Tenaha Cheerleaders

First of all, I was at the Tenaha Joquin game and I believe this wholes business about a stupid little sign is a bus load of bull. If I do remember correctly, last year the Joaquin Rams had a sign posted up about "We Eat Tiger Meat" and so forth. Emotions were high last Friday night, mainly because Joaquin and Tenaha are big rivals, always have been, always will. If it hadn't of been Joaquin's Homecoming, or if the Rams would have won, then the Joaquinians would have been all over Tenaha talking about how they might want to "recheck their mastercard". (Or something silly like that.)

For ANYONE, and I repeat ANYONE to mistake this harmless little sign for something more is childish. I've also heard that The superintendents of both school had the audacity to try and reprimand the Cheerleading Coach. If Joaquin adults can't take a little sign at a game as nothing more than what it is, (a little sign at a game), and if the announcer can't JUST do his job and not blare out useless childishness over a loudspeaker then I have a solution that is probably well on it's way. Tenaha SHOULDN'T play Joaquin anymore. It appears to me that everytime these two teams get together they argue. I didn't hear the announcer point out the numerous times Joaquin got penalized for their player's actions on the field.

Furthermore, I have friends on the THS Cheer Squad and I know that they didn't parade around in front of the football team with that sign and it was never meant to cause so much distress. If ONE sign is going to make the ENTIRE Joaquin football team upset, then they're not the football team that all of Joaquin thinks they are. All I know is that this whole thing has gotten blown out of proportion. No one would have said anything if Joaquin would have made a sign like that.

Personally, if we do play Joaquin again, I will be the Marooned & Whited out freak on the sideline hollering for my team, with my own little sign that reads, "Put your big RAM panties on and DEAL WITH IT!!!"

Rude cheerleaders

There's one in the band section, so I'll start one here. What is considered rude behavior in this area? I saw this last night I think. While the visiting teams school song was being played, the home cheerleaders were on the field standing still and awaiting to do their routine. When the home side school song started and they began their routine, the visitor cheerleaders started practicing a pyramid off to the side. They weren't on the field, but just out of the endzone. I thought it was rude that one group stood respectful for theirs, while the other couldn't return the favor. Am I wrong?

Qualifications for Head Cheerleader

With tryouts right around the corner, I just wanted to know what some of the schools qualifications were to be named the Head Cheerleader or Captain. At our school, we name co-captains on our JV and varsity squads. You must be a senior to be a varsity co-capt. and for JV it is usually a junior. If there are no juniors then it will be sophomores and so on.

Well, that meant this past year, we had a co-capt. on varsity that was an alternate on varsity the year before just because she was a senior. For the JV we had a co-capt. that had never been a cheerleader before just because she was one of only two sophomores on the squad.

Shouldn't scores, experience, leadership capabilities, grades, teacher recommendations, etc. have something to do with who gets these positions of leadership?

Just wondering what other schools did?

I must be getting old .... from the generation of the 60's ... that's been a long time ago.

I saw a picture in the Tyler Sunday sports page of three RE Lee cheerleaders comforting a Lee player after their loss to Plano East Saturday.

Maybe it's a paper "mark" on the picture, but I could swear that the cheerleader on the left is wearing an eyebrow ring.

I didn't think that cheerleader sponsors allowed those. Earrings .. yeah, probably naval rings ... but eyebrow rings?

Can't wait until lip and nose rings will be accepted as proper attire on the drill teams or cheerleading squads.

xxxxx scratch that last line .. that would definitely be over the line.

Like I said, perhaps it's a paper mark ... I certainly hope it is. Oh well, mark it down to me being old-fashioned, I guess.... but old-fashioned is not always being wrong.

Some of you high school cheerleaders / sponsors ..... what's allowed at your school?
(1) naval rings?
(2) tongue rings?
(3) eyebrow rings?
(4) uncovered tatoos on the ankles?
(5) uncovered tatoos on the arms?
(6) lip or nose rings? Might as well throw that one in.

I'd just like to know. Thanks for the responses.

House approves ban of risque cheerleading

05/04/2005

By APRIL CASTRO / Associated Press

Sideline booty-shakin' at Texas high school football games would be restricted to more ladylike performances from the cheering squad, under legislation approved Tuesday by the Texas House.

The bill would prohibit "overtly sexually suggestive" routines at school-sponsored events, giving the state education commissioner authority to request that school districts review performances.

"Girls can get out and do all of these overly sexually performances and we applaud them and that's not right," said Democratic Rep. Al Edwards of Houston, who filed the legislation.

Edwards argued that lascivious exhibitions are a distraction for high school students that result in pregnancies, high school dropouts, contraction of AIDS and herpes and "cutting off their youthful life at an early age."

Bawdy performances are not defined in the bill, which was approved on a 65-56 vote.

"Any adult that's been involved with sex in their lives, they know it when they see it," Edwards said.

In a state known for its reverence of Friday-night football, Edwards said he filed the legislation after seeing too many ribald routines by young girls in his district.

Opponents, including the American Civil Liberties Union, say the measure is unnecessary because state law already prohibits public lewdness by students on or near a school campus.

Critics also argue that the difference between suggestive dancing and artistic expression can be difficult to determine.

Several lawmakers periodically waved pompoms in debate that was alternately comical and fiery.

"How is this bill advancing the agenda of the people? Have we done anything about stem cell research to help people who are dying and are sick advance their health? No," said Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston. "Have we done anything about the mentally ill, school finance or ethics?

"This is a ridiculous bill ... I don't know how this bill got to the floor. It's stupid."

Members of the state's cheerleading community say cheering competitions already penalize for suggestive movements or vulgarity.

But, proponents say they like the measure because it gives parents support in addressing their teenagers' behavior.

