In 1994, the Rangers Kenny Rogers hurls a perfect game versus the Angels, 4-0. He is the first left-hander in AL history to toss a perfecto.
In 1991, Dennis Martinez of the Expos tosses a perfect game versus the Dodgers, 2-0. Catcher Ron Hassey becomes the 1st catcher to be behind the plate for two perfectos. He was behind the plate also in 1981, when Len Barker blew away Toronto, with 27 up and 27 down. In 1958, for the sixth time of his career, Mickey Mantle homers from both sides of the plate in the same game versus the Athletics. Mantle homered from both sides of the plate in the same game a ML record 10 times during his career !! Whitey Ford pitched the Yanks to a 8-0 win this day. -------------------- "The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, it part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that is good, and all that could be again. Oh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come."............Terence Mann

Another perfect game on this date:
JULY 28, 2005 In front of 6,569 fans at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas, three Frisco RoughRiders pitchers combined to pitch a perfect game against the Corpus Christi Hooks. A.J. Murray, Steve Karsay and Scott Feldman all "pitched in" to retire all 27 Hooks batters. Frisco won the Texas League contest, 3-0 .......... BOX SCORE |

I was at Rogers' perfect game with my wife and son. Kind of interesting. The game started, and after a few innings I'm thinking, "Rogers is pitching great tonight" without much of a thought about him being perfect. When it was over, the Ballpark went wild.
As a footnote, Rogers has Rusty Greer to thank for that perfect game. While there is no doubt Rogers did most of the work, Greer saved the game with at least one of his patented running, diving catches. |

After he finished the 7th, I told my boys to look at the scoreboard to see if they noticed anything unusual, but to not say anything. You don't talk about the No-No during the game. It was cool to see the look on their face as they understood the significance of the moment. They yelled like crazy when Greer made the catch. Unfortunately, my friend and his wife who were sitting two sections away, decided to beat the crowd out of the parking lot and didn't realize what he was missing until he listened to the 9th. Arrggh. Thanks Shoe for reminding me of that.

Is this record being challenged by any of today's swtich hitters? Wonder if this is a record that is high up the list of "hard to break" records? -------------------- |

It's a shame that the Rangers couldn't have kept Kenny. But he's got an attitude that grates on you....... or at least on the press.

Is this record being challenged by any of today's swtich hitters? Wonder if this is a record that is high up the list of "hard to break" records? Depends on who is giving you the list I would say. Mantle and Chili Davis and most recently Nick Swisher have homered from both sides of the plate 10 times during their career. -------------------- "The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. I Peter 3: 21...."21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ," |

JULY 28, 1994
At historic Mike Carter Field, the Tyler WildCatters rally from three different deficits to take a dramatic 8-7 victory over the San Antonio Tejanos. With the score tied, 7-7, in the bottom of the 9th, 'Catters catcher Derek Dana completes a 5-for-5 evening by singling into the right centerfield gap off Tejanos losing pitcher Troy Mooney, driving in outfielder Pat Woodruff with the winning run. Following the game, Tyler trades utility infielder Matt Torres to San Antonio for the pitcher they just defeated -- Troy Mooney. JULY 28, 1995 Behind 7 2/3 strong innings from lefthanded starting pitcher Kerry Knox, the Tyler WildCatters defeat the Rio Grande Valley White Wings, 4-2, before 1,375 fans at historic Mike Carter Field. JULY 28, 1996 The Tyler WildCatters fall behind three times to the Alexandria Aces before rallying for three runs in the top of the 9th, en route to a 7-4 victory before 1,028 fans at Bringhurst Field. 'Catters leadoff hitter Sean Collins scores the go-ahead run in the 9th -- reaching base on a walk & eventually scoring on Ken Shamburg's infield single. Tyler closer Ron Kitchen picks up the win -- his first victory of the 1996 Texas-Louisiana League campaign. JULY 28, 2001 The Tyler Roughnecks complete a three-game series sweep of the Montgomery Wings, winning, 7-1, before 2,897 fans at historic Paterson Field. Tyler starter Tommy John III pitches eight strong innings for his 5th victory of the season. The game is delayed for approximately 40 minutes in the top of the 9th as police and fire personnel attempt to rescue a juvenile who climbed to the top of the scoreboard in left field. BOX SCORE |
