I was raised on Country Music, Elvis, Benny Goodman, Lawrence Welk, Dean Martin, and other 40's-50's bands. I liked some of it, but not all of it. When I was a young boy, and I heard my brothers music, The Beatles blew me away. I started listening to my brothers music. You have to realize that my brothers were born in 1949, 1952, 1957, 1961, and then I came along in 1968. My oldest brother was in Vietnam in 1969, but he left his music collection behind. Each of my brothers had their own tastes in music, and I loved most of theirs.
In succession:
1. The Beatles - I started out with Meet the Beatles and listened to every album intently. I was blown away with :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE75h1pe7Js Yes, I realize it was a Chuck Berry tune.
2. In 1975, my second oldest brother took me to see "Tommy" at the Jerry Lewis Theater on Spur 63. I was blown away by the music :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZRNPxkfLYs3. Then it was KISS, but that was because of the Saturday Morning ABC Special that was shown on Friday night. I liked H.R. Puffnstuff, and I was a kid. This was in 1976, and I was 7, but this blew me away :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgsoJrzplUI4. My brothers were growing older, and I was still a runt, but I liked "The Doobie Brothers" on "What's Happening" :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3Lb7Y4_zYk Rerun got busted with the tape recorder.
5. E.L.O. - My middle brother blew me away with their music
6. Van Halen - My closest sibling bought Van Halen and Van Halen II, and well I was hooked on Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen with his guitar, David Lee Roth with his screeching vocals, Michael Anthony with his bass, and Alex Van Halen pounding away blew me away.
7. Boston blew me away with their music.
8. I didn't know much about Queen, but my second oldest brother took me to see :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNIVpMXHqlk I was hooked on Queen.
9. Then I hear the magic of Def Leppard :

Growing up with no cable TV (i.e. no videos/MTV) we were restricted to local radio play, which usually consisted of top 40. But just like Dave said earlier, the older brother connection helped out. My buddy had and older "hippie type" brother. When he wasnt around we would listen to his album collection. My earliest memory of his stuff was "Hey Joe" by Hendrix.

The esoteric tunes spun by R&R on KWRW in Rusk, TX in the 1970s/1980s "blew my mind"
'twas introduced to Budgie, Trapeze, Hawkwind, Piper, Lone Star, Atomic Rooster and Uriah Heep.
The most recent band to "blow my mind" was/is The Wildhearts ... I never thought I would hear musicians who understood the virtues of good ol' fashion songwriting and CARING about their craft ever again...

I was blown away pretty much by all the great classic album rock that was played on the mighty KZEW 98 FM out of Dallas / Ft. Worth during the mid 70s through 1982 or so. I miss the ZOO as much as I miss the way MTV was the first 2 years it was on the air.
Sitting here thinking and remembering about listening to the ZOO after midnight with my friends sure brings back a lot of good memories. Memories last forever and the music lives on!

http://thezoofile.com/I remember in the early 80's listening to KZEW with friends before we went to school. In Longview the only time to pick it up was in the morning before 8:00 am. Once the station started fuzzing out, you knew it was time to head to school.
I think everyone that is a rock fan misses KZEW. KDBN tried but failed after the loss of Spicoli, Jeff K, and Jennifer Reed.

I see music as music. Yes, many ideas can be exchanged by music. I listen to a lot of different music, and Velvet Revolver was the last band to blow me away. They don't exist anymore. I sort of like Mumford and Sons and Kings of Leon, but there's something missing with those bands. Maybe that's why Bob Dylan let some many bands perform his music. I think Bob knew that he wasn't a great singer, but he was a great song writer. He also knew that by allowing his songs to be covered, he would be paid the royalties.
There is nothing about Rap or Hip Hop that has blown me away. Rap is as viable as "Weird" Al Yankovic, it's a parody of music and not to be taken seriously. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" Charles Caleb Colton, while others consider it to be an insult.
I'll freely admit that I like Van Halen, and they covered many songs. Many bands do in their beginning, to give the masses something that they are comfortable with, something they are familiar with. It gets their foot in the door, but perhaps that's why many bands don't last for years.

I'll tell you when my mind was blown, my friends. 34 years ago, my mind still a blank canvas and my heart as pure as the driven snow, on a clear, cool November morning I tuned my AM radio to Tyler's 1000 watt powerhouse, KDOK. The sound wafting from the speakers was like the nectar of the gods. I pulled off to the shoulder and began to weep softly with joy. For I had experienced the greatest music ever recorded.......Love Will Keep Us Together by The Captain and Tennille.
Every note of music written or recorded before or since pales in comparison to their supreme musical genius.

That is the reason that I when I heard Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, etc. that I became a follower of their music. It can all be traced to the birth of rap. May your ear drums bleed when you hear the above rubbish.

being as young as i am...i grew up with my mother carrying me to daycare and school each morning...she always had on either country or 80's pop.
To this day i remember in the 3rd grade my dad taking me to baseball practice and put in his tape deck (that makes me feel a little older) Revolver. I heard "Got to get you into my life" by the beatles. It definately blew my mind.
However, my best friend listens to rap and i still remember him convincing me to buy the marshall mathers lp...one of the most controvercial albums ever made, and rightfully so. i had a 6' bball goal set up in my room and we played basketball and listened to eminem for hours upon hours every weekend. and to this day, i honestly believe with all of my knowledge of music that eminem is one of the most genius writers in music history. certainly not THE greatest....that spot belongs to Lennon/McCartney
