Full Version: Why you should ALWAYS watch the final day of the MLB regular season

As a Baseball historian, I am certain that far more exciting, dramatic, memorable and historic things happen on the last day of the Baseball season than on any other day of the schedule. Pennants are decided, batting championships are won and lost, twentieth games are won, records are set, no-hitters are pitched, controversies arise & Hall Of Famers and near-Hall Of Famers play their last games without anyone realizing it at the time. If your team is at home, I urge you to make an effort to attend the last game of the season.

Baseball is a wonderful game, but Football trumps baseball when it comes to action. We've had this debate many times. There is not a sport in the world that is better than the NFL. Football is faster, tougher, and the closest thing that you can come to watching a real battle in action. Baseball is checkers, Football is Chess.

I would agree that football trumps baseball in terms of action...but I would say college football easily is better to watch than the NFL

Not sure where Bill James referenced football (NFL or college), so I won't comment on either.

I agree with him wholeheartedly, we should enjoy baseball on this last day of the season because April is far away. I will savor the playoffs, as I do every year.

DaveTV1, old buddy, you are wrong TWICE whome.gif

  • Baseball trumps football in everything except TV ratings (who cares?) getlost.gif

  • football is FAR from the fastest, toughest "chess-like" sport -- that distinction belongs to the World's second-greatest sport ... you know the one of which I am referring biggrin.gif ..........the sport whose very mention brings a collective rolling of the eyes to every SDC member except LoboFan07, Boss302, Colmesneilfan1, WRraider2010, CalallenWildcat, HvilleCat23, Rockon1885, tigerfan1165. Polar_Bear, MPRF07, base_baller, Raider_fan & your's truly (sorry if I missed anyone!).

'sorry to get off-topic . . . had to defend my two favorite sports.

This is where we should quote James Earl Jones as Terrance Mann from "Field of Dreams," but I'll leave that, maybe, to Cheapy. It would be quite appropriate here. Baseball is the essence of the American soul, linking generations together unlike anything else. It is a constant reminder of the green summer fields of our childhood, recalling the happiest memories of our collective past. It speaks to everything that is good in this country, and could be, again. (Thanks, Terrance).

Baseball feeds the soul

football feeds the short attention span whome.gif

We could talk about the different aspects of Football vs. Baseball, all over again. Not that I mind that, I love both, but everyday is a great day to watch both. Records are broke in both sports. It's the smell of leather, grass, and dirt that I love.

I do like Bill James, and I consider him an expert, but when the grass is dead it's time to put on a helmet. Football, not Hockey.

^ I knew what you meant ... seeing how Hockey players call them "buckets" whome.gif
