UT's DJ Monroe was arrested last night for DWI. I guess he was celebrating the big win over BU. Now, this is just stupid for a player for UT to get arrested for anything while we're on the stretch run to the Big 12 title game at Jerry World. It's completely ignorant to do it, but I also realize he's a kid and a human who makes mistakes and will continue to make mistakes, but can learn from them.
I say suspend him for a couple of games, but don't kick him off the team like some people on the ESPN boards were saying a few minutes ago. Heck, every time you go out to eat and have 3 beers you are technically driving while intoxicated. One of my good friends has gotten a DWI and it costs a bunch of money.
Hopefully he'll learn from this.

Those 11 am CST kick offs...too much time on their hands after the game. I listened to a Kirkendoll interview last week and talked about how much he likes the early games. Gives them time to mess around that night.

I doubt he see's much of the field for the rest of this year. Mack frowns on stuff like this real bad. Stupid decision on DJ's part for sure. Hopefully he can learn his lesson and not have something like this happen again.
I figure he'll be sat down for the rest of the year for sure, maybe longer.

Seems like college athletes these days are constantly able to bail themselves out of jail with no problem...who foots the bill and is it a violation for a booster to bail them out?

I say let the kid play and let the courts handle this because upon further review, he may have been texting.

aaaahhh yes the Sergio Kindle approach. Too bad this young man didn't learn from the Kindle situation.

what a sad thing to say. the kid got a dwi. obviously, he was intoxicated to warrant it. now, driving while intoxicated is serious. more serious than people make it out to be. he's lucky he didn't kill anyone.

It happens everyday and night at every school in country, he was just caught this time, hopefully he learned his lesson, this is just getting old, thinking more about hisself than the team.

Bad choice by the young man. I am sure this is against "team rules" and will be appropriately handled. DWI on I-35 in Austin, Texas is a scary thought.
I do not have a "death penalty" mentality for these kinds of infractions, but you have to enforce a meaningful penalty to send a message to the rest of the team.
Hopefully he was scared straight.

What is most upsetting to me is the fact that coaches all over the states from high school to college to NFL tell their players to "be smart" when they have a little free time. Don't do anything to jeapordize yourself or the team; especially when things are going well. DJ is fortunate that all he got was arrested. Many lives and careers have been lost and families torn apart because of DWIs. I trust Mack will make a good decision.

Mack has handled this well; provided a statement Sunday night. There is significant difference in the stories of the trooper and DJ (Duh!). However, DJ will not play until the action is settled in the legal system. He is off the depth chart and will practice with the Scout team.
DJ has been replaced by Shipley as the Kick Returner (Shipley went to the coaches after the team meeting and volunteered to return KOs).

Actually, he's under 21 so the smallest sip of beer before driving could have landed him in jail. What the DWI charge tells me is that he hadn't "just been drinking." It says the officer believed he was actually intoxicated. Not good, but at least he's still alive to learn from it.

Yes. Because texting gives you the odor of alcohol on the breath, slurred speech, and blood shot and watery eyes.
That's why people get DWIs, not swerving with cell phones.

Punish him. Severely. He needs to understand the very real consequences of drinking and driving, its not a game, lives are put at stake when you get behind the wheel of a car after you've been drinking.
I am not anti-alcohol consumption. Its his body and he can do what he wants with it, but don't endanger the lives of others.
Sorry if I sound like I am intolerant of the situation. But my entire family was almost killed this past January by a drunk driver, and when its your family that is affected by it then you become much more intolerant of this kind of behavior.

The drunk hardly ever dies in an accident. Hardly ever wind up with injuries even. Maybe a headache, a bruise or two. But for the most part they walk away because they don't tense up (which increases bruising and swelling) on impact.

I could get into statistics and all that, but what you say is not really true. Drunks are killed at the same rate as the people they hit. We talked about that exact thing when I went to Intoxilyzer school. I said the same thing as you said about the drunks being more relaxed on impact. The numbers don't lie though. What WAS shown however, was that the drunks don't APPEAR to be AS injured the night of the accident, but the next day they are just as injured and sore as their victims.
