Southern Baptists consider dropping 'Southern' from name

Published February 20, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The nation's largest protestant denomination will remain "Baptist" but it's thinking about whether to stay "Southern" for much longer.

Southern Baptist Convention President Bryant Wright is expected to present the recommendation of a task force studying whether the denomination should change its name.

No potential new names have been made public, but they could be revealed Monday night in an executive committee meeting. No change would be official until it is approved by members at the next two annual conventions.

Wright has said he is concerned the name is too regional and hinders efforts to plant new churches outside of the South.

Others outside of church leadership say the name has become a liability because it is too often associated with divisively partisan politics.

name it what you want.. where in the bible does it give authority or example of a convention or denominational leadership/government body that presides over local churches. The only scriptual group i know of even remotely similar to this was the apostles and they've all been dead almost 2000 years.

What the SBC says is not binding for any SBC church.

if they are an "SBC church" doesn't that mean they follow the SBC? they've got a website with position statements, mission and vision, and all at sbc.net here is the purpose in their mission statement:
PURPOSE

eliciting, combining, and directing the energies of the Baptist denomination of Christians,
for the propagation of the gospel, any law, usage, or custom to the contrary notwithstanding.

- Charter of the Southern Baptist Convention,
December 27, 1845
