quality high school tennis. Four of the top 20 in the state in 4A Team Tennis will be meeting this weekend in Longview for matches. The teams include:

#9 Texas High
#13 Corsicana
#17 Lindale
#18 Frisco

Texas High will play Corsicana & Frisco as will Lindale. Texas High & Lindale will meet to determine the winner of 11-4A later. These matches are important for each of these teams rankings at the Region II tourney.

Historically Texas High has played at Longview High in the morning and Pine Tree courts in the afternoon. Go to either court and you will witness some of the best team tennis that will be played in East Texas this fall. For high school players in 12-4A it is a good opportunity to see teams you might face at regionals.

2x 2A girls singles state champ moves to 3A

Junior Brittini Fausett, who won state in girls singles in 2A as a freshman and sophomore at Winona High School has moved to Cameron Yoe High School, a 3A school in district 18 of region 3.

This will make the 3A girls singles draw even more interesting at state.

With the exception of the girls single's, all the other divisions should be pretty wide open since the champions graduated.

Whitehouse is looking pretty strong...only losing 5 matches total in 2 Team matches their top three boys seem almost unstoppable in singles...although they are having trouble finding how to bong in doubles they (two matches lost in doubles) they should have that figure out in no time!

There were some good matches in this event, but Kilgore lost 3 matches that went 3 sets after winning the first set. Lindale's girls were excellent and the boys were good at the top.

2007 Texas High Fall Campaign

Texas High begins in Fall Tennis season today in the Wichita Falls Rider tournament. The boys team appears to be strong but will definitely miss Andy Pullido. Daniel Moser has assumed the role of #1 boys. #2 position goes to Grant Adams, a freshman who is ranked #1 in Arkansas in the 14s. #3 position goes to Trey Brown who won district in the spring. That is good depth with the district champion playing #3. The remainder of the boys lineup appears to be solid tennis players.

The girls side of the team should improve due to their experience. Shannon Malaby is #1 with Hannah Smith and Jenna Markham. a freshman.

The team will get to compete this year on renovated courts and 3 new covered courts. While the court at Texas High have always been good, they have not been the most fan friendly. That aspect has been improved dramatically. Texas High hosts it fall tournament on Sept 7-8.

I think that the Whitehouse team has a great chance this year! The boys are looking very strong and with Corbin/Lapierrer most likely playing doubles and McKown/McKown together and Gilbreath/Recchia playing with each other the boys are looking very strong doubles wise! Singles wise they all have different games which all can create a diverse type of shot selection which should prove to keep all teams on their feet! The girls have shown much improvement from last year and should create a solid line up and win most of their matches! I am predicting a winning year for Whitehouse! Also, Corbin was awarded first team all district and McKown was awarded second team all district so the Whitehouse team has proven to have talent, and not to mention the Whitehouse Boys team was Co-District Champions with a very young team so they should prove to be very good!

After winning aganist the #1 team from Canyon in the third set(6-2) I don't know the first two set scores. They went on to play Laferia in the semifinals I don't know scores on that on either but they won in two sets and they are playing Vernon in the finals today

Well, Humphreys and Jarvis lost first round. I really thought they had a good chance as they both made it to state last year, and Jarvis got 3rd. But they had a tough draw. I watched the match, and it was a close one, lost 6-3 in the 3rd to a tough Mason team. And that ends an era at Grand Saline with Jarvis/Humprey/Gentry. Good luck to those 3 seniors. None of them are playing next year in college. It will be a tough time for GS for the next few years, as they rebuild.

Just curious...How does a regional seeding meeting work? and how are seeds decided?

Obviously someone is going to be seeded above those they have beat in the past. But what if a player hasn't played anyone else in the bracket?

Chayce Stone of White Oak broke his right wrist and after started playing tennis left handed. In the Wills Point Tourney still got second place to Goode of Van. He plays in the distict tourney starting tomorrow @ Gwater. You should come out and watch this amazing kid play.

Patriots Double-Dip Against Mississippi College

The University of Texas at Tyler defeated ASC East rival Mississippi College Friday afternoon, with the men winning 5-4 and the women taking the match 8-1.

�We're very happy with the win,� Patriots tennis coach Chris Bizot said. �We played exceptional doubles today, which was good. We haven't done that all year, so we're happy to get that good start. Anytime you win in the ASC East, it's a really good thing.�

Men�s: UT Tyler 5, Mississippi College 4

The Patriots men�s team took all three doubles matches, but struggled in singles, losing the top four singles matches. Bizot said that put his team�s back up against the wall, and they responded.

�Will McDonald and Tim Pedraza really stepped it up in singles,� Bizot said. �We were actually down 4-3, and those guys came through big time for us and secured the win.�

McDonald (JR/Houston, TX) won #5 singles 6-0, 7-6(3), and Pedraza (SO/League City, TX) won 6-2, 6-3.

Women�s: UT Tyler 8, Mississippi College 1

The women�s team won all three doubles matches, dominating the competition early.

�We had a great team effort,� Bizot said. �Last year, we won 5-4 and it was a really stressful match. It just goes to show you how far we've come in a year that we could beat a team like Mississippi College 8-1.�

Singles #1 player Beth Launius (SO/LaGrange, TX) won her match 6-2, 6-0, while #5 player Danielle Domingues (FR/Houston, TX) won 6-0, 6-1.

The Patriots are now 9-3 on the season for both teams, while Mississippi College suffers their first conference loss of the season.

Can anyone give me some valid reasons why T high has deamed it necessary to cover there tenis courts. As a tax payer in the t high district, I was wondering if my money was going towards this project? Couldn't the other new indoor facility be utilized? Seems like many programs have taken a real fall. There are some great programs, but they are few and far between. Many programs are struggling to fill varsity with good players. I have talked to quite a few of my high school coach friends, and they say that participation has dropped a lot in the last few years. Many schools like Lindale, Van, and 3A+ East Texas schools are having problems getting boys to play. And a lot of the top ranked state players dont even play for their schools. 1A and 2A programs like Grand Saline have fallen in the amount of talent they have and dedication from the players. Any opinions?

Texas High is hosting its annual season opening tournament on Friday and Saturday. The tournament historically hosts the best teams in East Texas was well as some top teams outside the area. Historically 4A powers Ennis and Corsicana have graced the tournament.

Jenks from the Tulsa area is normally attends also. They are to Oklahoma tennis that Highland Park is to Texas tennis.

Should be a great opportunity to witness some of the best high school tennis this season in East Texas. Forecast is a bit chilly but dry. Texas High has completed refinishing their courts (exccept for a three new "covered" courts which are under construction.

Texarkana Gazette reported on 10/22/06 that Texas High's Boys went 75-0 in singles matches this fall in team tennis. That is a pretty amazing record.

My 8 yr old son has taken an interest in Tennis so we have bought the rackets and balls and been to the courts many times to smack em back and forth... I have never played tennis until now, but always been athletic, so I can play "catch" if you will.
Looking for advice from those of you with experience:
I am wondering, should I just keep playing with him or should I go with finding him like a high school player "coach" who can actually help him learn the game? He has asked questions that I am not sure about....so maybe I could just go get a book about "Tennis for Dummies"????? Your opinions please.....
