Full Version: Stupid calls

Has anyone noticed how much the refs are screwing up with the " can't lead with the helmet " call this year. They have called it twice on the Cowboys (once against the Broncos and Chiefs) and i've seen it 3 or 4 times while watching other games this year. It seems that every time they call it, it's always a shoulder to chest hit, which also makes me believe NFL should have booth reviews on penalties.

I don't think they should be able to challenge all penalties. I do think a coach should be able to challenge a personal foul and pass interference.

Sorry thats what I meant. I don't think all penalties should be reviewed, because that would lead to more excuses when a team loses.

I was livid last week when Dallas was called for the one on 3rd and long late in the game...until Aikman explained the rule. He said that even if you lead with the shoulder and make contact with the helmet, which the Dallas player did, its gonna get called. I understand why the NFL has instituted this rule, but I think it could use some tweaking. Maybe a booth review to determine rather the contact to the helmet was intentional or not would help.

Which would lead to more advertising time and more money for Jerry.

He hit him with his shoulder, not his helmet.

Just like a lot of other rules, it all depends on how they are enforced. It stands to reason that a guy in the air for a catch and coming down while being tackled, more often than not, have his helmet contact either the shoulder pads of the defender tackling him or the ground. MOST of the head injuries suffered by receivers were from hitting the ground, not helmet to helmet contact.

Next thing you know, they won't let anyone tackle a receiver who is in the air until his feet hit the ground. I know, maybe they should just ditch the pads and just play flag football instead.
