I agree about popularity. The part about "jocks" I don't know. I can tell you If high school athlete can't run a five minute mile or play hard for 1 hr any sport without showing complete exhaustion, I don't consider them much of an athlete or jock. Even in football if you can't hustle 4 quarters get in the stands. To me a Jock is someone who can compete in an athletic event which usually includes running ,swimming, riding, hard for an extended period of time. Look at your best profesional soccer players, the true hustlers ( Landon Donovan, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Christiano Ranaldo, etc...) these are the ones that could actually carry over into a sport like XC....period
To me these are the "JOCKS" anybody else is just a wanabe jock

I have coached XC and have run races from 400 meters to 100 miles, so I can understand your frustration with the lack of respect for the sport, but you can't say that all jocks are not in shape or mentally weak.

I definitely agree with you there. Let's not forget that it was a soccer player from Brazil who won the 1984 Olympic gold medal in the 800 meters...Joquim (sp) Cruz. I sould be ashamed of myself for not remembering how to spell his first name.

that's like saying the only reason kids run cross country is so they'll actually have a sport to participate in. not gonna get much positive talk about the sport with posts like that.

I myself have made the transition from cross country last year to football this year and it takes two very different kinds of athletes to do good in each sport. i was an average runner running for Redwater now im playing football. Both cross country runners and football players are jocks and its not about the popularity anyways its about being the best you can be. If people dont respect your sport dont disrespect theirs, just do your own thing. thumbsup.gif