"I think that to have suggestive performances is not good for the girls or the guys at a time in life when hormones are already very active," said Cathie Adams, president of the Texas Eagle Forum, a conservative watchdog group that favors the proposal.

"I think that there are plenty of ways to show artistic expression without movement that mimics sensual behavior."

Although cheerleaders must meet the same no-pass, no-play academic requirements of athletes, cheerleading is not a competition sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of Texas high school sports.

The UIL also does not have performance regulations for squads who cheer for their teams at state championships.

The measure still must be approved by the Senate and sent to the governor's desk before it can become law.

___

The bill is HB1476

Cheerleaders - athletes or pom-pom wavers

At the top of the pyramid - 1st stop -- GONZAGA
By Mary Buckheit

I come from this school of thought: If you can ring a doorbell, you can be a cheerleader.

But then again, I'm a jock. You won't find my picture next to the 'best legs' category in the yearbook. But if you flip to the back, there I am, winner of the 'most likely to have scraped knees' superlative. I'm more Sue Bird than Jessica Simpson ... more Sporty Spice than Slinky Sandy. I'm an athlete, not a cheerleader.

Naturally, then, when talk in a recent meeting here at "The Worldwide Leader" turned to the Cheerleader Challenge, I was skeptical -- bang-my-head-on-the-desk skeptical. We're not Maxim; we're a sports site -- and cheerleading is certainly not a sport. I mean, God bless it, but c'mon: They're nothing more than busty bi-products of on-field competition.

Brimming with the arrogance all jocks conveniently store in the chip on their shoulder, I threw on my flip-flops, packed up my pool attire and headed west ... to cover cheerleading. Oh well, at least I'd come back with a tan.

I never dreamed that I'd also return with a suitcase full of appreciation for cheer squads everywhere.

"I don't really think of cheerleaders as athletes, but I think they do a good job. They're always practicing and getting to the arena two hours before our games. I don't know what they do for so long. Practice, I guess," said sophomore forward Monica Uhrig.

Yes, practice. And let me tell you something, these sessions are no cakewalk. Picture this. As the female partner stands stiff as a board, clenching every muscle in her body, her male partner stands behind her holding her hips. On the count of "two," the tandem squat simultaneously and in one swift motion, the girl miraculously ends up standing on the guy's shoulders.

This little ditty is the most basic you'll find in a cheerleader's bag of tricks; they do ten of these just to warm-up ... but it was the only stunt I had mastered by the last night of my field trip.

Landing on a set of sturdy shoulders is child's play, I'd have to step it up if I wanted to make the squad. They up the ante with a "chair," when the guy flicks the girl up and catches her butt on the palm of a hand now extended above his head. Do it right and she lands as if nothing just happened, looking as if she is relaxing on a comfy love seat. Got that? I didn't. But they kept going without me.

This sure looks pretty athletic to us.
Next up, the toss-to-hands. It's a cheerleader's equivalent to the layup, but a stunt that amazed me every time. The guy launches the girl up to his shoulder level and with his elbows bent, catches her heels in his hands. Then both can then straighten their arms up all the way above their heads if they want to show off.

Are you picking up what I'm putting down? These cheer bunnies are for real.

I guarantee the guys could squat, clean and military press you under the table. The ladies? Well, the ones I met were all sheets of muscle. Their triceps and abs are forces to be reckoned with and their willingness to stay fit of their own free will is unwavering. Freshman Jessica Hertz walked by as I sat in the lobby one afternoon. Asked what she was up to, Hertz replied, "We're gonna go run again." For those keeping score at home, this was their second trip of the day to the fitness center, and this jog was sandwiched between the day's two scheduled practices. Double sessions. Who knew?

Now, if it's starting to sound like I'm endorsing their candidacy for acceptance as athletes ... trust me, it isn't easy to type. I must be getting soft.

But gush, I must. These girls are dedicated to keeping their very visible bods in top shape. They are flexible and strong, with an incredible sense of balance. You can take the most athletic girl you know, dress her up in a little skirt and halter top and stick her out there, but there's just no way she is going to be able to do the stuff that cheerleaders can. Just as there's no way a cheerleader could stroll onto a field hockey, basketball or softball team and blend in with the starters.

So what is it that keeps us from taking cheerleaders as seriously as we should?

Call it semantics, but I say, first, get rid of that "squad" nonsense. Cheerleaders are disciplined, strong and coordinated. They function with the fluidity, respect and cohesion of a team. They have a coach who they depend on, leaders who they look up to and a goal that they work towards. They train hard and focus fast. They hone their craft to accomplish things that most of their peers can't -- not even the "Most Athletic" stud in your yearbook.

I learned so much from those zippy Zags. On the flight home, I dissected my change-of-cheer heart while I desperately tried to shake that dare, "Go! Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A!" chant out of my head.

It reminds me of a catchy softball shout from back in my pixie league days.

"We don't wear no miniskirt.
We wear our jersey shirt.
And we don't sip no lemonade.
We drink that Gatorade.
And we don't dance with Barbie dolls.
We play with bats and balls."

It didn't strike me until then -- but we athletes sure seem a lot like cheerleaders.
................................................................................
.........................................
Could YOU make the cut??
Here are the bare minimum tryout requirements of the Gonzaga Cheer Squad. Think you could hack it?
For the Fellas:

2-mile run
20 bar dips
24" vertical
Bench 100% body weight 10x
Proper spotting technique. Stunting ability including partner flicks, chairs and toss-to-hands.
For the Ladies:

2-mile run
10 bar dips
19" vertical
Bench 75% body weight 10x
The day of the tryout, girls will be taught a moderate degree of difficultly dance routine which they will have one hour to learn and then perform in front of the judges in small groups.

And it didn't strike me until now, but those cheerleaders sure seem a lot like athletes
