GAME PREVIEW & SERIES REVIEW

Escape. For one half, Longview saw themselves in a dog fight with Tyler Lee. The Lobos, behind a 74 yard kickoff return, escaped the first half with a 35-28 lead. In the second half, Longview dominated in route to a 56-28 lead early in the 4th quarter and a 56-35 lead overall. The win, Longview’s 12th straight over the Red Raiders, improves them to 2-0 in 11-6A play. The 2-0 mark also gives them a perfect record in district play after 2 games for the 12th time in 13 seasons under John King. Now, the Lobos come home to Lobo Stadium looking to expand on their 35-game home district winning streak against a team who desperately is looking for a win. Despite last week’s Yellowjacket upset of John Tyler (59-58), Rockwall saw their four year district winning streak come to an end at the hands of their cross town rival Rockwall Heath. The Hawks upset the Jackets, 34-27, in a see-saw affair that saw Rockwall never lead. The Hawks won the contest despite never throwing a single pass. The loss drops the Jackets to 1-1 in district play (1-4 on the season). While their playoff hopes are no where near finished, the Jackets definitely don’t want to see a second district loss for the first time since 2013. Prior to Friday’s contest, Rockwall had not lost a district game since Longview defeated them in Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium back in 2013 in the regular season finale. The two schools meet for the 7th time in their histories, the first dating all the way back to 1931. The two schools met first in the 1931 Class B bi-district round at Jacket Field where Rockwall walked away with a 20-6 win. Since then, Longview has grabbed 5 consecutive victories, four of which have been district games. The two schools were scheduled to be in the same district back in 2002/2003 before the Yellowjackets (along with DeSoto) petitioned the UIL and it was ultimately changed. Both schools will be looking for a big win heading into the bye week that all 11-6A teams will be observing on October 7th.

ON THIS DATE IN LOBO HISTORY: September 30th

In 1932, Longview won their second straight over the Bulldogs of Kilgore in a 6-0 win.

In 1938, Longview saw their 16-game winning streak come to an end at Lobo Stadium as Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson and the Lobos drew 13-13.

In 1955, the Lobos saw their 3-game winning streak come to a screeching halt in a 14-0 loss to Palestine in Longview.

In 1960, Spring Branch toasted the visiting Lobos, 21-0, inside Reggie Grob Stadium.

In 1966, Cecil Newton’s two touchdown catches were not enough to put the Lobos past Woodrow Wilson in a 19-14 defeat at Lobo Stadium.

In 1977, Dinky Edwards was the only touchdown in a 6-0 win for Longview over Nacogdoches. The Lobos, despite out gaining the Dragons 311 to 86, couldn’t punch anything in despite the Edwards tally.

In 1983, Steve Blaschke kicked a 27-yard field goal with just 10 seconds left on the clock in a 17-14 Lobo win over Texarkana at Grim Park.

In 1988, Shawn Lawson tallied the first score before Earnest Hunter added two more in a 49-0 victory over Texas High. Longview tallied 30 first downs in the contest to Texas High’s 7.

In 1994, Longview went toe to toe with Louisiana’s #1 Ruston Bearcats at James Field. Chris Cox tied the game in the 2nd quarter for the Lobos before Kevin Miles scored to pull within one late in the 4th. Longview elected to go for two, but the snap was bobbled and Ruston held on for the 14-13 victory.

In 2005, Vondrell McGee rushed for 4 touchdowns and 244 yards on the night as the Lobos rolled all over Mesquite Horn. Longview rolled up 465 rushing yards on the night.

Everything updated.

Kept having issues with the poll and it deleting itself. Finally fixed.

You're doing the Lord's work, hoss. :) The Lobo fanbase is fortunate to have fellers like you keeping track of stats and offering this kind of analysis. Well done.

salute out to 07!

Totally... and LoboFan97 and plenty of others. There's guys running multiple Lobo sports websites and social media pages. All voluntarily. It's a tremendous resource. I've never been a part of a district where so many people offered so much of their time and talents to support their program. It's really amazing to see. Lobo fans are some bighearted folks.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Rockwall is in an almost win situation, just as Lee was, just as North Mesquite will be in two weeks.

Jump on em early and never give em a chance. Hopefully our defense from the 1st half against Horn will show up for this one. Come to play on time.

I been singing praises for 07 work for past 3 years. I know 97 is big on the college board. Mav is pretty good also. Greenville and them freaking helmets he makes just off chain! Great work all around guys!

They're supposed to be pretty strong on offense, right? Hopefully we're stronger, and our defense does enough to win as tehy did vs Lee.

from wat JT folks say their WR makes them go. Wasn't that the game but sounded like Lee didn't respect Lobo safeties at all

Heath didn't throw it once against us either. They run the wing T, that no one sees anymore, and is power right and power left, with a few wrinkles in it when you pull up to it. I think they have thrown it 7 times all season. Their all in on the run.

or Byrd. At least I guess they run that same system this year, I haven't watched them. I know they didn't pass it that much against y'all...if at all.

its a little different than Byrd's or Curtis... Its almost like they don't have a true qB, You never know who is getting the ball.
