RUSK, Texas—Liberty-Eylau’s boys powerlifting team defending the Region III, Division II team championship Saturday by scoring 29 points and sending six of its eight regional qualifiers to the state meet.
In all, eleven area lifters qualified for the state meet, held March 26-27 in Abilene, Texas.
Josh Webster won the 242-pound division with a 1,520 total. The top two finishers in each event and others who reach a specific qualifying weight for their class qualify for state.
Cantrell McKinley set a school record with his 575-pound deadlift and was also named the best deadlifter in the heavy platform. McKinley finished second in the 198 class with a 1,340 total.
Jarvis Lollis was runner-up in the 220s with a 1,450 total, Terran Cooper lifted 1,300 in the 165s for second place, and Thomas Howard was second in the 123s with a 935 total.
Roy Butler joined Webster, Lollis, McKinley, Cooper and Howard as state qualifiers by hoisting 1,200 pounds in the 148 class to finish fourth. Deshun Brewer was sixth in teh same division with a 960 total, and Holis Webster finished eighth in the 181s with an 1,195 total despite not completing the final event due to an injury.
