According to the Dallas Morning News, the AD was "mistaken" when he said the enrollment was 1926. Administration officials turned in an enrollment of 1921, keeping them in 4A.
Yea riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!!!!!
I don't buy it. The administrator says 1,926, finds out that 1925 is the cutoff, "oh wait a minute!" And then it comes out to 4 people less than the cut. They want to stay 4A because they know if they move up to 5A they would get hammered!!!

Question - If the cutoff is 1925 why are there some 5A schools that have less enrollment according to this website?
http://www.uil.utexas.edu/2005align/index.html
Example: Dallas Carter - 1896; Houston Strake Jesuit 1672; Fort Bend Willowridge 1735??

Private schools joining the UIL have to play in the highest classification.
Dallas Carter and FB Willowridge chose to play up a classification.

I think they could probably beat about 98% of the 5A teams in the state based on what I saw the other night!

Teams can opt up a class if they want to.

That's not a true statement - I know one person from Highland Park who is truly not a snob...of course she's related to me....

One clarification on schools opting to play up in classifications. The UIL changed the rule 2 years ago and states that a school can request to play in a higher classification only if it is part of a school district with at least 8 high schools. That pretty much leaves the option to the large metropolatin schools.

The rules for teams playing up in a higher classification changed a few years ago.
Back in the day...... a team could "play up" for any reason if their enrollment was borderline to the class they were wanting to play in.
Teams could play up to keep rivalries alive, traditions, etc.
BUT..... 5A got crowded (and still is). Space was getting tight, so in 2002 UIL said that schools could no longer "play up" unless they fell under a certain criteria.
Dallas Carter hasn't had a 5A enrollment for well over a decade. Before 2002, they could have played up for ANY reason. Mostly it was because their biggest rivals were in 5A (Skyline and other DISD). Not to mention....they were competitive in 5A.
But..... after 2002, schools couldn't just play up for any reason anymore.
Now....to play up, you have to be in a MUTLIPLE HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT. DISD had to show there would be a hardship by them going to 4A. DISD already has a FULL 4A district. There wasn't any room for them in 4A. PLUS.... there is already an entire DISD district in 5A. It isn't overcrowded.....so Carter stays.
Had it been say.....Desoto HS (one HS town) they would have been forced to go 4A if they had Carter's enrollment.
Another reason is travel. Say.... Abilene Cooper drops to 4A. But say there isn't a 4A district in their area. They would have to travel to DFW for a 4A district. They could say that would be a travel harship....and that it would be better for them to stay in 5A with Abilene HS, Permain, Odessa, and that district.
Outside of being in a travel issue or being in a multiple HS district..... schools can no longer request up.
